Abstract: The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. 2. Evidence of a sub-solar star in a microlensing event toward the LMC

Abstract: Gravitational microlensing is known to be an impressive tool for searching dark, small, and compact objects that are missed by the usual astronomical observations. In this paper, by analysing multiple images acquired by DECam, we present the detection and a complete description of the microlensing event LMC J05074558-65574990 which is most likely due to a sub-solar object with mass $(0.16\pm0.10) $M$_\odot$, hence in the mass range between a massive brown dwarf and a red dwarf, whose distance is estimated to be $7.8^{+4.1}_{-3.4}\times10^2$ pc thanks to the Gaia observation of the source, leading us to consider this lens as one the closest ever detected., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: The Dark Energy Camera (DECam) is a sensitive, wide field instrument mounted at the prime focus of the 4 m V. Blanco Telescope in Chile. Beside its main objectives, i.e. understanding the growth and evolution of structures in the Universe, the camera offers the opportunity to observe a 3 deg2 field of view in one single pointing and, with an adequate cadence, to identify the variable sources contained. In this paper, we present the result of a DECam observational campaign toward the LMC and give a catalogue of the observed variable sources. We considered all the available DECam observations of the LMC, acquired during 32 nights over a period of two years (from February 2018 to January 2020), and set up a specific pipeline for detecting and characterizing variable sources in the observed fields. Here, we report on the first 15 deg2 in and around the LMC as observed by DECam, testing the capabilities of our pipeline. Since many of the observed fields cover a rather crowded region of the sky, we adopted the ISIS subtraction package which, even in these conditions, can detect variables at a very low signal to noise ratio. All the potentially identified variable sources were then analyzed and each light curve tested for periodicity by using the Lomb-Scargle and Schwarzenberg-Czerny algorithms. Furthermore, we classified the identified sources by using the UPSILoN neural network. This analysis allowed us to find 70 981 variable stars, 1266 of which were previously unknown. We estimated the period of the variables and compared it with the available values in the catalogues. It is necessary to develop biomarkers for cognitive decline in PD for earlier detection and prediction of disease progression.MethodsWe reviewed literature which used artificial intelligence-based techniques, which can be more sensitive than other analyses, to determine potential biomarkers for cognitive impairment in PD.ResultsWe found that combining biomarker types, including those from neuroimaging and biofluids, resulted in higher accuracy. Focused analysis on each biomarker type revealed that using structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) resulted in accuracy and area under the curve (AUC) values above 80%/0.80, and that beta-amyloid-42 and tau were able to classify PD subjects by cognitive function with accuracy and AUC values above 90%/0.90.DiscussionWe can conclude that applying both blood-based and imaging-based biomarkers may improve diagnostic accuracy and prediction of cognitive impairment in PD.

Abstract: Cutting across the boundaries of media, literature, visual arts, and cultural studies, this study examines the resurgence of cultural entrepreneurship in post-Mao China, focusing on how the new media have contributed to the rise of women cultural entrepreneurs as a new social phenomenon. It investigates the rise of China's women “cultural entrepreneurs” and their roles as tastemakers and cultural trendsetters, using three case studies from China's creative industries: author Anni Baobei, artist Cao Fei, and actress Xu Jinglei. The Chinese women cultural entrepreneurs are examined against the backdrop of the Reform-era history and growing importance of China's creative industries. Analysis explores how these entrepreneurs use the new media for content dissemination while spinning transmedia narratives about themselves. By examining female self-fashioning and the creation of the cultural entrepreneur as a new type of celebrity in China, the article aims to shed new light on the cultural and social negotiations in China's mediasphere.

