Search

The S255IR-SMA1 core contains the protostar NIRS3 with a mass of $\sim$20 M$_\odot$. Several years ago, the first burst of luminosity for massive protostars, caused by an episodic accretion event, was recorded here. We have been studying this object for a long time using various instruments, including ALMA. The general morphology and kinematics of this area have been investigated. Disk-shaped structures, jets and outflows have been identified and studied in detail. We recently observed this object with ALMA with a resolution an order of magnitude higher than previously achieved - about 15 milliarcseconds, which corresponds to about 25 AU. This paper presents new results from the analysis of these data together with observations in other bands. The new data show an inhomogeneous disk structure, an ionized region around the protostar, and the presence of a jet observed in the submillimeter continuum, consisting of individual knots, the orientation of which differs markedly from that on large scales. The submillimeter emission from the jet most likely represents bremsstrahlung from ionized gas. Based on observations of the lines of some molecules, the kinematics and physical characteristics of this region are discussed. We present line and continuum observations (resolution ~0.3"-3.5") made with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), Submillimeter Array, and Very Large Array of a young O-type protostar W42-MME (mass: 19-4 Msun). The ALMA 1.35 mm continuum map (resolution ~1") shows that W42-MME is embedded in one of the cores (i.e., MM1) located within a thermally supercritical filament-like feature (extent ~0.15 pc) containing three cores (mass ~1-4.4 Msun). Several dense/hot gas tracers are detected toward MM1, suggesting the presence of a hot molecular core with the gas temperature of ~38-220~K. The ALMA 865 micron continuum map (resolution ~0.3") reveals at least five continuum sources/peaks ("A-E") within a dusty envelope (extent ~9000 AU) toward MM1, where shocks are traced in the SiO(8-7) emission. The source "A" associated with W42-MME is seen almost at the center of the dusty envelope, and is surrounded by other continuum peaks. The ALMA CO(3-2) and SiO(8-7) line observations show the bipolar outflow extended below 10000 AU, which is driven by the source "A". The ALMA data hint the episodic ejections from W42-MME. A disk-like feature (extent ~2000 AU; mass ~1 Msun) with velocity gradients is investigated in the source "A" (dynamical mass ~9 Msun) using the ALMA H13CO+ emission, and is perpendicular to the CO outflow. A small-scale feature (below 3000 AU) probably heated by UV radiation from the O-type star is also investigated toward the source "A". In this study, we investigated the energy partition of four confined circular-ribbon flares (CRFs) near the solar disk center, which are observed simultaneously by SDO, GOES, and RHESSI. We calculated different energy components, including the radiative outputs in 1$-$8, 1$-$70, and 70$-$370 {\AA}, total radiative loss, peak thermal energy derived from GOES and RHESSI, nonthermal energy in flare-accelerated electrons, and magnetic free energy before flares. It is found that the energy components increase systematically with the flare class, indicating that more energies are involved in larger flares. The magnetic free energies are larger than the nonthermal energies and radiative outputs of flares, which is consistent with the magnetic nature of flares. The ratio $\frac{E_{nth}}{E_{mag}}$ of the four flares, being 0.70$-$0.76, is considerably higher than that of eruptive flares. Hence, this ratio may serve as an important factor that discriminates confined and eruptive flares. The nonthermal energies are sufficient to provide the heating requirements including the peak thermal energy and radiative loss. In this work, we report our multi-wavelength observations of the transverse oscillation of a large scale coronal loop with a length of 350 Mm. The oscillation was induced by a blowout coronal jet, which was related to a circular ribbon flare (CRF) in AR 12434 on 2015 October 16. We aim to determine the physical parameters in the coronal loop, including the Alfven speed and magnetic field strength. The jet induced kink oscillation was observed in extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) wavelengths by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Line of sight magnetograms were observed by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on board SDO. We took several slices along the loop to assemble time-distance diagrams, and used an exponentially decaying sine function to fit the decaying oscillation. The initial amplitude, period, and damping time of kink oscillation were obtained. Coronal seismology of the kink mode was applied to estimate the Alfven speed and magnetic field strength in the oscillating loop. In addition, we measured the magnetic field of the loop through non-linear force free field (NLFFF) modeling using the flux rope insertion method. The oscillation is most pronounced in AIA 171 and 131. The oscillation is almost in phase along the loop with a peak initial amplitude of 13.6 Mm, meaning that the oscillation belong to the fast standing kink mode. The oscillation lasts for 3.5 cycles with an average period of 462 s and average damping time of 976 s. The values of t/P lie in the range of 1.5-2.5. Based on coronal seismology, the Alfven speed in the oscillating loop is estimated to be 1210 km. Two independent methods are applied to calculate the magnetic field strength of the loop, resulting in 30043 G using the coronal seismology and 21123 G using the NLFFF modeling, respectively.

