This work presents a new approach for performing a parametric study and examining nonlinear material behaviours of a coupled thermal-mechanical model of a Power Electronics Module (PEM) by integrating the Finite Element Method (ANSYS-FEM) with Parametric Model Order Reduction (pMOR). The considered coupling method solves the thermal and structural models concurrently compared to the widely practised sequential coupling method. Instead of constant parameter values, which are generally regarded for pMOR studies, the temperature-dependent material properties of the wire material have been parametrised in the work using the pMOR method. A generalised 2D model has been regarded here for thermal-mechanical analysis with the pMOR approach, parametrising temperature-dependent coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and Young’s modulus (E) of the wire material to explore their impact on wire bonds. The matrix interpolation method has been applied here for the pMOR study, and PRIMA, a Krylov subspace-based model order reduction (MOR) technique, has been exercised for local model order reductions. A new efficient process of matrix interpolation, based on the Lagrange interpolation technique, has been developed to implement matrix interpolation in the parametric reduced order model (pROM). The local reduced order models (ROMs) have a degree of freedom (DOF) of just 8, compared to the full-order models’ (FOMs) of 50,602. The pROM provides an excellent solution and reduces computational time by 84% for the presented case.

A damage mechanics-based numerical approach for the prediction of the damage evolution in wirebond structures of the power electronic module (PEM) is presented. A simplistic damage evolution model is developed in an in-house finite element code, with a demonstration focused on the analysis of the wirebond damage evolution by thermally induced stresses in PEM subjected to varying thermal loads. The novelty of the proposed methodology is the damage evolution realized at the level of each discretised mesh element of the finite element model of the PEM structure in the numerical approach and the associated impact of damage on the mechanical material properties of that element. A simplified PEM structure is utilised as a case study to demonstrate the proposed damage evolution modelling. The thermal load of each discretised element of the PEM structure was imported from an external thermal code. From the thermally induced stresses, plastic strain rates were approximated and then, using these metrics a damage evolution metric was derived. The damage distribution plot of the wirebond structure for the applied load in the case study indicates that maximum damage accumulation at the heel structure reaches 2.4% of the total damage after 3 seconds. By extrapolating the trendline of damage evolution in wirebond, the time of the structural failure was also predicted. The maximum von Mises stress was observed on the busbar which reaches 64 MPa. The extreme stresses found at the busbar are attributed to the high value of the coefficient of thermal expansion of the busbar material.

Lithium-ion batteries play a crucial role in present-day energy storage systems, necessitating the development of precise prediction models to improve their performance and ensure safety. The present study introduces a comprehensive methodology that encompasses the calibration, validation, and application of two separate Li-ion battery electrochemical models: the equivalent circuit model and the electrochemistry-based model. The calibration and validation of these models are based on experimental data conducted under various operating conditions, including charge/discharge rates, calendaring temperature, and Hybrid Pulse Power Characterization (HPPC) tests. After the successful validation process, these models are used to generate synthetic data tailored to real-world applications, particularly electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (eVTOL). The primary objective is to assess the precision of battery performance prediction, wherein the synthetic data is thoroughly compared with real experimental data. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in developing a model that reduces dependence on labor-intensive testing and associated equipment costs, reduces time for experimentation, and accelerates controller development for batteries. This work highlights the importance of precise predictive models in lithium-ion batteries, facilitating the effective investigation of practical applications and advancements in energy storage technology.

Compounds accumulated on the surface of plant tissues and structures like glandular trichomes and thin epicuticular layer are defined as exudate, external, superficial. They exhibited important protective activities - antifungal, antibacterial, insect antifeedant, larvicidal, antiplasmodial, and UV protective. The exudate obtained from Helichrysum arenarium flowers was evaluated for its inhibitory activity on germination and initial radicle elongation of Lolium perenne seeds. The experiment was done in vitro in Petri dishes. The exudate, in water–acetone mixture (99.5:0.5), was assayed at concentrations of 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 mg/mL. The chemical composition of the exudate was analyzed by GC/MS. Exudate solution with 5 mg/mL concentration was found to cause more than 90% of seed germination inhibition. At the same concentration, complete inhibition of root growth was observed. The main bioactive component of exudate was identified as flavonoid aglycone–naringenin. The inhibitory activity of H. arenarium on seed germination was investigated for the first time in the present study.

