Objective: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are used in the sterilization and manufacture of medical equipment. These compounds have high vapor pressures with low water solubility and are emitted as gases from solids or liquids. They can be mutagenic, neurotoxic, genotoxic, and/or carcinogenic. Safe limits of exposure are not known for neonates. This study examined determinants of exposure in newborns undergoing cardiac surgery., Methods: Twenty metabolites of 16 VOCs (eg, xylene, cyanide, acrolein, acrylonitrile, N, N-dimethylformamide, 1,3-butadiene, styrene, and benzene) were measured as metabolites in daily urine samples collected from 10 neonates undergoing cardiac operations (n = 150 samples). Metabolites were quantified using reversed-phase ultra-high performance liquid chromatography and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. Repeated measures analysis of covariance was performed for each metabolite to examine associations with use of medical devices., Results: At least 3 metabolites were detected in every sample. The median number of metabolites detected in each sample was 14 (range, 3-15). In a model controlling for other factors, the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation was associated with significantly (P ≤ .05) greater metabolite levels of acrolein, acrylonitrile, ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, styrene, and ethylbenzene. Patients breathing ambient air had greater levels of metabolites of acrolein, xylene, N,N-dimethylformamide, methyl isocyanate, cyanide, 1,3-butadiene (all P ≤ .05)., Conclusions: Exposure to volatile organic compounds is pervasive in newborns undergoing cardiac surgery. Sources of exposure likely include medical devices and inhalation from the air in the intensive care unit. Evidence on liver injury and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) exposure is insufficient. A cross-sectional study including 3011 US adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was conducted to explore the associations of urinary exposure biomarkers (EBs) for 13 VOCs (toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, styrene, acrylamide, N,N-dimethylformamide, acrolein, crotonaldehyde, 1,3-butadiene, acrylonitrile, cyanide, propylene oxide, and 1-bromopropane) with liver injury biomarkers and the risk of NAFLD by performing single-chemical (survey weight regression) and mixture (Bayesian kernel machine regression [BKMR] and weighted quantile sum [WQS]) analyses. We found significant positive associations of EBs for toluene and 1-bromopropane with alanine aminotransferase (ALT), EBs for toluene, crotonaldehyde, and 1,3-butadiene with asparate aminotransferase (AST), EBs for 1,3-butadiene and cyanide with alkaline phosphatase (ALP), EBs for xylene and cyanide with hepamet fibrosis score (HFS), EBs for the total 13 VOCs (except propylene oxide) with United States fatty liver index (USFLI), and EBs for xylene, N,N-dimethylformamide, acrolein, crotonaldehyde, and acrylonitrile with NALFD; and significant inverse associations of EBs for ethylbenzene, styrene, acrylamide, acrolein, crotonaldehyde, 1,3-butadiene, acrylonitrile, cyanide, and propylene oxide with total bilirubin, EBs for ethylbenzene, styrene, acrylamide, acrolein, 1,3-butadiene, acrylonitrile, and cyanide with albumin (ALB), EBs for ethylbenzene, styrene, acrylamide, N,N-dimethylformamide, acrolein, crotonaldehyde, 1,3-butadiene, acrylonitrile, cyanide, and propylene oxide with total protein (TP), and EB for 1-bromopropane with AST/ALT (all P-FDR<0.05). In BKMR and WQS, the mixture of VOC-EBs was significantly positively associated with ALT, AST, ALP, HFS, USFLI, and the risk of NAFLD, while significantly inversely associated with TBIL, ALB, TP, and AST/ALT. VOCs exposure was associated with liver injury and increased risk of NAFLD in US adults. The impact of microplastics (MPs, plastic particles ≤5 mm) on ecosystems is of great concern. Road surfaces represent a significant source of MPs where plastic fragments are physically and chemically reduced to MPs. However, the literature lacks information on fragmentation tendencies below 11 μm. This study aimed to characterize the occurrence of MPs in road dust in different size fractions down to 1.1 μm. Road dust was collected at five sites near a major road in Kusatsu city, Japan, and partitioned by size into 13 fractions (1.1-850 μm). The coarser fractions accounted for a greater proportion of the dust. The percentage of organic matter, determined by loss on ignition, increased as the fractions became finer. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to quantify 12 types of polymers in each fraction. The dust was found to contain nine types of MP, namely, polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinylchloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), styrene/butadiene rubber (SBR), acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene resin (ABS), polycarbonate (PC), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and polyamide 66 (PA66). The total MP concentration in road dust particles by particle size fraction (concentration f ) began to increase from the 125-250 μm fraction and remained elevated in finer fractions down to 1.1 μm, indicating that MPs in the road dust micronized to at least 1.1 μm. However, for individual polymer types, the tendency for concentration f to increase or decrease with particle size fraction varied: the concentration f of some polymers, such as PE and PVC, remained elevated in fractions down to 1.1 μm; the concentration f of SBR, a rubber-MP, showed a stable or decreasing trend in fractions of 7.0-11 μm and finer. Particles of PE, PVC, and some other plastics might become increasingly finer, even down to 1.1 μm. Introduction: The US Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) contains workplace measurements collected by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspectors. Its use for research is limited by the lack of record of a value for the limit of detection (LOD) associated with non-detected measurements, which should be used to set censoring point in statistical analysis. We aimed to remedy this by developing a predictive model of the volume of air sampled (V) for the non-detected results of airborne measurements, to then estimate the LOD using the instrument detection limit (IDL), as IDL/V., Methods: We obtained the Chemical Exposure Health Data from OSHA's central laboratory in Salt Lake City that partially overlaps IMIS and contains information on V. We used classification and regression trees (CART) to develop a predictive model of V for all measurements where the two datasets overlapped. The analysis was restricted to 69 chemical agents with at least 100 non-detected measurements, and calculated sampling air flow rates consistent with workplace measurement practices; undefined types of inspections were excluded, leaving 412,201/413,515 records. CART models were fitted on randomly selected 70% of the data using 10-fold cross-validation and validated on the remaining data. A separate CART model was fitted to styrene data., Results: Sampled air volume had a right-skewed distribution with a mean of 357 l, a median (M) of 318, and ranged from 0.040 to 1868 l. There were 173,131 measurements described as non-detects (42% of the data). For the non-detects, the V tended to be greater (M = 378 l) than measurements characterized as either 'short-term' (M = 218 l) or 'long-term' (M = 297 l). The CART models were complex and not easy to interpret, but substance, industry, and year were among the top three most important classifiers. They predicted V well overall (Pearson correlation (r) = 0.73, P < 0.0001; Lin's concordance correlation (rc) = 0.69) and among records captured as non-detects in IMIS (r = 0.66, P < 0.0001l; rc = 0.60). For styrene, CART built on measurements for all agents predicted V among 569 non-detects poorly (r = 0.15; rc = 0.04), but styrene-specific CART predicted it well (r = 0.87, P < 0.0001; rc = 0.86)., Discussion: Among the limitations of our work is the fact that samples may have been collected on different workers and processes within each inspection, each with its own V. Furthermore, we lack measurement-level predictors because classifiers were captured at the inspection level. We did not study all substances that may be of interest and did not use the information that substances measured on the same sampling media should have the same V. We must note that CART models tend to over-fit data and their predictions depend on the selected data, as illustrated by contrasting predictions created using all data vs. limited to styrene., Conclusions: We developed predictive models of sampled air volume that should enable the calculation of LOD for non-detects in IMIS. Our predictions may guide future work on handling non-detects in IMIS, although it is advisable to develop separate predictive models for each substance, industry, and year of interest, while also considering other factors, such as whether the measurement evaluated long-term or short-term exposure., (Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of The British Occupational Hygiene Society 2023.)

