Generation of magnetic field energy, without mean field generation, is studied. Isotropic mirror-symmetric turbulence of a conducting fluid amplifies the energy of small-scale magnetic perturbations if the magnetic Reynolds number is high, and the dimensionality of space d satisfies 2.103 < d <8.765. The variational approach of Pfirsch and Sudan's averaged magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) to the stability of a line-tied current layer is summarized. The effect of line-tying on current sheets that might arise in line-tied magnetic flux tubes by estimating the growth rates of a resistive instability using a variational method. The results show that this method provides a potentially new technique to gauge the stability of nearly ideal magnetohydrodynamic systems. The primary implication for the stability of solar coronal structures is that tearing modes are probably constant at work removing magnetic shear from the solar corona.

A formalism is developed to describe the purely quasi-static part of the evolution of a coronal loop driven by its footpoints. This is accomplished under assumptions of a long, thin loop. The quasi-static equations reveal the possibility for sudden 'loss of equilibrium' at which time the system evolves dynamically rather than quasi-statically. Such quasi-static crises produce high-frequency Alfven waves and, in conjunction with Alfven wave dissipation models, form a viable coronal heating mechanism. Furthermore, an approximate solution to the quasi-static equations by perturbation method verifies the development of small-scale spatial current structure.

The technique for obtaining a subgrid model for Navier-Stokes turbulence, based on renormalization group analysis (RNG), is extended to the reduced magnetohydrodynamic (RMND) equations. It is shown that a RNG treatment of the Alfven turbulence supported by the RMHD equations leads to effective values of the viscosity and resistivity at large scales, k yields 0, dependent on the amplitude of turbulence. The effective viscosity and resistivity become independent of the molecular quantities when the RNG analysis is augmented by the Kolmogorov argument for energy cascade. A self-contained system of equations is derived for the range of scales, k = 0-K, where K = pi/Delta is the maximum wave number for a grid size Delta. Differential operators, whose coefficients depend upon the amplitudes of the large-scale quantities, represent in this system the resistive and viscous dissipation.

The physical mechanism by which mechanical energy is delivered to and absorbed by the solar corona is discussed. A set of MHD equations for analyzing the slow evolution of the magnetic field and the fast time of Alfven waves is presented. Alfven wave dissipation is treated. It is shown that the slow motion of the feet of coronal arches leads to irregular magnetic fields and that Alfven waves propagating in the irregular magnetic structure are dissipated through filamentation of the wave packet that generates short scales necessary for efficient dissipation.

The importance of field line geometry for shear Alfven wave dissipation in coronal arches is demonstrated. An eikonal formulation makes it possible to account for the complicated magnetic geometry typical in coronal loops. An interpretation of Alfven wave resonance is given in terms of gradient steepening, and dissipation efficiencies are studied for two configurations: the well-known slab model with a straight magnetic field, and a new model with stochastic field lines. It is shown that a large fraction of the Alfven wave energy flux can be effectively dissipated in the corona.

Using numerical simulations of the anelastic partial differential equations, convective flow in a two-dimensional polytropic atmosphere is investigated. Fixing the aspect ratio at unity and choosing the viscosity as the order parameter, the numerical solutions have indicated a variety of dynamic behavior including (1) oscillatory motion with a period of order the eddy turnover time, (2) quasi-periodic motion with a long period much longer than an eddy turnover time, and (3) at least two branches of solutions in certain regimes.

The capabilities of direct interaction approximations (DIA) and weak-coupling approximations (WCA) in modeling turbulence in plasma physics studies are examined. DIA and WCA formalisms are reviewed and a DIA expression for homogeneous incompressible hydrodynamics is simplified to derive an energy spectrum in an arbitrary wavenumber space. A solution is defined for the expression when applied to long wavelength phenomena generated by an instability. The equation is further generalized to yield a transport equation for modeling the spectrum generated by homogeneous turbulence in a linearly unstable system undergoing nonlinear interaction. Finally, the technique is applied to two-dimensional turbulence in a low pressure, weakly ionized plasma embedded in a homogeneous magnetic field and experiencing instabilities caused by electron density and electric potential gradients, such as found in the ionospheric E region.