Abstract: The evolution of parallel I/O library as well as new concepts such as 'in transit' and 'in situ' visualization and analysis have been identified as key technologies to circumvent I/O bottleneck in pre-exascale applications. Nevertheless, data structure and data format can also be improved for both reducing I/O volume and improving data interoperability between data producer and data consumer. In this paper, we propose a very lightweight and purpose-specific post-processing data model for AMR meshes, called lightAMR. Based on this data model, we introduce a tree pruning algorithm that removes data redundancy from a fully threaded AMR octree. In addition, we present two lossless compression algorithms, one for the AMR grid structure description and one for AMR double/single precision physical quantity scalar fields. Then we present performance benchmarks on RAMSES simulation datasets of this new lightAMR data model and the pruning and compression algorithms. We show that our pruning algorithm can reduce the total number of cells from RAMSES AMR datasets by 10-40% without loss of information. Finally, we show that the RAMSES AMR grid structure can be compacted by ~ 3 orders of magnitude and the float scalar fields can be compressed by a factor ~ 1.2 for double precision and ~ 1.3 - 1.5 in single precision with a compression speed of ~ 1 GB/s., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Journal of Computational Physics

Abstract: Abstract Clinical, cognitive, and atrophy characteristics depending on sex have been previously reported in Parkinson’s disease (PD). However, though sex differences in cortical gray matter measures in early drug naïve patients have been described, little is known about differences in cortical thickness (CTh) as the disease advances. Our multi-site sample comprised 211 non-demented PD patients (64.45% males; mean age 65.58 ± 8.44 years old; mean disease duration 6.42 ± 5.11 years) and 86 healthy controls (50% males; mean age 65.49 ± 9.33 years old) with available T1-weighted 3 T MRI data from four international research centers. Sex differences in regional mean CTh estimations were analyzed using generalized linear models. The relation of CTh in regions showing sex differences with age, disease duration, and age of onset was examined through multiple linear regression. PD males showed thinner cortex than PD females in six frontal (bilateral caudal middle frontal, bilateral superior frontal, left precentral and right pars orbitalis), three parietal (bilateral inferior parietal and left supramarginal), and one limbic region (right posterior cingulate). In PD males, lower CTh values in nine out of ten regions were associated with longer disease duration and older age, whereas in PD females, lower CTh was associated with older age but with longer disease duration only in one region. Overall, male patients show a more widespread pattern of reduced CTh compared with female patients. Disease duration seems more relevant to explain reduced CTh in male patients, suggesting worse prognostic over time. Further studies should explore sex-specific cortical atrophy trajectories using large longitudinal multi-site data.

Abstract: Euclid will be the first space mission to survey most of the extragalactic sky in the 0.95-2.02 $\mu$m range, to a 5$\sigma$ point-source median depth of 24.4 AB mag. This unique photometric data set will find wide use beyond Euclid's core science. In this paper, we present accurate computations of the Euclid Y_E, J_E and H_E passbands used by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP), and the associated photometric system. We pay particular attention to passband variations in the field of view, accounting among others for spatially variable filter transmission, and variations of the angle of incidence on the filter substrate using optical ray tracing. The response curves' cut-on and cut-off wavelengths - and their variation in the field of view - are determined with 0.8 nm accuracy, essential for the photometric redshift accuracy required by Euclid. After computing the photometric zeropoints in the AB mag system, we present linear transformations from and to common ground-based near-infrared photometric systems, for normal stars, red and brown dwarfs, and galaxies separately. A Python tool to compute accurate magnitudes for arbitrary passbands and spectral energy distributions is provided. We discuss various factors from space weathering to material outgassing that may slowly alter Euclid's spectral response. At the absolute flux scale, the Euclid in-flight calibration program connects the NISP photometric system to Hubble Space Telescope spectrophotometric white dwarf standards; at the relative flux scale, the chromatic evolution of the response is tracked at the milli-mag level. Abstract: Intermediate Mass Black Holes (IMBHs) are a class of black holes with masses in the range $10^2 \div 10^5$ $M_\odot$, which can not directly derive from stellar evolution. Looking for these objects and estimating their abundance is important not only for a deeper understanding of their origin but also for unveiling the nature and distribution of the dark matter in the galactic halo. Since February 2018 to January 2020, the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud have been intensively monitored by the DECAM instrument, installed on the 4m V. Blanco Telescope (CTIO, Chile) with the main objective to discover microlensing events possibly due to IMBHs. Here we outline the developed data analysis pipeline. We have tested it versus known variable sources finding many not previously known variables objects. A few sources show a light curve similar to that expected for a microlensing event, but further analysis is required to confirm the microlensing nature of these events. Abstract: We present the $360^\circ$ catalogue of physical properties of Hi-GAL compact sources, detected between 70 and 500 $\mu$m. This release not only completes the analogous catalogue previously produced by the Hi-GAL collaboration for $-71^\circ \lesssim \ell \lesssim 67^\circ$, but also meaningfully improves it thanks to a new set of heliocentric distances, 120808 in total. About a third of the 150223 entries are located in the newly added portion of the Galactic plane. A first classification based on detection at 70 $\mu$m as a signature of ongoing star-forming activity distinguishes between protostellar sources (23~per cent of the total) and starless sources, with the latter further classified as gravitationally bound (pre-stellar) or unbound. The integral of the spectral energy distribution, including ancillary photometry from $\lambda=21$ to 1100 $\mu$m, gives the source luminosity and other bolometric quantities, while a modified black body fitted to data for $\lambda \geq 160\, \mu$m yields mass and temperature. All tabulated clump properties are then derived using photometry and heliocentric distance, where possible. Statistics of these quantities are discussed with respect to both source Galactic location and evolutionary stage. No strong differences in the distributions of evolutionary indicators are found between the inner and outer Galaxy. However, masses and densities in the inner Galaxy are on average significantly larger, resulting in a higher number of clumps that are candidates to host massive star formation. 23. VZ Sex: X-ray confirmation of its intermediate polar nature

