The present study investigated the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying smartphone/internet addiction. We tested a specific hypothesis that the excessive, uncontrolled use of smartphones should be related to the ability of controlling attention in a purely endogenous and self-regulatory manner. In an fMRI experiment, in which 43 adults participated, we had participants detect and identify specified target stimuli among non-targets. In some trials, 10 s oddball movies were presented as distractors. While the participants try to filter out the distractors and focus their attention on the main task, the activation profiles of the frontoparietal brain regions were examined. The results showed that the people with a higher risk of being addicted to smartphone use failed to filter out distractors via the endogenous control of attention. The neuroimaging data showed that the high-risk group showed significantly lower levels of activation in the frontopolar cortex (FPC). We conclude that people at a high risk of smartphone addiction have difficulty endogenously shifting their attention from distracting stimuli toward goal-directed behavior, and FPC plays a critical role in this self-regulatory control of attention.

Adaptive behavior in the environment requires a high level of cognitive control to bias limited processing resources to behaviorally significant stimuli. Such control has been associated with a set of brain regions located in the fronto-parietal cortex (multiple demand network), whose activity was found to increase as the control demand for a task increases. In contrast, another set of regions, default mode network regions, were found to be deactivated during top-down processing of task stimuli. Despite this dissociation in their activation amplitudes, it is possible that activation patterns of these regions commonly encode specific task features. In two independent neuroimaging datasets, involving a total of 40 human samples, we found that the performance of an attentional task evoked positive activity of the MDN and deactivation of the DMN. Consistent with previous studies, task features could be decoded from the fronto-parietal cognitive regions. Importantly, the regions of the DMN also encoded task features when the task set had to be rapidly reconfigured in a transient, trial-by-trial manner, along with the MDN regions. These results suggest that the two separate brain networks ultimately co-ordinate for the effective establishment of top-down cognitive control.

When multiple stimuli are simultaneously presented, they compete against each other to be represented in the capacity-limited visual system. This competition increases as stimulus heterogeneity increases. Given that selective attention is a way to resolve this competition, it has been known that the effect of attention on task performance is magnified as the level of competition increases due to increased stimulus heterogeneity. While previous studies showed that stimulus heterogeneity in a task-irrelevant dimension affects task performance, it remains unknown how this kind of stimulus heterogeneity interacts with visual attention and stimulus-driven competition. Here, we found that the process of searching for a target stimulus among non-targets became inefficient as stimulus heterogeneity in a task-irrelevant dimension increased. The results also showed that the magnitude of the attentional cuing effect could be affected by increased heterogeneity. However, this modulation was dependent on the type of varied feature or task demand. We suggest that increased stimulus heterogeneity in a task-irrelevant dimension would increase stimulus-driven competition, which impoverishes the quality of stimulus representations.

The performance of a goal-directed task is often interrupted by task-irrelevant distractors. This distractor interference has well been demonstrated in a large body of studies employing the Eriksen flanker paradigm. A notable finding regarding this issue is that distractor interference is attenuated by increased perceptual load or the presence of non-target stimuli diluting distractors. Besides increased perceptual load or the presence of diluters, we hypothesized that either suppression of distractor or enhancement of target via top-down attentional control would also contribute to modulating distractor interference. To test this, we had participants identify a target stimulus while ignoring a distractor under three different conditions; under low load, only the target and distractor was presented, while under high load, the target was surrounded by non-target letters. In the dilution condition, the target was accompanied by non-targets, whose colors were distinct from the target. Importantly, following the task stimuli, a probe stimulus was presented either in the target location, non-target location, or distractor location. As results, under low load, attention was captured by the target stimulus in a bottom-up manner at the early stage of processing. By contrast, in the high load and dilution conditions, attention was focused on the target in a top-down manner. Taken together, we suggest that increasing perceptual load or presenting diluters incentivizes the establishment of top-down bias toward the target stimulus, which plays a role in attenuating distractor interference.

Neuroimaging studies for human participants have shown that the activity in the multiple-demand (MD) network is associated with various kinds of cognitive demand. However, surprisingly, it remains unclear how this MD network is related to a core component of cognition, the process of searching for a target among distractors. This was because previous neuroimaging studies of visual search were confounded by task difficulty or time on task. To circumvent these limitations, we examined human brain activity while participants perform two different visual search tasks. The performance of a task was limited by increased attentional demand, while the other task was primarily limited by poor quality of input data or neural noise. Throughout the MD network, increased activity and strengthened functional connectivity among the MD regions were observed under the search task recruiting capacity-limited attentional resources. The present findings provide unequivocal evidence that the MD network mediates visual search, as well as other capacity-limited cognitive processes.