Quadruple-negative breast cancer (QNBC) presents with negative expression of estrogen, progesterone, and androgen receptors and of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2. This BC subtype has the worst prognosis. In QNBC, there is a greater paucity of prognostic biomarkers than in androgen receptors-positive triple negative BC (TNBC). Absent androgen receptor expression confers a more aggressive QNBC course and correlates with the expression of cancer stem cell phenotype, COX-2, and basal markers such as CK5 and nestin. Basal-like phenotype is significantly associated with adverse prognostic markers including high KI-67, COX-2 expression, and cancer stem cell phenotype. Engrailed-1 expression is associated with unfavorable overall survival in QNBC patients. Non-coding ribonucleic acids play a significant role in BC tumourigenesis by virtue of their oncogenic and tumour-suppressive properties. The identification of QNBC-specific circulating microribonucleic acids may improve tumour detection and prognosis. There is an obvious necessity to intensify the problem-oriented interdisciplinary research on the hot topic of prognostic biomarkers of QNBC.

Recently, breast cancer (BC) continuously ranks first in the incidence rate of malignant neoplasms in womenworldwide. Quadruple negative BC (QNBC) is a recently identified subtype of triple negative BC (TNBC) presenting with negative androgen receptor expression. QNBC characterization and treatment is fraught with many challenges.There is cumulative evidence suggestingthat QNBC ishighly proliferative and immunogenic, rendering it anideal candidate for cytotoxic chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Several chemotherapeutic agents such as imatinib, cabozantinib, dasatinib, lucitanib,sunitinib, docetaxel, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamidein QNBCpatients are highlighted. Some subtypes and related pathway proteins are preferentially expressed in QNBC and may act as effective therapeutic targets such as acyl-CoA synthetase4, S-phase kinase associated protein 2, immune checkpoint inhibitors, kinesin family member C1,and epidermal growth factor receptor. Several recent investigations comparing the therapeutic approach to QNBC and TNBC are briefly reviewed. Further more intensive and problem-oriented research in this topic of rising socio-medical importance is needed.

Treatment of implant related infections after surgicalor dentalproceduresare challengingcomplicationsandmay have devastating results for patients.The ability of microorganisms to adhere and form biofilm on implant surface is one of the main reasons for treatment failure in infections. When used in human body implants provide a suitable surfacefor cell attachment and bacterial colonization. One of the most common bacteriathat is isolated in hospital-acquired infections is Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant subtype. When a biofilm is formed, bacteria acquire an arsenal of properties that allow them to survive in an adverse environment, increasing their resistance to antimicrobial agents. Recently, as treatment modalities bioactive glass is used in the treatment of infections with multiresistant bacteria types. Its mechanism of action is to stimulate osteogenesis by releasing biologically active ions and at the same time it has antibacterial functionon a number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria due to increasementin osmotic pressure and environmental pH without affecting host tissues. These properties make bioactive glass extremelly suitablefor the treatment of infectionin boneswith destruction and bone loss. The aim of the present study is to review the outcomesreported in the literature on the antimicrobial effectiveness of bioactive glass S53P4 on Staphyloccocus aureus(MRSA).

Ongoing technological advances in photodetector material growth and processing, readout integrated circuits, and robust hybridization (packaging) methods for assembling high-resolution and small-pitch size pixel arrays are the main enabling factors for pushing the frontiers of high-performance Focal Plane Array (FPA) technologies for imaging systems. This paper details the development of analytical and numerical models and demonstrates their use to generate insights into the feasibility of two flip-chip assembly processes for packaging infrared (IR) detector chips. The modeling studies focus on the challenges of forming the indium interconnection arrays in the case of the FPA technologies using Group III-V compound semiconductor materials and ultra-fine pitch pixel array layouts. The accurate alignment of the IR detector chip onto the readout chip in the case of high-density pixel architectures is a critical requirement for the packaging process. To gain a better understanding of this requirement, which has a clear implication for the quality and subsequent reliability performance of the FPA, compression, and reflow bonding process models are developed using suitable modeling approaches and methods and then demonstrated for two distinctive focal plane array design configurations. The novelty of this work is in the developed modeling capabilities utilizing different computational methods, from large deformation and contact analysis finite element to energy-based and harmonic motion mechanics, to characterize and optimize the mechanical and dynamic non-linear behavior of the indium solder joints and their formation during FPA packaging. The feasibility of bonding techniques for different resolution FPAs and under flip-chip misalignment conditions is assessed. The modeling results pointed to a very strict, sub-micrometer flip-chip placement accuracy requirement for the assembly of FPAs with ultra-fine indium bump array resolution.

