10. Impact of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria on yield and disease control of Nicotiana tabacum

Abstract

An unexplored soil microbial community associated with the root system of Nicotiana tabacum was isolated to analyze its impact on growth and yield of the crop. A total of nine isolates out of 180 were biochemically screened and characterized as potential plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria due to the expression of growth-promoting traits. All isolates were positive for ammonia production, 8 were positive for phosphate solubilization but none for auxin production. The majority of the isolates were also found positive for hydrogen cyanide, siderophore and hydrolytic/degradative enzymes production, enabling them to restrict the growth of Fusarium oxysporum in an in vitro assay. Although all tested isolates enhanced tobacco growth significantly, Baj-ER-01 and CD-RS-03 were found to be the most promising in enhancing all aspects of growth. This study provides evidence for the enhancement of growth and yield of inoculated tobacco plants through an adequate supply of nutrients and/or controlling phytopathogens.

Abstract

Heavy metals entered in the soil from numerous sources and reduce the crop growth, productivity, and the quality of the soil environment. Uptake of heavy metals by plants and microorganisms is synchronized through the influences of many factors, such as complex soil–plant and microorganism processes. Soil microorganisms are closely associated with soil fertility and are considered important indicators of healthy soils. Various microorganisms have different strategies and mechanisms for survival in heavy metal-contaminated environments such as biosorption, and secretion of compounds that form complexes with heavy metals. The present paper reviewed the recent literature pertaining to heavy metal uptake and tolerance mechanisms of the most important microbial genera viz Aeromonas, Bacillus, and Pseudomonas. This review also focused on the survival and adaptations of selected microbial genera in heavy metal polluted soil habitats which may be helpful in maintaining healthy conditions of agricultural soils. Overall, this review provided the comprehensive knowledge pertaining to heavy metals, their effects on living organisms, and the metal uptake and resistance mechanisms of the selected bacterial genera. Abstract

Background: acne vulgaris is the most common skin condition seen by the dermatologists. It is a chronic inflammatory disease of pilosebaceous unit characterized by seborrhea, comedones, papules, pustules, nodules, cysts and in some cases scars and keloids, which persist for rest of the life. Objectives: the present work aimed at evaluating the level of awareness, Attitude And Practice toward acne vulgaris in Jeddah city . Methods: a cross sectional analytical questionnaire based study was carried out among the general population in Jeddah city. This study started in the year (2016) and composed of 461 subjects. The mean age of citizens was 28,82. To assess citizens’ demographic factors and beliefs about acne vulgaris, consenting citizens completed an anonymous online questionnaire. The data was entered and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Results: The sample is consisted of 65,8% women and 34,2% men. Among the respondents 7,7% reported suffering from acne vulgaris and 13,6% confirmed having a history of acne vulgaris illness in their family. The results of the study showed that 153 (34,8%) subjects had weak knowledge related to the disease, 260 (59,1%) subjects had average level of knowledge while only 27 (6,1%) subjects had good knowledge regarding acne vulgaris. There was a statistical significant association between gender, educational level and the level of awareness about acne vulgaris. Conclusion: acne vulgaris is a disease that is potentially controllable but that cannot be cured. Education still be important overall the treatment of the patients.

Abstract

Introduction: Sickle cell disease is considered to be one of the commonest hereditary diseases around the world with being highly prevalent in the regions of sub-Saharan Africa, Mediterranean, Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Sickle cell disease is known to be a chronic hematological disease that leads to severe hemolysis, and is characterized by hemoglobin particles that tend to polymerize within the RBCs and cause the RBC to become in a crescent, sickle shape, which will cause hemolysis along with vasoocclusive events in different organs. Aim of the work: we tried to understand the pathogenesis, impact, diagnosis, and management of sickle cell disease in this study. Methodology: we conducted this review using a comprehensive search of MEDLINE, PubMed and EMBASE from January 1950 to March 2018. The following search terms were used: sickle cell anemia, hemoglobinopathy, genetics of sickle cell, complications of sickle cell, management of sickle cell disease Conclusion: It is important to develop therapeutic options that reduce the risk of complications of sickle cell disease. Despite all advances in treatment, sickle cell disease remains to be an important serious disease that is associated with severe morbidity and mortality, and poor quality of life. More research and clinical trials should be conducted on this disease to develop advanced treatment options that will further improve quality of life and decrease mortality and complications. 38. Characterization of bio‐fabricated silver nanoparticles for distinct anti‐fungal activity against sugarcane phytopathogens.

