THE MECHANICS OF SOCIAL MEDIA [...], Despite their well-known negative aspects, social media and streaming services have become integral for consumers' daily entertainment and social connection. Although most users have some idea of these services' harmful mental impacts, they are typically unaware of the carbon emissions that result from them. This dissonance is not an accident, but rather the direct result of incomplete data and the omission of individual user-level estimates for carbon emissions in private governance reports published by social media and streaming companies. Where these governance reports do include user-level figures, they are not provided in a meaningful way such that users could consequentially alter their behavior to minimize that harm. Though the impact of individual usage may initially seem minimal on a micro-level, minor changes in individual carbon contributions may have substantially positive impacts where numerous consumers implement them on a macro-level; these services benefit from billions of users, thus, seemingly small behavioral changes that reduce usage time can result in notable emissions reductions in the aggregate. While regulatory actions may retroactively address these consequences, stronger solutions reside in the private spehere through actions like reducing reliance on addictive algorithms, offering paid subscriptions that eliminate or decrease advertisements, and bolstering information disclosure to users through these companies' internal governance reports. While most adults in the United States are in agreement that environmental concerns are an important national focus, disagreement remains over adequate responses, and many environmentally harmful industries are still economically essential. As a result, attention must be afforded to these widespread energy uses for entertainment sectors and their resulting emissions.

This article examines Barack and Michelle Obama's entertainment company, Higher Ground Productions. Founded in 2018, Higher Ground has produced and distributed several films, television programs, and podcasts for Its exclusive streaming partners, Netflix, Spotify, and Audible. Drawing on media-industry analysis, scholarship on representation and politics in streaming media, and cultural studies of mass culture and entertainment, I argue that these streaming companies leverage the Obamas' reputation as popular tastemakers and the pair's diverse coalition of supporters as part of the broader project of building a mass audience. This coalitional audience is based on drawing different demographic groups toward the platform, smoothing over political and identity differences by curating explicitly diverse yet agreeably centristliberal (and thus not partisan or radical) programming, and offering up the Obamas as moguls and curators who enable their host platforms to present themselves as services open to all viewing and listening constituencies. Macroinvertebrates are good indicators of stream quality. Changes in populations of sensitive macroinvertebrates help to show stressors to the stream. Student sampling of a section of Dug Run in northwestern Ohio has occurred since 2015. This work has been to identify how changes on the campus including construction, tree removal, and channelization may be impacting stream macroinvertebrates. Student sampling, however, also causes disturbances that may negatively impact macroinvertebrate populations. A break in student sampling--due first to the use of an adjacent off-site location in 2019 and then to COVID-19 beginning in 2020--was expected to impact the number of mayfly nymphs and caddisfly larvae captured, both considered sensitive macroinvertebrates in the stream. To measure the impact of channelization in Dug Run, the study area was split into a channelized reach, an upstream reach, and a downstream reach. Stream habitat was also studied in each reach with macroinvertebrates collected from riffles, undercuts, and pools. After a break in sampling, caddisfly larvae increased initially but have declined in the 2 following years, while mayfly nymphs increased in the last 2 years of the study. No significant differences were found in stream quality monitoring (SQM) index scores between the channelized reach compared to upstream and downstream reaches (H = 4.15; p = 0.126). There was a significant difference in taxa richness among pools, riffles, and undercuts (H = 14.09; p< 0.001). A significant difference was also found in the moderately sensitive macroinvertebratescaptured in riffles between thechannelized, upstream, and downstream reaches (H = 6.82; p = 0.033). A break in sampling resulted in an initial increase in mayfly nymph and caddisfly larvae samples, but it appears a variety of factors may be responsible for the numbers captured. The channelized reach had higher numbers of scuds and crayfish in riffles among the 3 reaches, which may be the result of a change in their distribution related to lack of undercuts.