Background and Objectives: Trichomonas tenax is a protozoan which participates in the human oral microflora. It is considered as a potential paradontopathogen. This microorganism is also reported in the respiratory tract. We aimed to analyze the available literature about the prevalence of Trichomonas tenax in the population affected by periodontal disease. Materials and Methods: Searching the Scopus, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases with the keywords: “Trichomonas tenax” and “periodontal diseases” was able to identify several systematic reviews and original articles up until July 2023. All studies with patients suffering from periodontal disease, which mentioned the year of publication, the country, specified the detection methods, and included the total number of tested samples as well as the percentage of those infected with Trichomonas tenax were included. Irrelevant articles were excluded. Results: We found 137 studies, but only 64 studies about the distribution of Trichomonas tenax in patients with gum disease underwent qualitative analysis. The highest number of studies have been conducted in Iran, Poland and Iraq. Different methods have been used to detect the unicellular organism, each with a different specificity and sensitivity. Conclusions: Interest in Trichomonas tenax has grown considerably since 2000. Because of its association with periodontal disease, Trichomonas tenax’s role in the inflammatory process should not be overlooked.

Dysregulated cortical expression of the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) and deficits of its associated polysialic acid (polySia) have been found in Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. However, the functional role of polySia in cortical synaptic plasticity remains poorly understood. Here, we show that acute enzymatic removal of polySia in medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) slices leads to increased transmission mediated by the GluN1/GluN2B subtype of N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors (NMDARs), increased NMDAR-mediated extrasynaptic tonic currents, and impaired long-term potentiation (LTP). The latter could be fully rescued by pharmacological suppression of GluN1/GluN2B receptors, or by application of short soluble polySia fragments that inhibited opening of GluN1/GluN2B channels. These treatments and augmentation of synaptic NMDARs with the glycine transporter type 1 (GlyT1) inhibitor sarcosine also restored LTP in mice deficient in polysialyltransferase ST8SIA4. Furthermore, the impaired performance of polySia-deficient mice and two models of Alzheimer's disease in the mPFC-dependent cognitive tasks could be rescued by intranasal administration of polySia fragments. Our data demonstrate the essential role of polySia-NCAM in the balancing of signaling through synaptic/extrasynaptic NMDARs in mPFC and highlight the therapeutic potential of short polySia fragments to restrain GluN1/GluN2B-mediated signaling.

Glycyrrhiza glabra L. (Fabaceae), commonly known as licorice, is a perennial medicinal plant. Its healing properties are due mainly to the secondary metabolites glycyrrhizin and flavonoids accumulated in the roots of plants aged 3 years or more. Overexploitation of licorice populations in Bulgaria led to their rapid decrease. The species is protected by the national Biodiversity Act. The present study aimed at establishing of an ex situ collection of G. glabra using plant material originating from its Bulgarian populations in order to evaluate the main characteristics of the cultivated plants and their potential use as a source of plant material for the creation of a plantation. Plants were obtained from stolon cuttings of donor wild-growing plants from three Bulgarian populations and then cultivated for 3 years in the experimental field plot. Plants originating from all three populations produced glycyrrhizin and flavonoids in similar concentrations under the controlled conditions of the ex situ collection, despite the significant inter-population differences noted in situ. The soil type and supply of soil organic matter, total nitrogen and other nutrients turned out to be most important for the quality of plants in terms of both their growth and biosynthetic capacity. In addition, in vitro micropropagation has proven to be a suitable method for accelerating seedling production. These results would be of practical importance in establishing an agricultural plantation of G. glabra.

