X-ray fluorescence, grain-size and oxygen and carbon stable isotope measurements of a 33 m long piston core, recovered from the Pen Duick drift located at the foot of the prominent Pen Duick Escarpment (Atlantic Moroccan margin), are combined to decipher past oceanographic conditions. The data indicate that, similar to the northern Gulf of Cádiz, the Azores Front exerts a major control on the palaeoclimatology of the region. Contrasting to the northern Gulf of Cádiz, where Mediterranean Outflow Water is the main water mass at similar water depths, the palaeoceanography of the studied area is mostly influenced by the amount of Antarctic Intermediate Water advected from the south. The density contrast between the Antarctic Intermediate Water and the overlying North Atlantic Central Water determined the strength of the prevailing internal tides and corresponding high current speeds, which drastically impacted the sedimentary record. The most notable impact is the presence of a 7.8 kyr condensed section (30.5-22.7 ka BP). The formation of the Pen Duick sediment drift was not just controlled by the strength of the bottom currents and the intensity of the internal tides, but also by the amount of (aeolian) sediment supplied to the region. Although variable, drift-growth phases seem to mainly occur during colder periods of the last glacial, i.e. Heinrich and Dansgaard-Oeschger events during the Marine Isotope Stage 3 and the late Marine Isotope Stage 2. These periods, characterised by increased aeolian dust supply and higher bottom currents, coincide with a phase of prolific cold-water coral growth and enhanced coral mound formation as recorded in numerous cores obtained from the southern Gulf of Cádiz. This implies that both records (on and off mound cores) are pivotal to provide the complete picture of the palaeo-climatic and palaeo-oceanographic conditions in the region.

Active chlorine in the atmosphere is poorly constrained and so is its role in the oxidation of the potent greenhouse gas methane, causing uncertainty in global methane budgets. We propose a photocatalytic mechanism for chlorine atom production that occurs when Sahara dust mixes with sea spray aerosol. The mechanism is validated by implementation in a global atmospheric model and thereby explaining the episodic, seasonal, and location-dependent 13C depletion in CO in air samples from Barbados [J.E. Mak, G. Kra, T. Sandomenico, P. Bergamaschi, J. Geophys. Res. Atmos. 108 (2003)], which remained unexplained for decades. The production of Cl can also explain the anomaly in the CO:ethane ratio found at Cape Verde [K. A. Read et al., J. Geophys. Res. Atmos. 114 (2009)], in addition to explaining the observation of elevated HOCl [M. J. Lawler et al., Atmos. Chem. Phys. 11, 7617–7628 (2011)]. Our model finds that 3.8 Tg(Cl) y−1 is produced over the North Atlantic, making it the dominant source of chlorine in the region; globally, chlorine production increases by 41%. The shift in the methane sink budget due to the increased role of Cl means that isotope-constrained top–down models fail to allocate 12 Tg y−1 (2% of total methane emissions) to 13C-depleted biological sources such as agriculture and wetlands. Since 2014, an increase in North African dust emissions has increased the 13C isotope of atmospheric CH4, thereby partially masking a much greater decline in this isotope, which has implications for the interpretation of the drivers behind the recent increase of methane in the atmosphere.