Abstract: Intermediate polars are members of the cataclysmic variable binary stars. They are characterized by a moderately magnetized white dwarf accreting matter from a cool main-sequence companion star. In many cases, this accretion gives rise to a detectable $X$-ray emission. VZ Sex is an interesting $X$-ray source whose nature needs a robust confirmation. Here, we used archive $XMM$-Newton observation to assign the source to the intermediate polar class. We applied the Lomb-Scargle periodogram method to detect any relevant periodic feature in the $0.1$--$10$ keV light curve and performed a spectral fitting of the $X$-ray spectrum in order to get information on the on-going accretion mechanism. By inspecting the periodogram, we detected a clear periodic feature at $\simeq 20.3$ minutes that we interpret as the spin period of the white dwarf. We additionally found the typical side bands expected as the consequence of the beat between the spin and the orbital period of $\simeq 3.581$ hours. The source is characterized by a unabsorbed flux of $\simeq 2.98\times 10^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ corresponding to an intrinsic luminosity {of $\simeq 7 \times 10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$ } {for a distance of $\simeq 433$ pc}. The existence of such features allow us to classify VZ Sex as a clear member of the intermediate polar class. Furthermore, with the estimated WD spin, the ratio $P_{spin}/P_{orb}$ is $\simeq 0.09$, i.e. consistent with that expected for a typical IP system above the period gap. 24. HP Cet and Swift J0820.6-2805: two candidate intermediate polars observed by XMM-Newton

Abstract: We report on the XMM-Newton observation of HP Cet and Swift J0820.6-2805, two X-ray photon sources that are candidates to be members of the intermediate polar class of cataclysmic variables. If the historical optical light curve of HP Cet shows a periodic feature at $\simeq 96$ minutes, a clear identification of such a signature in the high energy band (apart for a variability on a time scale of $\simeq 8$ minutes as detected by the ROSAT satellite) is lacking. By using XMM-Newton archive data, we clearly identify a feature (at $\simeq 88$ minutes) which is marginally consistent with one of the binary system orbital periods reported in the literature. We also found a signature of a periodic features on the time scale of $\simeq 5.6$ minutes. In the case of Swift J0820.6-2805, the intermediate polar nature was previously unclear and the orbital and the white dwarf spin periods were unknown. Here, the 0.3-10 keV data undoubtedly reveal an orbital period and a white dwarf spin of $\simeq 87.5$ minutes and $\simeq 27.9$ minutes, respectively. The spectral analysis showed that both HP Cet and Swift J0820.6-280 are members of the under-luminous IP subclass since their luminosity in the $0.3-10$ keV band is estimated to be $\simeq 5\times 10^{30}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and $\simeq 3.8\times 10^{29}$ erg s$^{-1}$, respectively., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS, main journal, 2020. 9 Pages. 9 Figures

Abstract: It has been clearly identified that I/O is one of the bottleneck to extend application for the exascale era. New concepts such as 'in transit' and 'in situ' visualization and analysis have been identified as key technologies to circumvent this particular issue. A new parallel I/O and data management library called Hercule, developed at CEA-DAM, has been integrated to Ramses, an AMR simulation code for self-gravitating fluids. Splitting the original Ramses output format in Hercule database formats dedicated to either checkpoints/restarts (HProt format) or post-processing (HDep format) not only improved I/O performance and scalability of the Ramses code but also introduced much more flexibility in the simulation outputs to help astrophysicists prepare their DMP (Data Management Plan). Furthermore, the very lightweight and purpose-specific post-processing format (HDep) will significantly improve the overall performance of analysis and visualization tools such as PyMSES 5. 27. Do subsequent outbursts of the same EXor source present similar features?

