1. A Mobile Payment Scheme Using Biometric Identification with Mutual Authentication

Abstract

Cashless payment systems offer many benefits over cash, but also have some drawbacks. Fake terminals, skimming, wireless connectivity, and relay attacks are persistent problems. Attempts to overcome one problem often lead to another - for example, some systems use QR codes to avoid skimming and connexion issues, but QR codes can be stolen at distance and relayed. In this paper, we propose a novel mobile payment scheme based on biometric identification that provides mutual authentication to protect the user from rogue terminals. Our scheme imposes only minimal requirements on terminal hardware, does not depend on wireless connectivity between the user and the verifier during the authentication phase, and does not require the user to trust the terminal until it has authenticated itself to the user. We show that our scheme is resistant against phishing, replay, relay, and presentation attacks.

2. UserBoost: Generating User-specific Synthetic Data for Faster Enrolment into Behavioural Biometric Systems

Abstract

Behavioural biometric authentication systems entail an enrolment period that is burdensome for the user. In this work, we explore generating synthetic gestures from a few real user gestures with generative deep learning, with the application of training a simple (i.e. non-deep-learned) authentication model. Specifically, we show that utilising synthetic data alongside real data can reduce the number of real datapoints a user must provide to enrol into a biometric system. To validate our methods, we use the publicly available dataset of WatchAuth, a system proposed in 2022 for authenticating smartwatch payments using the physical gesture of reaching towards a payment terminal. We develop a regularised autoencoder model for generating synthetic user-specific wrist motion data representing these physical gestures, and demonstrate the diversity and fidelity of our synthetic gestures. We show that using synthetic gestures in training can improve classification ability for a real-world system. Through this technique we can reduce the number of gestures required to enrol a user into a WatchAuth-like system by more than 40% without negatively impacting its error rates.

Abstract

Abstract Background Despite high rates of adolescent mental-health problems, there are few effective whole-school interventions to address this. Whole-school interventions offer a feasible and sustainable means of promoting mental health. We previously evaluated the Learning Together (LT) intervention which was effective in preventing bullying (primary outcome), promoting mental well-being, psychological functioning, and reducing substance use (secondary outcomes). We adapted LT to develop Learning Together for Mental Health (LTMH) with a new menu of evidence-based actions to address mental health and an enhanced SEL curriculum. Methods We undertook a feasibility study of LTMH, a whole-school intervention featuring needs assessment, student and staff participation in decision-making via action groups selecting actions from an evidence-based menu, restorative practice, and a SEL and resilience skills curriculum between 2022 and 2023. This article examines the feasibility, acceptability, and potential mechanisms of LTMH, qualitatively, drawing on interviews and focus groups with 49 students in years 8 and 10, and 20 staff across four state secondary schools in southern England. Results The intervention was feasible and acceptable to implement. In terms of feasibility, the SEL curriculum was the most challenging to implement and was not prioritised by schools that had existing social and emotional learning lessons. Training and external facilitation were well-rated. Some schools struggled with the resourcing and workload implications of implementing actions from the evidence-based menu. Some aspects were not clear. Some staff were not aware that the various components worked together. Needs reports were not easy to understand for all. Students were generally supportive of restorative practice and SEL lessons. Data supported a potential mechanism involving increased school belonging and developing practical knowledge and skills to manage emotions and relationships. The intervention has little potential for harm. Conclusions The intervention is ready for phase III trial with minor adaptations. A phase III trial of effectiveness is justified. 4. Student-Reported Relationships and Sex Education Coverage and Knowledge among a Diverse Population of Early Adolescents: A Cross-Sectional Survey of Students in England

Abstract

Student-reported quality and coverage of school-based relationships and sex education (RSE) vary, with gender/sexual-minority and disadvantaged students reporting poorer provision. Experience of RSE among younger adolescents is under-explored. We examined student-reported RSE coverage and priorities and how coverage, and sexual-health knowledge and awareness of services, varies between students and schools. The data came from a pre-intervention survey of students aged 12-13 years within a trial of an RSE intervention involving 50 English schools. There was most coverage of basic information, such as puberty and safeguarding. There was least coverage of topics more appropriate for older students, such as sexual relationships, and topics teachers might find difficult to broach, e.g. pornography and masturbation. Girls, gay/lesbian students, students of bisexual/other sexual orientation, minority-ethnic students and students reporting lower academic commitment reported lower coverage than others. Knowledge of RSE-related topics and sexual-health services was generally low. Boys, students of bisexual/other orientation and students with higher school commitment had higher knowledge. Students of bisexual/other orientation and students of lower commitment reported lower awareness of services. Coverage and knowledge did not vary with school-level attainment or local deprivation. Future forms of RSE provision should ensure content and teaching methods meet the needs of all students.

