This paper provides new and improved estimates of wealth concentration in India during 2012–2018. Official surveys show a decline in wealth inequality and mean wealth per adult for the first time in three decades. We argue that although these wealth surveys are meant to be nationally representative, they underestimate the upper tail of the Indian wealth distribution—top wealth levels appear orders of magnitudes below externally measured estimates and unrepresentative of increasing stock‐market participation over this period. By combining official surveys and rich lists, we provide new estimates of top wealth shares and total personal wealth in India. We find that personal wealth is underestimated by nearly 54 percent in official data, and this gap increased sharply during the 2010s. Our revised estimates show wealth concentration to have sharply increased during 2012–2018. The share of India's top 1 percent is higher than similar estimates for Asia, and second only to Russia. Aircraft observations of the four chloromethanes: carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), methyl chloride (CH3Cl), dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), and chloroform (CHCl3), collected over North America between 2000 and 2022, were used to evaluate their vertical distributions and temporal trends in the atmosphere. We examine the vertical profiles, from the surface to the lower stratosphere (LS), of these increasingly important contributors to ozone‐depleting chlorine in both altitude and potential temperature space. Airborne chloromethane trends were compared with those measured at long‐term, ground‐based monitoring stations. Below 20 km altitude, CCl4 trends were decreasing at all levels studied in the North American atmosphere (−1.1 ppt yr−1). CHCl3 and CH2Cl2 airborne observations were comparable to ground network measurements: CHCl3 increased between 2000 and 2018 and then decreased leading to a negligible trend over the 22 years studied and CH2Cl2 has been increasing at all levels in the troposphere (+2.41 ppt yr−1, 2000–2022, <20 km). The 2022 eruption of the Hunga submarine volcano injected an unprecedented volume of water vapor into the stratosphere, presenting a unique, natural experiment for ascertaining the influence of stratospheric water vapor within the global radiation budget. This study examines the radiative forcings of the Hunga stratospheric water vapor enhancement, comparing stratosphere-adjusted radiative forcing derived from offline methods to an effective radiative forcing derived from Earth System Model simulations. Assuming a uniform 2 parts per million mass mixing ratio increase of water vapor in the Southern Hemisphere stratosphere, we estimated the instantaneous, stratosphere-adjusted, and overall effective radiative forcing to be -0.04, 0.08, and 0.05 W m-2, respectively. The lower magnitude of the positive volcanic stratospheric water vapor effective radiative forcing is due to compensating effects from atmospheric adjustments. Ensemble simulations of a coupled atmosphere-ocean model suggest a surface warming of 0.05 K, affirming a limited influence on global mean surface temperature from the volcanic stratospheric water vapor injection. The variability of stratospheric water vapor (SWV) plays a crucial role in stratospheric chemistry and Earth's energy budget, strongly influenced by sea surface temperature (SST). In this study, we systematically investigate the response of lower-SWV (LSWV) to regional sea surface temperature changes using idealized SST patch experiments within a climate model. The results indicate that LSWV is most sensitive to tropical sea surface temperature, with the strongest response occurring in late autumn and early winter. Warming of the tropical Indian Ocean and western Pacific (WP) leads to stratospheric drying, while warming of the tropical Atlantic (TA) and eastern Pacific results in stratospheric moistening. The drying impact on LSWV due to warming in the western Pacific Ocean exceeds the wet effect in the eastern Pacific Ocean by approximately 60%. The variations in tropical SST influence LSWV by modulating the temperature at the tropical tropopause layer, especially over the Indo-Pacific warm pool through Matsuno–Gill responses. Furthermore, the response of LSWV to tropical SST changes exhibits nonnegligible nonlinearity, which indicates the importance of nonlinearity in determining the LSWV response to global surface warming. Significance Statement: In this study, we explore how changes in the temperature of the ocean's surface can affect the amount of water vapor in the stratosphere, a layer of Earth's atmosphere. Understanding this relationship is important because water vapor in the stratosphere can influence both our climate and the chemistry of the atmosphere. Using a climate model, we found that water vapor in the lower stratosphere is especially responsive to temperature changes in tropical ocean regions. Specifically, when the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific get warmer, the stratosphere tends to get drier. On the other hand, warming in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific leads to more moisture in the stratosphere. The way these changes add up is complex and not simply a sum of individual parts, especially in tropical warm pool regions. The study presents (a) a 44‐year wintertime climatology of resolved gravity wave (GW) fluxes and forcing in the extratropical stratosphere using ERA5, and (b) their composite evolution around gradual (final warming) and abrupt (sudden warming) transitions in the wintertime circulation, focusing on lateral fluxes. The transformed Eulerian mean equations are leveraged to provide a glimpse of the importance of GW lateral propagation (i.e., horizontal propagation) toward driving the wintertime stratospheric circulation by analyzing the relative contribution of the vertical versus meridional flux dissipation. The relative contribution from lateral propagation is found to be notable, especially in the Austral winter stratosphere where lateral (vertical) momentum flux convergence provides a peak climatological forcing of up to −0.5 (−3.5) m/s/day around 60°S at 40–45 km altitude. Prominent lateral propagation in the wintertime midlatitudes also contributes to the formation of belts of GW activity in both hemispheres. Plain Language Summary: Atmospheric Gravity Waves (GWs) are atmospheric disturbances created by processes like convection, thunderstorms, flow over topography, etc. These waves can have wavelengths as small as 1 km to as large as 1,000–2,000 km. Most atmospheric GWs are not resolved in coarse‐resolution climate models. As a result, they are represented in climate models using parameterizations, which are approximate models that can be subject to various idealizations. One such idealization is the assumption of pure vertical propagation of GWs. In this study, we use multidecadal records from ERA5 reanalysis—which combines a high‐resolution model with assimilated observations to produce a close‐to‐observed state of the atmosphere and resolves some of these GWs—to quantify the impact of this assumption on the mean state of the extratropical stratosphere. This is done by extracting GWs from ERA5 data, computing horizontal momentum fluxes carried by these waves, and comparing the net acceleration/deceleration provided by these fluxes on the peak winter stratospheric circulation and key episodes of abrupt changes in the circulation. Analysis using ERA5 reveals that horizontal propagation of GWs can be notable in the midlatitude stratosphere, highlighting the need to develop GW parameterizations that represent this essential property of atmospheric GWs. We calculate the climate forcing for the 2 ys after the 15 January 2022, Hunga Tonga‐Hunga Ha'apai (Hunga) eruption. We use satellite observations of stratospheric aerosols, trace gases and temperatures to compute the tropopause radiative flux changes relative to climatology. Overall, the net downward radiative flux decreased compared to climatology. The Hunga stratospheric water vapor anomaly initially increases the downward infrared radiative flux, but this forcing diminishes as the anomaly disperses. The Hunga aerosols cause a solar flux reduction that dominates the net flux change over most of the 2 yrs period. Hunga induced temperature changes produce a decrease in downward long‐wave flux. Hunga induced ozone reduction increases the short‐wave downward flux creating small sub‐tropical increase in total flux from mid‐2022 to 2023. By the end of 2023, most of the Hunga induced radiative forcing changes have disappeared. There is some disagreement in the satellite measured stratospheric aerosol optical depth (SAOD) observations which we view as a measure of the uncertainty; however, the SAOD uncertainty does not alter our conclusion that, overall, aerosols dominate the radiative flux changes. During February 2023, the quasi‐4‐day wave (Q4DW) with westward zonal wavenumber 2 (W2) reached its largest amplitude of ∼400 m in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) geopotential height observations since 2004, which occurred simultaneously with an Arctic major sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) with an elevated stratopause (ES). However, the Q4DW‐W2 perturbations in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) were unexpectedly suppressed despite the unstable Arctic stratosphere and mesosphere during the 2023 ES‐SSW. Diagnostic analysis shows that the westward winds at ∼54°N–70°N in the upper stratosphere of ∼‐79 m/s during the 2023 ES‐SSW were the strongest during boreal winters over the past two decades, which benefited from the onset of a preceding minor SSW at the end of January. The strongest westward wind generated a wave geometry configuration of full reflection for Q4DW‐W2 in the NH, while the Q4DW‐W2 