In recent years, the United States has seen an increase in gun-related violence and school shootings. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the incidence of gun carrying among high-school students has declined. Nevertheless, an examination of the underlying factors that increase the risk of violence-related behaviors is necessary to develop interventions to decrease gun use among high-school students. General Strain Theory (GST) predicts that victims of violence are (a) significantly more likely to engage in violent behaviors and (b) the increased risk of violent behavior by persons who experience violence is significantly greater among male victims. This research aims to test these predictions of the strain theory with data from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). To that end, it investigates whether the relationship between forced sexual intercourse victimization (FSIV) and gun or weapon carrying or physical fighting is significantly greater among male students. Using R and pooled data from the nationally representative YRBS (2017 and 2019), additive interactions were estimated according to Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines to determine the association between FSIV and weapon carry, gun carry, or physical fighting. Multiplicative interactions and odds ratios were also estimated for comparison. Results show a high risk of gun and weapon carrying and physical fighting among both male and female students who experience FSIV and a significant relationship between FSIV and increased risk of these violence-related behaviors. Additive interactions show that the relationship between FSIV and these violent behaviors is significantly greater among male students than female students. Results confirm the predictions of GST and show that FSIV significantly increases the risk of gun carrying and other violence-related behaviors among male and female U.S. high-school students; the increased risk is significantly greater among male students. Traditional bullying and cyberbullying are common problems faced by today's youth. Research seeking to explain bullying perpetration has often invoked Agnew's general strain theory (GST). However, research to date has often explored within a given study only a single emotion at a time that can result from strain. Further, prior research has tended to take the causal ordering arguments of GST at face value. The current study seeks to focus on the correlation of strains related to socioeconomics with traditional and cyberbullying perpetration and negative emotions. Utilizing the Add Health data and path modeling in Mplus, results suggest that socioeconomic strain positively correlates with bullying perpetration and recent negative emotions. However, results suggest a potential causal chain that is the opposite of an expectation of GST, with bullying perpetration potentially affecting negative emotions, and not the other way around. Often, human trafficking is only thought of as sex trafficking, and many perceive it as a new term for prostitution; yet, human trafficking includes much more. Police understanding of human trafficking is especially important as police are first responders and serve as gatekeepers to service access for victims or punishment for offenders. Thus, how police define human trafficking and whether they recognize it in their area is an important area of inquiry. Surveying 495 police officers serving at a large agency in the northeastern USA, this study explored police conceptualizations of human trafficking, finding that most officers define human trafficking as sex trafficking. Further, logistic regression analyses show that myths surrounding human trafficking (especially that human trafficking is prostitution) affect officers' perceptions of whether human trafficking is a problem in their area. Additionally, officer characteristics, such as training, tenure, type of area served, and experience with human trafficking cases, affect officers' perceptions of human trafficking. Bullying victimization among adolescents is associated with increased illicit substance use. This research estimates whether the association between bullying victimization and substance use is significantly greater among female adolescents. Using R software and the national Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2011, 2013, 2014, and 2017), interactions were estimated to determine the association between self-reported school or electronic bullying victimization and previous 30-day alcohol use, binge drinking, marijuana use, cigarette smoking, and electronic vaping product use. Bullying victimization was significantly associated with each of the substance use variables, Effects were significantly greater in female students. Efforts should be put in place in schools and communities to reduce bullying, mitigate the harmful effects of this form of victimization, and reduce illicit substance use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bullying victimization can have serious consequences for adolescents. This article examines the association between traditional and cyberbullying victimization, depressive symptoms, and suicidality in a national school-based sample, utilizing general strain theory (GST) as a guide to how these variables might relate to each other. We additionally examine whether the associations between these variables differ by gender. Results suggest that traditional and cyberbullying victimization have significant, positive associations with both depressive symptoms and suicidality. Results are partly supportive of the full model suggested by GST, with the associations between bullying and suicidality being weakened in some models when accounting for depressive symptoms. Research suggests that minority children with one mental health condition are more likely than White children to have a secondary mental health condition. However, there are no current studies that test the interaction between race and family resources to examine this apparent racial difference in mental health conditions in children. Yet research suggests that family resources vary by race/ethnicity. This study examines the interaction between family structure and socioeconomic status by race and ethnicity to understand how it predicts the number of mental health conditions among children. Our findings are consistent with the existing literature that children in resource-poor families (single parent, step-parent families, and lower income families) have higher counts of mental health conditions. Yet we also found that children in resource-rich families (two-parent biological families with higher levels of income) in some cases also had higher counts of mental health conditions and this varied by race/ethnicity.
