Air pollutants from biomass burning, including forest fires and agricultural trash burning, have contributed significantly to the pollution of the Asian atmosphere. Burned area estimates are variable, making it difficult to measure these emissions. Improving emission quantification of these critical air pollution sources requires refining methods and collecting thorough data. This study estimates air pollutants from biomass burning, including PMs, NOX, SO2, BC, and OC. Machine learning (ML) with the Random Forest (RF) method was used to assess burned areas in Google Earth Engine. Forest emissions were highest in the upper north and peaked in March and April 2019. Air pollutants from agricultural waste residue were found in the lower north, but harvesting seasons made timing less reliable. Biomass burning was compared to the MODIS aerosol optical depth (AOD) and Sentinel-5P air pollutants, with all comparisons made by the Pollution Control Department (PCD) Thailand air monitoring stations. Agro-industries, mainly sugar factories, produce air pollutants by burning bagasse as biomass fuel. Meanwhile, the emission inventory of agricultural operations in northern Thailand, including that of agro-industry and forest fires, was found to have a good relationship with the monthly average levels of ambient air pollutants. Induction motors and steam turbines are the main components in the sugar cane milling process. This study analyzes the efficiency of induction motors and steam turbines as mill drives at the Kebon Agung Sugar Factory in Malang, Indonesia. This study used experimental methods by observing and testing at the Kebon Agung Sugar Factory. The induction motors analyzed were mills 1, 2, and 5. Meanwhile, the steam turbines analyzed were cane cutter 1, 2, heavy-duty hammer shredder, mill 3, and mill 4. Motor and turbine data were obtained through the control system. Furthermore, the motor and turbine data are processed, and the efficiency comparison is calculated. From the results of the analysis, the average value of the efficiency of an induction motor is more significant when compared to a steam turbine. The average weight of induction motor efficiency is 94.6%, and the average value of steam turbine efficiency is 77.2%. This research recommends that the Kebon Agung Sugar Factory replace the steam turbine with an induction motor in the future. The recommendation given to Kebon Agung Sugar Factory is the use of induction motors on CC 1, CC 2, HDHS, mill 1, and mill 5. An induction motor is a relatively easy install compared to a steam turbine; the construction is robust and highly efficient, requires minimal maintenance, and does not require special equipment during operation.

The sugar industry in Russia plays a huge role in ensuring the country’s food security and is a strategic industry. Of the 90 sugar factories in Russia today, a third of the factories are closed due to unprofitability associated with the high cost of sugar production due to low feed capacity. The raw material for sugar production is sugar beet, mainly domestically produced. The locations of most sugar factories are small municipalities, for which they are the town-forming enterprises. For the revival of closed sugar factories, it is necessary to increase their capacity, which is difficult to do due to the fact that in the diffusion section of each sugar factory there is one large-sized imported diffusion apparatus of a mechanical type, which does not allow increasing capacity in any other way than purchasing a new, more high-performance expensive imported diffusion apparatus of a mechanical type. In the current conditions of uncertainty and disruption of trade relations with other countries, new suppliers of high-performance diffusion apparatus are needed in Russia itself, the apparatus of which would at least not be inferior to the Western apparatus. The Russian company Ingehim has developed a diffusion pulsating apparatus (DPA) without mechanical movable transporting devices, which reduces energy consumption, operating costs and lowers quality requirements for sugar beet chips. The test results obtained using an experimental unit showed a higher quality of the diffusion juice. The lightness of the juice was found to be much higher compared to juices produced in conventional diffusion apparatus, and the juice purity was found to be 5% higher at a comparable solids content, resulting in an additional amount of sugar produced per year, allowing for a faster return on investment.