In this paper, we study in detail the evolution of a mini-sigmiod originating in a cross-equatorial coronal hole, where the magnetic field is mostly open and seriously distinct from the closed background field above active-region sigmoids. The source region first appeared as a bipole, which subsequently experienced a rapid emergence followed by a long-term decay. Correspondingly, the coronal structure initially appeared as arc-like loops, then gradually sheared and transformed into continuously sigmoidal loops, mainly owing to flux cancellation near the polarity inversion line. The temperature of J-shaped and sigmoidal loops is estimated to be about $2.0\times10^{6}$ K, greater than that of the background coronal hole. Using the flux-rope insertion method, we further reconstruct the nonlinear force-free fields that well reproduces the transformation of the potential field into a sigmoidal field. The fact that the sheared and sigmoidal loops are mainly concentrated at around the high-Q region implies that the reconnection most likely takes place there to form the sigmoidal field and heat the plasma. Moreover, the twist of sigmoidal field lines is estimated to be around 0.8, less than the values derived for the sigmoids from active regions. However, the sigmoidal flux may quickly enter an unstable regime at the very low corona ($<10\ Mm$) due to the open background field. The results suggest that the mini-sigmoid, at least the one in our study, has the same formation and eruption process as the large-scale one, but is significantly influenced by the overlying flux., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

Context. QPPs are usually detected as spatial displacements of coronal loops in imaging observations or as periodic shifts of line properties in spectroscopic observations. They are often applied for remote diagnostics of magnetic fields and plasma properties on the Sun. Aims. We combine imaging and spectroscopic measurements of available space missions, and investigate the properties of non-damping oscillations at flaring loops. Methods. We used the IRIS to measure the spectrum over a narrow slit. The double-component Gaussian fitting method was used to extract the line profile of Fe XXI 1354.08 A at "O I" window. The quasi-periodicity of loop oscillations were identified in the Fourier and wavelet spectra. Results. A periodicity at about 40 s is detected in the line properties of Fe XXI, HXR emissions in GOES 1-8 A derivative, and Fermi 26-50 keV. The Doppler velocity and line width oscillate in phase, while a phase shift of about Pi/2 is detected between the Doppler velocity and peak intensity. The amplitudes of Doppler velocity and line width oscillation are about 2.2 km/s and 1.9 km/s, respectively, while peak intensity oscillate with amplitude at about 3.6% of the background emission. Meanwhile, a quasi-period of about 155 s is identified in the Doppler velocity and peak intensity of Fe XXI, and AIA 131 A intensity. Conclusions. The oscillations at about 40 s are not damped significantly during the observation, it might be linked to the global kink modes of flaring loops. The periodicity at about 155 s is most likely a signature of recurring downflows after chromospheric evaporation along flaring loops. The magnetic field strengths of the flaring loops are estimated to be about 120-170 G using the MHD seismology diagnostics, which are consistent with the magnetic field modeling results using the flux rope insertion method., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, accepted by A&A

We describe the general structure of the well known S255IR high mass star forming region, as revealed by our recent ALMA observations. The data indicate a physical relation of the major clumps SMA1 and SMA2. The driving source of the extended high velocity well collimated bipolar outflow is not the most pronounced disk-like SMA1 clump harboring a 20 M$_\odot$ young star (S255 NIRS3), as it was assumed earlier. Apparently it is the less evolved SMA2 clump, which drives the outflow and contains a compact rotating structure (probably a disk). At the same time the SMA1 clump drives another outflow, with a larger opening angle. The molecular line data do not show an outflow from the SMA3 clump (NIRS1), which was suggested by IR studies of this region., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Aims. We aimed at investigating the structure and kinematics of the gaseous disk and outflows around the massive YSO S255 NIRS3 in the S255IR-SMA1 dense clump. Methods. Observations of the S255IR region were carried out with ALMA at two epochs in the compact and extended configurations. Results. We serendipitously detected a new, never predicted, bright maser line at about 349.1 GHz, which most probably represents the CH$_3$OH $14_{1} - 14_{0}$ A$^{- +}$ transition. The emission covers most of the 6.7 GHz methanol maser emission area of almost 1$^{\prime\prime}$ in size and shows a