This study describes the development of 2-hydrazinobenzothiazole modified-amide/imide co-polymers for the extraction/pre-concentration of trace As(III), from edible vegetable oils. Their characterization was realized by help of instrumental techniques. The method is based on pH-dependent complexation between As(III) and co-polymeric chelators in presence of 35-fold excess As(V), their selective extraction into the mixed micellar phase, and detected at pH 2.0 and 6.0 by UV-vis spectrophotometer. The variables affecting extraction efficiency were optimized. From pre-concentration of 20-mL sample, the good linear relationships were obtained in range of 1-40 and 3-75 µg/L with DLs of 0.32 and 1.00 µg/L. The accuracy was verified by analysis of a certified sample without and with spiking. The method was applied into the analysis of iAs levels of samples. Clay toys have been used as play materials and educational tools for children. Clay toys exhibit adherent properties, and may facilitate chemical ingestion via dermal absorption and oral (hand-to-mouth, HTM) exposures. Inhalation exposure also be considered when contain volatile chemicals. The purpose of this study was to estimate the exposure dose for chemicals in clay toys via three exposure routes, and to evaluate the relationship between the exposure contribution of each route considering both the chemical properties and children's age. Chemical analysis was conducted for 9 semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), 17 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and 7 metal elements in clay toys (n = 66) purchased from Korean market. Exposure factors for usage pattern of clay toys were conducted based on a nationally representative survey in Korea. A total of 12,144 (60.7%) children responded positively to playing with clay toys. Exposure to SVOCs and VOCs in clay toys via HTM, inhalation, and dermal absorption were estimated. The exposure level was the highest in styrene with 5.2 × 10 -3 mg/kg-bw/day (95th percentile population), which was approximately 13% of the acceptable daily dose for styrene. In 3-year-old children, dermal absorption route contributed the highest at 59.2-100%. Chemicals with higher octanol-water partition coefficient (K ow ) had the greater the contribution of the dermal absorption route and the weaker the contribution of the HTM route. In infants (0-2 years), the contribution via HTM exposure was higher than that in the other age groups. The contribution of inhalation exposure differed depending on the volatility of the chemicals. Furthermore, the exposure route contribution significantly differed due to age-dependent behavioral changes in children. To optimize the effect-directed analysis (EDA) approach to identify the fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) bound organic toxicants, Jinzhong city, in the Shanxi Province of China, was selected as the object of our study. First, PM 2.5 samples were collected and their organic extracts were separated out in 9 fractions (F1-F9) using reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography after purification using gel permeation chromatography. Second, the toxicity effects of each fraction were measured by human bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B) in vitro. And toxicity effects included antioxidant stress (ROS, LDH, and CAT) and an inflammatory response (IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α). The results showed that the scores of the toxicity effects on multiple lines of evidence were the highest in the F3 and F4 fractions compared with those of the control. Subsequently, the main poisons, o-cymene, p-cymene, benzene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and styrene, were identified using GC×GC-TOF/MS. Finally, to confirm the above possible candidates, (1) the levels of o-cymene, p-cymene and BTEXS in daily PM 2.5 were measured using GC-MS in November 2020, and the rates of detection of these pollutants were 100% in PM 2.5 . Among them, o-cymene and p-cymene were first reported as the key toxic substances of PM 2.5 , and their average concentration values were 0.16 ± 0.11 and 0.18 ± 0.15 ng‧m -3 , respectively. (2) the toxicity of p-cymene may be no less than that of other benzene derivatives according to their LC50 in Daphnia magna. (3) based on canonical correlation analysis, the exposure to p-cymene, benzene, and styrene in PM 2.5 was most likely associated with the toxicity effects (CAT, IL-6, and TNF-α), which in turn caused the observed toxicity. In conclusion, p-cymene, benzene, and styrene were found to be the key toxic organics in PM 2.5 for cells in vitro. EDA technology avoids the limitations of chemical analysis and uncertainty of the biological testing and adds new toxicants to the control list of PM 2.5 , contributing to this study field. The potential for tristyrylphenol ethoxylates (TSPEOs) residues to contaminate crops or be released into the environment is of increasing concern, as they are toxic to living organisms. This study determined the dissipation of TSPEO homologues in cucumber under field conditions. TSPEOn (n = 6-29) dissipated more rapidly in cucumber than in soil samples, with half-lives of 1.80-4.30 d and 3.73-6.52 d, respectively. Short-chain TSPEOn (n = 6-11) persisted for longer than other oligomers in soil. Concentrations of the final residues (∑TSPEOs) in cucumber and soil were 24.3-1349 μg/kg and 47.3-1337 μg/kg, respectively. TSP15EO or TSP16EO was the dominant oligomer, with concentrations of 2.30-150 μg/kg. Persistent organic pollutants can accumulate inside the human body, including in mothers' milk, which may affect infant development. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine selected persistent organic pollutants in the milk of 100 mothers in Sendai city, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. We used gas-chromatography-electron capture negative chemical ionization-mass spectrometry to check for octachlorostyrene, dechlorane (Dec) plus, Dec 602, Dec 603, and Dec 604. Octachlorostyrene was detected in 86 samples at more than the method detection limit (84 pg g-lipid -1 ) but no dechloranes were above the method detection limit (1 ng mL -1 for dechlorane plus, Dec 602, and Dec 603; 20 ng mL -1 for Dec 604). The mean octachlorostyrene concentration was 461&nbsp;pg&nbsp;g-lipid -1 , the median was 337 pg g-lipid -1 , and the standard deviation 450 pg g-lipid -1 . No baseline characteristics were associated with octachlorostyrene level except for mother's occupation (stay-at-home mother, 353 ± 327 pg g-lipid -1 ; others, 531 ± 509 pg g-lipid -1 ). Octachlorostyrene was also significantly negatively correlated with lipid content (r = -0.35, p = 0.0004). However, the maximum intake of octachlorostyrene among infants in this study (3.5 ng/kg/day) was under the acceptable daily intake (30 ng/kg/day, derived from 12-month study in rats), and is therefore unlikely to pose a health risk., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Formulation of new liposoma-based systems can always be in the spotlight for their unique utilization as carriers. Some changes in the composition of lipids may give rise to new mixed liposomes exhibiting modified size and physico-chemical characteristics. Consequently, these display different encapsulating properties toward various molecules. In this work, we have explored the variations in the model lecithin liposomes with casein additive from their size, shape, microenvironment and dynamics in solution. It is observed that with introduction of casein, the size of the liposome is substantially reduced due to incorporation of the additive in its bilayer. Strong interaction between the hydrophobic side chains of casein and lipid bilayer, and electrostatic repulsion of head groups of lipid are responsible to result small casein-mixed liposomes. Spectral properties of coumarin-153 disclose that the microenvironment of the bi-layer of mixed system is predominantly hydrophobic in nature and much rigid too. Fluorescence-lifetime-imaging-microscopy indicates that casein mixed systems exhibit wider lifetime distribution than pure liposomes with predominance of longer lifetimes, entirely arising from the outer bilayer. This indicates that casein gets incorporated in the bilayer of the vesicle to cater rigid and more hydrophobic microenvironment with an effective decrease in size. It is found that such mixed system is very efficient to stabilize the hydrophobic drugs (curcumin and β-carotene) for prolonged period than the pure liposome or casein-only. The findings are indeed important from the perspective of drug stabilization by liposomes, and is suggestive of possible utilization in oral drug delivery applications involving such size-reduced nano-encapsulates., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. The risk of marine organisms ingesting plastics has become a growing concern due to hazard chemicals in plastics. To identify compounds to which seabirds potentially have substantial exposure, 194 plastics fragments and pellets ingested by seabirds, i.e., northern fulmars from the Faroe Islands, and laysan albatross and black-footed albatross from Mukojima Island, were analyzed piece by piece. Four kinds of UV stabilizers, 2 brominated flame retardants, and styrene oligomers were detected at detection frequencies of 4.6%, 2.1%, and 2.1%, respectively. Concentrations ranging from not detected (n.d.) - 1700 μg/g were measured for UV stabilizers, n.d. - 1100 μg/g for flame retardants, and n.d. - 3200 μg/g for styrene oligomers. We found that these chemicals could be retained in plastics during drifting and fragmentation in the ocean and transported to seabirds. The objective of this study is to investigate the qualitative contribution of internal and external factors of the area contaminated by polystyrene (PS) in coastal marine environments. This study is based on the extensive results of monitoring the styrene oligomers (SOs) present in sand and seawater samples along various coastlines of the Pacific Ocean. Here, anthropogenic SOs is derived from PS during manufacture and use, and can provide clues about the origin of SOs by PS pollution. The monitoring results showed that, if the concentration of SOs in water is higher than those concentrations in beach sand, this area could be affected by PS plastic caused by an external factor. On the other hand, if the concentration of SOs is higher in the beach sand, the region can be mainly influenced by PS plastic derived from its own area. Unlike the case of an external factor, in this case (internal influence), it is possible to take policy measures of the area itself for the PS plastic problem. Due to the long time in vehicular cabins, people have high exposure to the airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCS), which will lead to negative effects on human health. In order to analyze the influencing factors of in-car VOCS pollution concentrations, 38 taxis were investigated on the static and closed conditions. The interior air of taxis was collected through activated Tenax adsorption tubes, and the air samples were analyzed with thermally desorbed gas chromatograph. The average concentrations of in-car benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, styrene, butyl acetate, undecane, and total VOCS (TVOC) were 82.7, 212.3, 74.7, 182.3, 24.7, 33.5, 61.3, and 1,441.7 μg/m(3), respectively. Furthermore, the VOCS and TVOC concentrations increase with the rise of in-car temperature and relative humidity, and decrease with the increase of car age and total mileage. In addition, the VOCS and TVOC concentrations are higher in vehicles with small cabins than in ones with big cabins, and change with different sampling sites and various vehicular grades. Finally, according to the multiple linear regression analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis, car age is the most important factor influencing airborne VOCS and TVOC pollution concentrations in vehicular cabins, followed by interior temperature and total mileage.