Here, we extend West African margin dust flux records back to 37 ka in a transect of sites from 19° to 27°N, and back to 67 ka at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Hole 658C, in order to explore the interplay of orbital and high-latitude forcings on North African climate and make quantitative estimates of dust flux during the core of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The ODP 658C record shows a Green Sahara interval from 60 to 50 ka during a time of high Northern Hemisphere summer insolation, with dust fluxes similar to levels during the early Holocene African Humid Period, and an abrupt peak in flux during Heinrich event 5a (H5a). Dust fluxes increase from 50 to 35 ka while the high-latitude Northern Hemisphere cools, with peaks in dust flux associated with North Atlantic cool events. From 35 ka through the LGM dust deposition decreases in all cores, and little response is observed to low-latitude insolation changes. Dust fluxes at sites from 21° to 27°N were near late Holocene levels during the LGM time slice, suggesting a more muted LGM response than observed from mid-latitude dust sources. Records along the northwest African margin suggest important differences in wind responses during different stadials, with maximum dust flux anomalies centered south of 20°N during H1 and north of 20°N during the Younger Dryas., This research was supported by NSF #OCE-1103262 to L. However, observational records of open‐ocean dust deposition are sparse. Here, we present the spatial and temporal evolution of Saharan dust deposition over 2 years from marine sediment traps across the North Atlantic, directly below the core of the Saharan dust plume, with highest dust fluxes observed in summer. We combined the observed deposition fluxes with model simulations and satellite observations and argue that dust deposition in the Atlantic is predominantly controlled by summer rains. The dominant depositional pathway changes from wet deposition in summer to dry deposition in winter. Wet deposition has previously been suggested to increase the release of dust‐derived nutrients and their bioavailability, which may be a key contributor to surface‐ocean productivity in remote and oligotrophic parts of the oceans.

New proxy records from deep‐sea sediment cores from the northwestern continental margin of Western Australian reveal a 5.3 million‐year (Ma) history of aridity and tropical‐monsoon activity in northwestern Australia. Following the warm and dry early Pliocene (~5.3 Ma), the northwestern Australian continent experienced a gradual increase in humidity peaking at about 3.8 Ma with higher than present‐day rainfall. Between 3.8 and about 2.8 Ma, climate became progressively more arid with more rainfall variability. Coinciding with the onset of the northern hemisphere glaciations and the intensification of the northern hemisphere monsoon, aridity continued to increase overall from 2.8 Ma until today, with greater variance in precipitation and an increased frequency of large rainfall events. We associate the observed large‐scale fluctuations in Australian aridity with variations in Indian Ocean sea‐surface temperatures (SST), which largely control the monsoonal precipitation in northwestern Australia. Key Points Continental‐margin sediments off northwestern Australia record large continental‐aridity shifts at 5.3, 3.8, 2.8 and 1.4 Ma. Grain size and chemistry of the terrigenous fraction of sea‐floor sediments and source areas on land allow a characterisation of river mud. Monsoonal activity responds to changes in Indian‐Ocean SSTs and drives river run‐off in northwestern Australia.

Over the last four decades of palaeoclimate research, significant emphasis has been placed on the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) spanning 26.5–19 thousand years ago (ka), a period that saw significant (∼125 m) sea-level reductions and major ice caps adorning large parts of the Northern Hemisphere. Here, we present evidence for another major glacial period spanning 71–59 ka (Marine Isotope Stage 4: MIS4) from a well-dated marine sequence offshore South Australia. The astronomically-tuned chronology of this deep-sea core is confirmed using single-grain optically stimulated luminescence dating (OSL), providing confidence in our high-resolution age model. Our approach to the study of our MD03-2607 core has been to employ many different proxies. These are: δ18O of both planktic and benthic foraminifera for stratigraphic purposes, faunal counts of planktonic foraminifera to reconstruct the position of oceanic fronts and currents, alkenone palaeothermometry, XRF core scanning to determine the presence of aeolian dust, and εNd isotope to identify fluvial discharge over the core site. We compare our new proxy findings with other archives for mainland Australia and Tasmania. Our multi-proxy palaeoclimate reconstructions are consistent with other marine, terrestrial and cryosphere archives across the Southern Hemisphere and suggest, for the first time, that MIS 4 was almost as dramatic as the LGM. During MIS4, global sea-level was reduced by ∼100 m, glaciers across Australasia were more significant compared to the LGM, and sea-surface temperatures were much reduced. These glacial conditions uniformly peaked around 65 ka. Global comparisons show major glacial conditions and vegetation shifts elsewhere during MIS4, but many are poorly dated. The significant environmental changes taking place during this glacial period were paralleled by waves of human dispersal across Eurasia and the earliest evidence of human occupation in northern Australia at 65 ka.