Abstract: V1118 Ori is a classical EXor source whose light curve has been monitored over the past thirty years (although not continuously). It underwent a powerful outburst in 2005, followed by ten years of quiescence and a less intense outburst in 2015. In 2019, a new intense brightness increase was observed ($\Delta g$ $\sim$ 3 mag). This new accretion episode offers the opportunity to compare the photometric and spectroscopic properties of different outbursts of the same source. This allows one to highlight differences and similarities among different events by removing any possible bias related to the intrinsic properties of the star-disk system. We discovered the 2019 V1118 Ori outburst by examining the $g$-band light curve acquired by the Zwicky Transient Facility and followed the decreasing phase with the Rapid Eye Mount telescope in the $griz$ bands. Two near-infrared spectra were also acquired at different brightness stages with the Large Binocular Telescope. The last event shows the following characteristics: 1) amplitude similar than in 2015 and lower than in 2005; 2) duration less than one year as in previous events; 3) rise (decline) speed of 0.018 (0.031) mag/day, which is different from previous cases; 4) a gradual blueing of the [$g-r$] color is observed over time, while the [$r-i$] color remains roughly unchanged; 5) with few exceptions, the near-infrared lines (mainly HI recombination) are the same observed in 2015; 6) the mass accretion rate peaks at Macc $\sim$ 10$^{-7}$ Msun/yr, and decreases in about a month down to a few 10$^{-8}$ Msun/yr. Abstract: Increasing awareness of the problems caused by synthetic agrochemicals, such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, makes it crucial to discover substitute approaches that can guarantee competitive plant production and protect the environment while maintaining the natural balance in agroecosystems. One of the leading alternatives is utilizing rhizobacterial strains named plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). The utilization of PGPR-based biofertilizers for advancement in the sustainability of farming productions has received considerable critical attention all over the world because of their contribution to not only improving plant growth but also inducing biotic and abiotic stress tolerance. This review updates the aforementioned eco-friendly strategy in sustainable agroecosystems and provides new insights into the phytostimulation and bioprotection ability of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), an emerging taxon of PGPR. In this regard, the ability of LAB to synthesize metabolites, including organic acids, phenolic acids and their flavonoid derivatives, phytohormones, and antimicrobial substrates, is presented. The use of LAB provides a bridge between PGPR and environmentally friendly crop productivity, which can lead to sustainable production systems by reducing the use of agrochemicals, improving soil quality, and minimizing environmental pollution. All the beneficial aspects of LAB need to be addressed by future research to plan systematic methodologies for their use and/or to combine the use of PGPR along with other organic or inorganic inputs in sustainable production systems.

Abstract: Introduction: Despite the progress made in the study of Facioscapulohumeral Dystrophy (FSHD), the wide heterogeneity of disease complicates its diagnosis and the genotype-phenotype correlation among patients and within families. In this context, the present work employed Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) to investigate known and unknown genetic contributors that may be involved in FSHD and may represent potential disease modifiers, even in presence of a D4Z4 Reduced Allele (DRA).Methods: A cohort of 126 patients with clinical signs of FSHD were included in the study, which were characterized by D4Z4 sizing, methylation analysis and WES. Specific protocols were employed for D4Z4 sizing and methylation analysis, whereas the Illumina® Next-Seq 550 system was utilized for WES. The study included both patients with a DRA compatible with FSHD diagnosis and patients with longer D4Z4 alleles. In case of patients harboring relevant variants from WES, the molecular analysis was extended to the family members.Results: The WES data analysis highlighted 20 relevant variants, among which 14 were located in known genetic modifiers (SMCHD1, DNMT3B and LRIF1) and 6 in candidate genes (CTCF, DNMT1, DNMT3A, EZH2 and SUV39H1). Most of them were found together with a permissive short (4–7 RU) or borderline/long DRA (8–20 RU), supporting the possibility that different genes can contribute to disease heterogeneity in presence of a FSHD permissive background. The segregation and methylation analysis among family members, together with clinical findings, provided a more comprehensive picture of patients.Discussion: Our results support FSHD pathomechanism being complex with a multigenic contribution by several known (SMCHD1, DNMT3B, LRIF1) and possibly other candidate genes (CTCF, DNMT1, DNMT3A, EZH2, SUV39H1) to disease penetrance and expressivity. Our results further emphasize the importance of extending the analysis of molecular findings within the proband’s family, with the purpose of providing a broader framework for understanding single cases and allowing finer genotype-phenotype correlations in FSHD-affected families.