Octachlorostyrene (OCS), a persistent and bioaccumulative toxicant (PBT), was assayed by fluorescence immunoassay based on the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between CdTe quantum dots (QDs) and rhodamine B-labeled OCS (RB-OCS). Anti-OCS antibody produced in this lab is adsorbed on a microtiter plate. The RB-OCS competes with OCS for the highly specific immunoreaction with the anti-OCS antibodies adsorbed on the microtiter plate. The solution is then isolated and mixed with CdTe QDs as fluorescent donor which excite the emission of RB-OCS through FRET. As a result, the emission of CdTe QDs at 530 nm decreases, whereas the emission of RB-OCS at 580 nm increases. The ratio of fluorescence intensity at 580 nm to that at 530 nm is proportional to the RB-OCS concentration at a fixed CdTe QDs concentration, and consequently proportional to the OCS concentration. Selective and sensitive responses to OCS are achieved with a linear range of 8-80 nM and a LOD of 3.8 nM. Because OCS is quantified based on the fluorescence ratio, the sensor-to-sensor difference is greatly eliminated, making the proposed method a useful approach for in site scanning of OCS., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Styryl (FM) dyes have been used for more than two decades to investigate exo- and endocytosis in conventional synapses. However, they are difficult to use in the inner hair cells of the auditory pathway (IHCs), as FM dyes appear to penetrate through mechanotransducer channels into the cytosol of IHCs, masking endocytotic uptake. To solve this problem we applied to IHCs the FM dye photo-oxidation technique, which renders the dyes into electron microscopy markers. Photo-oxidation allowed the unambiguous identification of labeled organelles, despite the presence of FM dye in the cytosol. This enabled us to describe the morphologies of several organelles that take up membrane in IHCs, both at rest and during stimulation. At rest, endosome-like organelles were detected in the region of the cuticular plate. Larger tubulo-cisternal organelles dominated the top and nuclear regions. Finally, the basal region, where the IHC active zones are located, contained few labeled organelles. Stimulation increased significantly membrane trafficking in the basal region, inducing the appearance of labeled vesicles and cistern-like organelles. The latter were replaced by small, synaptic-like vesicles during recovery after stimulation. In contrast, no changes in membrane trafficking were induced by stimulation in the cuticular plate region or in the top and nuclear regions. We conclude that synaptic vesicle recycling takes place mostly in the basal region of the IHCs. Other organelles participate in abundant constitutive membrane trafficking throughout the rest of the IHC volume.

