1. Probing phase transitions with correlations in configuration space

Abstract

In principle, the probability of configurations, determined by the system's partition function or wave function, encapsulates essential information about phases and phase transitions. Despite the exponentially large configuration space, we show that the generic correlation of distances between configurations, with a degree of freedom proportional to the lattice size, can probe phase transitions using importance sampling procedures like Monte Carlo simulations. The distribution of sampled distances varies significantly across different phases, suggesting universal critical behavior for uncertainty and participation entropy. For various classical spin models with different phases and transitions, finite-size analysis based on these quantities accurately identifies phase transitions and critical points. Notably, in all cases, the critical exponent derived from the uncertainty of distances equals the anomalous dimension governing real-space correlation decay. Thus, configuration space correlations, defined by distance uncertainties, share the same decay ratio as real-space correlations, determining the universality class of phase transitions. This work applies to diverse lattice models with different local degrees of freedom, e.g., two levels for Ising-like models, discrete multi-levels for q-state clock models, and continuous local levels for the XY model, offering a robust, alternative method for understanding complex phases and transitions., Comment: 17 figures, 15 pages

Abstract

We reinvestigate the phase transitions of the Ising model on the Kagome lattice with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions, which has a six-state-clock spin ice ground state and two consecutive Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transitions. Employing the classical Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, the phases are characterized by the magnetic order parameter, and the critical temperatures are obtained by the finite-size scaling of related physical quantities. Moreover, we attempt to gain general information on the phase transitions from the MC process instead of MC results and successfully extract the correct transition points with surprisingly high accuracy. Specifically, we focus on the selected data set of uncorrelated MC configurations and quantify the MC process using the distribution of two-configuration Hamming distances in this small data collection. This distribution is more than a quantity that features different behaviors in different phases but also nicely supports the same BKT scaling form as the order parameter, from which we successfully determine the two BKT transition points with surprisingly high accuracy. We also discuss the connection between the phase transitions and the intrinsic dimension extracted from the Hamming distances, which is widely used in the growing field of machine learning and is reported to be able to detect critical points. Our findings provide a new understanding of the spin ice transitions in the Kagome lattice and can hopefully be used similarly to identify transitions in the quantum system on the same lattice with strong frustrations., Comment: 12 figures

Abstract

Kawasaki disease (KD) is a form of acute systemic vasculitis syndrome that predominantly occurs in children under the age of 5 years. Its etiology has been postulated due to not only genetic factors but also the presence of foreign antigens or infectious agents. To evaluate possible associations between Kawasaki disease (KD) and COVID-19, we investigated humoral responses of KD patients against S-protein variants with SARS-CoV-2 variant protein microarrays. In this study, plasma from a cohort of KD (N = 90) and non-KD control (non-KD) (N = 69) subjects in categories of unvaccinated–uninfected (pre-pandemic), SARS-CoV-2 infected (10–100 days after infection), and 1-dose, 2-dose, and 3-dose BNT162b2 vaccinated (10–100 days after vaccination) was collected. The principal outcomes were non-KD–KD differences for each category in terms of anti-human/anti-His for binding antibodies and neutralizing percentage for surrogate neutralizing antibodies. Binding antibodies against spikes were lower in the KD subjects with 1-dose of BNT162b2, and mean differences were significant for the P.1 S-protein (non-KD–KD, 3401; 95% CI, 289.0 to 6512; P = 0.0252), B.1.617.2 S-protein (non-KD–KD, 4652; 95% CI, 215.8 to 9087; P = 0.0351) and B.1.617.3 S-protein (non-KD–KD, 4874; 95% CI, 31.41 to 9716; P = 0.0477). Neutralizing antibodies against spikes were higher in the KD subjects with 1-dose of BNT162b2, and mean percentage differences were significant for the 1-dose BNT162b2 B.1.617.3 S-protein (non-KD–KD, −22.89%; 95% CI, −45.08 to −0.6965; P = 0.0399), B.1.1.529 S-protein (non-KD–KD, −25.96%; 95% CI, −50.53 to −1.376; P = 0.0333), BA.2.12.1 S-protein (non-KD–KD, −27.83%; 95% CI, −52.55 to −3.115; P = 0.0195), BA.4 S-protein (non-KD–KD, −28.47%; 95% CI, −53.59 to −3.342; P = 0.0184), and BA.5 S-protein (non-KD–KD, −30.42%; 95% CI, −54.98 to −5.869; P = 0.0077). 19. Effects of high frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on emotional disorders and P300 of patients with Parkinson's disease