Abstract: Context The Vela Molecular Ridge is one of the nearest (700 pc) giant molecular cloud (GMC) complexes hosting intermediate-mass (up to early B, late O stars) star formation, and is located in the outer Galaxy, inside the Galactic plane. Vela C is one of the GMCs making up the Vela Molecular Ridge, and exhibits both sub-regions of robust and sub-regions of more quiescent star formation activity, with both low- and intermediate(high)-mass star formation in progress. Aims We aim to study the individual and global properties of dense dust cores in Vela C, and aim to search for spatial variations in these properties which could be related to different environmental properties and/or evolutionary stages in the various sub-regions of Vela C. Methods We mapped the submillimetre (345 GHz) emission from vela C with LABOCA (beam size 19.2", spatial resolution ~0.07 pc at 700 pc) at the APEX telescope. We used the clump-finding algorithm CuTEx to identify the compact submillimetre sources. We also used SIMBA (250 GHz) observations, and Herschel and WISE ancillary data. The association with WISE red sources allowed the protostellar and starless cores to be separated, whereas the Herschel dataset allowed the dust temperature to be derived for a fraction of cores. The protostellar and starless core mass functions (CMFs) were constructed following two different approaches, achieving a mass completeness limit of 3.7 Msun. Results We retrieved 549 submillimetre cores, 316 of which are starless and mostly gravitationally bound (therefore prestellar in nature). Both the protostellar and the starless CMFs are consistent with the shape of a Salpeter initial mass function in the high-mass part of the distribution. Abstract: Cutting across the boundaries of media, literature, visual arts, and cultural studies, this study examines the resurgence of cultural entrepreneurship in post-Mao China, focusing on how the new media have contributed to the rise of women cultural entrepreneurs as a new social phenomenon. It investigates the rise of China's women “cultural entrepreneurs” and their roles as tastemakers and cultural trendsetters, using three case studies from China's creative industries: author Anni Baobei, artist Cao Fei, and actress Xu Jinglei. The Chinese women cultural entrepreneurs are examined against the backdrop of the Reform-era history and growing importance of China's creative industries. Analysis explores how these entrepreneurs use the new media for content dissemination while spinning transmedia narratives about themselves. By examining female self-fashioning and the creation of the cultural entrepreneur as a new type of celebrity in China, the article aims to shed new light on the cultural and social negotiations in China's mediasphere.