An octachlorostyrene (OCS) photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor was developed by cross-linking anti-OCS antibody onto a CdTe/CdS-sensitized TiO2 nanotube arrays (NTAs). The anti-OCS polyclonal antibody was developed in rabbit as a result of immunization with BSA-OCS hapten conjugate. TiO2 NTAs were immobilized firstly with hydrothermally synthesized CdTe quantum dots (QDs), and then CdS which filled the spaces within the CdTe-TiO2 composite and encapsulated the CdTe QDs, forming an ideal stepwise bandedge structure, which benefited the light harvesting. The PEC immunosensor therefore shows high specificity and high sensitivity with a limit of detection of 2.58 pM, and a linear range from 5 pM to 50 nM. The testing time is 4 min. Owing to the extensive use of artificial turfs worldwide, over the past 10 years there has been much discussion about the possible health and environmental problems originating from styrene-butadiene recycled rubber. In this paper, the authors performed a Tier 2 environmental-sanitary risk analysis on five artificial turf sports fields located in the city of Turin (Italy) with the aid of RISC4 software. Two receptors (adult player and child player) and three routes of exposure (direct contact with crumb rubber, contact with rainwater soaking the rubber mat, inhalation of dusts and gases from the artificial turf fields) were considered in the conceptual model. For all the fields and for all the routes, the cumulative carcinogenic risk proved to be lower than 10(-6) and the cumulative non-carcinogenic risk lower than 1. The outdoor inhalation of dusts and gases was the main route of exposure for both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic substances. The results given by the inhalation pathway were compared with those of a risk assessment carried out on citizens breathing gases and dusts from traffic emissions every day in Turin. For both classes of substances and for both receptors, the inhalation of atmospheric dusts and gases from vehicular traffic gave risk values of one order of magnitude higher than those due to playing soccer on an artificial field.

Artificial surfaces for outdoor sporting grounds may pose environmental and health hazards that are difficult to assess due to their complex chemical composition. Ecotoxicity tests can indicate general hazardous impacts. We conducted growth inhibition (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) and acute toxicity tests (Daphnia magna) with leachates obtained from batch tests of granular infill material and column tests of complete sporting ground assemblies. Ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber (EPDM) leachate showed the highest effect on Daphnia magna (EC(50) < 0.4% leachate) and the leachate of scrap tires made of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) had the highest effect on P. subcapitata (EC(10) = 4.2% leachate; EC(50) = 15.6% leachate). We found no correlations between ecotoxicity potential of leachates and zinc and PAH concentrations. Leachates obtained from column tests revealed lower ecotoxicological potential. ON 013100, (E)-2,4,6-trimethoxystyryl-3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzyl sulfone, is a potent kinase inhibitor whose phosphate form is in Phase I clinical trials in lymphoma and acute lymphoid leukemia. The objectives were to: (a) investigate the possible presence of the glucuronide metabolite of the drug in two representative colon cancer cell lines, a drug resistant (colo-205) and a drug sensitive (colo-320); (b) quantify the glucuronide metabolite and the unchanged drug in the cells after treatment with ON 013100. The glucuronide was synthesized and a selective LC/MS/MS method was developed and validated for the characterization and quantification of the metabolite. The glucuronide metabolite (570.6 Da) was found in the drug-resistant cells upon a 1h incubation with ON 013100 (20 μg/ml). After treatment with the drug, the concentration of the metabolite gradually decreased from 0.84 μg/ml at 0 h through 0.21 μg/ml at 6h to below detection limit of 8.0 ng/ml at 9 h. No glucuronide metabolite was detected in the drug-sensitive cells. The concentrations of intact ON 013100 in the drug-resistant cells gradually decreased from 0.41 μg/ml (0 h) to 0.06 μg/ml (9 h). Techniques for fast, noninvasive measurement of neuronal excitability within a broad area will be of major importance for analyzing and understanding neuronal networks and animal behavior in neuroscience field. In this research, a novel implantable imaging system for fluorescence potentiometry was developed using a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, and its application to the analysis of cultured brain slices and the brain of a living mouse is described. A CMOS image sensor, small enough to be implanted into the brain, with light-emitting diodes and an absorbing filter was developed to enable real-time fluorescence imaging. The sensor, in conjunction with a voltage-sensitive dye, was certainly able to visualize the potential statuses of neurons and obtain physiological responses in both right and left visual cortex simultaneously by using multiple sensors for the first time. This accomplished multiplanar and multipoint measurement provides multidimensional information from different aspects. The light microsensors do not disturb the animal behavior. Freely dissolved pore water concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), penta- and hexachlorobenzene (PeCB and HCB), octachlorostyrene (OCS), p,p'-DDE and p,p'-DDD were measured in bottom sediments from three sites in Norway. Sediments were from Aker Brygge, site of a former shipyard in the inner part of Oslofjord, Frierfjord in the Grenlandsfjord area, impacted during the 50 year-long activity of a magnesium smelter plant, and from Kristiansand harbour, site with high industrial activity. Low density polyethylene (LDPE) membrane samplers were exposed to these sediments in laboratory incubation under constant and low-level agitation for periods of 1, 2, 6, 13, 23 and 50 days. Freely dissolved pore water concentrations were estimated from contaminant masses accumulated and sampling rates obtained from the measurement of kinetics of dissipation of performance reference compounds (PRCs). Marked differences in freely dissolved PAH concentrations and resulting organic carbon-normalised sediment-pore water partition coefficients, logK(TOC), between these three sediments could be observed despite the generally similar total sediment concentrations. In contrast with the PAH data, partitioning of PCBs and other organochlorine compounds (OCs) was relatively similar in all three sediments. For sediments from Frierfjord and Kristiansand, logK(TOC) values were lower for PCBs/OCs than for PAHs, indicating higher availability. Similar partitioning of PAHs and PCBs/OCs was found for sediments from Aker Brygge. No simple logK(oc)-logK(ow) relationships could model these data successfully. These results support the notion that the assessment of the risk posed by these compounds present in sediments in most cases requires actual measurement of contaminant availability., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Objective: To establish a rapid gas chromatographic method for determination of o-chlorostyrene in the air of workplace., Method: The air samples were collected by syringes, injected directly to the GC system, and then separated by a FFAP capillary column (30 m × 0.53 mm × 0.25 µm), finally determined by a Flame Ionization Detector., Results: A good linear correlation was showed within a range of 0 ∼ 1200 µg/L, with regression formula Y = 14 030 + 7 207X (r = 0.9999). The air sample could be stably stored in the syringe for 5 hrs. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of repeated injection of o-chlorostyrene standard solutions at three different concentration by six times was 1.28% ∼ 1.97%. The minimum detectable concentration was calculated to be 5.2 mg/m(3). Other coexistent violative organic compounds such as styrene, p-chlorostyrene, and m-chlorostyrene didn't interfere with the determination under the experimental conditions of this method., Conclusion: This method meets the requirement of "Guide for establishing occupational health standards-Part 4: Determination methods of air chemicals in workplace". It is applicable for determination of o-chlorostyrene in the air of workplace.