velocity gradient in the same sense as the disk rotation. No variability was found on the time interval of several months. In this paper, we report our multiwavelength observations of the large-amplitude longitudinal oscillations of a filament on 2015 May 3. Located next to active region 12335, the sigmoidal filament was observed by the ground-based H$\alpha$ telescopes from GONG and by AIA aboard SDO. The filament oscillations were most probably triggered by the magnetic reconnection in the filament channel. The directions of oscillations have angles of 4$^\circ$-36$^\circ$ with respect to the filament axis. The whole filament did not oscillate in phase as a rigid body. Meanwhile, the periods (3100$-$4400 s) of oscillations have a spatial dependence. The values of $R$ are estimated to be 69.4$-$133.9 Mm, and the minimum transverse magnetic field of the dips is estimated to be 15 G. The amplitudes of S5-S8 grew with time, while the amplitudes of S9-S14 damped with time. The amplitudes of oscillations range from a few to ten Mm, and the maximal velocity can reach 30 km s$^{-1}$. Interestingly, the filament experienced mass drainage southwards at a speed of $\sim$27 km s$^{-1}$. The oscillations continued after the mass drainage and lasted for more than 11 hr. After the mass drainage, the phases of oscillations did not change a lot. The periods of S5-S8 decreased, while the periods of S9-S14 increased. The amplitudes of S5$-$S8 damped with time, while the amplitudes of S9-S14 grew. Most of the damping (growing) ratios are between -9 and 14. In this paper, we focus on the pre-flare coronal dimmings. We report our multiwavelength observations of the GOES X1.6 solar flare and the accompanying halo CME produced by the eruption of a sigmoidal magnetic flux rope (MFR) in NOAA active region (AR) 12158 on 2014 September 10. The eruption was observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) aboard the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO). The photospheric line-of-sight magnetograms were observed by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) aboard SDO. The soft X-ray (SXR) fluxes were recorded by the GOES spacecraft. The halo CME was observed by the white light coronagraphs of the Large Angle Spectroscopic Coronagraph (LASCO) aboard SOHO.} {About 96 minutes before the onset of flare/CME, narrow pre-flare coronal dimmings appeared at the two ends of the twisted MFR. They extended very slowly with their intensities decreasing with time, while their apparent widths (8$-$9 Mm) nearly kept constant. During the impulsive and decay phases of flare, typical fanlike twin dimmings appeared and expanded with much larger extent and lower intensities than the pre-flare dimmings. The percentage of 171 {\AA} intensity decrease reaches 40\%. The pre-flare dimmings are most striking in 171, 193, and 211 {\AA} with formation temperatures of 0.6$-$2.5 MK. The northern part of the pre-flare dimmings could also be recognized in 131 and 335 {\AA}.} To our knowledge, this is the first detailed study of pre-flare coronal dimmings, which can be explained by the density depletion as a result of the gradual expansion of the coronal loop system surrounding the MFR during the slow rise of the MFR., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, to be accepted for publication by A&A

$Aims.$ We study the relation between the jet and the outflow in the IRAS 04166+2706 protostar. This Taurus protostar drives a molecular jet that contains multiple emission peaks symmetrically located from the central source. The protostar also drives a wide-angle outflow consisting of two conical shells. $Methods.$ We have used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) interferometer to observe two fields along the IRAS 04166+2706 jet. The fields were centered on a pair of emission peaks that correspond to the same ejection event, and were observed in CO(2-1), SiO(5-4), and SO(65-54). $ Results.$ Both ALMA fields present spatial distributions that are approximately elliptical and have their minor axes aligned with the jet direction. As the velocity increases, the emission in each field moves gradually across the elliptical region. This systematic pattern indicates that the emitting gas in each field lies in a disk-like structure that is perpendicular to the jet axis and is expanding away from the jet. A small degree of curvature in the first-moment maps indicates that the disks are slightly curved in the manner expected for bow shocks moving away from the IRAS source. A simple geometrical model confirms that this scenario fits the main emission features. $Conclusions.$ The emission peaks in the IRAS 04166+2706 jet likely represent internal bow shocks where material is being ejected laterally away from the jet axis. While the linear momentum of the ejected gas is dominated by the component in the jet direction, the sideways component is not negligible, and can potentially affect the distribution of gas in the surrounding outflow and core., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