enhancement in the SH was induced by the in‐situ amplification of the surviving seeding perturbations. We found that the rare sequence of stratospheric disturbances in the 44‐year historical record that a minor SSW followed by an ES‐SSW led to the excessively strong westward wind during the 2023 ES‐SSW, which resulted in a wave geometry configuration of full reflection for Q4DW‐W2 in the Northern Hemisphere. Our current results well establish the relationship between a new global structure of traveling planetary waves during SSW and the rare sequence of stratospheric disturbances. This will deepen the understanding of the less studied Q4DW‐W2 and the Earth's whole atmospheric coupling during SSW. Distinctive synoptic‐scale (∼1,500 km) flow features are identified within the core of the stratospheric polar‐night vortex at stratopause altitudes (∼50 km). Typically they comprise a train or a complex pattern of transient vortices, each characterized by enhanced values of potential vorticity (PV) and relative vorticity but with a weaker thermal signal. In the MERRA‐2 (and two other) reanalysis fields these cyclone‐like features persist for several days, occur episodically, and form essentially within the core of the polar‐night vortex itself. Their origin is plausibly linked to a form of barotropic instability associated with a radiatively‐induced annular ring of enhanced PV. Moreover, their ubiquity and dynamics carries possible implications for: ‐ the structure of the larger‐scale polar vortex and its preconditioning ahead of a Sudden Stratospheric Warming event; the distribution of trace‐constituents within the core; and the features representation in extended range/seasonal prediction and climate models. Plain Language Summary: In wintertime the earth's stratospheric polar vortex extends from a height of around 15 km to well above 50 km and equatorward to around 30° from the pole. Australian mega-wildfires in the summer of 2019-2020 injected smoke into the stratosphere, causing strong ozone depletion in the lower stratosphere. Here, we model the smoke plume and reproduce its unexpected trajectory toward the middle stratosphere at ~35-kilometer altitude. We show that a smoke-charged vortex (SCV) induced and maintained by absorbing aerosols played a key role in lofting pollutants from the lower stratosphere and nearly doubled the southern hemispheric aerosol burden in the middle stratosphere. The SCV caused a redistribution of stratospheric aerosols, which boosted heterogeneous chemistry in the middle stratosphere and enhanced ozone production, compensating for up to 70% of the ozone depletion in the lower stratosphere. As global warming continues, we expect a growing frequency and importance of SCVs in promoting the impacts of wildfires on stratospheric aerosols and chemistry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A three‐dimensional winter (DJF) climatology of Lagrangian diffusivity characterizing eddy mixing and transport in the northern middle atmosphere is presented. To emphasize aspects other than zonal averages, we use the theory of Lagrangian diffusivity (κyy) hitherto not applied in stratospheric contexts to our knowledge. Our formulation of Lagrangian diffusivity requires the calculation of parcel trajectories, which is made on isentropic surfaces. A Lagrangian descriptor is used to estimate the boundary of the stratospheric polar vortex (SPV). To characterize quasi‐geostrophic motions and their influence on the SPV we apply the wave activity flux (W) and Local Wave Activity (A) $(\mathcal{A})$. Our data set is the ERA5 reanalysis for the period 1979–2013. Results for κyy show important zonal asymmetries. In the lower and middle stratosphere, κyy is highest at midlatitudes, particularly around the prime meridian. This location is surrounded by manifolds associated with hyperbolic trajectories emanating from the outer SPV boundary. κyy is also high within the SPV, and near the locations where the SPV boundary is open. Zonal asymmetries are also clear in W at midlatitudes. The larger values of A $\mathcal{A}$ are at high latitudes and upstream of the opening of the vortex boundary. The role of quasi‐geostrophic waves on the south‐north shift of the midlatitude westerlies is highlighted. In particular, the waves contribute to open the SPV boundary at around 90W. The interannual variability of κyy is explored by contrasting winters with positive‐negative Northern Annular Mode index, and Sudden Stratospheric Warmings of displacement‐split type. The approach is based on the concept of Lagrangian diffusivity, a measure of how quickly air parcels mix together. We employ a Lagrangian descriptor, a tool based on parcel trajectory length, to locate the stratospheric polar vortex SPV boundary. Also, we investigate the influence of quasi‐geostrophic motions on the SPV using wave activity flux and local wave activity (LWA). The data set is the ERA5 reanalysis from 1979 to 2013. The results reveal pronounced zonal asymmetries in Lagrangian diffusivity and wave activity flux. Mixing is highest at midlatitudes around the prime meridian and at locations within the SPV. LWA is elevated at high latitudes and upstream of the climatological vortex boundary opening, highlighting the role of quasi‐geostrophic waves in the southward displacement of midlatitude westerlies. Comparisons are made of diffusivity during weak and strong vortex winters, as well as of during winters with and without Sudden Stratospheric Warmings. We analyze the sources for spread in the response of the Northern Hemisphere wintertime stratospheric polar vortex (SPV) to global warming in Climate Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) and Phase 6 (CMIP6) model projections. About half of the intermodel spread in SPV projections by CMIP6 models, but less than a third in CMIP5 models, can be attributed to the intermodel spread in stationary planetary wave driving. In CMIP6, SPV weakening is mostly driven by increased upward wave flux from the troposphere, while SPV strengthening is associated with increased equatorward wave propagation away from the polar stratosphere. We test hypothesized factors contributing to changes in the upward and equatorward planetary wave fluxes and show that an across‐model regression using projected global warming rates, strengthening of the subtropical jet and basic state lower stratospheric wind biases as predictors can explain nearly the same fraction in the CMIP6 SPV spread as the planetary wave driving (r = 0.67). The dependence of the SPV spread on the model biases in the basic state winds offers a possible emergent constraint; however, a large uncertainty prevents a substantial reduction of the projected SPV spread. The lack of this dependence in CMIP5 further calls for better understanding of underlying causes. Our results improve understanding of projected SPV uncertainty; however, further narrowing of the uncertainty remains challenging. However, climate models do not agree on whether the polar vortex will weaken or strengthen during the 21st century. Here, we use Climate Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) and Phase 6 (CMIP6) experiments to better understand how the polar vortex will respond to future greenhouse gas emissions. We show that changes in the propagation of large‐scale atmospheric waves can explain nearly half of the spread in the vortex strength projections by the end of the 21st century by CMIP6 models. Increased upward propagation of the waves to the stratosphere leads to vortex weakening while increased equatorward propagation within the stratosphere leads to strengthening. We identify three factors associated with projected changes in the vortex strength across CMIP6 models: projected rates of global warming, projected rates of subtropical jet stream strengthening and model errors in lower stratospheric winds in the past climate. Stronger global warming rates and stronger past lower stratospheric winds are associated with vortex strengthening, while larger strengthening of the subtropical jet stream is associated with weakening. However, these relationships are weak in CMIP5 models. Using a reanalysis dataset, this work investigates the possible connection of winter East Asia (EA) flow patterns to stratospheric polar vortex (SPV) anomalies. Cluster analysis is performed on the principal components of daily 500 hPa geopotential height fields to identify five distinct flow patterns. SPV anomalies are considered in terms of the occurrence of major sudden stratospheric warmings (MSSWs). The results reveal that for the 15 days before the MSSWs, one of the five patterns occurs more frequently than usual, whereas another occurs less frequently. The former constructively interferes with the climatological EA trough in the troposphere and strengthens the planetary wave activity (heat flux) in the extratropical troposphere and stratosphere. It has a similar pattern in the 500 hPa height to the composite leading to the MSSWs, implying that such strengthening can contribute to the forcing of the MSSWs. The latter is in the opposite sense (destructive interference) and is disadvantageous before the MSSWs. Evidence of a stratospheric downward influence on the five flow patterns is relatively unclear. These results suggest a potential coupling between flow patterns or weather regimes in different regions through the SPV, as well as warrant further investigation of the downward influence on EA weather regimes. The Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) satellite operated by the European Space Agency has carried the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) on a Sun-synchronous low-Earth orbit since 13 October 2017. The S5P mission has acquired more than 5 years of TROPOMI nadir ozone profile data retrieved from the level 0 to 1B processor version 2.0 and the level 1B to 2 optimal-estimation-based