Propanol isomers, which are oxygen-rich fuels, possess superior octane ratings and energy density in comparison to methanol and ethanol. Recently, due to advancements in fermentation techniques, these propanol isomers have garnered increased interest as additives for engines. They are being explored to decrease emissions and reduce the usage of conventional fossil fuels. This study delves into this emerging field. One of the alternatives is the use of alcohol fuels in their pure state or as additives to traditional fuels. Alcohols, due to their higher volumetric energy density, are better fuels for spark ignition engines than hydrogen and biogas. Alcohol-blended fuels or alcohol fuels in their pure state may be used in gasoline engines to reduce exhaust emissions. The current research emphasizes the effect of isopropanol gasoline blends on the performance and emissions characteristics of a gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine. This investigation was conducted with different blends of isopropanol and gasoline (by volume: 10% isopropanol [IP10], 20% isopropanol [IP10], 30% isopropanol [IP30], 40% isopropanol [IP40], and 50% isopropanol [IP50]). The reviewed results showed that with increasing isopropanol in the fuel blends, engine brake power increased while BSFC decreased. In terms of emissions, with the increase in isopropanol in the fuel blends, CO and HC emissions decreased while CO2 and NOx emissions increased.

Goal-directed behaviors require the brain to integrate information across many task-related dimensions. Here, the authors use a virtual context discrimination paradigm in mice to demonstrate the capacity for neurons in the retrosplenial cortex to exhibit multidimensional encoding across learning.

Abstract To provide the most comprehensive picture of species phylogeny and phylogeography of European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), we analyzed mtDNA control region (610 bp) of 1469 samples of roe deer from Central and Eastern Europe and included into the analyses additional 1541 mtDNA sequences from GenBank from other regions of the continent. We detected two mtDNA lineages of the species: European and Siberian (an introgression of C. pygargus mtDNA into C. capreolus). The Siberian lineage was most frequent in the eastern part of the continent and declined toward Central Europe. The European lineage contained three clades (Central, Eastern, and Western) composed of several haplogroups, many of which were separated in space. The Western clade appeared to have a discontinuous range from Portugal to Russia. Most of the haplogroups in the Central and the Eastern clades were under expansion during the Weichselian glacial period before the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), while the expansion time of the Western clade overlapped with the Eemian interglacial. The high genetic diversity of extant roe deer is the result of their survival during the LGM probably in a large, contiguous range spanning from the Iberian Peninsula to the Caucasus Mts and in two northern refugia.

Golden jackal (Canis aureus) expansion in the last decades has triggered research interest in Europe. However, jackal phylogeny and taxonomy are still controversial. Morphometric studies in Europe found differences between Dalmatian and the other European jackals. Recent genetic studies revealed that African and Eurasian golden jackals are distinct species. Moreover, large Canis aureus lupaster may be a cryptic subspecies of the African golden jackal. Although genetic studies suggest changes in Canis aureus taxonomy, morphological and morphometric studies are still needed. The present study proposes the first comprehensive analysis on a wide scale of golden jackal skull morphometry. Extensive morphometric data of jackal skulls from Europe (including a very large Bulgarian sample), Asia Minor, and North Africa were analysed, by applying recently developed statistical tools, to address the following questions: (i) is there geographic variation in skull size and shape among populations from Europe, Anatolia and the Caucasus?, (ii) is the jackal population from the Dalmatian coast different?, and (iii) is there a clear distinction between the Eurasian golden jackal (Canis aureus) and the African wolf (Canis lupaster sensu lato), and among populations of African wolves as well? Principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis were applied on the standardized and log-transformed ratios of the original measurements to clearly separate specimens by shape and size. The results suggest that jackals from Europe, Anatolia and the Caucasus belong to one subspecies: Canis aureus moreotica (I. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1835), despite the differences in shape of Dalmatian specimens. The present study confirmed morphometrically that all jackals included so far in the taxon Canis aureus sensu lato may represent three taxa and supports the hypothesis that at least two different taxa (species?) of Canis occur in North Africa, indicating the need for further genetic, morphological, behavioural and ecological research to resolve the taxonomic uncertainty. The results are consistent with recent genetic and morphological studies and give further insights on golden jackal taxonomy. Understanding the species phylogeny and taxonomy is crucial for the conservation and management of the expanding golden jackal population in Europe.