Abstract

Advanced research, development, and application of silver nanoparticles is proceeding in recent times due to their incredible utilization in various fields. Present study was focused on the production, characterization, and antifungal activities of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). An environment friendly extracellular biosynthetic approach was adopted to produce the AgNPs by using bacteria, fungi, and sugarcane husk. Agents used for reduction of silver to nanoparticles were taken from culture filtrate of plant growth promoting bacteria, Fusarium oxysporum and supernatant extract of sugarcane husk. Nanoparticles were also characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Synthesis of colloidal AgNPs was observed by UV–Visible diffused reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS). Primary peak of surface plasmon resonance band was noticed around 339.782, 336.735, and 338.258 nm for bacterial, fungal, and sugarcane husk produced AgNPs. Structure of all biologically produced nanoparticles were crystalline cubic with nano size of 45.41, 49.06, and 42.75 nm for bacterial, fungal, and sugarcane husk‐based nanoparticles, respectively as calculated by Debye–Scherrer equation using XRD. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis revealed the presence of various compounds that aid in the reduction, capping, and stability of AgNPs. The antifungal activity of AgNPs was also investigated for sugarcane fungal pathogens Colletotricum falcatum and Fusarium moniliforme. All nanoparticles exhibit prominent antifungal activities. Maximum zone of fungal inhibition was noticed about 18, 19, and 21 mm for C. falcatum while 21, 20, and 24 mm for F. moniliforme in case of bacterial, fungal, and plant‐based nanoparticles (15 ppm), respectively. Best fungal inhibition was observed under application of sugarcane husk based AgNPs. Moreover, biologically produced AgNPs responded better towards the suppression of F. moniliforme in comparison to C. falcatum. Mentioned sources in present study can be ecofriendly nano‐factories for biosynthesis of AgNPs and mankind should benefit from their commercial application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We conduct a web-based laboratory experiment in which first-year undergraduate students from a university in Istanbul play dictator and ultimatum games. Firstly, we analyze and try to explore the behavior of Turkish students. Then, we compare our results with the Saleem and Chaudhry (2011) results, which have exactly same experiment design, for the Pakistani students. We find evidence against the payoff maximization (self-regarding) hypothesis. Offers that give responder positive amounts in the dictator game are evidence of some degree of “altruism”. Pure self-interest model would predict that player 1 would keep entire amount. On average mean offers by Turkish students are higher than the means offers by the Pakistanis in DG. In UG, mean offers are same in both cases and overall rejection rate are quite higher in Turkish case than in Pakistanis case when comparing 43 % with 31 %. It is evident that Turkish students are more altruistic than Pakistanis while female in both games are more fair than males.

49. EFFECT OF RHIZOBIUM ON GROWTH OF DIFFERENT MUNGBEAN VARIETIES UNDER SALT STRESS CONDITIONS

Abstract

Excessive and imbalanced use of chemical fertilizers may pose devastating effect on soil fertility and sustainable productivity. Bio-organic amendments improve soil fertility and sustainable crop productivity. Seeds of mungbean varieties i.e. NCM-2013, Chackwal-Mung 06, NM-11 and AZRI-06 were inoculated with rhizobium in saline soil. These inccilated miunngbean varieties were sown under artificially salinity developed soil (ECe= 5.0 dSm-1) using completely randomized design with three repeats for enhancement of growth. The experiment was conducted during July to September, 2015 in the Head House of Land Resources Research Institute, National Agricultural research Centre, Islamabad, Pakistan. Data were collected on germination, plant height, root length, fresh / dry weight and chlorophyll contents during experiment period. Ionic concentrations of P, Cu, Fe, Mg and Zn were determined to compare the difference of edible quality in saline soil under the inoculation of seeds with rhizobium. Effect of biozote on germination, root length, fresh weight and dry weight was significant in all mung bean varieties: NCM-2013, Chakwal Mung-06, NM-II and AZRI-06 under salt stress conditions. Maximum germination (53%) was recorded by Chakwal Mung-06 followed by 51% by AZRI-06. The maximum root length (10.1 cm) was registered by NM-II. Fresh weight / plant was maximum (5.1 g) by AZRI-06. The maximum dry weight/plant (1.5 g) was recorded by AZRI-06. Maximum P% (0.14), Cu (4.83 ppm), Fe (179.3ppm), Mg (2.07ppm) and Zn (168.8ppm) of Chakwal Mung-06 with the use of rhizobium under salt stress by NM-11. Similar trend was also recorded in ionic concentration of P, Cu, Fe and Mg by NM-11 without rhizobium under salt stress conditions.. The saline soil affected the quality of mungbean showing the reduction under salt stress without rhizobium inoculation in ionic concentration.
