Purpose: The University of Michigan (U-M) is planning its course toward carbon neutrality. A key component in U-M carbon accounting is the calculation of carbon sinks via estimation of carbon storage and biosequestration on U-M landholdings. Here, this paper aims to compare multiple remote sensing methods across U-M natural lands and urban campuses to determine the accurate and efficient protocol for land assessment and ecosystem service valuation that other institutions may scale as relevant. Design/methodology/approach: This paper tested three remote sensing methods to determine land use and land cover (LULC), namely, unsupervised classification, supervised classification and supervised classification incorporating delineated wetlands. Using confusion matrices, this paper tested remote sensing approaches to ground-truthed data, the paper obtained via field-based vegetation surveys across a subset of U-M landholdings. Findings: In natural areas, supervised classification incorporating delineated wetlands was the most accurate and efficient approach. In urban settings, maps incorporating institutional knowledge and campus tree surveys better estimated LULC. Using LULC and literature-based carbon data, this paper estimated that U-M lands store 1.37-3.68 million metric tons of carbon and sequester 45,000-86,000 Mt CO2e/yr, valued at $2.2m-$4.3m annually ($50/metric ton, social cost of carbon). Originality/value: This paper compared methods to identify an efficient and accurate remote sensing methodology to identify LULC and estimate carbon storage, biosequestration rates and economic values of ecosystem services provided.

Comprehensive Summary: Metal organic frameworks have been employed as high‐performance layered double hydroxide (LDH) composite supercapacitor electrode materials but have shown unsatisfactory redox ability and stability. Herein, a host‐guest CuMo‐based polyoxometalate‐based metal organic framework (POMOF) with copious electrochemically active sites and strong electrochemical redox activities has been effectively coupled with POM‐incorporated CoNi‐LDH to develop a nanocomposite (NENU‐5@CoNi‐LDH) by a simple solvothermal method. The designed electrode shows a high specific capacity of 333.61 mAh·g–1 at 1 A·g–1. In addition, the novel hybrid symmetric supercapacitor NENU‐5@CoNi‐LDH/active carbon (AC) demonstrated a high energy density of 80.8 Wh·kg–1 at a power density of 750.7 W·kg–1. Interestingly, the nanocomposite of NENU‐5@CoNi‐LDH exhibits an outstanding capacitance retention of 79% after 5000 charge‐discharge cycles at 10 A·g–1. Ceria (CeO 2 ) becomes a promising candidate as electromagnetic wave absorbing materials (EWAMs) for their abundant natural source, rich oxygen vacancy, charge conversion, and electron transfer abilities. However, it remains challenging to regulate its nanoscale and atom-scale composition to optimize the absorbing performance and develop high-performance commercial devices. Herein, a facile method to large-scale synthesis CeO 2 @Co-x% (x = 5, 7, 9, 11, 13) series EWAMs with diverse amounts of decorated CoO x is presented. By modulating the ratio of doped CoO x , a rational hetero-interface is created in CeO 2 @Co-9% to enhance natural and exchange resonances, improving magnetic loss capability and optimizing impedance matching. Doped CoO x promotes the charge accumulation, interfacial polarization, and multiple scattering of the CeO 2 for strengthening the EW absorption and attenuation, which display superb minimum reflective loss (RL min ) of -74.4 dB with a wide effective absorbing bandwidth (EAB) of 5.26 GHz. Furthermore, a dual crosslinking strategy is employed to fabricate CeO 2 @Co-9% into an aerogel device with integrated lightweight, heat insulation, compression resistance, and fame-retardant functions. The solar-driven evolution of hydrogen from water using particulate photocatalysts is considered one of the most economical and promising protocols for achieving a stable supply of renewable energy. However, the efficiency of photocatalytic water splitting is far from satisfactory due to the sluggish electron-hole pair separation kinetics. Herein, isolated Mo atoms in a high oxidation state have been incorporated into the lattice of Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S (CZS@Mo) nanorods, which exhibit photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 11.32 mmol g -1  h -1 (226.4 μmol h -1 ; catalyst dosage 20 mg). Experimental and theoretical simulation results imply that the highly oxidized Mo species lead to mobile-charge imbalances in CZS and induce the directional photogenerated electrons transfer, resulting in effectively inhibited electron-hole recombination and greatly enhanced photocatalytic efficiency., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)