The incidence of ovarian tumors during pregnancy is from 1: 300 to 1: 556 pregnant. Of all the ovarian tumors during pregnancy, malignant tumors have a frequency of: 1:15000 to 1: 32000. Case report: I. K. was admitted to Clinic of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the University Hospital Stara Zagora with a diagnosis of Graviditas m.l. IV. Kysta ovarii dextra. Ultrasound revealed a cyst on the right ovary with an oval shape, smooth inner and outer walls, filled with fluid measuring 111/94 mm. diagnosed as early as 8 weeks of gestation. At 14 gest.week. was hospitalized - right adnexectomy and wedge resection of the left ovary with histological result - serous tumor with low malignant potential. The second patient N.S. at the age of 25 was admitted with an admission diagnosis of Graviditas ml IV. Kysta ovarii sinistra. Ca 125 values at admission were 432 U / ml. Sonography revealed a single ultrasound homogeneous cyst of the left ovary with a diameter of 75/47 mm at 14 weeks of gestation. From histological examination of the tumor formation - left ovary with a serous tumor with a low degree of malignancy. The first patient underwent 3 cycles of chemotherapy at - 25, 28 and 31 gestational weeks. At 33 weeks, a spontaneous normal vaginal birth followed. In the second patient, a normal fetus was born after a cesarean section. The combination of ovarian cancer and existing pregnancy is a rarity that raises many questions in diagnostic and therapeutic terms. Finding the right solution is ambiguous due to the unclear impact of pregnancy on ovarian cancer and borderline variants of ovarian tumors.

Rear-edge populations of montane species are known to be vulnerable to environmental change, which could affect them by habitat reduction and isolation. Habitat requirements of two cold-adapted boreo-alpine owl species — Boreal Owl (Aegolius funereus) and Pygmy Owl (Glaucidium passerinum) — have been studied in refugial montane populations in the western Rhodopes, South Bulgaria. Data on owl presence and forest stand attributes recorded in situ have been used to identify significant predictors for owl occurrence. The results revealed Boreal Owl's preference for comparatively dense forests (high canopy closure values), big trees (diameter at breast height ≥50 ​cm) and large amount of fallen dead wood in penultimate stage of decay. For Pygmy Owl the only significant explanatory variable was the total amount of fallen dead wood. Results suggest preference of both owl species for forests with structural elements typical of old-growth forests (i.e., veteran trees, deadwood), the Pygmy Owl being less prone to inhabit managed forests. Being at the rear edge of their Palearctic breeding range in Europe both Boreal and Pygmy Owls are of high conservation value on the Balkan Peninsula. Hence, additional efforts are needed for their conservation in the light of climate change and resulting alteration of forest structural parameters. Current findings can be used for adjusting forest management practices in order to ensure both, sustainable profit from timber and continuous species survival.

Alkanna tinctoria (L.) Tausch Boraginaceae is a medicinal plant whose root is used for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. A. tinctoria roots have been subject to numerous studies. However, the aerial parts have been explored less. The objective of the present study was to compare the chemical profile of aerial parts and roots as well as the total alkannin content in roots of 11 populations of the species from different floristic regions of Bulgaria. Methanolic extracts from 22 samples were analyzed by GC/MS. Phenolic, fatty, and organic acids, sterols, polyols, fatty alcohols, and sugars were identified. Ononitol (4-O-methyl-myo-inositol) was found as the main compound in the aerial parts. The total alkannin content in the roots was evaluated by the spectrophotometric method and compared with that of the commercial product. Populations with high alkannin content and rich in other bioactive compounds were identified. A relatively low genetic diversity in the studied populations was observed. The present study is the first comprehensive study on metabolite profiles and genetic diversity of the Bulgarian populations of A. tinctoria. The occurrence of ononitol in the aerial parts of the species is reported for the first time, as well as the phenolic acid profiles of the species in both aerial parts and roots. The results showed that aerial parts of the plant are also promising for use as a source of valuable biologically active substances.