processor version 2.4.0. The latter is described in detail in this work, followed by the geophysical validation of the resulting ozone profiles for the period May 2018 to April 2023. Comparison of TROPOMI ozone profile data to co-located ozonesonde and lidar measurements used as references concludes to a median agreement better than 5 % to 10 % in the troposphere. The bias goes up to - 15 % in the upper stratosphere (35–45 km) where it can exhibit vertical oscillations. The comparisons show a dispersion of about 30 % in the troposphere and 10 % to 20 % in the upper troposphere to lower stratosphere and in the middle stratosphere, which is close to mission requirements. Chi-square tests of the observed differences confirm on average the validity of the ex ante (prognostic) satellite and ground-based data uncertainty estimates in the middle stratosphere above about 20 km. Around the tropopause and below, the mean chi-square value increases up to about four, meaning that the ex ante TROPOMI uncertainty is underestimated. The information content of the ozone profile retrieval is characterised by about five to six vertical subcolumns of independent information and a vertical sensitivity (i.e. the fraction of the information that originates from the measurement) nearly equal to unity at altitudes from about 20 to 50 km, decreasing rapidly at altitudes above and below. The barycentre of the retrieved information is usually close to the nominal retrieval altitude in the 20–50 km altitude range, with positive and negative offsets of up to 10 km below and above this range, respectively. The effective vertical resolution of the profile retrieval usually ranges within 10–15 km, with a minimum close to 7 km in the middle stratosphere. Increased sensitivities and higher effective vertical resolutions are observed at higher solar zenith angles (above about 60°), as can be expected, and correlate with higher retrieved ozone concentrations. The vertical sensitivity of the TROPOMI tropospheric ozone retrieval is found to depend on the solar zenith angle, which translates into a seasonal and meridian dependence of the bias with respect to reference measurements. A similar although smaller effect can be seen for the viewing zenith angle. Additionally, the bias is negatively correlated with the surface albedo for the lowest three ozone subcolumns (0–18 km), despite the albedo's apparently slightly positive correlation with the retrieval degrees of freedom in the signal. For the 5 years of TROPOMI ozone profile data that are available now, an overall positive drift is detected for the same three subcolumns, while a negative drift is observed above (24–32 km), resulting in a negligible vertically integrated drift. We present an improved approach to generating moist baroclinically unstable background states for f-plane-channel simulations via potential vorticity (PV) inversion. Previous studies specified PV distributions with constant values in the troposphere and the stratosphere, but this produces unrealistic static-stability profiles that decrease sharply with height in the troposphere. Adding moisture to such environments can yield unrealistically large values of convective available potential energy (CAPE) even for reasonable relative humidity (RH) distributions. In our modified approach, we specify a PV distribution that increases with height in the troposphere and the stratosphere, yielding background states with more realistic values of static stability and CAPE. This modification produces environments that are better suited for representing moist processes, namely, deep convection, in idealized extratropical-cyclone simulations. Also, we present a method for introducing moisture that preserves a specified RH distribution while maintaining hydrostatic balance. Our approach allows for a large degree of control over the initial conditions, as background states with different jet strengths and shapes, average temperatures, moisture contents, or horizontal shears can easily be obtained without changing the underlying PV formula and inadvertently producing unreasonable values of static stability or CAPE. We demonstrate the characteristics of idealized extratropical cyclones developing in our background states by adding localized perturbations that represent an upper-level trough passing over a low-level frontal zone. The thermal analysis of stratospheric balloon payloads is still a complex task due to the variable thermal environment during the flight phases as well as due to the convective effects during the ascent. An experiment named HERCCULES has been successfully launched from Esrange Space Centre (Kiruna, Sweden) in September 2023 as part of the REXUS/BEXUS programme. This experiment aimed of serving as a heat transfer and thermal environment characterization platform that allow to validate previously developed methodologies for the worst-case thermal environmental conditions' selection and the thermal analysis of these platforms. The experiment has been developed in an academic environment and the design, manufacturing, integration and test activities were mainly performed by Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. students with the mentorship of the European Space Agency. A low-cost design was achieved by using Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) without compromising its performance capabilities. The obtained measurements show a colder behavior of the external elements with regard to the worst-case analysis during the first part of the ascent phase. In addition, radiative fluxes measured during the flight show a deviation in the infrared downward flux of about -50 W m−2 at 5 km of altitude and a maximum fluctuation of about the 20% in the solar fluxes measurements. Significant advancements have been made for similar missions in terms of mechanical standardization, the use of COTS sensors and electronic components, the improvement of the reliability of the thermal analysis and the development of a software design adhered to standards and recommendations for critical systems. • A university experiment for a stratospheric balloon flight has been design using COTS. • The heat transfer and thermal environment characterization experiments on board HERCCULES are described. • An overview of the mechanical, electronic, thermal and software design and tests is included. • Preliminary results of the flight on board BEXUS 32 are presented. Ozone trends in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) remain highly uncertain because of sharp spatial gradients and high variability caused by competing transport, chemical, and mixing processes near the upper-tropospheric jets and extratropical tropopause as well as inhomogeneous spatially and temporally limited observations of the region. Subtropical jets and the tropopause act as transport barriers, delineating boundaries between atmospheric regimes controlled by different processes; they can thus be used to separate data taken in those different regimes for numerous purposes, including trend assessment. As part of the Observed Composition Trends And Variability in the UTLS (OCTAV-UTLS) Stratosphere-troposphere Processes And their Role in Climate (SPARC) activity, we assess the effectiveness of several coordinate systems in segregating air into different atmospheric regimes. To achieve this, a comprehensive dynamical dataset is used to reference every measurement from various observing systems to the locations of jets and tropopauses in different coordinates (e.g., altitude, pressure, potential temperature, latitude, and equivalent latitude). We assess which coordinate combinations are most useful for dividing the measurements into bins such that the data in each bin are affected by the same processes, thus minimizing the variability induced when combining measurements from different dynamical regimes, each characterized by different physical processes. Such bins will be particularly suitable for combining measurements with different sampling characteristics and for assessing trends and attributing them to changing atmospheric dynamics. Overall, the use of equivalent latitude and potential temperature leads to the most substantial reduction in binned variability across the UTLS. Tropopause-overshooting convection in the midlatitudes provides a rapid transport pathway for air from the lower troposphere to reach the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) and can result in the formation of above-anvil cirrus plumes (AACPs) that significantly hydrate the stratosphere. Such UTLS composition changes alter the radiation budget and impact climate. Novel in situ observations from the NASA Dynamics and Chemistry of the Summer Stratosphere (DCOTSS) field campaign are used in this study to examine UTLS impacts from AACP-generating overshooting convection. Namely, a research flight on 31 May 2022 sampled active convection over the state of Oklahoma for more than 3 h with the NASA ER-2 high-altitude research aircraft. An AACP was bisected during this flight, providing the first such extensive in situ sampling of this phenomenon. The convective observations reveal pronounced changes in air mass composition and stratospheric hydration up to altitudes of 2.3 km above the tropopause and concentrations more than double background levels. Unique dynamic and trace gas signatures were found within the AACP, including enhanced vertical mixing near the AACP edge and a positive correlation between water vapor and ozone. Moreover, the water vapor enhancement within the AACP was found to be limited to the saturation mixing ratio of the low temperature overshoot and AACP air. Comparison with all remaining DCOTSS flights demonstrates that the 31 May 2022 flight had some of the largest tropospheric tracer and water vapor perturbations in the stratosphere and within the AACP. The chemical composition of