Abstract Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) are an emerging technology that can be used both in place of and in conjunction with conventional simulation methods. In this paper, we used PINNs to perform a forward simulation without leveraging known data. Our simulation was of a 2D natural convection-driven cavity using the vorticity-stream function formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations. We used both 2D simulations across the x and z domains at constant Rayleigh (Ra) numbers and 3D simulations across the x, z and Ra domains. The 3D simulation was tested for a PINN’s ability to learn solutions in a higher-dimensional space than standard simulations. The results were validated against published solutions at Ra values of 10 $$^{3}$$ 3 , 10 $$^{4}$$ 4 , 10 $$^{5}$$ 5 , and 10 $$^{6}$$ 6 . Both the 2D simulations and 3D simulations successfully matched the expected results. For the 2D cases, more training iterations were needed for the model to converge at higher Ra values (10 $$^5$$ 5 and 10 $$^6$$ 6 ) than at lower Ra (10 $$^3$$ 3 and 10 $$^4$$ 4 ) indicating increased nonlinear fluid-thermal coupling. The 3D case was also able to converge but, but it required more training than any of the 2D cases due to the curse of dimensionality. These results showed the validity of standard simulations via PINNs and the feasibility of higher-order parameter space solutions that are not possible using conventional methods. They also showcased the additional computational demand associated with increasing the dimensionality of the learned parameter space.

We report the inactivation of SARS CoV-2 and its surrogate—Human coronavirus OC43 (HCoV-OC43), on representative porous (KN95 mask material) and nonporous materials (aluminum and polycarbonate) using a Compact Portable Plasma Reactor (CPPR). The CPPR is a compact (48 cm3), lightweight, portable and scalable device that forms Dielectric Barrier Discharge which generates ozone using surrounding atmosphere as input gas, eliminating the need of source gas tanks. Iterative CPPR exposure time experiments were performed on inoculated material samples in 3 operating volumes. Minimum CPPR exposure times of 5–15 min resulted in 4–5 log reduction of SARS CoV-2 and its surrogate on representative material samples. Ozone concentration and CPPR energy requirements for virus inactivation are documented. Difference in disinfection requirements in porous and non-porous material samples is discussed along with initial scaling studies using the CPPR in 3 operating volumes. The results of this feasibility study, along with existing literature on ozone and CPPR decontamination, show the potential of the CPPR as a powerful technology to reduce fomite transmission of enveloped respiratory virus-induced infectious diseases such as COVID-19. The CPPR can overcome limitations of high temperatures, long exposure times, bulky equipment, and toxic residuals related to conventional decontamination technologies.

Abstract This paper presents a proof-of-concept study establishing effectiveness of the Active Plasma Sterilizer (APS) for decontamination in planetary protection. The APS uses Compact Portable Plasma Reactors (CPPRs) to produce surface dielectric barrier discharge, a type of cold plasma, using ambient air to generate and distribute reactive species like ozone used for decontamination. Decontamination tests were performed with pathogenic bacteria (Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis) on materials (Aluminum, Polycarbonate, Kevlar and Orthofabric) relevant to space missions. Results show that the APS can achieve 4 to 5 log reductions of pathogenic bacteria on four selected materials, simultaneously at 11 points within 30 min, using power of 13.2 ± 2.22 W. Spatial decontamination data shows the APS can uniformly sterilize several areas of a contaminated surface within 30 min. Ozone penetration through Kevlar and Orthofabric layers was achieved using the CPPR with no external agent assisting penetration. Preliminary material compatibility tests with SEM analysis of the APS exposed materials showed no significant material damage. Thus, this study shows the potential of the APS as a light-weight sustainable decontamination technology for planetary protection with advantages of uniform spatial decontamination, low processing temperatures, low exposure times, material compatibility and the ability to disinfect porous surfaces.

Objectives: Observing the serological cross-reactivity between SARS-CoV-2 and dengue virus (DV), we aimed to elucidate its effect on dengue serodiagnosis and infectivity in a highly dengue-endemic city in India. Methods: A total of 52 COVID-19 (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction [RT-PCR] positive) serum samples were tested in rapid lateral flow immunoassays and DV immunoglobulin G (IgG) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect DV or SARS-CoV-2 IgG/immunoglobulin M. The COVID-19 antibody (Ab) positive samples were subjected to a virus neutralization test (Huh7 cells) using DV type 1 (DV1) clinical isolate. Results: Most (93%) of the SARS-CoV-2 Ab-positive serum samples cross-reacted with DV in rapid or ELISA tests. All were DV RNA and nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) antigen-negative. COVID-19 serum samples that were DV cross-reactive neutralized DV1. Of these, 57% had no evidence of DV pre-exposure (DV NS1 Ab-negative). The computational study also supported potential interactions between SARS-CoV-2 Ab and DV1. Conclusion: DV serodiagnosis will be inconclusive in areas co-endemic for both viruses. The COVID-19 pandemic appears to impart a protective response against DV in DV-endemic populations.