In this paper, we report our multiwavelength observations of the C4.2 circular-ribbon flare in active region (AR) 12434 on 2015 October 16. The short-lived flare was associated with positive magnetic polarities and a negative polarity inside, as revealed by the photospheric line-of-sight magnetograms. Such magnetic pattern is strongly indicative of a magnetic null point and spine-fan configuration in the corona. The flare was triggered by the eruption of a mini-filament residing in the AR, which produced the inner flare ribbon (IFR) and the southern part of a closed circular flare ribbon (CFR). When the eruptive filament reached the null point, it triggered null point magnetic reconnection with the ambient open field and generated the bright CFR and a blowout jet. Raster observations of the \textit{Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph} (\textit{IRIS}) show plasma upflow at speed of 35$-$120 km s$^{-1}$ in the Fe {\sc xxi} 1354.09 {\AA} line ($\log T\approx7.05$) and downflow at speed of 10$-$60 km s$^{-1}$ in the Si {\sc iv} 1393.77 {\AA} line ($\log T\approx4.8$) at certain locations of the CFR and IFR during the impulsive phase of flare, indicating explosive chromospheric evaporation. Coincidence of the single HXR source at 12$-$25 keV with the IFR and calculation based on the thick-target model suggest that the explosive evaporation was most probably driven by nonthermal electrons., Comment: 9 figures, accepted for publication by ApJ

Coronal bright points (CBPs) and jets are ubiquitous small-scale brightenings that are often associated with each other. In this paper, we report our multiwavelength observations of two groups of homologous jets. The first group was observed by the EUVI aboard the behind STEREO spacecraft in 171 {\AA} and 304 {\AA} on 2014 September 10, from a location where data from the SDO could not observe. The jets (J1$-$J6) recurred for six times with intervals of 5$-$15 minutes. They originated from the same primary CBP (BP1) and propagated in the northeast direction along large-scale, closed coronal loops. Two of the jets (J3 and J6) produced sympathetic CBPs (BP2 and BP3) after reaching the remote footpoints of the loops. The time delays between the peak times of BP1 and BP2 (BP3) are 240$\pm$75 s (300$\pm75$ s). The jets were not coherent. Instead, they were composed of bright and compact blobs. The sizes and apparent velocities of the blobs are 4.5$-$9 Mm and 140$-$380 km/s, respectively. The arrival times of the multiple blobs in the jets at the far-end of the loops indicate that the sympathetic CBPs are caused by jet flows rather than thermal conduction fronts. The second group was observed by the AIA aboard SDO in various wavelengths on 2010 August 3. Similar to the first group, the jets originated from a short-lived bright point (BP) at the boundary of AR 11092 and propagated along a small-scale, closed loop before flowing into the active region. Several tiny blobs with sizes of $\sim$1.7 Mm and apparent velocity of ~238 km/s were identified in the jets. We carried out the DEM inversions to investigate the temperatures of the blobs, finding that the blobs were multithermal with average temperature of 1.8$-$3.1 MK., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication by Solar Physics

We report the results of our observations of the S255IR area with the SMA at 1.3 mm in the very extended configuration and at 0.8 mm in the compact configuration as well as with the IRAM-30m at 0.8 mm. The best achieved angular resolution is about 0.4 arcsec. The dust continuum emission and several tens of molecular spectral lines are observed. The majority of the lines is detected only towards the S255IR-SMA1 clump, which represents a rotating structure (probably disk) around the young massive star. The achieved angular resolution is still insufficient for conclusions about Keplerian or non-Keplerian character of the rotation. The temperature of the molecular gas reaches 130-180 K. The size of the clump is about 500 AU. The clump is strongly fragmented as follows from the low beam filling factor. The mass of the hot gas is significantly lower than the mass of the central star. A strong DCN emission near the center of the hot core most probably indicates a presence of a relatively cold ($\lesssim 80$ K) and rather massive clump there. High velocity emission is observed in the CO line as well as in lines of high density tracers HCN, HCO+, CS and other molecules. The outflow morphology obtained from combination of the SMA and IRAM-30m data is significantly different from that derived from the SMA data alone. The CO emission detected with the SMA traces only one boundary of the outflow. The outflow is most probably driven by jet bow shocks created by episodic ejections from the center. We detected a dense high velocity clump associated apparently with one of