the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere region (UTLS) is influenced by horizontal transport of air masses, vertical transport within convective systems and warm conveyor belts, rapid turbulent mixing, as well as photochemical production or loss of species. This results in the formation of the extratropical transition layer (ExTL), which is defined by the vertical structure of CO and has been studied until now mostly by means of trace gas correlations. Here, we extend the analysis to include aerosol particles and derive the sulfate–ozone correlation in central Europe from aircraft in situ measurements during the CAFE-EU (Chemistry of the Atmosphere Field Experiment over Europe)/BLUESKY mission. The mission probed the UTLS during the COVID-19 period with significantly reduced anthropogenic emissions. We operated a compact time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (C-ToF-AMS) to measure the chemical composition of non-refractory aerosol particles in the size range from about 40 to 800 nm. In our study, we find a correlation between the sulfate mass concentration and O 3 in the lower stratosphere. The correlation exhibits some variability exceeding the mean sulfate–ozone correlation over the measurement period. Especially during one flight, we observed enhanced mixing ratios of sulfate aerosol in the lowermost stratosphere, where the analysis of trace gases shows tropospheric influence. However, back trajectories indicate that no recent mixing with tropospheric air occurred within the last 10 d. Therefore, we analyzed volcanic eruption databases and satellite SO 2 retrievals from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) for possible volcanic plumes and eruptions to explain the high amounts of sulfur compounds in the UTLS. From these analyses and the combination of precursor and particle measurements, we conclude that gas-to-particle conversion of volcanic SO 2 leads to the observed enhanced sulfate aerosol mixing ratios. Abstract Acoustic waves generated by seismic waves contain information on the internal structure of planets, and can be sensed by pressure sensors onboard high-altitude balloons. To identify the various contributions (infrasound signal, noise, balloon response, etc.) in such pressure records, a full waveform modeling is implemented and completed by infrasound ray tracing and additional data analysis. Here, we analyze the Stratéole-2 pressure data associated with two earthquakes (Garcia et al. Geophys. Res. Lett. 49(15):e98844, 2022) and compared these to full waveform simulations by SPECFEM2D-DG-LNS software. Even if our simulations do not precisely reproduce the waveform observed in the frequency range [0.05, 0.3] Hz, we show that the waveform presents more sensitivity to quake and internal structure parameters than to atmospheric structure, and that seismic surface wave dispersion is observed in balloon pressure records. The long-duration pressure oscillations observed after the main infrasonic signal cannot be fully reproduced by our one-dimensional input model even when source time function complexity and aftershocks are considered. These features are ascribed mainly to the complex vertical ground movements below the balloon and partly to late secondary infrasound arrivals excited by the interactions of seismic waves with the topography. These results enhance the advantages and limitations of quake-related infrasound observations on board terrestrial and planetary balloon platforms. Graphical Abstract

The out‐of‐phase mode of winter surface air temperature anomalies (SATAs) over northern Central Asia (NCA; 45°–65°N, 40°–100°E) between January and February is investigated in this study. This mode corresponds to warm (cold) SATAs in January (February) over NCA and is mainly modulated by the enhanced tropical convection anomalies over the Maritime Continent in previous late December, associated with MJO phase 4. These tropical convection anomalies can induce anomalous tropospheric Rossby‐wave sources over the North Pacific in late December. The eastward‐propagating Rossby‐wave train, triggered by these anomalous Rossby‐wave sources, can cause negative and positive tropospheric geopotential height anomalies over the Greenland–Scandinavia region and NCA in the following early–mid‐January, subsequently leading to warm SATAs over NCA in January. The negative geopotential height anomalies over the Greenland–Scandinavia region in early–mid‐January can trigger upward‐propagating wave activity fluxes (WAFs) into the stratosphere, resulting in negative stratospheric geopotential height anomalies in late January–early February. These stratospheric anomalies, by triggering downward‐propagating WAFs, can in turn lead to positive tropospheric geopotential height anomalies over the Greenland–Scandinavia region in early February. These anomalies over the Greenland–Scandinavia region can maintain themselves in the following mid‐ and late February by feedback of anomalous storm tracks, and cause negative geopotential height anomalies and subsequently cold SATAs over NCA in February by triggered southeastward‐propagating Rossby‐wave train. Climate models robustly project acceleration of the Brewer‐Dobson circulation (BDC) in response to climate change. However, the BDC trends simulated by comprehensive models are poorly constrained by observations, which cannot even determine the sign of potential trends. Additionally, the changing structure of the troposphere and stratosphere has received increasing attention in recent years. The extent to which vertical shifts of the circulation are driving the acceleration is under debate. In this study, we present a novel method that enables the attribution of advective BDC changes to structural changes of the circulation and of the stratosphere itself. Using this method allows studying the advective BDC trends in unprecedented detail and sheds new light into discrepancies between different data sets (reanalyses and models) at the tropopause and in the lower stratosphere. Our findings provide insights into the reliability of model projections of BDC changes and offer new possibilities for observational constraints. Approximately 150 Tg of water vapor and 0.42 Tg of sulfur dioxide were injected directly into the stratosphere by the January 2022 Hunga volcanic eruption, which represents the largest water vapor injection in the satellite era. A comparison of numerical simulations to balloon‐borne and satellite observations of the water‐rich plume suggests that particle coagulation contributed to the Hunga aerosol's effective dry radius increase from 0.2 μm in February to around 0.4 μm in March. Our model suggests that the stratospheric aerosol effective radius is persistently perturbed for years by moderate and large‐magnitude volcanic events, whereas extreme wildfire events show limited impact on the stratospheric background particle size. Our analysis further suggests that both the particle optical efficiency and the aerosols' stratospheric lifetime explain Hunga's unusually large aerosol optical depth per unit of the SO2 injection, as compared with the Pinatubo eruption. Plain Language Summary: The Hunga Tonga‐Hunga Ha'apai (HTHH) submarine volcano erupted in January 2022, injecting a modest amount of SO2 but a record amount of water vapor relative to other eruptions into the mid‐stratosphere observed in the satellite era. Atmospheric gravity waves (GWs) impact the circulation and variability of the atmosphere. Sub‐grid scale GWs, which are too small to be resolved, are parameterized in weather and climate models. However, some models are now available at resolutions at which these waves become resolved and it is important to test whether these models do this correctly. In this study, a GW resolving run of the European Center for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Integrated Forecasting System (IFS), run with a 1.4 km average grid spacing (TCo7999 resolution), is compared to observations from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument, on NASA's Aqua satellite, to test how well the model resolves GWs that AIRS can observe. In this analysis, nighttime data are used from the first 10 days of November 2018 over part of Asia and surrounding regions. The IFS run is resampled with AIRS's observational filter using two different methods for comparison. The ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis is also resampled as AIRS, to allow for comparison of how the high resolution IFS run resolves GWs compared to a lower resolution model that uses GW drag parametrizations. Wave properties are found in AIRS and the resampled models using a multi‐dimensional S‐Transform method. Orographic GWs can be seen in similar locations at similar times in all three data sets. However, wave amplitudes and momentum fluxes in the resampled IFS run are found to be significantly lower than in the observations. This could be a result of horizontal and vertical wavelengths in the IFS run being underestimated. Since the high resolution IFS run has a higher vertical resolution, and a significantly higher horizontal resolution than the satellite observations, the model is resampled as if the satellite was viewing the model atmosphere. This removes GWs with horizontal and vertical wavelengths outside of the ranges that can be seen in the observations, allowing the data sets to be compared. Gravity waves formed by wind flowing over mountain ranges can be seen at similar times and in similar locations in the IFS run and observations, but wave amplitudes in the resampled IFS run are found to be significantly lower. Perchlorate in the environment originates from both natural and anthropogenic sources. A previous study of a 300‐year Greenland ice core perchlorate record found that anthropogenic impact on environmental perchlorate became significant starting around 1980, while natural