Keeping in mind the notion of random walk and market efficiency, the present study gives importance on the sense of the above issues by considering high frequency logarithmic intraday time series data of the popular Indian stock market index NIFTY 50 during the global Covid-19 pandemic. Thus, to realize the above notion deeply, the study uses parametric and non-parametric statistical approaches. The study reports that the null hypothesis of random walk is rejected based on various measures and the NIFTY 50 is inefficient in its weak form during the pandemic period. However, there is a little hope also because runs test accepts the null hypothesis that means NIFTY 50 follows random walk and informationally efficient in its weak form during the global pandemic. It may also be opined that testing of random walk and market efficiency largely depends on methodological innovation.

Abstract Herpes simplex virus (HSV) usually produces cytopathic effect (CPE) within 24-72 h post-infection (P.I.). Clinical isolates from recurrent HSV infections in patients on Acyclovir therapy were collected between 2016 and 2019 and tested in cell cultures for cytopathic effects and further in-depth characterization. Fourteen such isolates did not show any CPE in A549 or Vero cell lines even at 120 h P.I. However, these cultures remained positive for HSV-DNA after several passages. Sequence analysis revealed that the non-CPE isolates were all HSV-1. Analysis of the thymidine kinase gene from the isolates revealed several previously reported and two novel ACV-resistant mutations. Immunofluorescence and Western blot data revealed a low-level expression of the immediate early protein, ICP4. Late proteins like ICP5 or capsid protein, VP16 were almost undetectable in these isolates. AFM imaging revealed that the non-CPE viruses had structural deformities compared to wild-type HSV-1. Our findings suggest that these strains are manifesting an unusual phenomenon of being non-CPE herpesviruses with low level of virus protein expressions over several passages. Probably these HSV-1 isolates are evolving towards a more “cryptic” form to establish chronic infection in the host thereby unraveling yet another strategy of herpesviruses to evade the host immune system.

Abstract Estimating rock-mechanical, petrophysical properties and pre-production stress state is essential for effective reservoir planning, development, and optimal exploitation. This paper attempts to construct a comprehensive one-dimensional mechanical earth model (1D MEM) of the Mandapeta gas reservoir of Krishna Godavari (KG) basin, India. The methodology comprises a detailed stepwise process from processing and analysis of raw log data, calibration of log-derived dynamic properties with static ones using regression models developed from tested core samples, and final rock mechanical property estimation. Pore pressure profiles have been estimated and calibrated with the Repeat formation tester (RFT) data for every thirty-five wells. Overburden and horizontal stresses have also been evaluated and calibrated using data from the Leak-off Tests (LOT) or Extended Leak-off Tests (XLOT). A menu-driven program is developed using PYTHON code for visualization and on-time revision of 1D MEM. The resulting comprehensive 1D MEM predicts and establishes the rock-mechanical properties, pore pressure, and in-situ stress values of the basin. Besides its use in planning future wells, development of the field, and yielding insight into the various well challenges, it can also be used to develop a 3D MEM of the reservoir.

Abstract Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) based ozone therapy is an attractive non-thermal, additive-free and environment-friendly alternative to traditional food processing technologies. Its practical application is dependent on economical ozone generation and optimum ozone dosage. This study investigates the one-time and periodic application of a compact (48 cu. cm), lightweight (55 g), low power, low temperature, DBD ozone generator for treatment of spoilage inocula prepared from combinations of spoiled green beans, grape tomatoes, lettuce and strawberries. A one-time exposure of 126–136 ppm of average ozone concentration produced by the DBD generator over 3 min and 15 min resulted in at least 1 and 4 log reduction, respectively, in microbial colonies present in the spoilage inocula. Daily exposure of 128.7 ppm average ozone concentration over 3 min under similar conditions showed that inhibition through periodic exposure can successfully inhibit the growth of both bacteria and mold species with at least 5 log reduction of microbial colonies. Visual inspection of whole fruits and vegetables with similar 3-min daily exposure showed the potential of ozone therapy to at least double the shelf-life of food products. For the daily exposures, energy required by the DBD ozone generator was calculated as 0.39 $$\pm $$ ± 0.06 kJ/day.

