Abstract

The PAMELA apparatus has been assembled and it is ready to be launched in a satellite mission to study mainly the antiparticle component of cosmic rays. In this paper the performances obtained for the silicon microstrip detectors used in the magnetic spectrometer are presented. This subdetector reconstructs the curvature of a charged particle in the magnetic field produced by a permanent magnet and consequently determines momentum and charge sign, thanks to a very good accuracy in the position measurements (better than 3 um in the bending coordinate). A complete simulation of the silicon microstrip detectors has been developed in order to investigate in great detail the sensor's characteristics. Simulated events have been then compared with data gathered from minimum ionizing particle (MIP) beams during the last years in order to tune free parameters of the simulation. Finally some either widely used or original position finding algorithms, designed for such kind of detectors, have been applied to events with different incidence angles. As a result of the analysis, a method of impact point reconstruction can be chosen, depending on both the particle's incidence angle and the cluster multiplicity, so as to maximize the capability of the spectrometer in antiparticle tagging., Comment: 28 pages, 18 figures, submitted to Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research A

Abstract

This article reports nine Solar Energetic Particle events detected by the instrument NINA between October 1998 and April 1999. NINA is a silicon-based particle detector mounted on-board the Russian satellite Resurs-01-N4, which has flown at an altitude of about 800 km in polar inclination since July 1998. For every solar event the power-law He4 spectrum across the energy interval 10--50 MeV/n was reconstructed, and spectral indexes, gamma, from 1.8 to 6.8 extracted. Data of He3 and He4 were used to determine the He3/He4 ratio, that for some SEP events indicated an enrichment in He3. For the 1998 November 7 event the ratio reached a maximum value of 0.33+- 0.06, with spectral indexes of gamma = 2.5 +- 0.6 and gamma = 3.7 +- 0.3 for He3 and He4, respectively. The He3/He4 ratio averaged over the remaining events was 0.011 +- 0.004. For all events the deuterium-to-proton ratio was determined. The average value over all events was (3.9+-1.4) 10^{-5} across the energy interval 9--12 MeV/n. For one event (1998 November 24) this ratio yielded approximately 10 times higher than normal coronal values. Upper limits on the H3/H1 counting ratio for all events were determined. 4. A Measurement of the Force between Two Current-Carrying Wires

Abstract

The measurement of the force acting between two parallel, current-carrying wires is known as Ampère's experiment. A mechanical balance was historically employed to measure that force. We report a simple experiment based on an electronic precision balance that is useful in clearly showing students the existence of this interaction and how to measure it. The ampere (A) is one of the fundamental quantities of the international system of units, defined only on the basis of the force acting between a pair of parallel wires through which current is flowing.

5. A Simple Radio Receiver Aids Understanding of Wireless Communication

Abstract

The basic theory of radio broadcasting is discussed from an experimental point of view. First, concepts like wave modulation and tuning are explained with the use of instruments in the physics laboratory. Then, a very basic radio receiver is described and assembled, whose most important feature, like in the old "crystal radios", is the absence of a power supply. Even if the underlying general concepts are usually described in general physics classes at high school and university, for students this setup is a practical example of the application of electromagnetic waves. 6. A Simple Frictionless Device for the Study of Motion

Abstract

The air-cushion table is a powerful instrument to demonstrate the motion of an object in the absence of friction. Such devices are often rather large and do not fit very easily in the classroom. In a different version of this experience, gas comes directly out of the disc itself, which is provided, for example, by a tank of dry ice that slowly sublimates. This second kind of device is more suitable for use outside the laboratory. On the basis of examples found on the internet, and with the aim of further simplifying usage, we produced a disc which exploits the air contained in a rubber balloon to reduce the sliding friction. We describe its features to enable teachers to reproduce it and analyse data extracted from pictures taken with a digital camera. (Contains 6 figures and 5 footnotes.)

8. An Educational Kohlrausch Ammeter

Abstract

The Kohlrausch ammeter is based on the measurement of the force acting between a solenoid and a soft iron rod inserted inside it. In this article, we present a new version of the instrument for educational purposes: in our device the dynamometer, which is usually employed to measure the force, is replaced by an electronic balance. The operation of the instrument is satisfactory: the precision is better than 1%. Furthermore, the measurements can be useful to improve students' knowledge of magnetism and magnetic materials. Two methods for measuring the Earth's magnetic field are described. In the former, according to Gauss, the Earth's magnetic field is compared with that of a permanent magnet; in the latter, a well-known method, the comparison is made with the magnetic field generated by a current. As all the used instruments are available off the shelf, both methods are cheap. With some attention to the procedure, both methods give accurate results. Abstract

PAMELA is a satellite-borne experiment that will study the antiproton and positron fluxes in cosmic rays in a wide range of energy (from 80 MeV up to 190 GeV for antiprotons and from 50 MeV up to 270 GeV for positrons) and with high statistics, and that will measure the antihelium/helium ratio with a sensitivity of the order of [10.sup.-8]. The detector will fly on-board a polar orbiting Resurs DK1 satellite, which will be launched into space by a Soyuz rocket in 2004 from Balkonur eosmodrome in Kazakhstan, for a 3-year-long mission. Particle identification and energy measurements are performed in the PAMELA apparatus using the following subdetectors: a magnetic spectrometer made up of a permanent magnet equipped with double-sided microstrip silicon detectors, an electromagnetic imaging calorimeter composed of layers of tungsten absorber and silicon detectors planes, a transition radiation detector made of straw tubes interleaved with carbon fiber radiators, a plastic scintillator time-of-flight and trigger system, a set of anticounter plastic scintillator detectors, and a neutron detector. The features of the detectors and the main results obtained in beam test sessions are presented. Index Terms--Antimatter, cosmic rays, satellite experiment.