formation is the only significant source of environmental perchlorate prior to that. The study also found increased perchlorate deposition in the Arctic following certain volcanic eruptions and suggested that at least some volcanic eruptions could enhance natural perchlorate production. Here we compare the perchlorate record with the volcanic record from sulfate in the same Greenland ice core and find that only stratospheric eruptions—large eruptions injecting volcanic substances directly into the stratosphere—enhance perchlorate production. No contribution to naturally formed perchlorate is detected from non‐stratospheric eruptions. The high‐resolution ice core perchlorate data are used to quantify contributions from volcanic eruptions, non‐volcanic natural processes, as well as from human activities during different periods. For the location in the Arctic in the perchlorate Pre‐Anthropogenic Era (1701–1979), the magnitude (0.26 μg m−2 yr−1 on average) of perchlorate produced during sporadic stratospheric eruptions is comparable to that (0.23 μg m−2 yr−1) produced by non‐volcanic natural processes. In the Anthropogenic Era (1980–2006), the magnitude of both the volcanic and non‐volcanic natural perchlorate production is similar to the enhancement (0.29 μg m−2 yr−1) by human activities. In remote regions such as the Arctic, environmental perchlorate primarily comes from natural formation in the atmosphere from common‐place chemicals containing chlorine. Previously, we studied a 300‐year chronological perchlorate record from a Greenland ice core and found that, prior to 1980, perchlorate production was not affected by human activities. We also found that certain volcanic eruptions may increase the amount of perchlorate produced in the atmosphere and deposited in Greenland snow. In this study, we use the ice‐core perchlorate and sulfate data to determine that only very large eruptions can cause additional perchlorate to be formed in the atmosphere. On average, large volcanic eruptions contribute about 50% of perchlorate from all natural sources at this location in the Arctic. Since 1980, human activities have contributed approximately the same amount of perchlorate to the environment as that from all natural sources. Based on satellite observations in the Arctic stratosphere at latitudes from 61° to 66°N in the second half of 2019, Boone et al. (2022, https://doi.org/10.1029/2022jd036600) provide the impression that the aerosol in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) over the entire Arctic consisted of sulfate aerosol originating from the Raikoke volcanic eruption in the summer of 2019. Here, we show that this was most probably not the case and the aerosol layering conditions were much more complex. By combining the stratospheric aerosol typing results of Boone et al. (2022, https://doi.org/10.1029/2022jd036600) with lidar observations at 85°–86°N of Ohneiser et al. (2021, https://doi.org/10.5194/acp‐21‐15783‐2021) of a dominating wildfire smoke layer in the UTLS height range, we demonstrate that the Arctic UTLS aerosol most likely consisted of Siberian wildfire smoke in the lower part and sulfate aerosol in the upper part of the aerosol layer which extended from 7 to 19 km height and was well observable until May 2020. The smoke‐ and sulfate‐related aerosol optical thickness (AOT) fractions were about 0.7–0.8 and 0.2–0.3, respectively, according to our analysis. The sulfate AOT is in good agreement with model‐based predictions of the Raikoke sulfate AOT. Plain Language Summary: In the summer of 2019, the Raikoke volcano erupted. (2021, https://doi.org/10.5194/acp‐21‐15783‐2021) showed, based on lidar observations at latitudes of 85°–86°N in the fall of 2019, that wildfire smoke dominated in the UTLS aerosol layer, at least up to 12 km height in the central Arctic. In this commentary, we show that the UTLS aerosol over the Arctic most probably consisted of both, smoke particles in the lower part and sulfate aerosol in the upper part of the layer extending from 7 to 19 km height. The smoke and sulfate particles contributed to the overall Arctic UTLS aerosol optical thickness by about 70%–80% and 20%–30%, respectively. The eruption of Hunga in January 2022 injected a large amount of water into the stratosphere. Satellite measurements from Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) show that this water vapor (H2O) has now spread throughout the stratosphere and into the lower mesosphere, resulting in an increase of >1 ppmv throughout most of this region. Measurements from three ground‐based Water Vapor Millimeter Wave Spectrometer (WVMS) instruments and MLS are in good agreement, and show that in 2023 there was more H2O in the lower mesosphere than at any time since the WVMS measurements began in the 1990's. At Table Mountain, California all WVMS H2O measurements at 54 km since June 2023, and all of the measurements from Mauna Loa, Hawaii, since the resumption of measurements in September 2023, show larger mixing ratios than any previous measurements. At 70 km several recent WVMS retrievals since September 2023 show the largest anomalies ever measured. The MLS measurements show that maximum H2O anomalies over the 2004–2023 record have occurred throughout almost all of the stratosphere and lower mesosphere since the eruption. As of November 2023, almost all of the ∼140 Tg of water originally injected into the stratosphere by the Hunga eruption remains in the middle atmosphere at pressures below 83 hPa (altitudes above ∼17 km). The eruption occurred during a period when stratospheric H2O was already slightly elevated above the 2004–2021 MLS average, and the November 2023 anomaly of ∼160 Tg represents ∼15% of the total mass of H2O in this region. Plain Language Summary: The eruption of the undersea Hunga volcano on 15 January 2022 injected large amounts of water vapor into the stratosphere, breaking all records for direct injection of water vapor (H2O) in the satellite era. The MLS measurements are confirmed at three sites by the ground‐based Water Vapor Millimeter Wave Spectrometer (WVMS) instruments, and all of these measurements show that there is more H2O in the lower mesosphere (altitudes of ∼50–65 km) than at any time since the WVMS measurements began in the 1990's. At 70 km several WVMS measurements in the last few months show the largest anomalies ever measured. As of November 2023, almost all of the ∼140 Teragrams (140 million metric tons) of water originally injected into the stratosphere by the Hunga eruption remains in the middle atmosphere at pressures below 83 hPa (altitudes above ∼17 km). Polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) form in polar regions, typically between 15 and 25 km above mean sea level, when the local temperature is sufficiently low. PSCs play an important role in the ozone chemistry and the dehydration and denitrification of the stratosphere. Lidars with a depolarization channel may be used to detect and classify different classes of PSCs. The main PSC classes are water ice, nitric acid trihydrate (NAT), and supercooled ternary solutions (STSs), the latter being liquid droplets consisting of water, nitric acid, and sulfuric acid. PSCs have been observed at the lidar observatory at Concordia Station from 2014 onward. The harsh environmental conditions at Concordia during winter render successful lidar operation difficult. To facilitate the operation of the observatory, several measures have been put in place to achieve an almost complete remote control of the system. PSC occurrence is strongly correlated with local temperatures and is affected by dynamics, as the PSC coverage during the observation season shows. PSC observations in 2021 are shown as an example of the capability and functionality of the lidar observatory. A comparison of the observations with the satellite-borne CALIOP (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization) lidar has been made to demonstrate the quality of the data and their representativeness for the Antarctic Plateau. Stratosphere-to-troposphere transport results in the stratospheric intrusion (SI) of O 3 into the free troposphere through the folding of the tropopause. However, the mechanism of SI that influences the atmospheric environment through the cross-layer transport of O 3 from the stratosphere and free troposphere to the atmospheric boundary layer has not been elucidated thoroughly. In this study, an SI event over the North China Plain (NCP; 33–40° N, 114–121° E) during 19–20 May 2019 was chosen to investigate the mechanism of the cross-layer transport of stratospheric O 3 and its impact on the near-surface O 3 based on multi-source reanalysis, observation data, and air quality modeling. The results revealed a mechanism of stratospheric O 3 intrusion into the atmospheric environment induced by an extratropical cyclone system. The SI with downward transport of stratospheric O 3 to the near-surface layer was driven by the extratropical cyclone system, with vertical coupling of the upper westerly trough, the middle of the northeast cold vortex (NECV), and the lower extratropical cyclone, in the troposphere. The deep trough in the westerly jet aroused the tropopause folding, and the lower-stratospheric O 3 penetrated the folded tropopause into the upper and middle troposphere; the westerly trough was cut off to form a typical cold vortex in the upper and middle troposphere. The compensating downdrafts of the NECV further pushed the downward transport of stratospheric O 3 in the free troposphere; the NECV activated an extratropical cyclone in the lower troposphere; and the vertical cyclonic circulation governed the stratospheric O 3 from the free troposphere across the boundary layer top, invading the near-surface atmosphere. In this SI event, the average contribution of stratospheric O 3 to near-surface O 3 was accounted for at 26.77 %. The