The long-distance travel (LDT) mode choice modeling is important for transportation planners. This study investigated alternative mode choice behavior for the LDT between the intercity buses and trains. A questionnaire survey, consisting of important mode choice attributes, was conducted on various groups of people in Bangladesh. Numerous travel mode choice contributing features (e.g., travel time, travel costs, origin-destination, comfort, safety, travel time reliability, ticket availability and schedule flexibility) were considered and the LDT mode choice models were developed using various machine learning algorithms typically applied for classification problems. With 95.31 % accuracy and 0.95 F1-score, Random Forest model was the best performing model for the dataset. According to the findings of this study, the intercity bus is preferred over the intercity train for LDT in Bangladesh.

This paper seeks to examine the RWH, return characteristics and various asymmetric effects of the daily returns of the DJSI (SRI) indices during pre-recession, recession, postrecession and the whole periods (December 1998 to March 2015). To achieve these objectives RWM, ARCH, GARCH, EGARCH and TARCH models are applied along with these various tests are done. ARCH measure confirms about the presence of volatility clustering. According to GARCH measure significant asymmetric shocks and persistence of conditional volatilities present in the daily returns of the SRI indices during the entire sub periods as well as the whole period. According to the EGARCH measure shows that the returns of the SRI indices are free from leverage effects except for DJSI Korea index where leverage effect exists during the recession period. For volatility forecasting not a single measure is appropriate based on various criterions (RMSE, MAE & MAPE). Only GARCH measure is appropriate during the post-recession period. It is also found that the standardised residuals are i.i.d. Finally, the returns of the SRI indices follow RWH that means the indices are informationally efficient in their weak forms and no one can predict the SRI stock price movements and earn abnormal profits by technical analysis.

The world is going through the scourge of the COVID-19 pandemic since January 2020. However, the pandemic appears to be less severe in highly dengue endemic countries. In this connection, several studies reported that sero-diagnostic tests for dengue virus (DV) yielded considerable false-positive results for SARS-CoV-2 and vice versa in dengue endemic regions, thereby indicating towards potential cross-reactivity between these two viruses. We anticipated that SARS-CoV-2 and DV might share antigenic similarity and performed computational docking studies to test this hypothesis. Our results predicted with high confidence that human DV antibodies can indeed, bind to RBD of SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein. Some of these interactions can also potentially intercept human ACE2 receptor binding to RBM. Dengue serum samples predating the COVID-19, had been found to cross-react with SARS-CoV-2 Spike and this provides direct experimental validation of our predictions. Our analysis also showed that m396 and 80R antibodies (against SARS-CoV-1) did not dock with RBM of SARS-CoV-2, a fact already proven experimentally. This confirmed reliability and robustness of our approach. So, it is highly probable that immunological memory/antibodies to DV in endemic countries may reduce the severity and spread of COVID-19. It is not known whether SARS-CoV-2 antibodies will hinder DV infections by binding to DV particles and reduce dengue incidences in the future or, augment DV infection and severity by deploying antibody-dependent enhancement.

This study introduces spatially targeted decontamination using a synergistic combination of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) flow actuation and ozone generation. Here, we relate the spatial distribution of local microbial decontaminations in an enclosure to that of local ozone concentrations caused by DBD ozone generation and flow actuation using two reactors with contrasting flow actuation, the Fan and Comb reactors, run at equal power of 1 ± 0.03 W for 3.5 min. Deviations in ozone concentrations and reductions of Escherichia coli on contaminated coupons over two planes were used to quantify the utilization capacity of the generated ozone to simultaneously disinfect regions of a surface placed in the planes. Results show that uniform ozone consumption by a contaminated target, i.e., targeted decontamination, lowers ozone requirements, exposure times, and reactor energy consumption for its disinfection. Furthermore, a significant positive correlation was found between local decontamination and ozone concentrations with Pearson’s correlation, ρ (34) = 0.64; p < 0.001. Simulated ozone distribution using an experiment integrated simulation method, governed by DBD reactor geometry induced flow actuation and ozone reaction rates, is also presented for predicting DBD actuated spatial decontamination distribution. Our study shows an innovative approach of applying DBD plasma reactors for decontamination using flow actuation and ozone generation to achieve targeted killing with maximized ozone utilization lowering overall ozone dosage requirements, energy requirements, and exposure times.

