In industrial contexts, effective workforce allocation is crucial for operational efficiency. This paper presents an ongoing project focused on developing a decision-making tool designed for workforce allocation, emphasising the explainability to enhance its trustworthiness. Our objective is to create a system that not only optimises the allocation of teams to scheduled tasks but also provides clear, understandable explanations for its decisions, particularly in cases where the problem is infeasible. By incorporating human-in-the-loop mechanisms, the tool aims to enhance user trust and facilitate interactive conflict resolution. Recent advances in the efficiency and robustness of algorithms solving convex quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) problems motivate developing techniques for creating convex quadratic relaxations that, although more expensive to compute, provide tighter bounds than their classical linear counterparts. In the first part of this two-paper series [Strahl et al., 2024], we developed a cutting plane algorithm to construct convex quadratic underestimators for twice-differentiable convex functions, which we extend here to address the case of non-convex difference-of-convex (d.c.) functions as well. Furthermore, we generalize our approach to consider a hierarchy of quadratic forms, thereby allowing the construction of even tighter underestimators. On a set of d.c. functions extracted from benchmark libraries, we demonstrate noteworthy reduction in the hypervolume between our quadratic underestimators and linear ones constructed at the same points. Additionally, we construct convex QCQP relaxations at the root node of a spatial branch-and-bound tree for a set of systematically created d.c. optimization problems in up to four dimensions, and we show that our relaxations reduce the gap between the lower bound computed by the state-of-the-art global optimization solver BARON and the optimal solution by an excess of 90%, on average.

When computing bounds, spatial branch-and-bound algorithms often linearly outer approximate convex relaxations for non-convex expressions in order to capitalize on the efficiency and robustness of linear programming solvers. Considering that linear outer approximations sacrifice accuracy when approximating highly nonlinear functions and recognizing the recent advancements in the efficiency and robustness of available methods to solve optimization problems with quadratic objectives and constraints, we contemplate here the construction of quadratic outer approximations of twice-differentiable convex functions for use in deterministic global optimization. To this end, we present a novel cutting-plane algorithm that determines the tightest scaling parameter, $\alpha$, in the second-order Taylor series approximation quadratic underestimator proposed by Su et al. We use a representative set of convex functions extracted from optimization benchmark libraries to showcase--qualitatively and quantitatively--the tightness of the constructed quadratic underestimators and to demonstrate the overall computational efficiency of our algorithm. Furthermore, we extend our construction procedure to generate even tighter quadratic underestimators by allowing overestimation in infeasible polyhedral regions of optimization problems, as informed by the latter's linear constraints.

The paper introduces CycleIK, a neuro-robotic approach that wraps two novel neuro-inspired methods for the inverse kinematics (IK) task, a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), and a Multi-Layer Perceptron architecture. These methods can be used in a standalone fashion, but we also show how embedding these into a hybrid neuro-genetic IK pipeline allows for further optimization via sequential least-squares programming (SLSQP) or a genetic algorithm (GA). The models are trained and tested on dense datasets that were collected from random robot configurations of the new Neuro-Inspired COLlaborator (NICOL), a semi-humanoid robot with two redundant 8-DoF manipulators. We utilize the weighted multi-objective function from the state-of-the-art BioIK method to support the training process and our hybrid neuro-genetic architecture. We show that the neural models can compete with state-of-the-art IK approaches, which allows for deployment directly to robotic hardware. Increasing anthropomorphic robot behavioral design could affect trust and cooperation positively. However, studies have shown contradicting results and suggest a task-dependent relationship between robots that display emotions and trust. Therefore, this study analyzes the effect of robots that display human-like emotions on trust, cooperation, and participants' emotions. In the between-group study, participants play the coin entrustment game with an emotional and a non-emotional robot. The results show that the robot that displays emotions induces more anxiety than the neutral robot. Accordingly, the participants trust the emotional robot less and are less likely to cooperate. Furthermore, the perceived intelligence of a robot increases trust, while a desire to outcompete the robot can reduce trust and cooperation. Robotic platforms that can efficiently collaborate with humans in physical tasks constitute a major goal in robotics. However, many existing robotic platforms are either designed for social interaction or industrial object manipulation tasks. The design of collaborative robots seldom emphasizes both their social interaction and physical collaboration abilities. To bridge this gap, we present the novel semi-humanoid NICOL, the Neuro-Inspired COLlaborator. NICOL is a large, newly designed, scaled-up version of its well-evaluated predecessor, the Neuro-Inspired COmpanion (NICO). NICOL adopts NICO's head and facial expression display and extends its manipulation abilities in terms of precision, object size, and workspace size. Our contribution in this paper is twofold -- firstly, we introduce the design concept for NICOL, and secondly, we provide an evaluation of NICOL's manipulation abilities by presenting a novel extension for an end-to-end hybrid neuro-genetic visuomotor learning approach adapted to NICOL's more complex kinematics. We show that the approach outperforms the state-of-the-art Inverse Kinematics (IK) solvers KDL, TRACK-IK and BIO-IK. Overall, this article presents for the first time the humanoid robot NICOL, and contributes to the integration of social robotics and neural visuomotor learning for humanoid robots.