proposed meteorological mechanism of the vertical transport of stratospheric O 3 into the near-surface atmosphere, driven by an extratropical cyclone system, could improve the understanding of the influence of stratospheric O 3 on the atmospheric environment, with implications for the coordinated control of atmospheric pollution. For the requirements of the multi-means observation and emergency monitoring of space objects, including space debris and near-earth asteroids, this paper analyzes the astronomical observation conditions in the stratosphere, which is the region of the earth's atmosphere between 18 km and 55 km of altitude. The results reveal that near space has a significantly superior sky background and observation environment than ground-based observation, with the values of transmittance in the visible band and near-infrared bands more than 0.91 and 0.988, respectively. The sky background radiance at 20 km is 2.5% of the ground in the visible band and near-infrared band, which is practical for daytime observation, and there is an advantage in the availability of observable hours without the influence of aerosols and turbulence, etc. Based on near-space aerostats, such as a high-altitude balloon, a new method of space object floating observation has been proposed, including the observation facilities and scheme. The simulation shows that it has an all-weather/all-day ability while adopting multi-band observation. Applying a telescope with 9.5 mag detective ability located on the aerostat, debris with the size of about 0.36 m can be observed at a 1000 km distance and phase angle of 100°, while the near-earth asteroid with the size of about 980 km can be observed at a 5 million km distance and phase angle of 40° during the daytime. The dependence of ozone content in the polar stratosphere upon different phases of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) of the zonal wind and the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) during winter was studied. The monthly (from November to January) mean residual meridional circulation (RMC) was calculated for four different combinations of the main phases of ENSO and QBO using MERRA2 reanalysis data. It has been demonstrated that the QBO phase manifests itself in different vertical distributions of ozone in the equatorial stratosphere, as well as in strengthening/weakening of the secondary meridional circulation in the tropics. The enhancement of the RMC from the tropical to the polar stratosphere is stronger at altitudes where ozone is higher in the tropics under El Niño conditions. The RMC modification and intensification are observed from ozone-depleted areas under La Niña conditions. A "cumulative" effect is observed by February under La Niña conditions and the easterly QBO, which is expressed in the lowest ozone content in the polar stratosphere. The numerical experiments carried out using the Middle and Upper Atmosphere Model (MUAM) confirmed tendencies in changes in the meridional transport detected from the reanalysis data for different combinations of QBO and ENSO. This paper presents the observational, remote sensing, and model simulation used to analyze southern Brazil Antarctic ozone hole influence (SBAOHI) events that occurred between 2005 and 2014. To analyze it, we use total ozone column (TOC) data provided by a Brewer spectrophotometer (BS) and the OMI (Ozone Monitoring Instrument). In addition to the AURA/MLS (Microwave Limb Sounder) instrument, satellite ozone profiles were utilized with DYBAL (Dynamical Barrier Localization) code in the MIMOSA (Modélisation Isentrope du Transport Mésoéchelle de l'Ozone Stratosphérique par Advection) model Potential Vorticity (PV) fields. TOC has 7.0 ± 2.9 DU reductions average in 62 events. October has more events (30.7%). Polar tongue events are 19.3% in total, being more frequently observed in October (50% of cases), with medium intensity (58.2%), and in the stratosphere medium levels (55.0%). The mid-infrared lightweight tunable diode laser hygrometer, "Pico-Light H 2 O", the successor to Pico-SDLA H 2 O, is presented and its performances are evaluated during the AsA 2022 balloon-borne intercomparison campaign conducted at the CNES Aire-sur-l'Adour (AsA, 43.70° N; 0.25° W) balloon launch facility and the Aeroclub d'Aire-sur-l'Adour in France. The Pico-Light instrument has primarily been developed for sounding of the upper troposphere and stratosphere, although during the AsA 2022 campaign we expand the range of comparison to include additionally the lower troposphere. Three different types of hygrometer and two models of radiosonde were flown, operated by the French Space Agency (CNES) and the NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML) scientific teams: Pico-Light H 2 O, the NOAA Frost Point Hygrometer (FPH), the micro-hygrometer (in an early phase of development), and M20 and iMet-4 sondes. Within this framework, we intend to validate measurements of Pico-Light H 2 O through a first intercomparison with the NOAA FPH instrument. The in situ monitoring of water vapour in the upper troposphere–lower stratosphere continues to be very challenging from an instrumental point of view because of the very small amounts of water vapour to be measured in these regions of the atmosphere. Between the lapse rate tropopause (11–12.3 km) and 20 km, the mean relative difference between water vapour mixing ratio measurements by Pico-Light H 2 O and NOAA FPH was 4.2 % ± 7.7 %, and the mean tropospheric difference was 3.84 % ± 23.64 %, with differences depending on the altitude range considered. In the troposphere, relative humidity (RH) over water comparisons led to agreement between Pico-Light and NOAA FPH of - 0.2 % on average, with excursions of about 30 % RH due to moisture variability. Expanding the comparison to meteorological sondes, the iMet-4 sondes agree well with both Pico-Light and FPH between the ground and 7.5 km (within ± 3 % RH), as do the M20 sondes, up to 13 km, which are wet-biased by 3 % RH and dry-biased by 20 % in cases of saturation. The global space industry is growing rapidly, with an increasing number of annual rocket launches. Gases and particulates are emitted by rockets directly into the middle and upper atmosphere, where the protective ozone layer resides. These emissions have been shown to damage ozone – highlighting the need for proper management of the upper atmosphere environment. We summarise the emission byproducts from rocket launches and discuss their involvement in chemical and radiative processes in the stratosphere, along with potential implications for the ozone layer due to an anticipated increase in rocket launch emissions in the future. We then present a potential vision for sustainable launches, including tractable pathways for both the aerospace industry and the ozone research community. We canvass international and domestic environmental regulation to consider how existing frameworks might be applied to rocket launches. Stratospheric ozone is an important constituent of the atmosphere. Significant changes in its concentrations have great consequences for the environment in general and for ecosystems in particular. Here, we analyse ground-based, ozonesonde and satellite ozone measurements to examine the ozone depletion and the spatiotemporal trends in ozone in the tropics during the past 5 decades (1980–2020). The amount of column ozone in the tropics is relatively small (250–270 DU) compared to high and mid-latitudes (Northern Hemisphere (NH) 275–425 DU; Southern Hemisphere (SH) 275–350 DU). In addition, the tropical total ozone trend is very small (± 0–0.2 DU yr -1), as estimated for the period 1998–2022. No observational evidence is found regarding the indications or signatures of severe stratospheric ozone depletion in the tropics in contrast to a recent claim. Finally, current understanding and observational evidence do not provide any support for the possibility of an ozone hole occurring outside Antarctica today with respect to the present-day stratospheric halogen levels. The stratosphere has previously been shown to be a significant source of subseasonal tropospheric predictability. The ability of ensemble prediction systems to appropriately exploit this depends on their ability to reproduce the statistical properties of the real atmosphere. In this study, we investigate predictability properties of the coupled stratosphere‐troposphere system in the sub‐seasonal to seasonal prediction project hindcasts by fitting a simple, minimal model. We diagnose the signal and noise components of each system in the stratosphere and troposphere and their coupling. We find that while the correlation skill scores are similar in most systems, the signal to noise properties can be substantially different. In the stratosphere, some systems are significantly overconfident, with a quantifiable impact on the tropospheric confidence. We link the method and details of the design of a prediction system to these predictive properties. Plain Language Summary: Subseasonal weather prediction systems make use of ensemble forecasting approaches, in which each forecast is made up of a number of complimentary predictions (ensemble members), that produce more skillful predictions by averaging and allows forecasters to anticipate the uncertainty in any particular forecast. There is a "battle" between the useful signal, hidden in the initial conditions of a simulation run, against the noise that chaotically builds up over the run from inaccuracies in the representation of the initial conditions. The Arctic is estimated to have warmed up to four times faster than the rest of the globe since the 1980s. There is significant interest in understanding the mechanisms by which such warming may impact weather and climate at lower latitudes. One such mechanism is the "stratospheric pathway"; Arctic warming is proposed to induce