Search

The effective central charge (denoted by $c_{\text{eff}}$) is a measure of entanglement through a conformal interface, while the transmission coefficient (encoded in the coefficient $c_{LR}$ of the two-point function of the energy-momentum tensor across the interface) is a measure of energy transmission through the interface. It has been pointed out that these two are generally different. In this article, we propose the inequalities, $0 \leq c_{LR} \leq c_{\text{eff}} \leq \min (c_L,c_R)$. They have the simple but important implication that the amount of energy transmission can never exceed the amount of information transmission. We verify them using the AdS/CFT correspondence, using the perturbation method, and in examples beyond holography. Symmetries and their anomalies are powerful tools for understanding quantum systems. However, realistic systems are often subject to disorders, dissipation and decoherence. In many circumstances, symmetries are not exact but only on average. This work investigates the constraints on mixed states resulting from non-commuting average symmetries. We will focus on the cases where the commutation relations of the average symmetry generators are violated by nontrivial phases, and call such average symmetry anomalous. We show that anomalous average symmetry implies degeneracy in the density matrix eigenvalues, and present several lattice examples with average symmetries, including XY chain, Heisenberg chain, and deformed toric code models. In certain cases, the results can be further extended to reduced density matrices, leading to a new lower bound on the entanglement entropy. We discuss several applications in the contexts of many body localization, quantum channels, entanglement phase transitions and also derive new constraints on the Lindbladian evolution of open quantum systems., Comment: 37 pages, 1 figure

In this letter, we show the Unruh temperature of the photon sphere for an AdS$_4$-Schwarzschild black hole can be determined holographically from the retarded Green's function and is proportional to its circumference according to a boundary observer. We then sharpen the conjecture that the photon sphere, as seen by a boundary observer, is the spatial Fourier transform of the response function. The conjecture is found to be in excellent agreement with our numerics after certain long-lived excitations -- associated with geodesics traveling between boundary points -- are removed from the response, which is then controlled by the short-lived excitations of the AdS black hole., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. When an interface connects two CFTs, the entanglement entropy between the two CFTs is determined by a quantity called the effective central charge. The effective central charge does not have a simple form in terms of the central charges of the two CFTs, but intricately depends on the transmissive properties of the interface. In this article, we examine universal properties of the effective central charge. We first clarify how the effective central charge appears when considering general subsystems of the interface CFT. Then using this result and ideas used in the proof of the $c$-theorem, we provide a universal upper bound on the effective central charge. In past studies, the effective central charge was defined only in two dimensions. Revisiting the Coon amplitude, a deformation of the Veneziano amplitude with a logarithmic generalization of linear Regge trajectories, we scrutinize its potential origins in a worldsheet theory by proposing a definition of its $q$-deformation through the integral representation of the $q$-beta function. By utilizing $q$-deformed commutation relations and vertex operators, we derive the Coon amplitude within the framework of the dual resonance model. We extend this to the open-string context by $q$-deforming the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$, resulting in a well-defined $q$-deformed open superstring amplitude. We further demonstrate that the $q$-prefactor in the Coon amplitude arises naturally from the property of the $q$-integral. Furthermore, we find that two different types of $q$-prefactors, corresponding to different representations of the same scattering amplitude, are essentially the same by leveraging the properties of $q$-numbers. Our findings indicate that the $q$-deformed string amplitude defines a continuous family of amplitudes, illustrating how string amplitudes with a finite $\alpha^\prime$ uniquely flow to the amplitudes of scalar scattering in field theory at energy scale $\Lambda$ as $q$ changes from $1$ to $0$. This happens without the requirement of an $\alpha^\prime$ expansion, presenting a fresh perspective on the connection between string and field theories.

The AdS/CFT correspondence connects bulk fields $\phi$ to boundary operators $\mathcal{O}$ characterized by source frequency $\omega$ and angular momentum $l$. Here we explore their connection to massless particles with an impact parameter $b=\omega/l$. In the AdS Schwarzschild spacetime, these particles follow unstable orbits around the photon sphere -- with Lyapunov exponent $\lambda$ -- when $b$ is near a critical value. The behavior of the bulk field is obtained numerically and then studied using an analytic approach, which leads to a precise approximate formula for the amplitude of the bulk field $\phi$. This gives the correct qualitative behavior for the system, with the amplitude of the field taking the shape of an arrowhead in tortoise coordinates. The field behaves analogously to the massless particles, and the amplitude of $\phi$ diverges at the critical impact parameter when the source frequency takes the value $\omega \approx \lambda l$, where $\lambda$ is the Lyapunov exponent of the null geodesics. We find this transition occurs when $b = \lambda$. Under the AdS/CFT correspondence, asymptotically AdS geometries with backreaction can be viewed as CFT states subject to a renormalization group (RG) flow from an ultraviolet (UV) description towards an infrared (IR) sector. For black holes however, the IR point is the horizon, so one way to interpret the interior is as an analytic continuation to a "trans-IR" imaginary-energy regime. In this paper, we demonstrate that this analytic continuation preserves some imprints of the UV physics, particularly near its "endpoint" at the classical singularity. We focus on holographic phase transitions of geometric objects in round black holes. We first assert the consistency of interpreting such black holes, including their interiors, as RG flows by constructing a monotonic $a$-function. We then explore how UV phase transitions of entanglement entropy and scalar two-point functions, each of which are encoded by bulk geometry under the holographic mapping, are connected to the structure of the near-singularity geometry, which is characterized by Kasner exponents. Using 2d holographic flows triggered by relevant scalar deformations as test beds, we find that the 3d bulk's near-singularity Kasner exponents can be viewed as functions of the UV physics precisely when the deformation is nonzero., Comment: 37 pages + references, 8 figures; v2: references added