Human eye gaze plays an important role in delivering information, communicating intent, and understanding others' mental states. Previous research shows that a robot's gaze can also affect humans' decision-making and strategy during an interaction. However, limited studies have trained humanoid robots on gaze-based data in human-robot interaction scenarios. Considering gaze impacts the naturalness of social exchanges and alters the decision process of an observer, it should be regarded as a crucial component in human-robot interaction. To investigate the impact of robot gaze on humans, we propose an embodied neural model for performing human-like gaze shifts. This is achieved by extending a social attention model and training it on eye-tracking data, collected by watching humans playing a game. Recent developments in explainable artificial intelligence promise the potential to transform human-robot interaction: Explanations of robot decisions could affect user perceptions, justify their reliability, and increase trust. However, the effects on human perceptions of robots that explain their decisions have not been studied thoroughly. To analyze the effect of explainable robots, we conduct a study in which two simulated robots play a competitive board game. While one robot explains its moves, the other robot only announces them. Providing explanations for its actions was not sufficient to change the perceived competence, intelligence, likeability or safety ratings of the robot. However, the results show that the robot that explains its moves is perceived as more lively and human-like. To enhance human-robot social interaction, it is essential for robots to process multiple social cues in a complex real-world environment. However, incongruency of input information across modalities is inevitable and could be challenging for robots to process. To tackle this challenge, our study adopted the neurorobotic paradigm of crossmodal conflict resolution to make a robot express human-like social attention. A behavioural experiment was conducted on 37 participants for the human study. We designed a round-table meeting scenario with three animated avatars to improve ecological validity. Each avatar wore a medical mask to obscure the facial cues of the nose, mouth, and jaw. The central avatar shifted its eye gaze while the peripheral avatars generated sound. Gaze direction and sound locations were either spatially congruent or incongruent. We observed that the central avatar's dynamic gaze could trigger crossmodal social attention responses. In particular, human performances are better under the congruent audio-visual condition than the incongruent condition. Our saliency prediction model was trained to detect social cues, predict audio-visual saliency, and attend selectively for the robot study. After mounting the trained model on the iCub, the robot was exposed to laboratory conditions similar to the human experiment. In this paper, we investigate the roles that social robots can take in physical exercise with human partners. In related work, robots or virtual intelligent agents take the role of a coach or instructor whereas in other approaches they are used as motivational aids. These are two "paradigms", so to speak, within the small but growing area of robots for social exercise. We designed an online questionnaire to test whether the preferred role in which people want to see robots would be the companion or the coach. The questionnaire asks people to imagine working out with a robot with the help of three utilized questionnaires: (1) CART-Q which is used for judging coach-athlete relationships, (2) the mind perception questionnaire and (3) the System Usability Scale (SUS).