a wave‐driven weakening of the stratospheric polar vortex, which may subsequently impact large‐scale tropospheric circulation. However, recent comprehensive model studies have found systematic differences in both the magnitude and sign of the stratospheric response to Arctic warming. Using a series of idealized model simulations, we show that this response is sensitive to characteristics of the warming and mean polar vortex strength. In all simulations, imposed polar warming amplifies upward wave propagation from the troposphere, consistent with comprehensive models. However, as polar warming strength and depth increases, the region through which waves can propagate is narrowed, inducing wave breaking and deceleration of the flow in the lower stratosphere. Thus, the mid‐stratosphere is less affected, with reduced sudden stratospheric warming frequency for stronger and deeper warming compared to weaker and shallower warming. We also find that the sign of the stratospheric response depends on the mean strength of the vortex, and that the stratospheric response in turn plays a role in the magnitude of the tropospheric jet response. Our results help explain the spread across multimodel ensembles of comprehensive climate models. As it increases in strength and vertical extent, upward‐moving waves are confined and forced to break lower down, resulting in fewer disruptions of the vortex above. We also find that the state of the vortex influences whether it weakens or strengthens, with implications for near‐surface winds. Overshooting tops (OTs) are manifestations of deep convective updrafts that extend above the tropopause into the stratosphere. They can induce dynamic perturbations and result in irreversible transport of aerosols, water vapor and other mass from the troposphere into the stratosphere, thereby impacting the chemical composition and radiative processes of the stratosphere. These and other effects of OTs depend on their characteristics such as depth and area, which are understood to connect to mid‐tropospheric updraft speed and width, respectively. Less understood is how static stability in the lower stratosphere (LS) potentially modulates these OT–updraft connections, thus motivating the current study. Here, LS static stability and observed OT characteristics are quantified and compared using a combination of reanalysis data, observed rawinsonde data and geostationary satellite data. A weak to moderate relationship between OT depth and LS lapse rate and Brunt‐Väisälä frequency (N2) (R = 0.38, −0.37, respectively) is found, implying that OT depth is reduced with an increasingly stable LS. In contrast, a weak relationship (R = −0.03, 0.03, respectively) is found between OT area and LS static stability, implying that OT area is controlled primarily by mid to upper tropospheric updraft area. OT duration has a weak relationship to LS lapse rate and N2 (R = 0.02, −0.02, respectively). These relationships may be useful in interpreting mid‐ and low‐level storm dynamics from satellite‐observed characteristics of OTs in near real‐time. Diabatic transport schemes with hybrid zeta coordinates, which follow isentropes in the stratosphere, are known to greatly improve Lagrangian transport calculations compared to the kinematic approach. However, some Lagrangian transport calculations with a diabatic approach, such as the Chemical Lagrangian Transport Model of the Stratosphere (CLaMS), are not well prepared to run on modern high-performance computing (HPC) architectures. Here, we implemented and evaluated a new diabatic transport scheme in the Massive-Parallel Trajectory Calculations (MPTRAC) model. While MPTRAC can be used either with shared-memory multiprocessing on CPUs or with GPUs to offload computationally intensive calculations, making it flexible for many HPC applications, it has been limited to kinematic trajectories in pressure coordinates. The extended modelling approach now enables the use of either kinematic or diabatic vertical velocities and the coupling of different MPTRAC modules based on pressure or hybrid zeta coordinates. This study focus on the accuracy of the implementation in comparison to the CLaMS model. The evaluation of the new transport scheme in MPTRAC shows that, after 90 d of forward calculations, distributions of air parcels in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) are almost identical for MPTRAC and CLaMS. No significant bias between the two Lagrangian models was found. Furthermore, after 1 d, internal uncertainties (e.g. due to interpolation or the numerical integration method) in the Lagrangian transport calculations are at least 1 order of magnitude smaller than external uncertainties (e.g. from reanalysis selection or downsampling of ERA5). Differences between trajectories using either CLaMS or MPTRAC are on the order of the combined internal uncertainties within MPTRAC. Since the largest systematic differences are caused by the reanalysis and the vertical velocity (diabatic vs. kinematic), the results support the development efforts for trajectory codes that can access the full resolution of ERA5 in combination with diabatic vertical velocities. Polar stratospheric clouds play a significant role in the seasonal thinning of the ozone layer by facilitating the activation of stable chlorine and bromine reservoirs into reactive radicals, as well as prolonging the ozone depletion by removing HNO 3 and H 2 O from the stratosphere by sedimentation. In a context of climate change, the cooling of the lower polar stratosphere could enhance polar stratospheric cloud (PSC) formation and by consequence cause more ozone depletion. There is thus a need to document the evolution of the PSC cover to better understand its impact on the ozone layer. In this article we present a statistical model based on the analysis of the CALIPSO (Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations) PSC product from 2006 to 2020. The model predicts the daily regionally averaged PSC density by pressure level derived from stratospheric temperatures. Applied to stratospheric temperatures from the CALIPSO PSC product, our model reproduces observed and interannual variations in PSC density well between 10 and 150 hPa over the 2006–2020 period. The model reproduces the PSC seasonal progression well, even during disruptive events like stratospheric sudden warmings, except for years characterized by volcanic eruptions. We also apply our model to gridded temperatures from Modern Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Application (MERRA-2) reanalyses over the complete South Pole region to evaluate changes in PSC season duration over the 1980–2021 period. We find that over the 1980–2000 period, the PSC season gets significantly longer between 30 and 150 hPa. Lengthening of the PSC season from 22 d (30–50 hPa) to 32 d (100–150 hPa) is possibly related to volcanic eruptions occurring over this period. Over 1980–2021, we find that the PSC season gets significantly longer between 30 and 100 hPa, but due to biases in MERRA-2 temperatures, the reliability of these trends is hard to evaluate. Carbonyl sulfide (COS), a trace gas in our atmosphere that leads to the formation of aerosols in the stratosphere, is largely taken up by terrestrial ecosystems. Quantifying the biosphere uptake of COS could provide a useful quantity to estimate gross primary productivity (GPP). Some COS sources and sinks still contain large uncertainties, and several top-down estimates of the COS budget point to an underestimation of sources, especially in the tropics. We extended the inverse model TM5-4DVAR to assimilate Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) satellite data, in addition to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) surface data as used in a previous study. To resolve possible discrepancies among the two observational data sets, a bias correction scheme is necessary and implemented. A set of inversions is presented that explores the influence of the different measurement streams and the settings of the prior fluxes. To evaluate the performance of the inverse system, the HIAPER Pole-to-Pole Observations (HIPPO) aircraft observations and NOAA airborne profiles are used. All inversions reduce the COS biosphere uptake from a prior value of 1053 GgS a -1 to much smaller values, depending on the inversion settings. These large adjustments of the biosphere uptake often turn parts of Amazonia into a COS source. Only inversions that exclusively use MIPAS observations, or strongly reduce the prior errors on the biosphere flux, maintain the Amazon as a COS sink. Inclusion of MIPAS data in the inversion leads to a better separation of land and ocean fluxes. Over the Amazon, these inversions reduce the biosphere uptake from roughly 300 to 100 GgS a -1 , indicating a strongly overestimated prior uptake in this region. Although a recent study also reported reduced COS uptake over the Amazon, we emphasise that a careful construction of prior fluxes and their associated errors remains important. For instance, an inversion that gives large freedom to adjust the anthropogenic and ocean fluxes of CS2 , an important COS precursor, also closes the budget satisfactorily with much smaller adjustments to the biosphere. We achieved better characterisation of biosphere prior and uncertainty, better characterisation of combined ocean and land fluxes, and better constraint of both by combining surface and satellite observations. Tropical tropopause layer (TTL) clouds have a significant impact on the Earth's radiative budget and regulate the amount of water vapor entering the stratosphere. Estimating the total coverage of tropical cirrus clouds is challenging, since the range of their optical depth spans several orders of magnitude, from thick opaque cirrus detrained from convection to sub-visible clouds just below the stratosphere. During the Strateole-2 observation campaign, three microlidars were flown on board stratospheric superpressure balloons from October 2021 to late January 2022, slowly drifting only a few kilometers above the TTL. These measurements have unprecedented sensitivity to thin cirrus and provide a fine-scale description of cloudy structures both in time and in space. Case studies of collocated observations with the spaceborne Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) show very good agreement between the instruments and highlight the Balloon-borne Cirrus and convective overshOOt Lidar's (BeCOOL) higher detection sensitivity. Indeed, the microlidar is able to detect optically very thin clouds (optical depth τ<2×10-3) that are undetected by CALIOP. Statistics on cloud occurrence show that TTL cirrus appear in about 50 % of the microlidar profiles and have a mean geometrical depth of 1 km. Ultrathin TTL cirrus (τ<2×10-3) have a significant coverage (23 % of the profiles), and their mean geometrical depth is 0.5 km. