The global COVID-19 pandemic revealed the necessity for mobile and web-based solutions for a variety of medical processes, e.g., individual risk calculation, communication of health information and contact tracing. Many such solutions are provided in form of open source software. However, there are major obstacles to the sustainable long-term continuation of such projects. As the topic of sustainability strategies is complex, a classification would be useful to help new projects to identify relevant sustainability factors. Based on a literature review a classification for long-term success of open source software was created. This paper presents a classification focusing on five unique categories: (1) structural decision, (2) revenue generation, (3) user focus, (4) openness and (5) community building. It was developed within the NUM-COMPASS project, focusing content-wise on pandemic apps and structure-wise on open-source provision. We provide some insights into the community building dimension by discussing factors that go into building sustainable communities.

Former guest workers in Germany who stayed on after retirement are now older than 70 years. Nursing homes (NH) are broadening their offer to meet specific requirements of this population. The nutritional status and related problems of the older ethnic minority group living in German NH has so far not been investigated. The aim of this study was, thus, to compare the nutritional situation of older migrants to that of native residents in two "multicultural" NH (cross-sectional study). All residents 65 years and older with a migration background were enrolled and compared to nonmigrants using frequency matching for age and gender. Nutritional status was assessed using body mass index (BMI; cut-off for undernourishment: BMI < 22 kg/m(2)) and calf circumference (CC; CC < 31 cm). Care staff completed a questionnaire on residents' health. Consecutive 3-day food records were evaluated to analyze the intake of energy, macro-, and micronutrients. Participants were n = 23 migrants (76 ± 6 years, 52% female) and n = 37 nonmigrants (78 ± 7 years, 59% female). Undernourishment was more prevalent in migrants according to BMI (39 vs. 11%; P < 0.05) and CC (57 vs. 22%; P < 0.05). Main nutritional problems in both groups were "loss of appetite" (56 vs. 19%; P < 0.05) and "refusal to eat" (56 vs. 25%; P < 0.05). Energy intake was low (6.4 ± 1.4, 6.8 ± 1.6 MJ/d). More than 50% of participants fell below recommended values for vitamin C, B1, B6, D, folate, calcium, and iron; 61% of the migrants had a low vitamin B12 intake. Migrant NH residents were more often undernourished than German NH residents.

Modification of a traditional live-dead staining technique based on fluorescence microscopy has yielded an improved method capable of differentiating surface-immobilized antimicrobial agents from those agents acting via solution diffusion processes. By utilizing an inoculation chamber comprised of 50 µm polystyrene spheres as spacers between test substrate and coverslip control surfaces, three distinct bacterial cell populations can be probed by fluorescence microscopy for antimicrobial activity: (1) cells adhered to the coverslip, (2) cells adhered to the substrate, and (3) mobile cells in solution. Truly immobilized antimicrobial agents were found efficacious only at the substrate surface, while elutable agents were effective against all three populations. Glass surfaces derivatized with either quaternized poly dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate (pDMAEMA) or 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride (Si-QAC) were compared with bare glass control surfaces after contact and 4 h incubation with Staphylococcus aureus. pDMAEMA surfaces were both antimicrobial and immobilized, whereas the Si-QAC surfaces were only observed to be antimicrobial via active diffusion. In contrast to conventional thinking, Si-QAC surfaces showed no kill after removing all Si-QAC elutables via rinsing procedures. The semi-quantitative surface-separated live-dead staining (SSLDS) technique provides mechanistic insight and represents a significant improvement relative to current microbiological test methods for evaluating immobilized, antimicrobial agents., (© 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

The Attention Network Test (ANT) provides measures for three different components of visual attention: executive control (=conflict inhibition), orienting, and alerting. There is reasonable evidence that alterations of attention-mainly in the executive/conflict domain-are associated with susceptibility to psychiatric illness. Specific impairments may be a characteristic for a medical condition such as schizophrenia and thus shift our understanding from a neuropsychological endophenotype to a more precise genetic understanding of this disorder. Study subjects comprised 35 schizophrenic patients and 35 healthy controls (13 female and 22 male in both groups). The ANT was administered to all participants and rated individual responses for the three factors (alerting, orienting, and conflict) and their respective ratios relative to mean reaction times. With regard to gender differences, group comparisons were performed for schizophrenic patients vs. healthy controls. Significant differences between patients and controls could be detected for mean reaction time (639 vs. 538 ms) and for conflict ratio (0.158 vs. 0.191). The latter difference mainly resulted from gender-specific variances of the conflict network in opposite directions. The executive function as represented by the conflict network of visual attention of the ANT is affected in schizophrenia. We have detected hitherto unreported gender-specific differences between healthy controls and schizophrenic patients. Especially as regards the conflict network, the ANT offers a promising methodology to detect a neuropsychological endophenotype of schizophrenia.

