Heat recovery from an enhanced geothermal system (EGS) is a complex process involving heat transport in both fracture networks and rock formations. A comprehensive understanding of and the ability to model the underlying heat transport mechanisms is important for the success of EGS commercialization but remains challenging in practice due to the generally insufficient characterization of EGS reservoirs. In the present study, we analyze an extensively monitored intermediate-scale EGS field experiment performed in a well-characterized testbed. The high-resolution, high-quality measurements from the field experiment enable the development of a high-fidelity model incorporating a well-constrained fracture network. Based on the field experiment, we investigate the complex heat transport processes in an EGS-relevant environment and validate the capability of a numerical approach in simulating these inherently coupled heat transport processes. A series of numerical simulations were performed to study the effects of different heat transport mechanisms, including thermal convection with fracture flow, thermal conduction in rock formations, and the Joule-Thomson effect. The agreement of thermal responses between field measurements and simulation results indicates that our numerical approach can appropriately model the heat transport processes pertaining to heat recovery from EGS reservoirs.

We investigate the influence of foliation orientation and fine-scale folding on the static and dynamic elastic properties and unconfined strength of the Poorman schist. Measurements from triaxial and uniaxial laboratory experiments reveal a significant amount of variability in the static and dynamic Young’s modulus depending on the sample orientation relative to the foliation plane. Dynamic P-wave modulus and S-wave modulus are stiffer in the direction parallel to the foliation plane as expected for transversely isotropic mediums with average Thomsen parameters values 0.133 and 0.119 for epsilon and gamma, respectively. Static Young’s modulus varies significantly between 21 and 117 GPa, and a peculiar trend is observed where some foliated sample groups show an anomalous decrease in the static Young’s modulus when the symmetry axis (x3-axis) is oriented obliquely to the direction of loading. Utilizing stress and strain relationships for transversely isotropic medium, we derive the analytical expression for Young’s modulus as a function of the elastic moduli E1, E3, ν31, and G13 and sample orientation to fit the static Young’s modulus measurements. Regression of the equation to the Young’s modulus data reveals that the decrease in static Young’s modulus at oblique symmetry axis orientations is directly influenced by a low shear modulus, G13, which we attribute to shear sliding along foliation planes during static deformation that occurs as soon as the foliation is subject to shear stress. We argue that such difference between dynamic and static anisotropy is a characteristic of near-zero porosity anisotropic rocks. The uniaxial compressive strength also shows significant variability ranging from 21.9 to 194.6 MPa across the five sample locations and is the lowest when the symmetry axis is oriented 45° or 60° from the direction of loading, also a result of shear sliding along foliation planes during static deformation.