The article evaluates Czech and Slovak sugar companies in the process of transformation and abolition of quotas on the European sugar market. The assessment considers the payment behaviour, financial health and condition. Sugar companies in the Czech Republic and Slovakia had a low probability of bankruptcy before the beginning of 2019 and subsequently in 2020. They have maintained good payment behaviour towards their customers; they were financially stable entities. A deterioration in the sector’ valuation and significant changes in the sugar market may have a negative impact. The likelihood of maintaining sugar production at current levels and maintaining financial health, solvency and payment discipline in the period ahead remains high. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Area and production under sugarcane in Andhra Pradesh was decreasing continuously since 2014-15. Sugarcane farmers belonged to North Coastal Zone (NCZ) are linked with sugarcane industries, operating under organized cooperative and private sectors nearer to rural areas. Sugarcane industries are facing problems from both industry and farmer side. Out of total 12 factories located in North Coastal Zone, only five sugar mills are operating. To explore the ground for declining trend in sugarcane cultivation, the present survey was taken up with the specific objective to determine the constraints encountered by the cane growers and sugar factories. Probability proportionate sampling procedure was adopted for selection of respondents. Response Priority Index (RPI) was employed to quantify the constraints. Results reveal that Labour shortage (RPI = 0.89) and higher production cost (RPI = 0.93) were major constraints encountered by the sugarcane cultivators and factories respectively. Background: The study focuses on simplified make-and-pack production in the sugar industry as a case study. The analyzed system is characterized by parallel packing lines, which share one resource with a sequenceindependent setup time. Additionally, the special characteristics that occur in many enterprises make scheduling difficult. The special characteristics of the system are the simultaneous occurrence of a variable input stream, scheduling of processes, and including the reliability of machines. Due to the variability of the input parameters, it is appropriate to consider the use of Digital Twin, which is a virtual representation of the real processes' performance. Therefore, this purpose of the paper is two-fold. First, an analysis of sequence determination of the stream-splitting machine was performed with taking into account the impact of logistics system reliability on system performance. Second, the concept of implementing Digital Twin in the analyzed production process is presented. Methods: The mathematical model for line efficiency was developed on the presented make-and-pack production presented in the selected sugar industry. Different sequences of stream-splitting machines were studied to examine the system's efficiency, availability, and utilization of packaging lines. Two scenarios were investigated with the use of computer simulation. Results: Computer simulation experiments were performed to investigate the sequencing and planning of packaging line problems. The results obtained for the case company indicated a significant dependence between the preferred packing sequence and the operational parameters. Conclusions: The simulations confirm the influence of internal and external factors on sugar line packaging processes. The main advantage of the developed simulation model is identifying the relationship between the size of the input stream and the system's availability level, as well as identifying the main constraints on the possibility of implementing the DT concept in the analyzed company. After the petering out of the splendid industrial boom in Malaga at the end of the 19th century, the city experienced a partial recovery during the first third of the 20th century. Among the newly-created industrial enterprises were the sugar factories adapted to the processing of both cane and beet. One of them was El Tarajal, promoted by prominent members of the city's business and political oligarchy. In this study, we aimed to determine the in vitro activity of Leuconostoc mesenteroides var. mesenteroides isolated from sugar-industry effluents to produce a dextran bioflocculant from sucrose as a low-cost substrate. L. mesenteroides strains present in residual cane juice from a sugar factory were isolated and biochemically identified using Mayeux, Sandine, and Elliker agar (MSE) as a selective medium. The strain number 3 (LM03) was biochemically identified as L. mesenteroides var. mesenteroides, which was used for this study. The concentration of dextran was quantified by dry weight, the morphology and purity were evaluated using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Flocculation was evaluated via turbidimetric assays in different pH ranges from sugar-industry effluents and doses of dextran. To evaluate the flocculant activity according to the effect of pH, a jar test kit from Phipps and Bird, USA, was used with the sample recollected from the effluent (sugar industry). The pH of the samples was adjusted to 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11, with a dose of 40 ppm (dextran dose) at a fast and slow speed of 150 and 50 rpm, respectively. To evaluate the influence of the dose of dextran, values of 5, 20 and 40 ppm were used with fast speeds of 180-150 rpm and slow speeds of 30-50 rpm, respectively. The strain (LM03) was able to produce the highest concentration of dextran (26.87 g/L) in 76 h of incubation. The presence of dextran was identified in the MSE agar after incubation and characterized by FTIR, SEM, and EDS. Besides that, we observed that the best flocculation activity was observed at a pH of 9 and a concentration of 40 ppm of dextran, with a fast agitation speed of 150 rpm for 5 min and a slow agitation speed of 50 rpm for 15 min, achieving 77.7% removal of turbidity from the sugar factory effluent. L. mesenteroides was responsible for the bioflocculation of dextran in different sugar-industry effluents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Despite their potential as biofuel resources, large-scale production of biofuels from microalgae is still uncertain primarily due to a lack of feasibility of the process and that it proves to be capital and energy intensive. Therefore, an integration of microalgal cultivation with other processes for achieving an inexpensive nutrient and energy use is an important issue. In the present study, the potential of the flue gas and the wastewater of a sugar factory to support microalgae growth for biofuel and bio-fertilizer production is evaluated. Methods The study was carried out by following a case study approach; an Ethiopian sugarcane-processing factory, Metahara sugar and ethanol production factory, was selected for this purpose. Conceptual microalgal biofuel production was integrated with the real sugarcane-processing factory, and the process was evaluated with regard to the product outputs and energy requirements. Results The integrated process model shows that three products, biodiesel, upgraded biogas, and bio-fertilizer with production capacities of 188 tons/year, 1,974,882 m3/year and 42 tons/year, respectively, were produced. For the production of these products, the electricity and thermal energy demand of the integrated process amounted to 1822.13 and 3244.99 MWh/year, respectively. A sensitivity analysis shows that the oil content of the algae, the nitrogen content of the waste, the oil extraction efficiency, and the transesterification efficiency are the main factors which affect the biodiesel production capacity of the integrated process. Conclusions This case study approach investigated the potential of a future possible bio-refinery and environmental pollution reduction concept by integrating microalgae biomass production with sugarcane-processing factory wastes and by-products. It was found that the factory wastes and by-products have a significant potential for a viable biofuel production from microalgae.