A specific and sensitive method based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has been developed for the determination of nitrovin and sodium nifurstyrenate residues in muscle and liver of swine and chicken and in muscle of fish. Sample preparation procedure includes ultrasound-assisted extraction with acetonitrile, defatting with n-hexane and final clean-up with solid phase extraction (SPE) on Oasis HLB cartridges. The analytes were detected in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) under negative scan mode acquiring two diagnostic product ions for sodium nifurstyrenate and under positive mode for nitrovin. The averaged decision limits (CCα; α 1%) ranged 0.09-0.26 μg/kg while the detection capability (CCβ; β 5%) was 0.33-0.97 μg/kg in the tissues. Reasonable recoveries (71-110%) spiked in muscle and liver showed excellent relative standard deviation (RSD). The validated method was simple, rapid, sensitive, and complied with the regulations for the determination of nitrovin and sodium nifurstyrenate residues in food matrices., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier B.V. 2-Styrylchromones (2-SC) are a chemical family of oxygen heterocyclic compounds, vinylogues of flavones (2-phenylchromones), whose occurrence in nature has been reported. Recently, several 2-SC derivatives were demonstrated to have antioxidant properties, namely, xanthine oxidase inhibition, hepatoprotection against pro-oxidant agents in cellular and non-cellular systems and scavenging activity against reactive oxygen and reactive nitrogen species (ROS and RNS). Considering these antioxidant properties, it may be hypothesised that the electrochemical redox behaviour of 2-SC contributes significantly to their activity. To test this hypothesis, the electrochemical behaviour of different 2-SC was studied, together with a number of flavonoids with well-known antioxidant activities, by cyclic voltammetry, and the results correlated to their ability to scavenge ROS and RNS. The results obtained showed that 2-SC with a catecholic B-ring have a low oxidation peak potential corresponding to the oxidation of the 3',4'-OH (catechol) moiety. The compounds with a phenolic B-ring have a common peak, with oxidation potential values of about +0.4/+0.5 V versus Ag/AgCl, corresponding to the oxidation of the 4'-OH. The oxidation of the hydroxyl substituents in the A-ring generated peaks of higher potentials (+0.7/+0.8 V vs Ag/AgCl). The results from the scavenging assays were in agreement with those obtained from the cyclic voltammetry, that is, higher scavenging effects corresponded to lower values of oxidation potentials, with significant correlation coefficients. The values obtained for the studied flavonoids are in accordance with the literature, and reflect their relative antioxidant activity, when compared to the studied 2-SC. Thus, in this family of compounds, oxidation potentials obtained by cyclic voltammetry seem to be applicable as a general indicator of radical scavenging activity.

The ecotoxicological effects of octachlorostyrene (OCS) on the aquatic larvae of the nonbiting midges Chironomus riparius (Diptera, Chironomidae) were investigated by evaluating their responses in various biological organizations, from the molecular and biochemical to the ecophysiological levels. The results of the 24-h lethality test of OCS on C. riparius suggest that this compound has a low acute toxic potential with respect to this species. The OCS exhibited serious chronic toxicity in C. riparius, however, especially on the species' development (pupation and emergence failure), the sex ratio of the emerged adults (high female to male ratio), and the adults' reproduction (oviposition failure). As the basic premise that changes in the gene expression can be harnessed to diagnose the exposure and effects of environmental chemicals is currently receiving significant attention, the increase in the expression of the heat shock protein and hemoglobin genes suggests that altered molecular-level parameters could be interpreted as early warning biomarkers of chemical stress. The establishment of a causal relationship between molecular and organism or population indicators is important, however, from the ecotoxicological point of view, although it is difficult to perform. The experimental evidence generated in the present study, especially at the molecular and biochemical levels, is not sufficient to demonstrate a plausible mechanistic linkage among responses across biological levels. Had more parameters at the molecular and biochemical levels been investigated, the mechanistic linkage might have been better identified. A mechanistic study appears to be necessary to understand causal relationships between gene expression and higher-level consequences, such as development and reproduction. The results of the present study may constitute an important contribution to knowledge on the ecotoxicology of OCS in aquatic organisms, about which little data is available.

Filamentous inclusions made of the microtubule-associated protein tau in a hyperphosphorylated state are a defining feature of a large number of human neurodegenerative diseases. Here we show that (trans,trans)-1-fluoro-2,5-bis(3-hydroxycarbonyl-4-hydroxy)styrylbenzene (FSB), a fluorescent Congo red derivative, labels tau inclusions in tissue sections from a mouse line transgenic for human P301S tau and in cases of familial frontotemporal dementia and sporadic Pick's disease. Labelling by FSB required the presence of tau filaments. More importantly, tau inclusions in the spinal cord of human P301S tau transgenic mice were labelled following a single intravenous injection of FSB. These findings indicate that FSB can be used to detect filamentous tau in vivo.

Major quantities of uranium find use as nuclear fuel in nuclear power reactors. In view of the extreme toxicity of uranium and consequent stringent limits fixed by WHO and various national governments, it is essential to remove uranium from nuclear power reactor effluents before discharge into environment. Ion imprinted polymer (IIP) materials have traditionally been used for the recovery of uranium from dilute aqueous solutions prior to detection or from seawater. We now describe the use of IIP materials for selective removal of uranium from a typical synthetic nuclear power reactor effluent. The IIP materials were prepared for uranyl ion (imprint ion) by forming binary salicylaldoxime (SALO) or 4-vinylpyridine (VP) or ternary SALO-VP complexes in 2-methoxyethanol (porogen) and copolymerizing in the presence of styrene (monomer), divinylbenzene (cross-linking monomer), and 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (initiator). The resulting materials were then ground and sieved to obtain unleached polymer particles. Leached IIP particles were obtained by leaching the imprint ions with 6.0 M HCl. Control polymer particles were also prepared analogously without the imprint ion. The IIP particles obtained with ternary complex alone gave quantitative removal of uranyl ion in the pH range 3.5-5.0 with as low as 0.08 g. The retention capacity of uranyl IIP particles was found to be 98.50 mg/g of polymer. The present study successfully demonstrates the feasibility of removing uranyl ions selectively in the range 5 microg - 300 mg present in 500 mL of synthetic nuclear power reactor effluent containing a host of other inorganic species.