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The application of starlight refraction navigation to spacecraft and space weapons is a significant development. However, the irregular stratospheric atmosphere can cause fluctuations in relative light intensity and refraction angles of refracted stars, which need to be analyzed to provide guidance for system design and simulation verification. The internal gravity wave (IGW) is an important component of the irregular atmosphere. Based on the Rytov approximation, closed-form approximations were obtained, which can more intuitively reveal the relationship between the IGW parameters and the star signals' statistical characteristics. From the GOMOS observations, the influence of the stratosphere from 25 km to 35 km on the fluctuations in relative intensity and refraction angles was analyzed in this study. As the height increased, the fluctuations in starlight signals gradually weakened. Compared with the numerical solution, the error of the closed-form approximations for relative intensity fluctuations was no more than 10%, and the error for refraction angle fluctuations was 1.0%. Compared with the measured data, the error of the closed-form approximations for relative intensity was 6.3%. Based on hourly ERA5 reanalysis and station rainfall data of China, this study investigated the mesoscale anomalous atmospheric circulation linked with heavy rainfall events around Yaan China. Yaan located in steep terrain on the eastern foot of Tibetan Plateau and is in the trumpet corner region of western Sichuan Basin of China. Yaan areas serve as a regional heavy rainfall center. Analysis revealed that the principal atmospheric circulation features, which underpin heavy rainfall, is probably a mesoscale (within 500 km) anomalous circulation system characterized by anomalous upper tropospheric warming (around 300–500 hPa) and lower stratospheric cooling (around 100 hPa) above Yaan, which against large-scale upper tropospheric backgrounds either warm or cold over East China. The anomalous temperature pattern corresponds to a positive (negative) geopotential height anomaly and mesoscale divergence (convergence) at 150–200 hPa (800–925 Pa). The anomalous low-level easterly winds blowing towards the steep terrain, together with the upper-level divergence, favor the occurrence of heavy rainfall around Yaan. The formation of the mesoscale upper-level warm anomaly over Yaan under a large-scale cold background could be contributed by the interaction between the stratosphere and troposphere, the transport of warm air mass from the northern Tibetan Plateau in the upper troposphere and also the match of middle-lower tropospheric warm anomalies jointly. The representation of the Arctic stratospheric circulation and the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) during the period 1981–2019 in a 40-yr Chinese global reanalysis dataset (CRA-40) is evaluated by comparing two widely used reanalysis datasets, ERA-5 and MERRA-2. CRA-40 demonstrates a comparable performance with ERA-5 and MERRA-2 in characterizing the winter and spring circulation in the lower and middle Arctic stratosphere. Specifically, differences in the climatological polar-mean temperature and polar night jet among the three reanalyses are within ±0.5 K and ±0.5 m s−1, respectively. The onset dates of the stratospheric sudden warming and stratospheric final warming events at 10 hPa in CRA-40, together with the dynamics and circulation anomalies during the onset process of warming events, are nearly identical to the other two reanalyses with slight differences. By contrast, the CRA-40 dataset demonstrates a deteriorated performance in describing the QBO below 10 hPa compared to the other two reanalysis products, manifested by the larger easterly biases of the QBO index, the remarkably weaker amplitude of the QBO, and the weaker wavelet power of the QBO period. Such pronounced biases are mainly concentrated in the period 1981–98 and largely reduced by at least 39% in 1999–2019. Thus, particular caution is needed in studying the QBO based on CRA-40. All three reanalyses exhibit greater disagreement in the upper stratosphere compared to the lower and middle stratosphere for both the polar region and the tropics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the study of atmospheric wind fields from the upper troposphere to the stratosphere (10 km to 50 km), direct detection wind LiDAR is considered a promising method that offers high-precision atmospheric wind field data. In 2020, Xie et al. of the Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, developed an innovative rotating Rayleigh Doppler wind LiDAR (RRDWL). The system aims to achieve single-LiDAR detection of atmospheric wind fields by rotating the entire device cabin. In 2022, the feasibility of the system was successfully validated in laboratory conditions, and field deployment was completed. Due to the structural differences between this system and traditional direct-detection wind LiDAR, performance tests were conducted to evaluate its continuous detection capability in outdoor environments. Subsequently, based on the test results and error analysis, further analysis was carried out to identify the main factors affecting the system's detection performance. Finally, the error analysis and traceability of the detection results were conducted, and corresponding measures were discussed to provide a theoretical foundation for optimizing the performance of RRDWL. An enhanced aerosol layer, known as the Asian Tropopause Aerosol Layer (ATAL), has been observed within the seasonal Asian monsoon anticyclone (AMA) since the late 1990s. Given the apparently abrupt appearance of this layer based on observations, it has been speculated that it originates from increasing human made emissions in Asia. However, the ATAL confinement is a result of a dynamical feature and does not purely consist of human made components. We herein investigate the possible existence of an ATAL earlier than the late 1990s. We exploit earliest possible, high quality space‐based aerosol observations from Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment, or SAGE (1979–1981), SAGE III/ISS (2017, ongoing) and revisit SAGE II (1984–2005) data analysis. We find that seasonal averaged solar occultation aerosol measurements (past and present) can neither be used to exclude the existence of the ATAL, nor to infer a significant trend. However, first CAM5‐MAM7 simulations indicate the presence of an ATAL signal for the tested years 1979 and 1980, with a human made component. We hypothesize that the human made component of the ATAL likely occurred since at least the 1970s, while the natural ATAL component (e.g., from dust) has always existed. Extended simulation based ATAL evolution studies are therefore the most reliable source for early ATAL investigations. Future space missions dedicated to measuring CO2 on a global scale can make advantageous use of the O2 band at 1.27 μm to retrieve the air column. The 1.27 μm band is close to the CO2 absorption bands at 1.6 and 2.0 μm, which allows a better transfer of the aerosol properties than with the usual O2 band at 0.76 μm. However, the 1.27 μm band is polluted by the spontaneous dayglow of the excited state O2 (1∆), which must be removed from the observed signal. We investigate here our quantitative understanding of the O2(1∆) dayglow with a chemistry‐transport model. We show that the previously reported −13% deficit in O2(1∆) dayglow calculated with the same model is essentially due a −20% to −30% ozone deficit between 45 and 60 km. We find that this ozone deficit is due to excessively high temperatures (+15 K) of the meteorological analyses used to drive the model in the mesosphere. The use of lower analyzed temperatures (ERA5), in better agreement with the observations, slows down the hydrogen‐catalyzed and Chapman ozone loss cycles. This effect leads to an almost total elimination of the ozone and O2(1∆) deficits in the lower mesosphere. Once integrated vertically to simulate a nadir measurement, the deficit in modeled O2(1∆) brightness is reduced to −4.2 ± 2.8%. This illustrates the need for accurate mesospheric temperatures for a priori estimations of the O2(1∆) brightness in algorithms using the 1.27 μm band. This article discusses the observation of vertical coupling during a major sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event in 2020/2021. The study focuses on the response of the thermospheric winds and temperature to the SSW using observations from NASA's ICON and GOLD satellites. The results show significant changes in winds and temperature during the SSW, with enhanced northward and westward winds in the thermosphere and a drop in temperature around 150 km. These changes are likely caused by the SSW-induced changes in atmospheric wave propagation and dissipation conditions.
