Abstract

Drilling for the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) Early Jurassic Earth System and Timescale project (JET) was undertaken between October 2020 and January 2021. The drill site is situated in a small-scale synformal basin of the latest Triassic to Early Jurassic age that formed above the major Permian-Triassic half-graben system of the Cheshire Basin. The borehole is located to recover an expanded and complete succession to complement the legacy core from the Llanbedr (Mochras Farm) borehole drilled through 1967-1969 on the edge of the Cardigan Bay Basin, North Wales. The overall aim of the project is to construct an astronomically calibrated integrated timescale for the Early Jurassic and to provide insights into the operation of the Early Jurassic Earth system. Core of Quaternary age cover and Early Jurassic mudstone was obtained from two shallow partially cored geotechnical holes (Prees 2A to 32.2g¯m below surface (mg¯b.s.) and Prees 2B to 37.0g¯mg¯b.s.) together with Early Jurassic and Late Triassic mudstone from the principal hole, Prees 2C, which was cored from 32.92 to 651.32g¯m (corrected core depth scale). Core recovery was 99.7g¯% for Prees 2C. The ages of the recovered stratigraphy range from the Late Triassic (probably Rhaetian) to the Early Jurassic, Early Pliensbachian (Ibex Ammonoid Chronozone). All ammonoid chronozones have been identified for the drilled Early Jurassic strata. The full lithological succession comprises the Branscombe Mudstone and Blue Anchor formations of the Mercia Mudstone Group, the Westbury and Lilstock formations of the Penarth Group, and the Redcar Mudstone Formation of the Lias Group. A distinct interval of siltstone is recognized within the Late Sinemurian of the Redcar Mudstone Formation, and the name "Prees Siltstone Member"is proposed. Mesozoic strata record numerous negative and positive carbon isotope excursions (CIE). The Middle Jurassic records a negative ~0.5‰ CIE at the Aalenian-Bajocian boundary followed by a positive ~1.5‰ CIE covering the entire early Bajocian. Abstract

International audience; Among marine reptiles of the Mesozoic, ichthyosaurs exemplify a typical case of morphologicaladaptation toward a pelagic lifestyle. Beside their extensive stratigraphic range, spanning the earlyTriassic to mid-Cretaceous interval, they are noteworthy for having achieved gigantic (up to 21 m totallength) body sizes during the first third of their evolutionary history. Such sizes were never paralleledin subsequent ichthyosaur lineages. The presence of such giants, belonging to Shastasauridae andCymbospondylidae, is now well attested from the North American fossil record, especially prior to theNorian (e.g. Nicholls and Manabe, 2004; Scheyer et al., 2014; Sander et al., 2021). Although alreadyrecorded from Asia by limited material such as Himalayasaurus (Motani et al., 1999), the Europeanrecord also begins to unveil giant forms of younger stratigraphic age (Fischer et al., 2014; Martin et al.2015; Lomax et al., 2018; Sander et al., 2022). Yet, despite their giant size, the European record islimited to a handful of partial skeletal elements. Here, we report new postcranial material belonging toa giant shastasaurid from the Rhaetian of Var, southern France. We recount the logistical attempts atretrieving skeletal elements of a single individual cropping out from the middle of a cliff since 2015.The elements recovered so far are referred to Shonisaurus sp. on the basis of vertebral morphology.Although challenging in its extraction, such specimen holds promises for questioning the ecologicalrole of giant ichthyosaurs and the reason of their extinction at the end of the Triassic.Fischer, V., Cappetta, H., Vincent, P., Garcia, G., Goolaerts, S., Martin, J. International audience; Introduction Marl-limestone alternations are well known rhyth-mical inter-bedded deposits that commonly occur inmany hemipelagic to pelagic deposits of the Phanerozoic. It is quite well established that the origin of these lithological variations are astronomically-driven climatic variations (22, 41, 100 and 405 ka being the main periods) e.g. [1]. However, the exact sedimentological control is not clear: several models attribute these alternations to cyclic changes in the carbonate flux, whereas the terrigenous silicoclastic flux remained relatively constant. On the opposite, some models suggest that the carbonate flux was constant while the silicoclastic flux changed cyclically. Material and methods To disentangle these different scenarios, we collected marlstone and limestone samples from two sedimentary succession of Bajocian (3 marl-limestone couplets over 3.5 m) and Valanginian (1 marl-limestone couplet over 1 m) age from the Southern French Alps (Barles). We analyzed their carbonate contents as well as their extraterrestrial 3He (3HeET) concentrations in ~200 mg decarbonated aliquots. Results and discussion The carbonate content ranges from 45% in marls to 86% in limestones. Importantly, for all samples, measured 3HeET concentrations are constant in the silicoclastic fractions, within uncertainties. Hence, our results indicate that sedimentation rates at the astronomical timescale in the examined examples were mainly controlled by large changes in the CaCO3 fluxes, leading to variable dilution of the terrigenous and 3HeET fractions. Finally, assuming a constant 3HeET flux of 0.1 pcc/cm2/ka [2], and the whole thickness of Bajocian and Valanginan strata in this region, the measured 3HeET concentrations imply sedimentation rates that are broadly compatible with current duration estimates of these two stages.