Styryl dyes have been among the most widely used probes for mapping membrane potential changes in excitable cells. However, their utility has been somewhat limited because their excitation wavelengths have been restricted to the 450-550 nm range. Longer wavelength probes can minimize interference from endogenous chromophores and, because of decreased light scattering, improve recording from deep within tissue. In this paper we report on our efforts to develop new potentiometric styryl dyes that have excitation wavelengths ranging above 700 nm and emission spectra out to 900 nm. We have prepared and characterized dyes based on 47 variants of the styryl chromophores. Voltage-dependent spectral changes have been recorded for these dyes in a model lipid bilayer and from lobster nerves. The voltage sensitivities of the fluorescence of many of these new potentiometric indicators are as good as those of the widely used ANEP series of probes. In addition, because some of the dyes are often poorly water soluble, we have developed cyclodextrin complexes of the dyes to serve as efficient delivery vehicles. These dyes promise to enable new experimental paradigms for in vivo imaging of membrane potential.

To obtain a more complete description of individual neurons, it is necessary to complement the electrical patch pipette measurements with technologies that permit a massive parallel recording from many sites on neuronal processes. This can be achieved by using voltage imaging with intracellular dyes. With this approach, we investigated the functional structure of a mitral cell, the principal output neuron in the rat olfactory bulb. The most significant finding concerns the characteristics of EPSPs at the synaptic sites and surprisingly small attenuation along the trunk of the primary dendrite. Also, the experiments were performed to determine the number, location, and stability of spike trigger zones, the excitability of terminal dendritic branches, and the pattern and nature of spike initiation and propagation in the primary and secondary dendrites. The results show that optical data can be used to deduce the amplitude and shape of the EPSPs evoked by olfactory nerve stimulation at the site of origin (glomerular tuft) and to determine its attenuation along the entire length of the primary dendrite. This attenuation corresponds to an unusually large mean apparent "length constant" of the primary dendrite. Furthermore, the images of spike trigger zones showed that an action potential can be initiated in three different compartments of the mitral cell: the soma-axon region, the primary dendrite trunk, and the terminal dendritic tuft, which appears to be fully excitable. Finally, secondary dendrites clearly support the active propagation of action potentials.

Data from recent sediment and surface water surveys have been collated and mapped to illustrate the spatial distribution of contaminants across the entire Great Lakes basin. Information from historical surveys, together with data from surface water monitoring programs in three major connecting channels, has also been collated in order to evaluate temporal trends. In general, Lakes Superior and Michigan exhibited the lowest levels of sediment contamination while Lake Ontario had the highest. Contaminants such as gamma-HCH (lindane) and dieldrin were ubiquitous in surface waters across the entire basin, which was indicative of atmospheric sources. The distribution of other compounds including hexachlorobenzene, octachlorostyrene and mirex indicated the presence of local sources within the watersheds of the connecting channels. Surficial sediment contamination was found to have decreased markedly since the late 1960s and 1970s. Similarly, surface water contamination decreased over the period 1986-1997 with concentrations of dieldrin, hexachlorobenzene, octachlorostyrene and mirex reduced by over 50%. However, the spatial distributions of both sediment and surface water contamination indicate that further effort is warranted in reducing local sources of contaminants, particularly in Lake Ontario.

Two-color resonant two-photon mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy was used to identify styrene impurities in a commercial phenylacetylene sample. With the mass-gating setup, the recorded MATI spectra are free of contamination from molecules of different mass. Analysis of these spectra gives information on the precise adiabatic ionization and the active cation vibrations, which can be used as fingerprints for the identification of molecular ions.

Although octachlorostyrene (OCS) was never used as a commercial product, it may be produced during incineration and combustion processes involving chlorinated compounds. Its environmental spreading was evaluated through the analysis of several representative samples. OCS could not be measured in soil samples collected from urban and rural areas or sediments, but was present (up to 5.41 ng/g dry weight) in industrial soil collected near chemically polluted areas. For aquatic biota samples, the OCS concentrations in freshwater mussels ranged from <0.01 ng/g wet weight (ww) to 0.18 ng/g ww (mean 0.06 ng/g ww) and similar levels could be measured in 11 freshwater fish species from Belgium and Romania. A higher OCS contamination level was found in shrimps (mean 0.08 ng/g ww) compared to marine fish (mean 0.02 ng/g ww for bib and 0.01 ng/g ww for sole and whiting, respectively). OCS could also be measured in 19 harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) liver samples with a mean value of 1.90 ng/g ww. According to these data, it could be computed that the biomagnification factor for OCS was one order of magnitude lower than that of HCB in the fish-porpoise food chain. The mean OCS concentrations in blue tits (Parus caeruleus) eggs and great tits (Parus major) adipose tissue were 1.24 ng/g ww and 3.24 ng/g ww, respectively. OCS could be measured in different tissues of hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus), with the highest concentrations found in adipose tissue (mean 0.34 ng/g ww) and liver (mean 0.39 ng/g ww). In contrast, only low concentrations of OCS could be measured in human adipose tissue (up to 0.38 ng/g ww) and liver (up to 0.05 ng/g ww), while it could not be detected in human brain or lung. The relationship between the concentrations of OCS and HCB was also discussed for each species.

A new bacterial biosensor for styrene has been developed and characterized. A translational fusion of the lacZ gene to the sty promoter of Pseudomonas sp. strain Y2 has been inserted into miniTn5. Transposition of the recombinant transposon to the chromosome of Pseudomonas sp. strain Y2 resulted in a whole-cell biosensor able to detect and degrade styrene. In this biosensor, the endogenous StyS/StyR system detects the presence of styrene and turns on the expression of the exogenous reporter gene from the transferred construction. Other compounds such as toluene, epoxystyrene, phenylacetaldehyde and 2-phenylethanol also induced expression of beta-galactosidase although quantitative differences in their effect are clearly detected. Non-inducing compounds affect differently the sensitivity to inducing compounds when present in a mixture.

