This paper focuses on the use of internet tools and services by research scholars of the faculty of applied sciences in the University of Kerala. Questionnaire method was employed for data collection and out of the 59 respondents, 41 are female and 18 male scholars. Majority of the research scholars were under the age group of 26-30. The study revealed that majority of the research scholars use internet for e - journal access and research purpose. Most of them access internet from departments, and spent more time for internet access (mean value 2.46). Results indicated that e- mail is the most commonly used web service among research scholars. Most of the time they use internet for organizing and maintenance of information. It is evident that Google, Yahoo, and Alta vista are the most widely used search engines. The study also revealed that major obstacles faced by research scholars are overload of information and distraction from the initial purpose for accessing the Internet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study was conducted to investigate the information seeking behavior of hearing impaired students in school libraries. The study was based on a questionnaire survey and data was collected from students from Government Vocational Higher Secondary School (VHSS) for Deaf, Thiruvananthapuram. The analyses revealed that the information needs of hearing impaired students have become complex and problematic due to the insufficiency of adequate information sources and services and there are quite a number of challenges faced by the hearing impaired students in accessing information from the libraries. It has been found that, even though assistive technologies are playing a vital role in the educational aspects of differently-abled students, it is not playing a role in the progress in library services for differently-abled. Most of the students are not aware of the assistive technologies available to assist them in accessing information. The overall result of the study was that, though the library services provided in the school are useful for their studies, the respondents cannot make use of them because of barriers. Examines quantitatively the growth and development of bioinformatics research in India in terms of the publication output as reflected in Web of Science (WoS) database for the period 2006-2010.The bibliographic details of 577bioinformatics data obtained from the WoS database were studied and it was found that among the total bioinformatics contributions, nearly half are from India. Majority of the contributions were multi- authored and the degree of collaboration was 0.93 and most of the publications were in the form of journal articles. BMC Bioinformatics published by Bio Med Central ranks first position with 28 publications followed by In Silico Biology (IOP press) with 24 publications. IISc, Bengaluru is the most productive bioinformatics research institute in the country followed by ISI, Kolkata. Delhi is the leading state with 6.41% of the total Indian contribution in bioinformatics followed by West Bengal with 5.37% publications. The web has transformed the ways by which people search, And, use and communicate information. Integrating the use of web 2.0 technology in libraries has become the subject of interest among library professionals. Web 2.0 technologies facilitate interactive information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design, dynamic content, openness, and user participation. This paper assesses the web 2.0 technology skills among library professionals in the University of Kerala. The study includes the library professionals employed in the Kerala university library system. The questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The study revealed that e-mail has an important impact on the level of web 2.0 use among library professionals. The majority of the library professionals did not have much idea about RSS feeds, content management, social bookmarking, podcast, wikis, etc. Analysis also showed that the library professionals in University of Kerala have a positive attitude towards the implementation of web 2.0 technologies in libraries. In this paper an attempt has been made to highlight quantitative growth and development of the CSIR-National Institute of Interdisciplinary Science&Technology (NIIST), Thiruvananthapuram in terms of publication output for the years 2007-2011. During the period, a total of 1080 publications and 110 patents were published. The average number of publications per year was 216. The highest numbers of papers (242) were published in 2008 and 41 patents awarded in the same year. Authorship and collaboration trend were towards multi-authored paper and the degree of collaboration was 0.986. There were 1066 (99%) multi-authored/collaborative papers and only 14(1%) single authored publications. The most preferred journals for publication by the scientists were: Journal of Alloys and Compounds, Journal of the American Ceramic Society and Bio resource Technology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Analysis of 137 Ph. D theses submitted during 2001-2010 found that majority of the theses (107) were in chemistry. The study analysed the number of references included in the theses and found an average of 242.79 references to a thesis. Out of the 35 approved research guides, the maximum number of 21 theses were submitted under the guidance of Dr. G. Vijay Nair followed by 11 theses under the supervision of Dr. Suresh Das and 10 under Dr. A. Ajayaghosh. Bibliographic details of 1076 research articles obtained from the annual reports of Central Tube Crops Research Institute (CTCRI ) were studied and it was found that the highest number of 169 papers was published in the year 2006 and the average number of publications per year was 97.82. Most of the contributions were multi authored (87.68%). The degree of collaboration of scientists of CTCRI was 0.87 and most of the articles published by the scientists were in the foreign journals (51.89%). Journal of Root Crop spublished by Indian Society of Root Crops tops the list with the highest number of articles 125 (39.30%). Applicability of Bradford's Law in the journal distribution pattern of the CTCRI scientists does not fit the Bradford's distribution pattern. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Information literacy encompasses learning to learn and ability to research, evaluation and apply information. Information literacy helps in overcoming the problems of identifying and retrieving right information for the right person at the right time in a right manner. Building an information literate community is a complex process. The purpose of this paper is to briefly examine initiatives by the Government of India in bridging the digital divide. In this article the authors examine the scientific research contained in doctoral dissertations produced at the University of Kerala, India. The article notes the increase in research and states that nearly 11,000 students are awarded Ph.D degrees a year in India and a majority of them specialized in the sciences. A number of topics are addressed including the department of biochemistry at the University of Kerala, the methodology employed in the production of this research paper, and the division of the biochemistry students by gender.