the bow shocks. A major goal of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is to make accurate images with resolutions of tens of milliarcseconds, which at submillimeter (submm) wavelengths requires baselines up to ~15 km. To develop and test this capability, a Long Baseline Campaign (LBC) was carried out from September to late November 2014, culminating in end-to-end observations, calibrations, and imaging of selected Science Verification (SV) targets. This paper presents an overview of the campaign and its main results, including an investigation of the short-term coherence properties and systematic phase errors over the long baselines at the ALMA site, a summary of the SV targets and observations, and recommendations for science observing strategies at long baselines. Deep ALMA images of the quasar 3C138 at 97 and 241 GHz are also compared to VLA 43 GHz results, demonstrating an agreement at a level of a few percent. As a result of the extensive program of LBC testing, the highly successful SV imaging at long baselines achieved angular resolutions as fine as 19 mas at ~350 GHz. We present the various science cases for building Band 1 receivers as part of ALMA's ongoing Development Program. We describe the new frequency range for Band 1 of 35-52 GHz, a range chosen to maximize the receiver suite's scientific impact. We first describe two key science drivers: 1) the evolution of grains in protoplanetary disks and debris disks, and 2) molecular gas in galaxies during the era of re-ionization. Studies of these topics with Band 1 receivers will significantly expand ALMA's Level 1 Science Goals. In addition, we describe a host of other exciting continuum and line science cases that require ALMA's high sensitivity and angular resolution. For example, ALMA Band 1 continuum data will probe the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect in galaxy clusters, Very Small Grains and spinning dust, ionized jets from young stars, spatial and flaring studies of Sgr A*, the acceleration sites of solar flares, pulsar wind nebulae, radio supernovae, and X-ray binaries. Furthermore, ALMA Band 1 line data will probe chemical differentiation in cloud cores, complex carbon chain molecules, extragalactic radio recombination lines, masers, magnetic fields through Zeeman effect measurements, molecular outflows from young stars, the co-evolution of star formation and active galactic nuclei, and the molecular content of galaxies at z ~ 3. ALMA provides similar to better sensitivities than the JVLA over 35-50 GHz, with differences increasing with frequency. ALMA's smaller antennas and shorter baselines, greater number of baselines, and single-dish capabilities, however, give it a significant edge for observing extended emission, making wide-field maps (mosaics), or attaining high image fidelity, as required by the described science cases., Comment: 74 pages; this document is a major revision of one posted previously as arXiv:0910.1609

The structure of the coronal magnetic field prior to eruptive processes and the conditions for the onset of eruption are important issues that can be addressed through studying the magnetohydrodynamic stability and evolution of nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) models. This paper uses data-constrained NLFFF models of a solar active region that erupted on 2010 April 8 as initial condition in MHD simulations. These models, constructed with the techniques of flux rope insertion and magnetofrictional relaxation, include a stable, an approximately marginally stable, and an unstable configuration. The simulations confirm previous related results of magnetofrictional relaxation runs, in particular that stable flux rope equilibria represent key features of the observed pre-eruption coronal structure very well and that there is a limiting value of the axial flux in the rope for the existence of stable NLFFF equilibria. The specific limiting value is located within a tighter range, due to the sharper discrimination between stability and instability by the MHD description. The MHD treatment of the eruptive configuration yields very good agreement with a number of observed features like the strongly inclined initial rise path and the close temporal association between the coronal mass ejection and the onset of flare reconnection. Minor differences occur in the velocity of flare ribbon expansion and in the further evolution of the inclination; these can be eliminated through refined simulations. We suggest that the slingshot effect of horizontally bent flux in the source region of eruptions can contribute significantly to the inclination of the rise direction. Finally, we demonstrate that the onset criterion formulated in terms of a threshold value for the axial flux in the rope corresponds very well to the threshold of the torus instability in the considered active region., Comment: V3: minor update to conform to the published article; dropped part of caption of Fig. 12 is included here