A micellar electrokinetic chromatographic (MEKC) method has been developed for the determination of five anthraquinones and one distyrene derivative in rhubarb. The separation conditions were optimized and two kinds of rhubarb plants and rhubarb-containing medicines were analyzed. The negatively charged solutes migrated toward the anode and were retarded by their interaction with the micelle. Hydrophobicity of the solutes was studied by both MEKC with SDS and SDS-free capillary zone electrophoresis in the buffer of 15 mmol/L NaH(2)PO(4)+ 20 mmol/L borax and 15% ethanol (v/v). Linear correlation between log k' and log P(OW) was obtained for the five anthraquinones in SDS micelle system. The capacity factor, k', and free energy differences delta(deltaG) derived from this method provided fundamental information on the interaction between the solutes and the micelle.

Recently, several substances from among the huge numbers of chemicals used by mankind have been implicated as instigators of disrupted endocrine function and related human health problems. Polystyrene (PS) is one of the most frequently used resins in the world, and the styrene oligomer dissolved out from PS has been designated as a potential trigger of estrogen-like activity in the Wingspread Declaration and the Japan Environment Agency's SPEED98 [JEA (Japan Environment Agency) Strategic Problem on Environmental Endocrine Disruptors '98 (SPEED) '98), http://www.env.go.jp/en/pol/speed98/sp98.html]. In order to assess the endocrine disrupting effect of styrene oligomers, we tested one styrene monomer (SM), three styrene dimers (SDs) and seven styrene trimers (STs), newly isolated from optical isomers, known to dissolve in small amounts from cup noodle containers made of polystyrene by the estrogen receptor binding assay, luciferase reporter gene assay, and human breast cancer cell MCF-7 proliferation assay. In all three tests, none of the SM, SDs and STs showed any significant activity. Accordingly, we concluded that these substances have no estrogenic activity.

The chemical identities of several organic compounds that dominate the ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence of water after exposure to gasoline, diesel fuel and crude oil are presented. A combination of high-performance liquid chromatography with UV-fluorescence detection, fluorescence spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is used to show that naphthalene, methylnaphthalene and methylstyrene are the major fluorescent species in water following exposure to gasoline. These compounds are not dominant in water exposed to other petrochemicals we studied.

Electrical measurements on planar lipid bilayers, patch/voltage clamp experiments, and spectroscopic investigations involving a potential sensitive dye are reviewed. These experiments were performed to analyze the kinetics of charge translocation of the Na+,K+-ATPase. High time resolution was achieved by applying caged ATP, voltage-jump, and stopped-flow techniques, respectively. Kinetic parameters and the electrogenicity of the relevant transitions in the Na+,K+-ATPase reaction cycle are discussed.

An unidentified styrene trimer (ST) isolated from the acetonitrile extract of polystyrene (PS) food containers was characterized as (1S*,6R*,7S*,8S*,11R*)-6,11-diphenyltricyclo[6,2,2,0(2,7)]dodeca-2,9-diene. The content and migration of this compound in PS food containers were determined by GC-MS (SIM). Furthermore, an endocrine-disrupting effect was tested using in vitro and in vivo assays of the compound. In conclusion, it seems that the compound does not present the effect.

Conditions for a gas-chromatographic determination of vapors and aerosols of p-chlorostyrene and 2,6-dichlorostyrene contained in workplace air samples were determined. The method is based on the adsorption of p-chlorostyrene and 2,6-dichlorostyrene on activated charcoal and fiberglass, desorption with toluene and analysis of the obtained solution by capillary gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (FID). The determination limit of the method is 5 mg m(-3) for each substance.

A workplace protection factor (WPF) study was conducted with a half-mask air-purifying respirator during fiber glass boat production. Styrene was the measured analyte, and the geometric mean WPF found was 39.7. Analytical detection limits, sample contamination, and pulmonary elimination from previous exposures or from skin absorption were identified as important considerations that can bias the WPFs measured. There were significant differences in the mean concentrations found inside the respirator when analyzed by time period. An increase in the concentration found inside the facepiece cavity and a decrease in the WPF over time was found for people with three or four measurements. This indicates either a change in performance of the respirator over time or a bias from low-level exposures during the day or skin absorption.

Styrene-7,8-oxide (SO) is generated at low concentrations from the oxidation of styrene during the processing of reinforced plastics. Since exposure to SO has important health implications, we developed air sampling and analytical methods to measure low levels of airborne SO in the presence of styrene and its other oxidation products, namely phenylacetaldehyde (PAA) and acetophenone (AP). Both active and passive air monitors were used. The active sampling method, which employed adsorption on Tenax, was suitable for measuring SO, PAA and AP but had limited capacity for styrene due to breakthrough. The passive monitor employed a carbon adsorbent and was suitable for measurement of styrene and SO but not PAA and AP due to poor recovery. After sampling, the analytes were extracted from the adsorbents with ethyl acetate and measured by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection or mass spectrometry. By maintaining the injection port at 70 degrees C, the thermal rearrangement of SO to PAA was minimized. Recovery of styrene and SO from the passive monitor depended upon loading and was corrected by linearization of the Freundlich isotherm. The limits of detection for SO, PAA, and AP were 0.2 ppb using the active monitor, and for SO was 1 ppb using the passive monitor. The sampling precision for SO (RSD from personal measurements) was 5.0% for the passive monitor and was 13.4% for the active monitor over a range of exposures from 5-150 ppb. The corresponding precision for styrene was 5.3% for the passive monitor for levels ranging from 1.2 to 104 ppm. Measurements of 235 personal exposures with the active monitor in 12 facilities manufacturing fiberglass-reinforced plastics (FRP) showed that levels of AP and PAA were below 7.8 ppb and 5 ppb, respectively. In contrast, SO averaged 30.4 ppb (SE=2.4) in these FRP facilities, ranging from below 0.2 ppb to 190 ppb. The active monitor was also used to detect airborne SO at levels of approximately equals 1 ppb in one facility manufacturing styrene butadiene rubber, suggesting that SO is generally present during the polymerization of styrene. Personal passive monitoring in the 12 FRP facilities (n = 657) revealed mean concentrations of styrene ranging between 1.8 and 55.4 ppm, and for SO between 1.7 and 62.6 ppb. The ratio of the mean styrene level to the mean SO level varied between 449:1 and 1,635:1 among the 12 FRP facilities.

