31. The role of connective interventions in the collective management of public-bad problems: Evidence from a socio-ecological system perspective.

Abstract

Managing public-bad problems is difficult and arriving at an effective collective response can be an even bigger challenge. Using a socio-ecological systems framework, we explore the role of communication-focused interventions in the management of public bads in six African case-studies. We analyse case-specific livelihood units, public-bad risk conditions, and threats, and the strategies to prevent and control a public bad. We assess the impact of connective interventions on existing risk governance systems and problem management. Our findings show that connective interventions enable people to define risk boundaries, learn about the costs and benefits of public-bad management, and develop capacity for collective decision-making and problem monitoring. However, connective interventions cannot work in isolation and require complementary strategies, and trust in broader governance and institutional arrangements. Our research demonstrates the value of the social ecological systems framework in synthesizing lessons and insights from diverse interdisciplinary studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

44. Quantifying source–sink relationships in leaf-color modified rice genotypes during grain filling

Abstract

Leaf-color modification can affect canopy photosynthesis, with potential effects on rice yield and yield components. Modulating source–sink relationships through crop management is often used to improve crop productivity. This study investigated whether and how modifying leaf color alters source–sink relationships and whether current crop cultivation practices remain applicable for leaf-color modified genotypes. Periodically collected data of total biomass and nitrogen (N) accumulation in rice genotypes of four genetic backgrounds and their leaf-color modified variants (greener or yellower) were analyzed, using a recently established modelling method to quantify the source–sink (im)balance during grain filling. Among all leaf-color variants, only one yellower-leaf variant showed a higher source capacity than its normal genotype. This was associated with greater post-flowering N-uptake that prolonged the functional leaf-N duration, and this greater post-flowering N-uptake was possible because of reduced pre-flowering N-uptake. A density experiment showed that current management practices (insufficient planting density accompanied by abundant N application) are unsuitable for the yellower-leaf genotype, ultimately limiting its yield potential. Leaf-color modification affects source–sink relationships by regulating the N trade-off between pre-and post-flowering uptake, as well as N translocation between source and sink organs. To best exploit leaf-color modification for improving crop productivity, adjustments of crop management practices are required.

47. Agronomic consequences of growing field‐transplanted hybrid potato seedlings

Abstract

The introduction of hybrid breeding in potato (Solanum tuberosumL.) requires novel and efficient cropping systems for potato production based on true potato seed (TPS). Such systems address the limitations of conventional seed tuber–based systems, including low multiplication rates, high degeneration rates, and high costs of transport and storage. Of the possible cultivation pathways of TPS, we introduce and discuss the potential of field transplanting nursery‐raised potato seedlings as an alternative system for seed and ware production. This review discusses the current knowledge available on field transplanting of potato seedlings, the key factors that influence the success or failure of the system, and some of the prospective factors that will influence the wide introduction and utilization of field transplanting of potato seedlings in diverse farming systems. A field transplanting system will require the successful production of seedlings in the nursery, a successful establishment of transplanted seedlings in the field, and successful crop management to attain a productive seed or ware crop. The contribution of various factors in the various phases of the system to the success of the transplanted crop is also discussed. The introduction and utilization of the field transplanting system will be accelerated when hybrid breeding focuses on the introgression of traits of interest into high yielding cultivars and when agronomic studies focus on defining factors influencing productivity in distinct phases of the system. Hybrid true potato seeds from hybrid breeding provide cultivation pathways for seed and ware potato production.Field transplanting of potato seedlings is a novel, feasible, and resilient cropping system for potato production.Transplanting provides the fastest option to obtain the seed or ware of all true potato seed–based cropping systems.