Abstract

Background Previous studies revealed that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can obviously improve the motor function of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Since the non-motor symptoms of late stage PD can induce worse impacts on patients, it is important to investigate the clinical effects of high frequency rTMS on non-motor symptoms including emotional and cognitive disorders of PD patients. Methods Sixty-five patients with PD received rTMS therapy. Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) and P300 before and after treatment were recorded to assess the effect of rTMS on patient's emotions, abilities of daily living and motor functions. Results After treatment, the total UPDRS (t = 10.872, P = 0.000), UPDRSⅠ (t = 4.538, P = 0.023), UPDRSⅡ (t = 8.846, P = 0.012) and UPDRSⅢ scores (t = 9.114, P = 0.000) were all significantly decreased. The incidence rate of depression and anxiety was reduced from 52.46% (32/61) to 29.51% (18/61), and cognitive disorder from 42.62% (26/61) to 32.79% (20/61). HAMA (t = 3.692, P = 0.000) and HAMD (t = 4.241, P = 0.000) scores were significantly reduced, but hallucinogenesis was increased from 18.03% (11/61) to 29.51% (18/61). The incubation period of P300 was significantly reduced (t = 5.924, P = 0.000), but the amplitude was increased (t = 8.512, P = 0.000). Conclusion High frequency rTMS can reduce anxiety and depression, and improve cognition of PD patients.

Abstract

The process of software changes is complex and constantly needed to be monitored, controlled and tracked by a systematic approach or mechanism. For the past decades, organizations invested great amount of effort, money and resources in quality management system (QMS) to ensure software change control management (SCCM) and business operations are consistent, reliable and meeting customers’ needs. As such, it is important for every project team member to comply and adhere to change control standards following best practices maximizing business advantages, enhancing product quality, improving process routines and increases performance earnings. A formalized SCCM without compliance from project team is equivalence to "procedure on paper". This paper discusses the need of joined effort from both project manager and technical team in view of organizational level achievement in software quality assurance. At the same time, this paper provides a general overview of how software change control is carried out in the context of IT Project Management. A step-by-step project activity within system development life cycle (SDLC) and project life cycle (PLC) is discussed in the paper.

Abstract

Test specimens were prepared from China fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata Hook), and impregnated with five fire retardant chemicals listed in Chinese National Standards (CNS). The treated specimens were tested for their combustibility according to CNS 6532 to measure the time required for the temperature of the exhausting air to exceed the standard referential curve, heat generation, factor of smoke, time of after-flame, and occurrence of cracks of the test. Abstract

Lung cancer is a harmful form of cancer. The long-term survival rate of lung cancer patients treated by conventional modalities remains far from satisfactory. Encapsulated anticancer drugs in nanocarriers, can protect not only the integrity of drugs during transport but also the normal tissues from the toxicity. To develop an effective drug delivery system for lung cancer therapy, gelatin nanoparticles (GPs) were modified with NeutrAvidinFITC-biotinylated epidermal growth factor (bEGF) to form EGF receptor (EGFR)-seeking nanoparticles (GP-Av-bEGF). Cisplatin, a key drug used in the chemotherapy with sever side effect, was incorporated in the nanocarriers for active targeting to reduce toxicity. Furthermore, these nanocarriers were given to mice via inhalation of aerosol droplets which were generated by a nebulizer and delivered to mice model of lung cancer via aerosol. To summarize, the in vivo targeting ability of GP-Av-bEGF was examined by fluorescence images obtained from live mice showed that these nanoparticles could target the cancerous lungs in a more specific manner by aerosol delivery. And gelatin nanoparticles loaded with cisplatin and decorated with EGF tumor-specific ligand (GP-PtbEGF) were also successfully developed. Their in vitro and in vivo targeting ability and anticancer effect were confirmed. This treatment showed that GP-Pt-bEGF had stronger antitumor activity and was less toxic compared with other cisplatin formulas. Furthermore, these formulations were given to mice with lung cancer via aerosol delivery and showed that inhaled GP-Pt-bEGF could target EGFR-overexpressing cells to achieve high cisplatin dosage in cancerous lungs. The aerosol delivery of nanocarriers was demonstrated here. Simple aerosol delivery of targeted drug carriers may prove useful for the clinical treatment of lung cancer patients to eliminate patient complaints associated with the frequent intravenous injection.

The purpose of this study is threefold. First, this study intends to determine the factors which affect whether or not customers complain to management when they had problems at a casual table service restaurant. Second, this study seeks to determine the factors which affect the likelihood of returning to the restaurant for customers who complained to management about their problems. Third, this study examines the factors which affect the extent of negative word-of-mouth engaged by customers who complained to management; This study confirms the importance of complaint management in restaurant business. It further suggests how restaurant managers utilize their resources to resolve customers' problems and thereby enhancing customer satisfaction. Thus, management may build a long-term relationship with customers and retain loyal customers.