The properties of tidally induced arms provide a means to study molecular cloud formation and the subsequent star formation under environmental conditions which in principle are different from quasi stationary spiral arms. We report the properties of a newly discovered molecular gas arm of likely tidal origin at the south of NGC 4039 and the overlap region in the Antennae galaxies, with a resolution of 1"68 x 0"85, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array science verification CO(2-1) data. The arm extends 3.4 kpc (34") and is characterized by widths of ~ 200 pc (2") and velocity widths of typically \DeltaV ~ 10-20 km/s . About 10 clumps are strung out along this structure, most of them unresolved, with average surface densities of \Sigma_gas ~ 10-100 Msun pc^{-2}, and masses of (1-8) x 10^6 Msun. These structures resemble the morphology of beads on a string, with an almost equidistant separation between the beads of about 350 pc, which may represent a characteristic separation scale for giant molecular associations. We find that the star formation efficiency at a resolution of 6" (600 pc) is in general a factor of 10 higher than in disk galaxies and other tidal arms and bridges. This arm is linked, based on the distribution and kinematics, to the base of the western spiral arm of NGC 4039, but its morphology is different to that predicted by high-resolution simulations of the Antennae galaxies., Comment: Accepted in ApJL, 8 pages, 5 figures

We present observational data for two main components (S255IR and S255N) of the S255 high mass star forming region in continuum and molecular lines obtained at 1.3 mm and 1.1 mm with the SMA, at 1.3 cm with the VLA and at 23 and 50 cm with the GMRT. The angular resolution was from ~ 2" to ~ 5" for all instruments. With the SMA we detected a total of about 50 spectral lines of 20 different molecules (including isotopologues). About half of the lines and half of the species (in particular N2H+, SiO, C34S, DCN, DNC, DCO+, HC3N, H2CO, H2CS, SO2) have not been previously reported in S255IR and partly in S255N at high angular resolution. Our data reveal several new clumps in the S255IR and S255N areas by their millimeter wave continuum emission. Masses of these clumps are estimated at a few solar masses. The line widths greatly exceed expected thermal widths. These clumps have practically no association with NIR or radio continuum sources, implying a very early stage of evolution. At the same time, our SiO data indicate the presence of high-velocity outflows related to some of these clumps. In some cases, strong molecular emission at velocities of the quiescent gas has no detectable counterpart in the continuum. We discuss the main features of the distribution of NH3, N2H+, and deuterated molecules. We present sensitive high angular resolution ($\sim$ 1$"$) millimeter continuum and line observations from the massive star forming region DR21(OH) located in the Cygnus X molecular cloud. Within the well-known dusty MM1-2 molecular cores, we report the detection of a new cluster of about ten compact continuum millimeter sources with masses between 5 and 24 M$_\odot$, and sizes of a few thousands of astronomical units. These objects are likely to be large dusty envelopes surrounding massive protostars, some of them most probably driving several of the outflows that emanate from this region. Additionally, we report the detection of strong millimeter emission of formaldehyde (H$_2$CO) and methanol (CH$_3$OH) near 218 GHz as well as compact emission from the typical outflow tracers carbon monoxide and silicon monoxide (CO and SiO) toward this massive star-forming region. The H$_2$CO and CH$_3$OH emission is luminous ($\sim$ 10$^{-4}$ L$_{\odot}$), well resolved, and found along the collimated methanol maser outflow first identified at centimeter wavelengths and in the sources SMA6 and SMA7. Our observations suggest that this maser outflow might be energized by a millimeter source called SMA4 located in the MM2 dusty core. The CO and SiO emission traces some other collimated outflows that emanate from MM1-2 cores, and are not related with the low velocity maser outflow., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We present observations of CH3CN (12-11) emission at a resolution of 2" toward the shell-like ultracompact HII region G5.89-0.39 with the Submillimeter Array. The integrated CH3CN emission reveals dense and hot molecular cocoon in the periphery of the HII region G5.89-0.39, with a CH3CN deficient region roughly centered at G5.89-0.39. By analyzing the CH3CN emission using population diagram analysis, we find, for the first time, a decreasing temperature structure from 150 to 40 K with the projected distance from Feldt's star, which is thought to be responsible for powering the HII region. Our results further indicate that the majority of the heating energy in the observed dense gas is supplied by the