The possible interference of hexachlorobenzene and octachlorostyrene (i.e., thermal byproducts from hexachloroethane in aluminum degassing) with porphyrin metabolism was investigated in exposed workers. Urine specimens from 9 male aluminum foundry workers (i.e., smelters) at 6 different companies and from 18 controls-matched for sex, age, residence, and socioeconomic status-were analyzed for total porphyrins and porphyrin isomers. Workers exposed to hexachlorobenzene and octachlorostyrene had a statistically significant increase in urinary total porphyrins, compared with controls (mean +/- standard deviation: 13.63 +/- 11.13 micromol/mol creatinine and 6.24 +/- 3.84 micromol/mol creatinine, respectively; p = .02). The authors attributed the results mainly to differences in excretion of coproporphyrins-notably coproporphyrin III. Erythrocyte uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase activity was similar in both groups. There was a high correlation between levels of hexachlorobenzene and octachlorostyrene, respectively, in plasma and urinary excretion of porphyrins; these findings, however, relied heavily on 1 subject for whom extreme values were obtained. The results indicated that occupational exposure to hexachlorobenzene and octachlorostyrene in aluminum degassing with hexachloroethane may affect porphyrin metabolism in a manner consistent with early secondary coproporphyrinuria-the first recognized step in the development of chronic hepatic porphyria. It was also noted that changes remained detectable some years after exposure ceased.

Chlorinated styrenes were identified in fish (bream) and sediment samples from the river Elbe. Four hexachlorostyrenes, four heptachlorostyrenes (concentrations in fish 1-10 ng/g wet weight) and octachlorostyrene (10-45 ng/g wet weight) were analysed. The gas chromatographic retention times and the electron impact (EI) mass spectra of the respective hepta- and hexachloro congeners found in the environment as well as those of some synthesised compounds are presented and discussed. The comparison of the chromatograms from the samples in the upper part of the river with those from the estuary revealed a possible difference in the pattern of chlorostyrenes.

The instrumental design and experimental conditions for high-speed, simultaneous optical recording of membrane potential and intracellular Ca2+ with subcellular resolution are presented. This method employs an extended version of a high-speed, random-access, laser-scanning fluorescence microscope designed to record fast physiological signals from small neuronal structures with high spatiotemporal resolution (Bullen, Patel, Saggau, Biophys J 73:477-491, 1997). With this instrument, imaging and optical recording functions are conducted separately allowing frame rates up to 3 kHz. Individual scanning points are selected interactively from a reference image collected with differential interference contrast (DIC) optics. At each recording site, fluorescence from two indicators is measured simultaneously by independent photodetectors. To optimize signal strength, spectral separation and the achievable signal-to-noise ratio, several combinations of voltage-sensitive dye, Ca2+ indicator and optical elements (dichroic mirrors, filters, etc.) were considered. The best results were achieved from the combination of the intracellular voltage-sensitive dye Di-2-ANEPEQ and the Ca2+ indicator Calcium Green-1. These indicators have overlapping absorption spectra allowing simultaneous excitation with a single laser line (488 nm). Spectral separation of the fluorescence from these two indicators was accomplished using a secondary dichroic mirror (DCLP580) and emission filters (535/45 and OG590). The primary olfactory neuropil, the antennal lobe (AL) in insects, is organized in glomeruli. Glomerular activity patterns are believed to represent the across-fibre pattern of the olfactory code. These patterns depend on an organized innervation from the afferent receptor cells, and interconnections of local interneurons. It is unclear how the complex organization of the AL is achieved ontogenetically. In this study, we measured the functional activity patterns elicited by stimulation with odours in the right and the left AL of the same honeybee (Apis mellifera) using optical imaging of the calcium-sensitive dye calcium green. We show here that these patterns are bilaterally symmetrical (n=25 bees). This symmetry holds true for all odours tested, irrespective of their role as pheromones or as environmental odours, or whether they were pure substances or complex blends (n=13 odours). Therefore, we exclude that activity dependent mechanisms local to one AL determine the functional glomerular activity. This identity is genetically predetermined. Alternatively, if activity dependent processes are involved, bilateral connections would have to shape symmetry, or, temporal constraints could lead to identical patterns on both sides due to their common history of odour exposure.

The level of styrene migration from polystyrene cups was monitored in different food systems including: water, milk (0.5, 1.55 and 3.6% fat), cold beverages (apple juice, orange juice, carbonated water, cola, beer and chocolate drink), hot beverages (tea, coffee, chocolate and soup (0.0, 0.5, 1, 2, and 3.6% fat), take away foods (yogurt, jelly, pudding and ice-cream), as well as aqueous food simulants (3% acetic acid, 15, 50, and 100% ethanol) and olive oil. Styrene migration was found to be strongly dependent upon the fat content and storage temperature. Drinking water gave migration values considerably lower than all of the fatty foods. Ethanol at 15% showed a migration level equivalent to milk or soup containing 3.6% fat. Maximum observed migration for cold or hot beverages and take-away foods was 0.025% of the total styrene in the cup. Food simulants were responsible for higher migration (0.37% in 100% ethanol). A total of 60 food samples (yogurt, rice with milk, fromage, biogardes, and cheese) packed in polystyrene containers were collected from retail markets in Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. The level of styrene detected in the foods was always fat dependent.

There is continuing interest, by health professionals and individuals, in the composition of mainstream tobacco smoke. Regular official surveys of tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide yields are from time to time supplemented by special surveys of specific components. In this study, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to identify and quantify benzene and certain other volatile compounds of interest in the mainstream smoke of 26 cigarette brands on the UK market and of smoke from hand rolled tobacco. Validation of the method adopted demonstrated the ability to identify and to measure reliably the yields of benzene and seven other compounds: toluene, ethylbenzene, m/p-xylene, o-xylene, styrene, isoprene and acrylonitrile. Yields of these analytes were ranked and compared with the tar yields of the brands. In general terms, brands yielding < or = 3 mg of tar yielded proportionately more of the vapour phase analytes than did brands yielding > 3 mg of tar per cigarette. For many of the higher tar brands the yield of vapour phase analyte was approximately proportional to the tar yield. Smoking cigarettes with an average yield of 50 micron of benzene per cigarette has been compared with the occupational maximum exposure limit (16 mg m-3) concentration and with US studies on the home environment. Smoking the majority of brands examined could contribute significantly to the population exposure of benzene and the other volatile organic compounds considered in this study.

Headspace sampling methods prior to capillary gas chromatography have been widely used for the determination of volatile compounds present in very different kinds of samples. This paper describes an automated and rapid system to determine volatiles from yoghurt. Thirty-five volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were identified in polystyrene cups used for yoghurt packaging and 42 VOCs from yoghurt samples. Quantitation of styrene in several samples from the Spanish retail market was carried out.