The Balkan Vegetation Database (BVD; GIVD ID: EU-00-019) is a regional database, which was established in 2014. It comprises phytosociological relevés covering various vegetation types from nine countries of the Balkan Peninsula (Albania – 153 relevés, Bosnia and Herzegovina – 1715, Bulgaria – 12,282, Greece – 465, Croatia – 69, Kosovo – 493, Montenegro – 440, North Macedonia – 13 and Serbia – 2677). Currently, it contains 18,306 relevés (compared to 9.580 in 2016), and most of them (82.8%) are geo-referenced. The database includes both digitized relevés from the literature (65.6%) and unpublished data (34.5%). Plot size is available for 84.7% of all relevés. During the last four years some “header data information” was improved e.g. elevation (now available for 83.4% of all relevés), aspect (67.7%), slope (66%), total cover of vegetation (54.3%), cover of tree, shrub, herb, bryophyte and lichen layers (27.1%, 20.1%, 40.2%, 11.5% and 2.1%), respectively. Data access is either semi-restricted (65.6%) or restricted (34.4%). Most relevés (84.6%) are classified to syntaxa of different levels. The database has been used for numerous studies with various objectives from floristic, vegetation and habitat-related topics, to macroecological studies at the local, regional, national, continental and global levels. During the last four years, BVD data were requested from 111 different projects via the EVA and sPlot databases.

In electronics manufacturing, the necessary quality of electronic components and parts is ensured through qualification testing using standards and user requirements. The challenge is that product qualification testing is time-consuming and comes at a substantial cost. The work contributes to develop a novel prognostics framework for predicting qualification test outcomes of electronic components enabling the reduction of qualification test time and cost. The research focuses on the development of a new, prognostics-based approach to qualification of electronics parts that can enable “smart testing” using data-driven modelling techniques in order to ensure product robustness and reliability in operation. This work is both novel and original because at present such approach to qualification testing and the associated capability for test time reduction (respectively cost reduction) it offers are non-existent in the electronics industry. An effective way of using three different methods for development of prognostics models are identified and applied. Predictive models are constructed from historical qualification test data in the form of electrical parameter measurements using Machine Learning (ML) techniques. ML models can be imbedded within the sequential electrical tests qualification procedure and enable the forecasting of the pass/fail qualification outcome using only partial information from already completed electrical tests. Data-driven prognostics models are developed using the following machine learning techniques: (1) Support Vector Machine (SVM), (2) Neural Network (NN) and (3) K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN). The results show that with just over half of the individual tests completed, the models are capable of forecasting the final qualification outcome, pass or fail, with accuracy as high as 92.5%. The predictive power and overall performance of the researched models in predicting qualification test binary outcomes with varying ratios of Pass and Fail data in the processed datasets are analysed.

Microglia continuously monitor synapses, but active synaptic remodeling by microglia in mature healthy brains is rarely directly observed. We performed targeted photoablation of single synapses in mature transgenic mice expressing fluorescent labels in neurons and microglia. The photodamage focally increased the duration of microglia-neuron contacts, and dramatically exacerbated both the turnover of dendritic spines and presynaptic boutons as well as the generation of new filopodia originating from spine heads or boutons. The results of microglia depletion confirmed that elevated spine turnover and the generation of presynaptic filopodia are microglia-dependent processes.

The profiles of methanol extractable and methanol insoluble bound phenolic acids of two species: Verbascum anisophyllum Murb (Balkan endemic) and Verbascum davidoffii Murb. (Bulgarian endemic) were determined. Free radical scavenging activity and total phenolic content of studied extracts and fractions were evaluated by DPPH antioxidant method and Folin–Ciocalteu reagent, respectively. Phenolic acid profiles were analyzed by GC/MS. Sixteen phenolic acids and their derivatives were detected. Ferulic acid was the major individual phenolic acid presented in all extracts and fractions. Hydroxycinnamic, vanillic and p-hydroxybenzoic acids were also abundant in the studied phenolic acid profiles. The presence of gentisic, syringic, isoferulic, dihydroferulic, eudesmic, 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzoic acids were reported for the first time to Verbascum species. The greatest variety of phenolic acids was found in the fractions containing methanol insoluble bound hydrolysable phenolic acids. The highest free radical scavenging activity and total phenolic content were established for methanol extractable alkaline hydrolysable fractions. Phenolic acid profiles and free radical scavenging activity of both species were similar although V. davidoffii contained few more components. The present study is the first report on the phenolic acid profiles and free radical scavenging activity of V. anisophyllum and V. davidoffii as well as the first detailed study of the phenolic acid profiles of the Verbacum species.