38. Beta amyloid deposition and cognitive decline in Parkinson’s disease: a study of the PPMI cohort

Abstract: Abstract The accumulation of beta amyloid in the brain has a complex and poorly understood impact on the progression of Parkinson’s disease pathology and much controversy remains regarding its role, specifically in cognitive decline symptoms. Some studies have found increased beta amyloid burden is associated with worsening cognitive impairment in Parkinson’s disease, especially in cases where dementia occurs, while other studies failed to replicate this finding. To better understand this relationship, we examined a cohort of 25 idiopathic Parkinson’s disease patients and 30 healthy controls from the Parkinson’s Progression Marker Initiative database. These participants underwent [18F]Florbetaben positron emission tomography scans to quantify beta amyloid deposition in 20 cortical regions. We then analyzed this beta amyloid data alongside the longitudinal Montreal Cognitive Assessment scores across 3 years to see how participant’s baseline beta amyloid levels affected their cognitive scores prospectively. The first analysis we performed with these data was a hierarchical cluster analysis to help identify brain regions that shared similarity. We found that beta amyloid clusters differently in Parkinson’s disease patients compared to healthy controls. In the Parkinson’s disease group, increased beta amyloid burden in cluster 2 was associated with worse cognitive ability, compared to deposition in clusters 1 or 3. We also performed a stepwise linear regression where we found an adjusted R2 of 0.495 (49.5%) in a model explaining the Parkinson’s disease group’s Montreal Cognitive Assessment score 1-year post-scan, encompassing the left gyrus rectus, the left anterior cingulate cortex, and the right parietal cortex. Taken together, these results suggest regional beta amyloid deposition alone has a moderate effect on predicting future cognitive decline in Parkinson’s disease patients. The patchwork effect of beta amyloid deposition on cognitive ability may be part of what separates cognitive impairment from cognitive sparing in Parkinson’s disease. Thus, we suggest it would be more useful to measure beta amyloid burden in specific brain regions rather than using a whole-brain global beta amyloid composite score and use this information as a tool for determining which Parkinson’s disease patients are most at risk for future cognitive decline.

Abstract: Harbors are hubs of human activity and are subject to the continuous discharge and release of industrial, agricultural, and municipal waste and contaminants. Benthic organisms are largely known to reflect environmental conditions they live in. Despite meio- and macrofauna interacting within the benthic system, they are ecologically distinct components of the benthos and as such may not necessarily respond to environmental conditions and/or disturbances in the same way. However, in a few field studies the spatial patterns of meio- and macrofauna have been simultaneously compared. In the present study, we assess the response and patterns in the abundance, diversity, and distribution of the two benthic size classes to the different environmental conditions they live in (i.e., sediment concentrations of selected trace metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs); organic matter contents and grain size) characterizing the Ancona Harbor (Adriatic Sea). Meio- and macrofauna provided partially similar types of information depending on the indices used (univariate measures or community structure/species composition) and the different ‘response-to-stress’. The community structure (i.e., taxa composition) of both benthic size components clearly showed differences among sampling stations located from inside to outside the harbor, reflecting the marked environmental heterogeneity and disturbance typically characterizing these systems. Notwithstanding, the univariate measures (i.e., meio- and macrofauna total abundance, diversity indices and equitability) didn’t show similar spatial patterns. Meiofauna were likely to be more sensitive to the effects of environmental features and contaminants than macrofauna. Overall, trace metals and PAHs affected the community composition of the two benthic components, but only the meiofauna abundance and diversity were related to the environmental variables considered (i.e., quantity and quality of organic matter). Our results pinpoint the importance of studying both meio- and macrofauna communities, which could provide greater insight into the processes affecting the investigated area and reveal different aspects of the benthic ecosystems in response to harbor conditions.

Abstract: The multifractal geometry remains an under-exploited approach to describe and quantify the large-scale structure of interstellar clouds. In this paper, the typical tools of multifractal analysis are applied to Herschel far-infrared (70-500 $\mu$m) dust continuum maps, which represent an ideal case of study. This dust component is a relatively optically thin tracer at these wavelengths and the size in pixel of the maps is well suitable for this statistical analysis. We investigate the so-called multifractal spectrum and generalised fractal dimension of six Hi-GAL regions in the third Galactic quadrant. We measure systematic variations of the spectrum at increasing wavelength, which generally correspond to an increasing complexity of the image, and we observe peculiar behaviours of the investigated fields, strictly related to the presence of high-emission regions, which in turn are connected to star formation activity. The same analysis is applied to synthetic column density maps, generated from numerical turbulent molecular cloud models and from fractal Brownian motion (fBm), allowing for the confrontation of the observations with models with well controlled physical parameters. This comparison shows that, in terms of multifractal descriptors of the structure, fBm images exhibit a very different, quite unrealistic behaviour when compared with Hi-GAL observations, whereas the numerical simulations appear in some cases (depending on the specific model) more similar to the observations. Finally, the link between mono-fractal parameters (commonly found in the literature) and multifractal indicators is investigated: the former appear to be only partially connected with the latter, with the multifractal analysis offering a more extended and complete characterization of the cloud structure., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