We introduce a mechanism of using collocated serpentine shaped plasma actuators for controlling the flow via an input electrical signal to either advance or delay transition by amplification or annihilation of energetic modes of turbulent structures. A wall resolved implicit large eddy simulation is conducted to examine the process of turbulent flow control due to this mechanism. Collocation allows for selective superposition of different energetic modes, which can either subtract or add energy to the baseline flow resulting in turbulent streak manipulation. Unlike most flow control methods that use either a localized large amplitude forcing or a low amplitude distributed forcing, this mechanism uses a localized low amplitude forcing to cause reduction in skin friction of more than 53% across the plate. This is achieved by manipulating strength as well as the spacing between the low-speed turbulent streaks, which are ubiquitous in a turbulent flow field. Reduction in skin friction drag can result in decreasing fuel consumption and in turn reducing pollution.

The present study seeks to examine the impact of foreign trade policy on economic growth and thus, annual data regarding export, import and GDP are collected from the annual report of the Reserve Bank of India (RB) over a period from 1970 to 2018 and crossed checked with the data posted on the official website of the RBI. Johansen co-integration test is applied to measure the long run relationship between the variables and the short run dynamic is examined by VECM. Here, dummy variable is used to examine the impact of new economic policy on economic growth for foreign trade policy and it is evident that adoption of NEP in 1991 has positive impact on Indian economic development and it is influential for foreign trade policy.

Marginal tissue recession (MTR) by definition is an apical shift of gingival margin, which leads to exposure of root surface. Patients affected with MTR often complain of sensitivity to cold on exposed root surfaces apart from esthetic concerns. In this article, a case of multiple Miller's class I MTR who presented with sensitivity to cold in relation to maxillary anterior teeth region was treated using Zucchelli's coronally advanced flap with pericardium membrane under operating microscope. The application of principles of periodontal microsurgery and guided tissue regeneration results in significant root coverage with reduction/elimination of sensitivity. Long-term success of root coverage procedures depends on the removal of etiology and maintenance therapy.

Enterococci and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) are among the menacing bacterial pathogens. Novel antibiotics are urgently needed to tackle these antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. This article reports the design, synthesis, and antimicrobial studies of 30 novel pyrazole derivatives. Most of the synthesized compounds are potent growth inhibitors of planktonic Gram-positive bacteria with minimum inhibitory concertation (MIC) values as low as 0.25 µg/mL. Further studies led to the discovery of several lead compounds, which are bactericidal and potent against MRSA persisters. Compounds 11, 28, and 29 are potent against S. aureus biofilms with minimum biofilm eradication concentration (MBEC) values as low as 1 µg/mL.

Abstract We report the experimental characterization of ozone generation in dielectric barrier discharges as a function of the material and characteristics of the dielectric barrier, operating frequency and the power consumed by a surface DBD-plasma reactor in air at atmospheric pressure. To identify the effect of the dielectric barrier, ozone production curves corresponding to ten dielectric barriers with different effective thicknesses and thermal properties are compared and analyzed for two combinations of voltage amplitudes and frequencies: 7 kV/10 kHz and 8.5 kV/14 kHz. The influence of the operating frequency over the ozone generated by a DBD-plasma reactor is studied by varying the frequency in the range 8–20 kHz. The correlation between power measurements and ozone concentrations as well as ozone quenching effects at extreme power conditions are also discussed.

Background: The etiopathogenesis of Pityriasis rosea (PR), a papulo-squamous skin disease, remains elusive and hypothesized to be caused primarily by human herpesvirus (HHV) 6 or 7 or immune dysfunction. Aims: The recent increasing incidences of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections, including asymptomatic occult HBV infections (OBIs), in a densely populated city in India, prompted us to investigate whether PR patients (from varied socioeconomic and immune status) harbor the underlying HBV infections. These cases were also investigated for HHV 6 and 7 infections. Materials and Methods: DNA from ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid blood samples from PR-diagnosed individuals (n = 13; mostly young adults) and healthy controls (n = 11) were subjected to virus gene-specific polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) for HBV and HHV 6 and 7. PCR products of expected length, when observed, were sequenced (bidirectional) using overlapping primers. Sequences were identified by NCBI BLAST and analyzed by multiple sequence alignment and phylogenetic studies. The blood samples were tested for HBsAg by EIA. Results: In 5/13 PR samples, only HBV DNA (4/5 being HBsAg negative) was detected, providing first-time evidence that PR may be manifested in asymptomatic HBV carriers. 6/13 cases were HHV 7 (not HHV 6) DNA positive, providing confirmatory molecular genetic evidence for the first time of PR association with HHV 7 from India. Surprisingly, 5/6 HHV 7-positive PR cases were also HBV positive. Overall, 10/13 PR samples showed evidence of HBV infection. 8/13 were OBI, harboring at least one OBI-signature S protein mutation. All healthy controls were HBsAg EIA and PCR negative. Conclusions: 77% of PR patients presented the evidence of underlying HBV infection (genotype D2), suggestive of horizontal HBV transmission. This warrants for mass HBV vaccination. PR patients should be tested for underlying virus infections for appropriate therapy and management.

