18. Poly(quinone-1,4-diaminoanthraquinone) cathodes for stable Zn2+ storage in aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Abstract

Organic cathode materials have attracted much attention owing to their sustainability and structure designability. However, the structural design of high electrochemical-performance organic cathode in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) still needs further development. Herein, we propose poly(quinone-1,4-diaminoanthraquinone) (PQN14) as the cathode to stabilize Zn2+ storage based on the configuration suitability of chelating C = O units and N atoms along large conjugated chains. PQN14 exhibits a specific discharge capacity of 158 mAh g−1 at 0.02 A g−1 and has a 75% capacity retention after 400 cycles. Even at 0.1 A g−1, it exhibits a 72% capacity retention after 1000 cycles. Redox kinetics analysis indicates that PQN14 exhibits efficient capacitive and ion diffusion controlled behaviors. The Zn2+ storage mechanism of PQN14 is investigated via ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, which indicates that the moderate active site configuration in PQN14 is conducive to coordination with Zn2+. The active site configuration involves all carbonyl groups and N atoms to realize stable Zn2+ insertion. This approach, which tunes the configuration to afford high electrochemical performance, may provide a progressive perspective for developing organic cathode materials for AZIBs. Abstract

Salt stress greatly hinders plant growth and development, as well as crop production. To expand the planting area and choose salt-resistant varieties of apple (Malus × domestica), it is necessary to elucidate the salt-resistance mechanisms. Here, we identified a salt-responsive WRKY transcription factor, MdWRKY55. The overexpression of MdWRKY55 in apple calli significantly improved salt tolerance. MdWRKY55 bound to the MdNHX1 promoter, thereby enhancing its transcription. MdNAC17-L significantly promoted the effect of MdWRKY55 on the expression of downstream MdNHX1 by forming a protein complex. The functional analysis of MdWRKY55 provided valuable insights into the apple salt-tolerance regulatory network and established a theoretical basis for the molecular breeding of salt-tolerant apple. • Identified a salt-responsive WRKY transcription factor, MdWRKY55. • MdWRKY55 overexpression in apple calli significantly improved salt tolerance. • MdWRKY55 bound to the MdNHX1 promoter, enhancing its transcription. • MdNAC17-L significantly promoted MdWRKY55′s effect on downstream MdNHX1 expression. 41. Design Principles for Rotational Cluster Anion [BH4]−Promote Superionic Conductivity in Sodium-Rich Antiperovskite Na3OBH4

Abstract

The ionic conductivity is determined by the activation energies and the jump attempt frequencies of carrier migrations between adjacent sites. However, few works in the past have considered the influence of the attempt frequency. In this work, the attempt frequencies of carrier migrations in Na3OBH4and Na3OBr are calculated using density functional theory and written as the contribution of each element using frequency analysis, which can be used to calculate the conductivity of a carrier in combination with the defect concentration, migration barrier of carrier migration in equilibrium. The results show that the conductivity of sodium cations can be greatly improved by substituting Br−with the [BH4]−tetrahedral anion in an antiperovskite structure due to two reasons: (1) the paddle-wheel mechanism (PWM) of the [BH4]−anionic groups can effectively reduce the activation energy and (2) the [BH4]−anionic groups with a high vibration frequency undoubtedly improve the carrier jump attempt frequency by the buffering effect. The quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA) is used to describe the isobaric behavior of Na3OBH4and Na3OBr, and the results show that carriers have a higher jump attempt frequency in the zero-pressure compared with the constant volume. The ionic conductivity (σ) in Na3OBr and Na3OBH4are obtained from the Arrhenius equation. The results show that the calculated sodium ionic conductivity of Na3OBH4is 3–4 orders of magnitude higher than that of Na3OBr at room temperature. The calculated sodium ionic conductivity is lower than the experimental measurement, and the discrepancy is attributed to the overestimation of the calculated migration barrier and the underestimation of the defect concentration.