Top predators can reduce local mesopredator abundance either through direct predation or behavioural changes. Here, Newsome and colleagues demonstrate at a landscape scale across three continents that mesopredator populations are suppressed at the core, but less so on the periphery, of top predators’ ranges.

Two-photon imaging of fluorescently labeled microglia in vivo provides a direct approach to measure motility of microglial processes as a readout of microglial function that is crucial in the context of neurodegenerative diseases, as well as to understand the neuroinflammatory response to implanted substrates and brain-computer interfaces. In this longitudinal study, we quantified surveilling and photodamage-directed microglial processes motility in both acute and chronic cranial window preparations and compared the motility under isoflurane and ketamine anesthesia to an awake condition in the same animal. The isoflurane anesthesia increased the length of surveilling microglial processes in both acute and chronic preparations, while ketamine increased the number of microglial branches in acute preparation only. In chronic (but not acute) preparation, the extension of microglial processes toward the laser-ablated microglial cell was faster under isoflurane (but not ketamine) anesthesia than in awake mice, indicating distinct effects of anesthetics and of preparation type. These data reveal potentiating effects of isoflurane on microglial response to damage, and provide a framework for comparison and optimal selection of experimental conditions for quantitative analysis of microglial function using two-photon microscopy in vivo.

Prognostics is seen as a key component of health usage monitoring systems, where prognostics algorithms can both detect anomalies in the behavior/performance of a micro-device/system, and predict its remaining useful life when subjected to monitored operational and environmental conditions. Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are optoelectronic micro-devices that are now replacing traditional incandescent and fluorescent lighting, as they have many advantages including higher reliability, greater energy efficiency, long life time and faster switching speed. For some LED applications there is a requirement to monitor the health of LED lighting systems and predict when failure is likely to occur. This is very important in the case of safety critical and emergency applications. This paper provides both experimental and theoretical results that demonstrate the use of prognostics and health monitoring techniques for high power LEDs subjected to harsh operating conditions.

The principle of extremum seeking control has been applied on a cascade of two anaerobic bioreactors using the dilution rate as control action and the biogas flow rates as measured outputs to be maximized. In all cases maximum biogas flow rate with sensible decrease of the general output depollution parameter (compared to the case of one single bioreactor) has been obtained, starting from different initial conditions. With the same algorithm, good performances have been obtained in the presence of variations of the inlet organics. Its implication for biotechnology may result in substantial economic benefits.

A review of the problems in modeling, optimization and control of biotechnological processes and systems is given in this paper. An analysis of existing and some new practical optimization methods for searching global optimum based on various advanced strategies - heuristic, stochastic, genetic and combined are presented in the paper. Methods based on the sensitivity theory, stochastic and mix strategies for optimization with partial knowledge about kinetic, technical and economic parameters in optimization problems are discussed. Several approaches for the multi-criteria optimization tasks are analyzed. The problems concerning optimal controls of biotechnological systems are also discussed.

Prognostics and health management (PHM) has become an important component of many engineering systems and products, where algorithms are used to detect anomalies, diagnose faults and predict remaining useful lifetime (RUL). PHM can provide many advantages to users and maintainers. Although primary goals are to ensure the safety, provide state of the health and estimate RUL of the components and systems, there are also financial benefits such as operational and maintenance cost reductions and extended lifetime. This study aims at reviewing the current status of algorithms and methods used to underpin different existing PHM approaches. The focus is on providing a structured and comprehensive classification of the existing state-of-the-art PHM approaches, data-driven approaches and algorithms.
