Abstract

Deep neural networks are utilized in a growing number of industries. Much of the current literature focuses on the applications of deep neural networks without discussing the security of the network itself. One security issue facing deep neural networks is neural trojans. Through a neural trojan, a malicious actor may force the deep neural network to act in unintended ways. Several potential defenses have been proposed, but they are computationally expensive, complex, or unusable in commercial applications. We propose Merkle trees as a novel way to detect and isolate neural trojans.

Abstract

Pediatric neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase-rearranged spindle cell neoplasms are soft tissue neoplasms whose behaviors are not well understood. We provide a case presentation of such a tumor sharing features of a vascular malformation. Our patient is an 11-year-old female referred for a lesion clinically and radiologically concerning for a vascular tumor or malformation. Upon excision, next-generation sequencing revealed a laminA-neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase 1 fusion. Neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase-rearranged spindle cell neoplasms represent an emerging entity in children now being diagnosed with a variety of techniques including immunohistochemistry, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and next-generation sequencing. Consideration for this tumor should be in the differential diagnosis of vascular skin lesions with unusual features on physical examination.

Abstract

Abstract The two p53 homologues p63 and p73 regulate transcriptional programs in epithelial tissues and several cell types in these tissues express both proteins. All members of the p53 family form tetramers in their active state through a dedicated oligomerization domain that structurally assembles as a dimer of dimers. The oligomerization domain of p63 and p73 share a high sequence identity, but the p53 oligomerization domain is more divergent and it lacks a functionally important C-terminal helix present in the other two family members. Based on these structural differences, p53 does not hetero-oligomerize with p63 or p73. In contrast, p63 and p73 form hetero-oligomers of all possible stoichiometries, with the hetero-tetramer built from a p63 dimer and a p73 dimer being thermodynamically more stable than the two homo-tetramers. This predicts that in cells expressing both proteins a p632/p732 hetero-tetramer is formed. So far, the tools to investigate the biological function of this hetero-tetramer have been missing. Here we report the generation and characterization of Designed Ankyrin Repeat Proteins (DARPins) that bind with high affinity and selectivity to the p632/p732 hetero-tetramer. Using these DARPins we were able to confirm experimentally the existence of this hetero-tetramer in epithelial mouse and human tissues and show that its level increases in squamous cell carcinoma.

Abstract

We develop Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates for representations of surface groups into Sp(2n,R) with maximal Toledo invariant. Analogous to classical Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates on the Teichm\"uller space they consist of a parametrization of representations of the fundamental group of a pair of pants and a careful investigation of the gluing. As applications we obtain results for non-closed surfaces, which have been known only for closed surfaces before: we count the number of connected components of their representation space and prove continuity for the limit curve for a certain type of representations.

Abstract

We define a family of four-point invariants for Shilov boundaries of bounded symmetric domains of tube type, which generalizes the classical four-point cross ratio on the unit circle. This generalization, which is based on a similar construction of Clerc and {\O}rsted, is functorial and well-behaved under products; these two properties determine our extension uniquely. Our generalized cross ratios can be used to estimate translation lengths of a large class of isometries of the underlying bounded symmetric domain. Our main application concerns maximal representations of surface groups with Hermitian target. For any such representation we can construct a strict cross ratio on the circle in the sense of Labourie via pullback of our generalized cross ratio along a suitable limit curve. In this context our translation length estimates then imply that maximal representations with Hermitian target are well-displacing; this implies in particular that the action of the mapping class group on the moduli space of maximal representations into a Hermitian Lie group is proper., Comment: 50 pages, completely revised and extended version; earlier name "Cross ratios associated with maximal representations" extended to the present one