6. RingAuth: Wearable Authentication using a Smart Ring

Abstract

In this paper, we show that by using inertial sensor data generated by a smart ring, worn on the finger, the user can be authenticated when making mobile payments or when knocking on a door (for access control). The proposed system can be deployed purely in software and does not require updates to existing payment terminals or infrastructure. We also demonstrate that smart ring data can authenticate smartwatch gestures, and vice versa, allowing either device to act as an implicit second factor for the other. To validate the system, we conduct a user study (n=21) to collect inertial sensor data from users as they perform gestures, and we evaluate the system against an active impersonation attacker. Abstract

This research proposes a new a numerical method to compute brain injury associated with concussion using the Peak Virtual Power method, using the THUMS 4.02 head model. The results indicate that mild and severe concussions could be prevented for lateral collisions and frontal impacts with PVP values lower than 0.928mW and 9.405mW, respectively, and no concussion would happen in the head vertical direction for a PVP value less than 1.184mW. Abstract

The first search for the lepton number violating decay K+→π0π−μ+e+ and lepton flavour violating decays K+→π0π+μ−e+, K+→π0π+μ+e− has been performed using a dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2016–2018. Upper limits of 2.9×10−10, 3.1×10−10 and 5.0×10−10, respectively, are obtained at 90% CL for the branching ratios of the three decays on the assumption of uniform phase-space distributions.

9. Implementation of COVID-19 Preventive Measures and Staff Well-Being in a Sample of English Schools 2020-2021

Abstract

Background: We examined fidelity and feasibility of implementation of COVID-19 preventive measures in schools, and explored associations between adherence to these measures and staff well-being, to inform policy on sustainable implementation and staff wellbeing. Methods: Surveys were conducted across 128 schools in England with 107 headteachers and 2698 staff-members with reference to autumn term 2020, examining school-level implementation of preventive measures, adherence, and teacher burnout (response rates for headteacher and staff surveys were 84% and 59%, respectively). Results: The median number of measures implemented in primary and secondary schools was 33 (range 23-41), and 32 (range 22-40), respectively; most measures presented challenges. No differences were found regarding number of measures implemented by school-level socio-economic disadvantage. High adherence was reported for staff wearing face-coverings, staff regularly washing their hands, (secondary only) desks facing forwards, and (primary only) increased cleaning of surfaces and student hand-washing. Adherence to most measures was reported as higher in primary than secondary schools. Over half of school leaders and 42% (517/1234) of other teaching staff suffered from high emotional exhaustion. Higher teacher-reported school-wide adherence with measures was consistently associated with lower burnout for leaders and other teaching staff. Conclusions: Findings indicate a tremendous effort in implementing preventive measures and an urgent need to support investments in improving teacher wellbeing.

10. WatchAuth: User Authentication and Intent Recognition in Mobile Payments using a Smartwatch

Abstract

In this paper, we show that the tap gesture, performed when a user 'taps' a smartwatch onto an NFC-enabled terminal to make a payment, is a biometric capable of implicitly authenticating the user and simultaneously recognising intent-to-pay. The proposed system can be deployed purely in software on the watch without requiring updates to payment terminals. It is agnostic to terminal type and position and the intent recognition portion does not require any training data from the user. To validate the system, we conduct a user study (n=16) to collect wrist motion data from users as they interact with payment terminals and to collect long-term data from a subset of them (n=9) as they perform daily activities. Based on this data, we identify optimum gesture parameters and develop authentication and intent recognition models, for which we achieve EERs of 0.08 and 0.04, respectively.