Feldt's star. From the derived CH3CN column density profile, we conclude that the dense gas is not uniformly-distributed but centrally-concentrated, with a power-law exponent of 5.5 for r < 8000 AU, and 2.0 for 8000 AU < r < 20000 AU, where r is the distance to Feldt's star. The estimated large power index of 5.5 can be attributed to an enhancement of CH3CN abundance in the close vicinity of Feldt's star., Comment: accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present studies of a massive protocluster AFGL5142 in the J=2-1 transition of the CO isotopologues, SO, CH_3OH and CH_3CN lines, as well as continuum at 225 GHz and 8.4 GHz. The 225 GHz continuum emission reveals three prominent peaks MM-1, MM-2 and MM-3. MM-1 and MM-2 are associated with strong CH_3CN emission with temperatures of 90 \pm 20 and 250 \pm 40 K, respectively, while both MM-1 and MM-3 are associated with faint continuum emission at 8.4 GHz. Additional dust continuum peaks MM-4 and MM-5 appear to be associated with \h2O masers. With many continuum sources at cm and mm wavelengths, and those already identified in the infrared, this region is forming a cluster of stars. The CO and SO emission reveals at least three molecular outflows originating from the center of the dust core. The outflows are well collimated, with terminal velocities up to 50 \kms-1 from the cloud velocity. Outflow A coincides with the SiO jet identified previously by Hunter et al. (1999). Since jet-like outflows and disk-mediated accretion process are physically connected, the well collimated outflows indicate that even in this cluster environment, accretion is responsible for the formation of individual stars in the cluster., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of the high-mass star-forming region IRAS 18089-1732 in the 1 mm and 850 $\mu$m band with 1 GHz bandwidth reveal a wealth of information. We present the observations of 34 lines from 16 different molecular species. Most molecular line maps show significant contributions from the outflow, and only few molecules are confined to the inner core. We present initial results of an ongoing search for interferometric calibrators at submillimeter (sub-mm) wavelengths with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). Powerful radio galaxies are commonly used as calibrators at centimeter and millimeter wavelengths, but many are not strong enough to serve as calibrators at sub-mm wavelengths because of their rapidly declining flux densities toward shorter wavelengths. The inability to find a calibrator close to the target source may limit or even prevent us from imaging many interesting sources at sub-mm wavelengths. Here, we investigate whether high-mass protostellar objects and ultracompact HII regions can serve as useful calibrators for the SMA. The dust emission associated with these objects makes them among the brightest sub-mm sources in the sky. Our observations at 0.85 mm (345 GHz) with an angular resolution of ~3" reveal that although a large fraction of the dust emission originates from an extended ``halo'' component, a compact unresolved component often remains that when sufficiently strong may serve as a useful calibrator. These observations also provide a first glimpse at the small-scale distribution of dust around ultracompact HII regions and high-mass protostellar objects at sub-mm wavelengths. We have mapped the ultracompact HII region, G5.89-0.39, and its molecular surroundings with the Submillimeter Array at 2".8 x 1".8 angular resolution in 1.3 mm continuum, SiO(5-4), and eight other molecular lines. We have resolved for the first time the highly energetic molecular outflow in this region. At this resolution, the outflow is definitely bipolar and appears to originate in a 1.3 mm continuum source. SMA observations of the massive star-forming region IRAS 18089-1732 in the 1mm and 850mu band reveal outflow and disk signatures in different molecular lines. The SiO(5--4) data show a collimated outflow in the northern direction. In contrast, the HCOOCH3(20--19) line, which traces high-density gas, is confined to the very center of the region and shows a velocity gradient across the core. The HCOOCH3 velocity gradient is not exactly perpendicular to the outflow axis but between an assumed disk plane and the outflow axis. We interpret these HCOOCH3 features as originating from a rotating disk that is influenced by the outflow and infall. Based on the (sub-)mm continuum emission, the mass of the central core is estimated to be around 38M_sun. The dynamical mass derived from the HCOOCH3 data is 22Msun, of about the same order as the core mass. Thus, the mass of the protostar/disk/envelope system is dominated by its disk and envelope. The two frequency continuum data of the core indicate a low dust opacity index beta ~ 1.2 in the outer part, decreasing to beta ~ 0.5 on shorter spatial scales., Comment: 7 pages of text, 1 table, 3 figures, accepted for ApJ Letters
