Social environments impose a number of constraints on individuals' behavior. These constraints have been hypothesized to generate behavioral variation among individuals, social responsiveness, and within-individual behavioral consistency (also termed "predictability"). In particular, the social niche specialization hypothesis posits that higher levels of competition associated with higher population density should increase among-individual behavioral variation and individual predictability as a way to reduce conflicts. Being predictable should hence have fitness benefits in group-living animals. However, to date empirical studies of the fitness consequences of behavioral predictability remain scarce. In this study, we investigated the associations between social behavior, its predictability, and fitness in the eastern water dragon (Intellagama lesueurii), a wild gregarious lizard. Since this species is sexually dimorphic, we examined these patterns both between sexes and among individuals. Although females were more sociable than males, there was no evidence for sex differences in among-individual variation or predictability. However, females exhibited positive associations between social behavior, its predictability, and survival, while males exhibited only a positive association between mean social behavior and fitness. These findings hence partly support predictions from the social niche specialization hypothesis and suggest that the function of social predictability may be sex dependent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) not only cause catastrophic declines in wildlife populations but also generate selective pressures that may result in rapid evolutionary responses. One such EID is devil facial tumour disease (DFTD) in the Tasmanian devil. DFTD is almost always fatal and has reduced the average lifespan of individuals by around 2 years, likely causing strong selection for traits that reduce susceptibility to the disease, but population decline has also left Tasmanian devils vulnerable to inbreeding depression. We analysed 22 years of data from an ongoing study of a population of Tasmanian devils on Freycinet Peninsula, Tasmania, to (1) identify whether DFTD may be causing selection on body size, by estimating phenotypic and genetic correlations between DFTD and size traits, (2) estimate the additive genetic variance of susceptibility to DFTD, and (3) investigate whether size traits or susceptibility to DFTD were under inbreeding depression. We found a positive phenotypic relationship between head width and susceptibility to DFTD, but this was not underpinned by a genetic correlation. Conversely, we found a negative phenotypic relationship between body weight and susceptibility to DFTD, and there was evidence for a negative genetic correlation between susceptibility to DFTD and body weight. There was additive genetic variance in susceptibility to DFTD, head width and body weight, but there was no evidence for inbreeding depression in any of these traits. These results suggest that Tasmanian devils have the potential to respond adaptively to DFTD, although the realised evolutionary response will critically further depend on the evolution of DFTD itself. A central goal in evolutionary biology is to understand how different evolutionary processes cause trait change in wild populations. However, quantifying evolutionary change in the wild requires linking trait change to shifts in allele frequencies at causal loci. Nevertheless, datasets that allow for such tests are extremely rare and existing theoretical approaches poorly account for the evolutionary dynamics that likely occur in ecological settings. Using a decade-long integrative phenome-to-genome time-series dataset on wild threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), we identified how different modes of selection (directional, episodic, and balancing) drive microevolutionary change in correlated traits over time. Most strikingly, we show that feeding traits changed by as much 25% across 10 generations which was driven by changes in the genetic architecture (i.e., in both genomic breeding values and allele frequencies at genetic loci for feeding traits). Importantly, allele frequencies at genetic loci related to feeding traits changed at a rate greater than expected under drift, suggesting that the observed change was a result of directional selection. Allele frequency dynamics of loci related to swimming traits appeared to be under fluctuating selection evident in periodic population crashes in this system. Our results show that microevolutionary change in a wild population is characterized by different modes of selection acting simultaneously on different traits, which likely has important consequences for the evolution of correlated traits. Effective conservation requires accurate data on population genetic diversity, inbreeding, and genetic structure. Increasingly, scientists are adopting genetic non‐invasive sampling (gNIS) as a cost‐effective population‐wide genetic monitoring approach. gNIS has, however, known limitations which may impact the accuracy of downstream genetic analyses. Here, using high‐quality single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data from blood/tissue sampling of a free‐ranging koala population (n = 430), we investigated how the reduced SNP panel size and call rate typical of genetic non‐invasive samples (derived from experimental and field trials) impacts the accuracy of genetic measures, and also the effect of sampling intensity on these measures. We found that gNIS at small sample sizes (14% of population) can provide accurate population diversity measures, but slightly underestimated population inbreeding coefficients. Accurate measures of internal relatedness required at least 33% of the population to be sampled. Accurate geographic and genetic spatial autocorrelation analysis requires between 28% and 51% of the population to be sampled. We show that gNIS at low sample sizes can provide a powerful tool to aid conservation decision‐making and provide recommendations for researchers looking to apply these techniques to free‐ranging systems. Urban environments present some of the greatest challenges to species survival. This is particularly true for species that exhibit thermally sensitive traits, such as temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD). This is because urban environments not only present species with entirely novel ecosystems, but species will also experience increased temperatures. These temperature increases may result not only in offspring mortality, but also skewed population sex ratios. To persist in cities, urban dwellers with TSD will therefore need to adjust the temperature of the nesting environment, either through phenotypic plasticity or rapid evolution through natural selection. Here, we investigate the nesting ecology of a long-lived, urban dwelling reptile, the eastern water dragon (Intellagama lesueurii) , to understand how a TSD species may respond to urban environments. Based on data collected from 72 nests over 2 nesting seasons, we show that city dragons not only dug significantly deeper nests than previously observed across their natural riparian habitat, but also nested in novel substrates. Furthermore, we observed a behaviour not previously described in this species, where mothers travel outside of their core home range to nest. This excursion behaviour potentially represents a greater maternal investment and is linked to the selection of specific microhabitats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports on the first evidence of cannibalism observed in eastern water dragon Intellagama lesueurii in the urban city park of the Roma Street Parkland in Brisbane, Queensland. Topics include the incident of cannibalistic behavior due to food competition, the observation of cannibalism of hatchlings during the genetic and longitudinal study at RSP, and the possible effect of population density to food competition.

Shifts in life history traits, such as timing of reproduction, can help mediate population declines following perturbations, and early reproduction should be favoured when adult survival is impacted more than juvenile survival. In Tasmanian devils, following the emergence of a fatal transmissible cancer, females started to breed precocially (i.e., at age one instead of typically age two) and the same time as populations started to decline following disease emergence. Here, we focus on a diseased site (Freycinet Peninsula, Tasmania, Australia) with 18 years of continuous mark-recapture data to test: (1) whether rates of precocial breeding in females continued to increase after the initial rise after the emergence of the disease, (2) whether there was a relationship between body size and breeding success for either one-year-olds or adult females (i.e., at least two-years-old), and (3) whether there was inbreeding depression in breeding success for either age category. We show that rates of precocial breeding did not continue to rise, and that the proportion of precocially breeding females has plateaued at around 50%. We also show that there was no effect of body size on the probability of breeding for either one-year-old or for adult females. Finally, we show that there was no evidence for inbreeding depression in breeding success for either age class. We discuss possible constraints that may have inhibited further rise in rates of precocial breeding in the context of limitations to growth in the offspring of precocially breeding (and therefore smaller) females.