The use of dental implants to replace missing and nonrestorable teeth has increased significantly in the past two decades. The health of peri-implant tissues plays an important role in the long-term success of dental implants. Soft tissue dehiscence around dental implants has frequently been reported which may lead to poor oral hygiene, plaque accumulation, inflamed gingiva, compromised esthetics, and further progression to peri-implantitis. The coverage of exposed implants is aimed to provide adequate keratinized tissue around dental implant. Complete coverage of mucosal defect around the dental implants is still a challenging prospect. This case report describes correction of soft tissue defect and building up of keratinized tissue in relation to implant in the maxillary right first premolar region with subepithelial connective tissue graft along with coronally advanced flap.

Background: New technologies, instruments, and surgical techniques are necessary to help the clinician ensure the best result and satisfy the patient's expectations, and surgical microscope has been thoroughly demonstrated as a useful tool. A clinical study was carried out to compare 2 different types of root coverage procedures using periodontal microsurgical procedure. Materials and Methods: Forty patients were selected and divided into Group A and Group B. Group A subjects were treated with subepithelial connective tissue graft (CTG) whereas Group B subjects were treated using a resorbable collagen membrane. The procedures were performed with the help of an operating microscope using 250 mm objective lens and ×6 magnification. Results: A comparison between baseline, 1, 3, and 12 months have been done between groups among all parameters. It has been noticed that the root coverage was better in Group A subjects at all time. At 12 months, Group A showed 81.42% coverage where in Group B it was 70.08%. Similarly, increase in the width of keratinized gingiva and attached gingiva were more in Group A. Conclusions: The present study showed that use of microsurgical instrument helped to deliver precise incision, better visual acuity, and improved illumination which facilitate to gain a better final outcome. Root coverage was better in the patients using CTG.

The present study seeks to examine the stock-selection performance of the sample open-ended equity mutual fund schemes of Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund Company based on traditional and conditional performance measures. It is generally expected that inclusion of some relevant predetermined public information variables in the conditional CAPM provides better performance estimates as compared to the traditional measures. The study reports that after inclusion of conditioning public information variables, the selectivity performances of the schemes have dramatically improved relative to the traditional measure and also found that conditional measure is superior to traditional measure in statistical test.

We propose and demonstrate reduction of aerodynamic drag for a realistic geometry at highway speeds using serpentine dielectric barrier discharge actuators. A comparable linear plasma actuator fails to reduce the drag at these speeds. Experimental data collected for linear and serpentine plasma actuators under quiescent operating conditions show that the serpentine design has profound effect on near wall flow structure and resulting drag. For certain actuator arrangement, the measured drag reduced by over 14% at 26.8 m/s (60 mph) and over 10% at 31.3 m/s (70 mph) opening up realistic possibility of reasonable energy savings for full scale ground vehicles. In addition, the power consumption data and drag reduction effectiveness for different input signals are also presented.

Plasma sterilization offers a faster, less toxic and versatile alternative to conventional sterilization methods. Using a relatively small, low temperature, atmospheric, dielectric barrier discharge surface plasma generator, we achieved ≥ 6 log reduction in concentration of vegetative bacterial and yeast cells within 4 minutes and ≥ 6 log reduction of Geobacillus stearothermophilus spores within 20 minutes. Plasma sterilization is influenced by a wide variety of factors. Two factors studied in this particular paper are the effect of using different dielectric substrates and the significance of the amount of liquid on the dielectric surface. Of the two dielectric substrates tested (FR4 and semi-ceramic (SC)), it is noted that the FR4 is more efficient in terms of time taken for complete inactivation. FR4 is more efficient at generating plasma as shown by the intensity of spectral peaks, amount of ozone generated, the power used and the speed of killing vegetative cells. The surface temperature during plasma generation is also higher in the case of FR4. An inoculated FR4 or SC device produces less ozone than the respective clean devices. Temperature studies show that the surface temperatures reached during plasma generation are in the range of 30°C-66 °C (for FR4) and 20 °C-49 °C (for SC). Surface temperatures during plasma generation of inoculated devices are lower than the corresponding temperatures of clean devices. pH studies indicate a slight reduction in pH value due to plasma generation, which implies that while temperature and acidification may play a minor role in DBD plasma sterilization, the presence of the liquid on the dielectric surface hampers sterilization and as the liquid evaporates, sterilization improves.
