To improve occupant comfort and save energy in buildings, we have developed a closed-loop air conditioning (AC) sensor-controller that predicts occupant thermal sensation from the thermographic measurement of skin temperature distribution, then uses this information to reduce overcooling (cooling-energy overuse that discomforts occupants) by regulating AC output. Taking measures to protect privacy, it combines thermal-infrared (TIR) and color (visible spectrum) cameras with machine vision to measure the skin-surface temperature profile. Since the human thermoregulation system uses skin blood flow to maintain thermoneutrality, the distribution of skin temperature can be used to predict warm, neutral, and cool thermal states. We conducted a series of human-subject thermal-sensation trials in cold-to-hot environments, measuring skin temperatures and recording thermal sensation votes. We then trained random-forest classification machine-learning models (classifiers) to estimate thermal sensation from skin temperatures or skin-temperature differences. The estimated thermal sensation was input to a proportional integral (PI) control algorithm for the AC, targeting a sensation level between neutral and warm. Our sensor-controller includes a sensor assembly, server software, and client software. The server software orients the cameras and transmits images to the client software, which in turn assesses occupant skin temperature distribution, estimates occupant thermal sensation, and controls AC operation. A demonstration conducted in a conference room in an office building near Houston, TX showed that our system reduced overcooling, decreasing AC load by 42% when the room was occupied while improving occupant comfort (fraction of “comfortable” votes) by 15 percentage points.

ObjectiveEicosanoids modulate inflammation via complex networks involving different pathways and downstream mediators, including oxylipins. Although altered eicosanoids are linked to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), suggesting that metabolization is enhanced, the role of oxylipins in disease stratification remains unexplored. This study was undertaken to characterize oxylipin networks during the earliest stages of RA and evaluate their associations with clinical features and treatment outcomes.MethodsIn total, 60 patients with early RA (according to the American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism 2010 criteria), 11 individuals with clinically suspect arthralgia (CSA), and 28 healthy control subjects were recruited. Serum samples were collected at the time of onset. In the early RA group, 50 patients who had not been exposed to disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) or glucocorticoid treatment at the time of recruitment were prospectively followed up at 6 and 12 months after having received conventional synthetic DMARDs. A total of 75 oxylipins, mostly derived from arachidonic, eicosapentanoic, and linoleic acids, were identified in the serum by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry.ResultsUnivariate analyses demonstrated differences in expression patterns of 14 oxylipins across the RA, CSA, and healthy control groups, with each exhibiting a different trajectory. Network analyses revealed a strong grouping pattern of oxylipins in RA patients, whereas in individuals with CSA, a fuzzy network of oxylipins with higher degree and closeness was found. Partial least-squares discriminant analyses yielded variable important projection scores of >1 for 22 oxylipins, which allowed the identification of 2 clusters. Cluster usage differed among the groups (P = 0.003), and showed associations with disease severity and low rates of remission at 6 and 12 months in RA patients who were initially treatment-naive. Pathway enrichment analyses revealed different precursors and pathways between the groups, highlighting the relevance of the arachidonic acid pathway in individuals with CSA and the lipooxygenase pathway in patients with early RA. In applying distinct oxylipin signatures, subsets of seropositive and seronegative RA could be identified.ConclusionOxylipin networks differ across stages during the earliest phases of RA. These distinct oxylipin networks could potentially elucidate pathways with clinical relevance for disease progression, clinical heterogeneity, and treatment response.

Background: The coastal habitats in the southern Gulf of Mexico face multiple threats, such as rising water temperatures, acidification, increased turbidity, invasive species and pollutants. This imperils the biodiversity of beaches, wetlands and coral reefs. To address this, there is a need for comprehensive baseline information on marine biodiversity. Several reefs in the Gulf of Mexico have been extensively studied, yet smaller reefs on the Yucatan continental shelf lack thorough exploration despite their ecological significance. These reefs serve as crucial biodiversity hotspots influenced by environmental characteristics, receiving diverse taxa from the Gulf of Mexico. The macroalgae study at the Bank of Campeche dates back to the 1950s, but comprehensive investigations have been sporadic. The recent study aims to fill this gap, contributing to the taxonomic inventory of the area's benthic macroflora. Methodologically, extensive sampling across eight reefs was conducted, collecting and preserving macroalgae samples for identification in the laboratory. The study documented 90 infrageneric taxa across the reefs, with Cayo Arenas exhibiting the highest species count. Additionally, three new distribution reports for Mexico were identified in the region. The distribution of species varied amongst locations, with few species in common even amongst geographically proximate reefs. The diversity found in these reefs slightly trails behind other studied regions, but surpasses previous reports for the Campeche Bank. It is important to emphasise that the significance of this study lies in its focus on remote reefs with complicated and costly access logistics. Additionally, it is one of the first publicly available datasets published for this region. The study aligns with existing literature on prevalent families in reef environments and highlights differences in species distribution, based on depth variations amongst reefs. The findings of new distribution records in the region and the distinctiveness of localities despite their proximity underscore the unique ecological dynamics of these reefs. New information: These reefs are located in remote and difficult-to-access areas, highlighting the importance of the data obtained on their biodiversity and conservation status. This work presents for the first time a list of macroalgae for the reefs of Banco Nuevo, Banco Obispo, Banco Pera and Serpientes Reef. Three new distribution reports for Yucatan were identified at the Banco Obispo reef: Botryocladia shanksii E. Y. Dawson, Ceratodictyon scoparium (Montagne & Millardet) R. E. Norris and Asteromenia peltata (W. R. Taylor) Huisman & Millar and a new report for the Mexican Atlantic, Herposiphonia parca Setchell at the Triángulo Oeste reef. This results in distinct algal communities compared to other reefs in the region, emphasising their ecological significance and the need for continued research and conservation efforts. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the main endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age worldwide. This condition is often associated with various metabolic alterations that contribute to the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Recent research suggests that branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) dysregulation is observed in PCOS. This study aims to investigate the relationship between dietary patterns, body composition, metabolic analytes, and serum amino acid levels in Mexican women with PCOS. Utilizing a cross-sectional design, we found that both study groups, PCOS (n = 24) and PCOS + MetS (n = 21), exhibited increased relative fat mass and dietary habits characterized by high simple sugar intake and low protein consumption, correlating with levels of relative fat mass and leptin. Notably, serum concentrations of BCAAs and glutamic acid were significantly elevated in the PCOS + MetS group. Our findings suggest that a metabolic approach may enhance the prediction and management of MetS in women with PCOS, highlighting the importance of dietary interventions in this population.