The EGS (Enhanced Geothermal Systems) Collab project is performing stimulation and flow experiments in highly-monitored and well-characterized intermediate-scale (approximately10 to 20 meter) field test beds at a depth of approximately 1,500 meters in the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Our fracture stimulation and interwell flow tests are performed to better understand processes that control formation of effective subsurface heat exchangers that are critical to the development and success of EGS. Different EGS Collab stimulations will be performed under dissimilar stress conditions to produce data for model comparisons that better differentiate stimulation mechanisms and the evolution of permeability enhancement in crystalline rock. EGS Collab experiments provide a means of testing tools, concepts, and strategies that could later be employed under geothermal reservoir conditions at DOE’s Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE) and other enhanced geothermal systems. Relative permeability is an important attribute influencing subsurface multiphase flow. Characterization of relative permeability is necessary to support activities such as carbon sequestration, geothermal energy production, and oil and gas exploration. Previous research efforts have largely neglected the relative permeability of wellbore cement used to seal well bores where risks of leak are significant. Therefore this study was performed to evaluate fracturing on permeability and relative permeability of wellbore cement. Studies of relative permeability of water and air were conducted using ordinary Portland cement paste cylinders having fracture networks that exhibited a range of permeability values. The measured relative permeability was compared with three models, 1) Corey-curve, often used for modeling relative permeability in porous media, 2) X-curve, commonly used to represent relative permeability of fractures, and 3) Burdine model based on fitting the Brooks-Corey function to fracture saturation-pressure data inferred from x-ray computed tomography (XCT) derived aperture distribution results. Experimentally-determined aqueous relative permeability was best described by the Burdine model. Though water phase tended to follow the Corey-curve for the simple fracture system while air relative permeability was best described by the X-curve., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Surface barrier technology is used to isolate radioactive waste and to reduce or eliminate recharge water to the waste zone for 1000 years or longer. However, the design and evaluation of such a barrier is challenging because of the extremely long design life. After establishing a set of design and performance objectives, a package of design solutions was developed for 1000-year surface barriers over nuclear waste sites. The Prototype Hanford Barrier (PHB) was then constructed in 1994 in the field over an existing waste site as a demonstration. The barrier was tested to evaluate surface-barrier design and performance at the field scale under conditions of enhanced and natural precipitation and of no vegetation. The monitoring data demonstrate that the barrier satisfied nearly all objectives in the past two decades. The PHB far exceeded the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act criteria, functioned in Hanford's semiarid climate, limited drainage to well below the 0.5 mm yr -1 performance criterion, limited runoff, and minimized erosion and bio-intrusion. Given the two-decade record of successful performance and consideration of the processes and mechanisms that could affect barrier stability and hydrology in the future, the results suggest the PHB is very likely to perform for its 1000-year design life. This conclusion is based on two assumptions: (1) the exposed subgrade receives protection against erosion and (2) institutional controls prevent inadvertent human activity at the barrier. For sites with a contaminant source located in the vadose zone, the nature and extent of groundwater contaminant plumes are a function of the contaminant flux from the vadose zone to groundwater. Especially for thick vadose zones, transport may be relatively slow making it difficult to directly measure contaminant flux. An integrated assessment approach, supported by site characterization and monitoring data, is presented to explain current vadose zone contaminant distributions and to estimate future contaminant flux to groundwater in support of remediation decisions. The U.S. Department of Energy Hanford Site (WA, USA) SX Tank Farm was used as a case study because of a large existing contaminant inventory in its deep vadose zone, the presence of a limited-extent groundwater plume, and the relatively large amount of available data for the site. A predictive quantitative analysis was applied to refine a baseline conceptual model through the completion of a series of targeted simulations. The analysis revealed that site recharge is the most important flux-controlling process for future contaminant flux. Tank leak characteristics and subsurface heterogeneities appear to have a limited effect on long-term contaminant flux into groundwater. The occurrence of the current technetium-99 groundwater plume was explained by taking into account a considerable historical water-line leak adjacent to one of the tanks. The analysis further indicates that the vast majority of technetium-99 is expected to migrate into the groundwater during the next century. The approach provides a template for use in evaluating contaminant flux to groundwater using existing site data and has elements that are relevant to other disposal sites with a thick vadose zone., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. The objective of this study was to quantify transport of Eu colloids in the vadose zone at the semiarid Hanford site. Eu-hydroxy-carbonate colloids, Eu(OH)(CO3), were applied to the surface of field lysimeters, and migration of the colloids through the sediments was monitored using wick samplers. The lysimeters were exposed to natural precipitation (145-231 mm/year) or artificial irrigation (124-348 mm/year). Wick outflow was analyzed for Eu concentrations, supplemented by electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Small amounts of Eu colloids (<1%) were detected in the deepest wick sampler (2.14 m depth) 2.5 months after application and cumulative precipitation of only 20 mm. We observed rapid transport of Eu colloids under both natural precipitation and artificial irrigation; that is, the leading edge of the Eu colloids moved at a velocity of 3 cm/day within the first 2 months after application. Episodic infiltration (e.g., Chinook snowmelt events) caused peaks of Eu in the wick outflow. While a fraction of Eu moved consistent with long-term recharge estimates at the site, the main mass of Eu remained in the top 30 cm of the sediments. This study illustrates that, under field conditions, near-surface colloid mobilization and transport occurred in Hanford sediments.