The Republic of Turkey gave priority to agriculture and agro-industry in order to develop and build industry. Creating the necessary capital for industry depended on this policy. The problems experienced in the supply and price of sugar during the World War I and the National Struggle led the Republican administrators to establish an industry in this field. With the establishment of the Sugar Monopoly Administration in 1926, state control over production and consumption was established. In 1935, the four existing sugar factories were merged under the Turkish Sugar Factories İncorporated Company. In 1951, the Democratic Party Government decided to expand the sugar industry in Turkey. During the Democratic Party period, 11 sugar factories were established. Thus, sugar factories became an indispensable element of a strong economic system. Although the Democratic Party adopted private enterprise as a principle in the economy, the establishment process of sugar factories showed that such an industrial move could not be realized without state support. The aim of this study is to detail the economic performance of the Democratic Party in the sugar example. About 95 billion m3 of water is used all over the country every year, 1.8% of which is consumed in industrial sector. Sugar factories are among consumers with high water demands. In Iranian sugar factories, between 22 and 27 m3 of water is used per ton of sugarcane which is much higher than the world’s average which is about 11 m3 per sugarcane ton. Besides, the organic load in the wastewater of these factories is high. Therefore wastewater treatment and water reuse are essential for such factories. Water reuse is an effective solution to reduce the consumption of freshwater entry and prevent the environmental consequences. This study introduced a process of sugar production from sugarcane and analyzed the water consumption and feasibility of water reuse in different sections of the production process. Four main methods for reducing water consumption and wastewater production are: rainwater harvesting, using the humidity of sugarcane, water recycle and wastewater treatment and water reuse which are studied and important parameter in each case are introduced. In case of wastewater treatment, application of new methods of treatment such as aerobic granulation will be most efficient.

In India, sugar factories play an additional role of providing extension services for their registered sugarcane farmers, through the Sugarcane Development Personnel (SDP). The SDP work closely with the farmers, facilitating them to make informed decisions on sugarcane farming and ensure regular supply of quality cane. Surmising that these personnel would use Internet in the information-dissemination process, only if they have formed the attitude to do so, this study measured the attitudes of SDP belonging to two sugar factories of Tamil Nadu state in southern India, towards Internet usage. Data were collected from 40 SDP. The findings indicated that majority of the SDP were cane officers, who were between 35 and 45 years of age and had completed undergraduation. Most of them had PC/laptop for Internet access at office and had over 2 years of experience in using the computers everyday for farm-related activities. 'Locating the required material' was reported to be the major difficulty in using Internet for farm use. Majority of the respondents had a 'moderately favourable' attitude towards Internet, with the item 'Internet is a fast and efficient means of gaining information' of the attitude scale receiving the highest mean score. Stepwise regression analysis revealed that the variable 'Experience in current occupation' was a predictor of the attitude of the SDP towards Internet. The findings of the study would be helpful to sugar factories, state development departments, sugarcane/sugar research institutes and training institutions, while integrating cyber-extension into conventional agricultural extension services. The results of the research carried out at the Odessa National Academy of Food Technologies within the framework of state-contracted topics are presented. The outcomes of the automated control system simulation of sugar massecuite cook process in vacuum apparatus of periodic performance are presented. The feasibility of simulation in the environment of microprocessor controller was substantiated, on its basis the automated workplace of the operator is created. Laboratory research was carried out at the bench agreed with the Customer of industrial microprocessor controllers and software of Ukrainian production, including SCADA-system "INDEL". Simplified model of boiling process as an object of control by two main channels is developed. The programs executing control algorithms for sugar massecuite boiling process in VA as well as the program executing the simplified model was created