Background: Associations between the well-known functional single nucleotide polymorphism Val (158)Met in the gene encoding catechol- O-methyltransferase (COMT) and cognitive do-mains affected in schizophrenia are inconsistent regarding directionality and specific impact and call for a more fundamental cognitive endophenotype. Recent studies suggest that the COMT genotype contributes to cognitive flexibility, a fundamental cognitive ability that potentially influences an individual's performance in a variety of other neurocognitive tasks., Methods: We investigated the association between COMT Val (158)Met genotype and cognitive flexibility as assessed by signal discrimination in the Continuous Performance Test - Identical Pairs version in a cohort of 111 German schizophrenic patients., Results: COMT genotype was significantly associated with signal discrimination index d' in schizophrenia. The Val/Val genotype was associated with the highest and the Met/Met genotype with the lowest scores; heterozygous individuals displayed an intermediate performance., Conclusions: Our data suggest that allelic variation at the COMT Val (158)Met locus may influence signal discrimination capacity in schizophrenia and confirm that Val loading, probably due to decreased prefrontal dopamine availability, is associated with greater cognitive flexibility, which in turn may influence other cognitive measures that have been associated with COMT to date.

Introduction: Maternal perception of her child's weight status has been hypothesised to affect a child's weight development., Objective: The aim of this analysis was to determine in how far the maternal weight perception of her child's weight at different ages is related to its future body weight status., Materials and Methods: Longitudinal data on body weight, height and skinfolds from the Dortmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed Study were used to determine the risk of being overweight at age 7. Complete data on anthropometry, maternal weight perception and confounding variables were available for 253 children., Results and Discussion: Maternal weight perception assessments at age 6 months, 12 months, 2 years and 4 years of age were related to body weight status as well as changes in body mass index standard deviation score (BMI-SDS) and skinfold SDS between age at assessment and age 7. With respect to the risk of being overweight at age 7, no independent effect of maternal perception was found. When changes in anthropometric measures were considered, it could be observed that children whose weight was considered too low gained more weight until age 7, and those who were considered to be too heavy lost more weight as compared to the children whose weight was considered to be just right. Among infants aged 6 months who were above the 85th percentile, maternal misperception appeared to promote an unfavourable weight development. These latter results support the hypothesis that maternal weight perception might affect a child's weight development., Conclusion: As our data suggest, this effect might begin to operate already in infancy.

The objective of the reported study was to assess the abilities of various methods to differentiate the sources of fats used in feedstuff formulations. The main target was the identification of tallow (ruminant fat) and its differentiation from non-ruminant fats. Four different techniques were compared in terms of their suitability for enforcing existing and upcoming legislation on animal by-products: (1) Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) applied to fat samples, (2) gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to determine fatty acid profiles, (3) immunoassays focusing on the protein fraction included in the fat, and (4) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the detection of bovine-specific DNA. Samples of the different fats and oils as well as mixtures of these fats were probed using these analytical methods. FT-IR and GC-MS differentiated pure fat samples quite well but showed limited ability to identify the animal species or even the animal class the fat(s) belonged to; no single compound or spectral signal that could permit species identification could be found. However, immunoassays and PCR were both able to identify the species or groups of species that the fats originated from, and they were the only techniques able to identify low concentrations of tallow in a mixture of fats prepared by the rendering industry, even when the samples had been sterilised at temperatures >133 degrees C. Fats used in animal nutrition come mainly from the rendering industry, thereby confirming the suitability of PCR and immunoassays for their identification. However, neither of these latter techniques was able to detect "premier jus" tallow, representing the highest quality standard of fat with extremely low protein concentration.