Evidence suggests that stimuli that have the property of inhibiting fear in a Pavlovian fear conditioning paradigm increase cellular activity in the lateral septum, a result consistent with the idea that the lateral septum is actively involved in the inhibition of fear. The experiments reported here were designed to determine if an anxiolytic drug with fear-inhibiting properties would also increase neuronal activity in the lateral septum in a manner that might relate to its mechanism of action as an anxiolytic. An experiment was performed to compare the effects of the benzodiazepine anxiolytic chlordiazepoxide (CDP) upon single-unit activity in the septal region of the rat brain during Pavlovian aversive conditioning with the effects of CDP in a non-aversive context. During Pavlovian conditioning there was a decrease in unit activity in the more lateral regions of the septum, the dorsolateral and ventrolateral nuclei, when a stimulus signaling footshock (CS+) was presented. This conditioned suppression of unit activity was blocked by an intraperitoneal injection of CDP. Additionally, CDP increased baseline unit activity in these regions in the absence of conditioned stimuli. In the more medial regions of the septum, the intermediate lateral septum, we observed few consistent changes either to the conditioned stimuli or to the drug. In a non-aversive context CDP had either no effect at low to moderate doses, or a suppressant effect at a higher dose. The results support a fear-relief hypothesis of lateral septal functioning and suggest the lateral septum as a possible site for the anxiolytic action of benzodiazepines.

Behavior of rats in the water-lick conflict test was examined during stimulation, and after lesions of the lateral septal nucleus. Continuous low-current stimulation resulted in an anxiolytic effect, an increase in the number of licks, and hence in the number of shocks, during a signaled, punished period. This effect is similar to the one seen with peripheral administration of benzodiazepine and other anxiolytic agents. Rewarding medial forebrain stimulation did not have this effect. Conversely, septal lesions resulted in an anxiogenic effect, a significant decrease in the number of licks during the punished period. Lesions had this effect when the conflict behavior was already well established. Septal lesions performed before acquisition of the conflict behavior resulted in initial retardation of acquisition. The results suggest an important role for the lateral septum in the inhibition of anxiety and in the acquisition of behaviors reinforced by alleviation of anxiety.

Single unit activity was recorded from the lateral and medial septum of rats during aversive Pavlovian differential conditioning. One conditioned stimulus (CS+) was consistently paired with and another (CS-) was explicitly unpaired with a brief shock unconditioned stimulus (US). In the lateral septum single unit activity generally increased in the presence of a conditioned inhibitor of fear (CS-), while unit activity generally decreased in the presence of a conditioned excitor of fear (CS+). Responses in the medial septum were more heterogeneous. Many cells did not show plastic changes to the CSs, others showed responses to the conditioned stimuli opposite to that seen in the lateral septum. A small group of cells showed responses similar to that seen in the lateral septum. Finally, theta bursting cells were seen in the medial septum with some evidence of increased theta activity in the presence of a conditioned inhibitor of fear (CS-). The results were interpreted as consistent with the proposition that the lateral septum mediates the inhibition of aversive emotional states. The medial septum may have some involvement with the activation of fear or anxiety.

The role of the amygdala in the anxiolytic action of benzodiazepines was examined. Performance on a water-licking conflict paradigm was tested in rats with localized damage to the central nucleus of the amygdala (ACE) or with general damage to the entire amygdaloid complex. The effects of the benzodiazepine chlordiazepoxide (2.5-20.0 mg/kg) on conflict behavior in these animals was also examined. Electrolytic lesions of either ACE or of the entire amygdaloid complex resulted in a pronounced increase of punished responding, an effect that persisted for at least 12 sessions postoperatively. After shock levels were adjusted in the lesioned groups to match their baseline punished behavior to that of the controls, various doses of chlordiazepoxide were administered. Not only did the lesioned animals show an increase in punished behavior in response to the drug, they were more sensitive than controls to the lower drug doses. A complete model of anxiolytic action may have to include both mechanisms that block anxiogenic regions and those that activate anxiolytic regions.
