Recent studies focused on the shear behaviour of clay-structure interfaces have shown the importance of the shearing rate on the strength of these interfaces. In normally-consolidated clays, increasing the shearing rate results in a decrease in the interface strength, while the trend is opposite in heavily overconsolidated clays. While analytical and empirical interpretation methods indicate that the generation of shear-induced excess pore pressures are responsible for theaforementioned trends, experiments with pore water pressure measurements at the clay-structure interface are rare. In this paper, we first describe a modified interface shear box testing setup that is equipped with a pore water pressure sensor. For this equipment, the fully rough structural surface was manufactured with a port at the centre of the clay-surface interface to measure the pore water pressure. We present the results of undrained clay-structure interface tests on normally consolidated (NC) and overconsolidated (OC) specimens of kaolin clay. The results agree with the expectations, where the NC specimens generate excess pore pressures with greater magnitudes and heavily OC specimens generate negative excess pore pressures. Measurements of the pore water pressures allow calculating vertical effective stresses, which can be used to investigate the effective stress paths followed by the clay-structure interface during the tests. This paper also provides a comparison of the measured values of beta and adhesion factors with previously published results and relationships used for the design of deep foundations.

This paper presents further improvements to the neohypoplasticity (NHP), a constitutive model for sand, which overcomes some shortcomings of widely used hypoplastic models. The novelties presented in this paper includes a new description of the additional dilatancy due to the structural variable z$\bm {z}$ and the introduction of a new state variable, denoted as hr$\bm {h}^r$, to consider the small strain stiffness in case of a 1D loading reversal. They remove shortcomings of earlier versions of NHP. The new formulations are presented and the performance of NHP is validated with experimental data from Karlsruhe fine sand. Both monotonic and cyclic tests are simulated under drained and undrained conditions. The results demonstrate that the NHP accurately reproduces the observed behaviour in monotonic and cyclic experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The increasing need for energy storage technology has led to a massive interest in novel energy storage methods. The energy geomembrane system is such a novel energy storage method. The concept of the system is briefly introduced, and a holistic numerical model of the system is presented. The model uses advanced finite-element techniques to model the energy storage system using fluid cavity elements. The developed geomembrane energy system is modelled with different constitutive models to represent the soil behaviour: a linear elastic model, a nonlinear Mohr-Coulomb model, and a hypoplastic constitutive model. The consequences of these different models on the results are studied. Hereby, the focus is the first inflation and deflation cycle of the system.

The structural performance of many geotechnical systems (e.g. axially-loaded pile foundations), depends on the shearing resistance at the soil interface, which may govern the load bearing capacity of the foundation. Experimental investigations have shown that this interaction is mainly localised within a narrow shear band next to the structure. Under cyclic loading, a contraction of the soil at the interface may arise (net volume loss), possibly leading to a stress relaxation and thus to a reduction of the load bearing capacity (the so-called friction fatigue). Based on the constitutive similarities between soil continua and interfaces, we propose here the adaption of a Generalized Plasticity model for sandy soils for the numerical analysis of interface problems. In this contribution, the results of an experimental campaign for the parameter calibration of the constitutive model are presented. The tests have been conducted with a ring shear device involving different normal stresses, roughness of the steel plates as well as cyclic loading. The new modelling approach shows promising results and has the additional practical advantage that the interface zone and the soil continuum can both be described with the same constitutive model in general boundary value problems.

Typical soil-structure interfaces exhibit a response that is independent of loading direction due to the symmetry of the surfaces' profile. This study presents results from an experimental investigation on the response of sand specimens sheared against three types of surfaces bio-inspired from the skin along the underside of snakes. The results of shear box interface shear tests indicate that all three surfaces exhibit significant anisotropy in response in terms of mobilized shear resistances and corresponding volumetric changes. A discussion on the practical implications and potential benefits of implementation of the snake skin-inspired surfaces in engineering design is provided.

Translation abstract Investigations on the liquefaction resistance of an open‐cast lignite mine soil under loading by earthquake‐typical signalsFor the embankments of the planned opencast mining lakes in the Rhenish mining area, the proof of the stability under earthquake action must be provided. According to the guideline for the investigation of the stability of slopes in lignite opencast mines (RfS – Richtlinie für Standsicherheitsuntersuchungen [1]), the permanent slopes must be designed and constructed in such a way that a soil liquefaction is not to be expected. For the proof, in which actions and soil resistances are locally compared with each other, the irregular earthquake signal is converted into a regular signal with an equivalent number of cycles and constant amplitude. In this paper, this conversion is investigated for a typical earthquake signal of the Rhenish area, which was obtained from a dynamic finite element calculation. Triaxial tests with vertical cyclic loading and hollow cylinder triaxial tests with cyclic torsional loading are performed to investigate the liquefaction behaviour of an opencast mine soil under the influence of this earthquake signal. The results of these tests are compared with data from further tests with constant amplitude. It can be shown that the factor β for converting irregular to regular signals depends on the type of loading and the magnitude of the static shear or deviatoric stress. On the basis of the experiments, recommendations for the choice of β for the Rhenish mining area are given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