Abstract

2024 has started with a bang or perhaps more accurately floods, snow and ice. The world remains an uncertain place with the conflict in Ukraine and Gaza as well as tension around the Korean peninsula, Sea of Japan and Taiwan. Economically 2023 was a very hard year with inflation exceeding wage increases making it hard for animal carers, with food banks in the UK seeing an increasing demand for pet food. Thankfully inflation is falling and the economic outlook, although not rosy, is perhaps not as gloomy as originally forecast. The big stories in publishing for 2023 were the explosion of large language models (LLM) like ChatGPT and their impact on publishing (we now have a policy on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in papers submitted to Veterinary Evidence) and the burgeoning challenge of paper mills (organisations that produce and sell authorship of fabricated or manipulated manuscripts which resemble genuine legitimate research) that has led to some journals losing their citation. Veterinary Evidence continues to grow and flourish with increased visits to our website and a regular stream of articles being published. Good governance and ethical publication remain a key focus of the Board that has been strengthened by a number of new members, bringing a broader range of expertise and experience. Our Student Awards continue to be a success and I would like to thank the whole team of staff and reviewers for turning round these submissions so quickly. I had the pleasure of talking to the prize-winning authors and it was great to hear their enthusiasm, but also how much they have valued the help and support from the journal. Our new submission system, Editorial Manager, has been installed and is working well providing better insight into how the publishing process is working for us. It has been a learning experience for all and like any new system there are a few areas where we can further improve the author and reviewer experience. Thanks to the hard work of staff, reviewers and Associate Editors, there are now no papers left in the old OJS system. The journal has strived to make the reviewing process as straightforward as possible with a prereview checklist to ensure papers are ready for review. A mentoring system is up and running for new reviewers open to all who may be interested in contributing to the publication of veterinary literature. Veterinary Evidence has been working hard on our next review date policy and processes so some of our early Knowledge Summaries can be updated as new literature becomes available. We are also preparing to make an application for citation in PubMed Central to increase the visibility of Veterinary Evidence’s content. None of this would be possible without the input from our volunteers and I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all our reviewers, Associate Editors and everyone who has served on the Board this year for their tireless efforts on behalf of Veterinary Evidence without your support the journal could not exist. This year the Board has again had three online meetings, which have been essential in helping develop the strategy for Veterinary Evidence; such as our response to LLM, graphic content and further work on which types of evidence can be included in our Knowledge Summaries. On a personal note, my time as Editor-in-Chief is drawing to a close. It has been a great 3 years plus and I have had incredible support from everyone at Veterinary Evidence which has made my role so much easier and more enjoyable. 19. Airway management of adult epiglottitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract

Background: Adult epiglottitis is a life-threatening airway emergency where airway protection is the immediate priority. Despite its importance, the optimal approach to airway management remains unclear. We performed a systematic review of the airway management for adult epiglottitis, including meta-analysis of trends over time. Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE®, and Embase® for adult epiglottitis studies that described the airway management between 1980 and 2020. The primary outcome was the prevalence of airway intervention. Secondary outcomes were prevalence of tracheal intubation, tracheostomy, and failed intubation. A random-effects model meta-analysis was performed with subgroups defined by decade of study publication. Cases that described the specific method of airway intervention and severity of epiglottitis were included in a separate technique summary. Results: Fifty-six studies with 10 630 patients were included in the meta-analysis. The overall rate of airway intervention was 15.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 12.9–18.8%) but the rate decreased from 20% to 10% between 1980 and 2020. The overall rate of tracheal intubation was 10.2% (95% CI 7.1–13.6%) and that of failed intubation was 4.2% (95% CI 1.4–8.0%). The airway technique summary included 128 cases, of which 75 (58.6%) were performed awake and 53 (41.4%) involved general anaesthesia. We identified 32 cases of primary technique failure. Conclusion: The rate of airway intervention for adult epiglottitis has decreased over four decades to a current level of 10%. Tracheal intubation is a high-risk scenario with a 1 in 25 failure rate. Specific technique selection is most likely influenced by contextual factors including the severity of epiglottitis.

Abstract

A sample of 3984 candidates of the K+→π+γγ decay, with an estimated background of 291±14 events, was collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN during 2017–2018. In order to describe the observed di-photon mass spectrum, the next-to-leading order contribution in chiral perturbation theory was found to be necessary. The decay branching ratio in the full kinematic range is measured to be (9.61±0.17)×10−7. The first search for production and prompt decay of an axion-like particle with gluon coupling in the process K+→π+a, a→γγ is also reported.