by FBD-like programming language of Ukrainian MK52 controller. For the connection between the software controller and computer the converter of interfaces type BPI-52 (MODBUS RTU to USB) Ukrainian production was used. Analysis of the control system results simulation obtained in the form of parametric diagrams and time graphs using SCADA-system "INDEL" allowed to make conclusions about the propriety of the developed control algorithms and implemented programs. On the basis of researches positive results, commercial version the VA operator automated workplace was created. The developed system was implemented as a part of upgraded ACS of process by Food Department of active sugar factory. Production testing and operation has confirmed the validity of the ACS through the boiling process of sugar massecuite which was developed according to the results of the relevant laboratory studies. Sugar Industry X in processing liquid waste from sugar production activities by using Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP). As the years of IPAL performance increase, it is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of IPAL performance. The purpose of this research is to know the treatment of liquid waste in Sugar Industry X. The method used in this research is descriptive observasional. This research uses primary data and secondary data. Primary data were obtained from interview and interim observation of secondary data from processing section in the form of inlet laboratory test result and IPAL outlet. Parameter of result of laboratory test analysis is pH, BOD5, COD, TSS, Sulfide, oil and fat. Sampling is conducted from July to October 2017. The results of this study are the average pH concentration 7. The Sugar Industry X IPAL works effectively in lowering the concentrations of BOD5, COD, TSS, Sulfide, oils and fats. The order of decrease of concentration of parameters are 97,90%; 97.51%; 78.80%; 99.80%; 28.81%. From the evaluation of wastewater at IPAL outlet shows that all parameters have met the quality standard of waste water for sugar industry based on East Java Governor Regulation No. East. 52 of 2014 and Minister of Environment Regulation no. 5 Year 2014.

Sugar factory labor was highly vulnerable to get work accident in work place. The objective of this research was to identify the relation between working period and knowledge level to the prevention of work accident through variable of work stress on mill and kettle workers. This research was quantitative in analytical observational method and cross sectional design. Total sample of research were 115 workers in the sugar mill and kettle at sugar factory of Rejo Agung Baru Madiun through total sampling. The research data was tested in SEM (Structural Equation Model) method by exerting instrument of Stata 13 to analyze the data. Based on the finding of research, on the sig value of working period 0.006 and sig value of knowledge level 0.023, it referred the relation in variable of working period through work stress, while no relation in variable of knowledge level through work stress to the prevention of work accident. Thus, it required to more stimulation to the knowledge level and more support to the workers in order to minimize their work stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, energy and exergy analysis of a 16 MW cogeneration plant of a sugar factory located in India is carried out. Bagasse leaving the mills with 50% moisture is fed directly into the boiler as fuel. Maximum energy loss (23.021%) as well as maximum exergy destruction (68.219%) is found in the boiler furnace. The fuel moisture alone accounts for 11.89% energy loss due to the absorption of huge portion of combustion heat for its vapourization. Therefore, the effect of reducing bagasse moisture content on this analysis is examined through computer simulation. Reducing moisture content of bagasse from 50% to nil would increase the power output, the cogeneration energy efficiency and the cogeneration exergy efficiency by 3597 kW, 3.66% and 3.02% respectively. It is also found that 6.342% of fuel energy is lost through the exhaust gases. To utilize a portion of this waste heat, a vapour absorption refrigeration system is integrated with the considered plant. It is found that the proposed cooling system would produce a refrigerating effect of 594.714 TR with a COP of 0.721 and can, therefore, be used for preserving large quantities of vegetables in a cold storage. • Maximum energy loss as well as maximum exergy destruction occurs in boiler furnace. • Power and efficiencies improve significantly by reducing bagasse moisture to nil. • Reducing bagasse moisture will also reduce exergy destruction in boiler furnace. • Suitable means to dry bagasse before feeding it into the boiler may be adopted. • Utilization of exhaust heat for cooling purpose in cold storage is also examined.