Abstract

In this paper we report on the energy spectrum of protons of albedo origin measured by the instruments NINA and NINA-2 at different geomagnetic locations, and the behaviour of the proton flux as a function of altitude out of the South Atlantic Anomaly. The instrument NINA was used on board the satellite Resurs-01-N4 between 1998 and 1999, at an altitude of about 830 km. The NINA-2 apparatus, on board the satellite MITA, was put into orbit in July 2000, at an altitude of about 450 km. A detailed understanding of the fluxes of charged particles in near Earth orbit is important to reach an accurate theoretical description of the Earth’s magnetic field, but also as input for the calculation of the back-ground for scientific instruments aboard satellites, like the future AGILE and GLAST g astronomy telescopes.Key words. 27. A Simple 'Tubeless' Telescope

Abstract

Two lenses make it possible to create a simple telescope with quite large magnification. The set-up is very simple and can be reproduced in schools, provided the laboratory has a range of lenses with different focal lengths. In this article, the authors adopt the Keplerian configuration, which is composed of two converging lenses. This instrument, like astronomical telescopes, produces upside-down images. An advantage of this spyglass is the great stability of the image, which is not always obtainable with small conventional instruments. Moreover, thanks to its simplicity, it can be useful in teaching the basic principles of optics and the operation of more complex telescopes. (Contains 4 figures and 1 table.)

Abstract

The NINA apparatus, on board the satellite Resurs-01 n.4, has been orbiting the Earth since July 10th, 1998, in polar revolution at 1 AU. Its scientific goal is the study of the galactic, solar and anomalous components of the cosmic rays in the range 10–200 MeV/n. After a description of the instrument, results of GCR fluxes measurements and of particle identification in orbit are presented.

Abstract

Results of calibration of the PAMELA instrument at the CERN facilities are discussed. In September, 2003, the calibration of the Neutron Detector together with the Calorimeter was performed with the CERN beams of electrons and protons with energies of 20-180 GeV. The implementation of the Neutron Detector increases a rejection factor of hadrons from electrons about ten times. The results of calibration are in agreement with calculations., QC 20120228

Abstract

PAMELA is a satellite-borne experiment that will study the antiproton and positron fluxes in cosmic rays in a wide range of energy (from 80 MeV up to 190 GeV for antiprotons and from 50 MeV up to 270 GeV for positrons) and with high statistics, and that will measure the antihelium/helium ratio with a sensitivity of the order of 10(-8). The detector will fly on-board a polar orbiting Resurs DK1 satellite, which will be launched into space by a Soyuz rocket in 2004 from Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, for a 3-year-long mission. Particle identification and energy measurements are performed in the PAMELA apparatus using the following subdetectors: a magnetic spectrometer made up of a permanent magnet equipped with double-sided microstrip silicon detectors, an electromagnetic imaging calorimeter composed of layers of tungsten absorber and silicon detectors planes, a transition radiation detector made of straw tubes interleaved with carbon fiber radiators, a plastic scintillator time-of-flight and trigger system, a set of anticounter plastic scintillator detectors, and a neutron detector. Abstract

In this paper we report on the energy spectrum of protons of albedo origin measured by the instruments NINA and NINA-2 at different geomagnetic locations, and the behaviour of the proton flux as a function of altitude out of the South Atlantic Anomaly. The instrument NINA was used on board the satellite Resurs-01-N4 between 1998 and 1999, at an altitude of about 830 km. The NINA-2 apparatus, on board the satellite MITA, was put into orbit in July 2000, at an altitude of about 450 km. A detailed understanding of the fluxes of charged particles in near Earth orbit is important to reach an accurate theoretical description of the Earth’s magnetic field, but also as input for the calculation of the back-ground for scientific instruments aboard satellites, like the future AGILE and GLAST g astronomy telescopes.Key words. Abstract

The Italian PLS-“Piano Lauree Scientifiche” project has among its objectives the improvement of school-university cooperation, with a special emphasis on in-service teacher professional development. In pursuit of such goal, growing resources and an increasing effort to strengthen the collaboration with schools have been employed in the past years. A working group within the physics section of the PLS project has developed a questionnaire to inquire about teacher formation activities organized during the past five years. After extensive revision and testing, the university network of PLS-Physics was asked to fill the questionnaire. The resulting data from 139 initiatives provides an interesting perspective on the kind of activities, organizational choices and educational priorities for teacher professional development within the PLS-physics project.
