Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use is low among Black same gender-loving men (BSGLM) in Mecklenburg County, NC, an Ending the HIV Epidemic priority jurisdiction. We created PrEP-MECK-an investigator partnership among a community-based organization representative, a PrEP provider, and researchers-and conducted iterative preparation research to identify determinants of PrEP uptake and implementation strategies to address them.We first established the PrEP-MECK Coalition of community stakeholders. Next, informed by PrEP-MECK Coalition input and PRECEDE-PROCEED's educational/ecological assessment phase, we conducted focus group discussions with BSGLM not using PrEP and in-depth interviews with BSGLM who were currently or had previously taken PrEP to describe determinants and suggest implementation strategies. Based on interim findings, we partnered with clinics participating in the Mecklenburg County PrEP Initiative, which offers free PrEP services to uninsured individuals. We also conducted Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research-informed organizational assessments with community-based organizations and clinics to assess readiness to pilot the implementation strategies.We conducted 4 focus group discussions, 17 in-depth interviews, and 6 assessments. BSGLM were aware of PrEP yet perceived that costs made it unattainable. Awareness of how to access PrEP and the Mecklenburg County PrEP Initiative was lacking, and clinic scheduling barriers and provider mistrust limited access. We identified client-level implementation strategies, primarily focusing on engaging the consumer, to increase comfort with and awareness of how to access PrEP, and clinic-level implementation strategies focusing on changing clinic infrastructure, to make PrEP access easier.We plan to evaluate implementation of these strategies once fully developed to determine their acceptability and other outcomes in future research.

Local health departments (LHDs) and their organizational partners play a critical role in controlling sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the United States. We examine variation in the differentiation, integration, and concentration (DIC) of STD services and develop a taxonomy describing the scope and organization of local STD services. LHD STD programs (n = 115) in Alabama (AL) and California (CA) responded to surveys assessing STD services available in 2014. K-means cluster analysis identified LHD groupings based on DIC variation. Discriminant analysis validated cluster solutions. Differences in organizational partnerships and scope of STD services were compared by taxonomy category. Multivariable regression models estimated the association of the STD services organization taxonomy and five-year (2010–2014) gonorrhea incidence rates, controlling for county-level sociodemographics and resources. A three-cluster solution was identified: (1) low DIC (n = 74), (2) moderate DIC (n = 31), and (3) high DIC (n = 10). Background: The rapid proliferation of fertility apps has created a market that has the potential to address the needs of women and couples worldwide. Some women who seek to prevent pregnancy are making behavioral decisions based on information they receive from fertility apps, yet fertility apps may not always be accurate and reliance on them could lead to unintended pregnancies. Little research has been done to understand who uses fertility apps for pregnancy prevention, how those who use them perceive their efficacy, and their preferences for how apps should be designed and presented to accurately assist them in preventing pregnancy. Methods: A web-based pilot survey was launched through Facebook recruiting women who either currently use a fertility app for pregnancy prevention or intend to use one in the future. Data collected from 1,000 women surveyed user preferences around fertility app characteristics, including aesthetics, features, functionality, and reputation. User knowledge about fertility and reproduction was assessed, and knowledge categories were created. Chi-square tests assessed differences in app characteristic preferences according to knowledge category. Additional qualitative analyses on free-text answers explored which features of apps are important to users when they search for one to use. Results: Approximately one quarter (23.1%) of survey respondents reported currently using a fertility app or had used one in the recent past, and 76.9% reported intention to use one in the future. A majority of both current and intended users (65.4%) had some knowledge of fertility and reproduction, while 16.5% had very little knowledge. 18.1% reported receiving prior provider counseling on using a fertility-awareness based method. Users across all knowledge groups said it was very important for apps to be science-based and that they identify fertile days during the menstrual cycle. Conclusions: Women who use or wish to use apps to prevent pregnancy are seeking apps that are scientifically sound and provide them personalized information around their potential fertility. However, most fertility apps women reported using lack the capability for true fertility-awareness based method application for accurate, reliable pregnancy prevention. More research is needed to evaluate apps for efficacy and accuracy preventing pregnancy. Collaborations between app developers and women’s health experts are encouraged, as well as informed consumerism campaigns.

Adolescents increasingly rely on the Internet as a private resource for sexual health information. Despite growing interest in adults' use of online health resources in HCI, we lack a deeper understanding of adolescents' information-seeking processes and assessments of trustworthy online health information. We conducted a qualitative, observational study of late adolescents as they searched for sexual health and sexuality information and a "think aloud" protocol to concurrently capture user thoughts and perceptions of online content in situ. Our results reveal a four-phased process that late adolescent users employ for searching and evaluating sexual health information on the web, as well as several emergent themes regarding credible and trustworthy information.

The web has unique potential for adolescents seeking comprehensive sexual health information. As such, it is important to understand the nature, scope, and readability of the content and messaging provided by sexuality educational websites. We conducted a content analysis of 14 sexuality education websites for adolescents, based on the 7 essential components (sexual and reproductive health and HIV, relationships, sexual rights and sexual citizenship, pleasure, violence, diversity, and gender) of the International Planned Parenthood Framework for Comprehensive Sexuality Education. A majority of content across all sites focused on sexual and reproductive health and HIV, particularly pregnancy and STI prevention, and other information about STIs and HIV. No other topic comprised more than 10% of content coverage across a majority of sites. The authors found little discussion of gender issues, sexual rights, sexual diversity, or sexual violence. Most sites provided brief references to sexual pleasure, generally moderated with cautionary words. Language used implied a heterosexual female audience. Reading levels for most sites were above the 9th-grade level, with several at the college level. These findings have implications for enhancing online sexuality education and broadening the coverage of essential topics.