Abstract

Abstract Measurement of the ultra-rare K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ decay at the NA62 experiment at CERN requires high-performance particle identification to distinguish muons from pions. Calorimetric identification currently in use, based on a boosted decision tree algorithm, achieves a muon misidentification probability of 1.2 × 10 −5 for a pion identification efficiency of 75% in the momentum range of 15–40 GeV/c. In this work, calorimetric identification performance is improved by developing an algorithm based on a convolutional neural network classifier augmented by a filter. Muon misidentification probability is reduced by a factor of six with respect to the current value for a fixed pion-identification efficiency of 75%. Alternatively, pion identification efficiency is improved from 72% to 91% for a fixed muon misidentification probability of 10 −5.

Abstract

Abstract A sample of 1.3 × 105 K + → π 0 e + νγ candidates with less than 1% background was collected by the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS in 2017–2018. Branching fraction measurements are obtained at percent relative precision in three restricted kinematic regions, improving on existing results by a factor larger than two. An asymmetry, possibly related to T-violation, is investigated with no evidence observed within the achieved precision.

Abstract

If evolution can be connected to the principle of least action, and if it is depicted in evolution space versus time then it corresponds to the direction of ultimate causation. As an organism evolves and follows a path of proximate causation, if the vector is closely parallel to that of the ultimate causation then the changes will confer desirable attributes which will lead to further development. If however the variations do not occur in a direction close to the of the ultimate causation vector the evolved organism will quickly die out. This may be viewed as similar to Feynmans sum over all histories. Therefore, the principle of least action gives a direction, but not a purpose, to evolution. Taking the coevolution model of Lewontin, an equation of motion for coevolution shows that it is the rate of evolutionary change that responds to changes in the environment, in line with some evidence. Abstract

Abstract Background Nurses play an essential role in patient safety. Inadequate nursing physical assessment and communication in handover practices are associated with increased patient deterioration, falls and pressure injuries. Despite internationally implemented rapid response systems, falls and pressure injury reduction strategies, and recommendations to conduct clinical handovers at patients’ bedside, adverse events persist. This trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness, implementation, and cost–benefit of an externally facilitated, nurse-led intervention delivered at the ward level for core physical assessment, structured patient-centred bedside handover and improved multidisciplinary communication. We hypothesise the trial will reduce medical emergency team calls, unplanned intensive care unit admissions, falls and pressure injuries. Methods A stepped-wedge cluster randomised trial will be conducted over 52 weeks. The intervention consists of a nursing core physical assessment, structured patient-centred bedside handover and improved multidisciplinary communication and will be implemented in 24 wards across eight hospitals. The intervention will use theoretically informed implementation strategies for changing clinician behaviour, consisting of: nursing executive site engagement; a train-the-trainer model for cascading facilitation; embedded site leads; nursing unit manager leadership training; nursing and medical ward-level clinical champions; ward nurses’ education workshops; intervention tailoring; and reminders. The primary outcome will be a composite measure of medical emergency team calls (rapid response calls and ‘Code Blue’ calls), unplanned intensive care unit admissions, in-hospital falls and hospital-acquired pressure injuries; these measures individually will also form secondary outcomes. Other secondary outcomes are: i) patient-reported experience measures of receiving safe and patient-centred care, ii) nurses’ perceptions of barriers to physical assessment, readiness to change, and staff engagement, and iii) nurses’ and medical officers’ perceptions of safety culture and interprofessional collaboration. Primary outcome data will be collected for the trial duration, and secondary outcome surveys will be collected prior to each step and at trial conclusion. A cost–benefit analysis and post-trial process evaluation will also be undertaken. Discussion If effective, this intervention has the potential to improve nursing care, reduce patient harm and improve patient outcomes. The evidence-based implementation strategy has been designed to be embedded within existing hospital workforces; if cost-effective, it will be readily translatable to other hospitals nationally. Abstract