Abstract: With the Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) of the Pierre Auger Observatory, we have observed the radio emission from 561 extensive air showers with zenith angles between 60$^\circ$ and 84$^\circ$. In contrast to air showers with more vertical incidence, these inclined air showers illuminate large ground areas of several km$^2$ with radio signals detectable in the 30 to 80\,MHz band. A comparison of the measured radio-signal amplitudes with Monte Carlo simulations of a subset of 50 events for which we reconstruct the energy using the Auger surface detector shows agreement within the uncertainties of the current analysis. As expected for forward-beamed radio emission undergoing no significant absorption or scattering in the atmosphere, the area illuminated by radio signals grows with the zenith angle of the air shower. Inclined air showers with EeV energies are thus measurable with sparse radio-antenna arrays with grid sizes of a km or more. This is particularly attractive as radio detection provides direct access to the energy in the electromagnetic cascade of an air shower, which in case of inclined air showers is not accessible by arrays of particle detectors on the ground., Comment: Published version, 14 pages, 12 figures

Abstract: The transient event labeled as TCP J05074264+2447555 recently discovered towards the Taurus region was quickly recognized to be an ongoing microlensing event on a source located at distance of only $700-800$ pc from Earth. Here, we show that observations with high sampling rate close to the time of maximum magnification revealed features that imply the presence of a binary lens system with very low mass ratio components. We present a complete description of the binary lens system which hosts an Earth-like planet with most likely mass of $9.2\pm 6.6$ M$_{\oplus}$. Furthermore, the source estimated location and detailed Monte Carlo simulations allowed us to classify the event as due to the closest lens system, being at a distance of $\simeq 380$ pc and mass $\simeq 0.25$ M$_{\odot}$., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS, 2018. 6 Pages, 5 Figures. Abstract: A new analysis of the dataset from the Pierre Auger Observatory provides evidence for anisotropy in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays on an intermediate angular scale, which is indicative of excess arrivals from strong, nearby sources. The data consist of 5514 events above 20 EeV with zenith angles up to 80 deg recorded before 2017 April 30. Sky models have been created for two distinct populations of extragalactic gamma-ray emitters: active galactic nuclei from the second catalog of hard Fermi-LAT sources (2FHL) and starburst galaxies from a sample that was examined with Fermi-LAT. Flux-limited samples, which include all types of galaxies from the Swift-BAT and 2MASS surveys, have been investigated for comparison. The sky model of cosmic-ray density constructed using each catalog has two free parameters, the fraction of events correlating with astrophysical objects and an angular scale characterizing the clustering of cosmic rays around extragalactic sources. A maximum-likelihood ratio test is used to evaluate the best values of these parameters and to quantify the strength of each model by contrast with isotropy. It is found that the starburst model fits the data better than the hypothesis of isotropy with a statistical significance of 4.0 sigma, the highest value of the test statistic being for energies above 39 EeV. The three alternative models are favored against isotropy with 2.7-3.2 sigma significance. Abstract: SN 2015J was discovered on April 27th 2015 and is classified as a type IIn supernova. At first, it appeared to be an orphan SN candidate, i.e. without any clear identification of its host galaxy. Here, we present the analysis of the observations carried out {by the VLT 8-m class telescope with the FORS2 camera in the R band and the Magellan telescope (6.5 m) equipped with the IMACS Short-Camera (V and I filters) and the FourStar camera (Ks filter)}. We show that SN 2015J resides in what appears to be a very compact galaxy establishing a relation between the SN event and its natural host. We also present and discuss archival and new $X$-ray data centred on SN 2015J. At the time of the supernova explosion, Swift/XRT observations were made and a weak X-ray source was detected at the location of SN 2015J. Almost one year later, the same source was unambiguously identified during serendipitous observations by Swift/XRT and $XMM$-Newton, clearly showing an enhancement of the 0.3-10 keV band flux by a factor $\simeq 30$ with respect to the initial state. Swift/XRT observations show that the source is still active in the $X$-rays at a level of $\simeq 0.05$ counts s$^{-1}$. The unabsorbed X-ray luminosity derived from the {\it XMM}-Newton slew and SWIFT observations, $L_{x}\simeq 5\times10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$, places SN 2015J among the brightest young supernovae in X-rays., Comment: The Astrophysical Journal, Volume 850, Number 2