Background and objectivesTransfusion-related immune modulation (TRIM) and associated adverse outcomes during major surgery are increasingly important to patients and health services internationally. A panel of pre-operative blood tests is an essential part of the pre-operative anaesthetic assessment. This panel of blood tests commonly considers numbers of immune cells (i.e., lymphocytes, monocytes, and neutrophils and cell ratios) that may be used as biomarkers to evaluate and potentially predict post-operative adverse outcomes.DesignThis retrospective data collection from eight hospital databases, within the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, considered only patients who received blood transfusion during surgery (2016–2018) (n = 2,121). The association between pre-operative immune cell numbers and ratios and adverse outcomes were assessed. Adverse outcomes were coded using the International Classification of Diseases-10 (ICD-10) coding which specifically considered transfusion-related immune modulation. Results were adjusted for confounding factors.ResultsAfter adjustment, decreased pre-operative lymphocyte numbers and increased neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were associated with increased odds of developing infection; decreased NLR with decreased odds of developing adverse renal outcomes; and decreased lymphocyte numbers with decreased odds of developing adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Monocyte numbers, neutrophil numbers, and the lymphocyte/monocyte ratio (LMR) were not associated with increased adverse outcomes after adjustment.ConclusionPre-operative lymphocyte numbers and NLR are associated with adverse outcomes during peri-operative transfusion. Future assessment of peri-operative immune modulation should include the assessment of immune cell function and numbers.

Abstract

BackgroundAtrial Fibrillation After Cardiac Surgery (AFACS) occurs in about one in three patients following Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG). It is associated with increased short- and long-term morbidity, mortality and costs. To reduce AFACS incidence, efforts are often made to maintain serum potassium in the high-normal range (≥ 4.5mEq/L). However, there is no evidence that this strategy is efficacious. Furthermore, the approach is costly, often unpleasant for patients, and risks causing harm. We describe the protocol of a planned randomized non-inferiority trial to investigate the impact of intervening to maintain serum potassium ≥ 3.6 mEq/L vs ≥ 4.5 mEq/L on incidence of new-onset AFACS after isolated elective CABG.MethodsPatients undergoing isolated CABG at sites in the UK and Germany will be recruited, randomized 1:1 and stratified by site to protocols maintaining serum potassium at either ≥ 3.6 mEq/L or ≥ 4.5 mEq/L. Participants will not be blind to treatment allocation. The primary endpoint is AFACS, defined as an episode of atrial fibrillation, flutter or tachycardia lasting ≥ 30 seconds until hour 120 after surgery, which is both clinically detected and electrocardiographically confirmed. Assuming a 35% incidence of AFACS in the 'tight control group', and allowing for a 10% loss to follow-up, 1684 participants are required to provide 90% certainty that the upper limit of a one-sided 97.5% confidence interval (CI) will exclude a > 10% difference in favour of tight potassium control. Secondary endpoints include mortality, use of hospital resources and incidence of dysrhythmias not meeting the primary endpoint (detected using continuous heart rhythm monitoring).DiscussionThe Tight K Trial will assess whether a protocol to maintain serum potassium ≥ 3.6 mEq/L is non inferior to maintaining serum potassium ≥ 4.5 mEq/L in preventing new-onset AFACS after isolated CABG.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04053816. 50. A Generic Trauma Severity Computer Method Applied to Pedestrian Collisions

Abstract

In the real world, the severity of traumatic injuries are measured using the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS). However the AIS scale cannot currently be computed by using finite element human computer models, which calculate a maximum principal strains (MPS). Further, MPS only establishes a threshold above which a serious or fatal injury occurs. In order to overcome these limitations, a unique Organ Trauma Model (OTM) able to calculate the threat to life of any organ injury is proposed. The focus, in this case is on real world pedestrian brain injuries. The OTM uses a power method, named Peak Virtual Power (PVP), and defines brain white and grey matters trauma responses as a function of impact location and impact speed extracted from the pedestrian collision kinematics. This research has included ageing in the injury severity computation by including soft tissue material degradation, as well as brain volume changes. Further, to account for the limitations of the Lagrangian formulation of the brain model in representing haemorrhage, an approach to include the effects of subdural hematoma is proposed and included as part of the OTM predictions in this study. The OTM model was tested against three real-life pedestrian accidents and has proven to reasonably predict the Post Mortem (PM) outcome. Its AIS predictions are closer to the real world injury severity than standard MPS methods currently recommended. This study suggests that the OTM has the potential to improve forensic predictions as well as contribute to the improvement in vehicle safety design through the ability to measure injury severity. This study concludes that future advances in trauma computing would require the development of a brain model which could predict haemorrhaging.