One characteristic feature of many fractonic lattice models, and a defining property of the exotic field theories developed to describe them, are subsystem symmetries including a conservation of not just net electric charge but also electric dipole moments or charges living on submanifolds. So far all such theories were based on internal subsystem symmetries. We study the boundary theory of the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ X-cube model using a continuum perspective, from which the exchange statistics of a subset of bulk excitations can be recovered. We discuss various gapped boundary conditions that either preserve or break the translation/rotation symmetries on the boundary, and further present the corresponding ground state degeneracies on $T^2\times I$. The low-energy physics is highly sensitive to the boundary conditions: even the extensive part of the ground state degeneracy can vary when different sets of boundary conditions are chosen on the two boundaries. We also examine the anomaly inflow of the boundary theory and find that the X-cube model is not the unique (3+1)d theory that cancels the 't Hooft anomaly of the boundary., Comment: v2

JT gravity has a first-order formulation as a two-dimensional BF theory, which can be viewed as the dimensional reduction of the Chern-Simons description of $3d$ gravity. We consider $T\bar{T}$-type deformations of the $(0+1)$-dimensional dual to this $2d$ BF theory and interpret the deformation as a modification of the BF theory boundary conditions. The fundamental observables in this deformed BF theory, and in its $3d$ Chern-Simons lift, are Wilson lines and loops. In the $3d$ Chern-Simons setting, we study modifications to correlators involving boundary-anchored Wilson lines which are induced by a $T\bar{T}$ deformation on the $2d$ boundary; results are presented at both the classical level (using modified boundary conditions) and the quantum-mechanical level (using conformal perturbation theory). Finally, we calculate the analogous deformed Wilson line correlators in $2d$ BF theory below the Hagedorn temperature where the principal series dominates over the discrete series., Comment: 92 pages

We define a manifestly supersymmetric version of the $T \overline{T}$ deformation appropriate for a class of $(0+1)$-dimensional theories with $\mathcal{N} = 1$ or $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supersymmetry, including one presentation of the super-Schwarzian theory which is dual to JT supergravity. These deformations are written in terms of Noether currents associated with translations in superspace, so we refer to them collectively as $f(\mathcal{Q})$ deformations. We provide evidence that the $f(\mathcal{Q})$ deformations of $\mathcal{N} = 1$ and $\mathcal{N} = 2$ theories are on-shell equivalent to the dimensionally reduced supercurrent-squared deformations of $2d$ theories with $\mathcal{N} = (0,1)$ and $\mathcal{N} = (1,1)$ supersymmetry, respectively. In this study, we introduce an online public quantum computation platform, named as ScQ, based on a 1D array of a 10-qubit superconducting processor. Single-qubit rotation gates can be performed on each qubit. Controlled-NOT gates between nearest-neighbor sites on the 1D array of 10 qubits are available. We show the online preparation and verification of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states of up to 10 qubits through this platform for all possible blocks of qubits in the chain. The graphical user interface and quantum assembly language methods are presented to achieve the above tasks, which rely on a parameter scanning feature implemented on ScQ. The performance of this quantum computation platform, such as fidelities of logic gates and details of the superconducting device, are presented.

We investigate multipartite entanglement of the quantum Ising model with transverse fields for a slow quantum quench crossing a critical point. The multipartite entanglement is quantified by quantum Fisher information with the generator defined as the operator of the ferromagnetic order parameter due to the system symmetry. The quench dynamics begin with the ground state of the large transverse field in the paramagnetic phase, and then the transverse field is driven slowly to cross a quantum critical point and ends with a zero transverse field. Based on methods of matrix product state, we calculate the quantum Fisher information density of the final state. Numerical results of both linear and nonlinear quench show that the quantum Fisher information density of the final state scales as a power law of the quench rate, which has an opposite exponent of the Kibble-Zurek scaling. Our results reveal that the multipartite entanglement provides a new viewpoint to understand the dynamics of quantum phase transition. Based on the observation of entanglement in the quenched state, we also expect that our result would inspire approaches for preparing multipartite entangled states in quantum information processing.

Sharpening the holographic correspondence of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity and its dual matrix model description at a finite radial cutoff $\lambda$ through the $T\overline{T}$ deformation is of interest. To proceed, we simplify the problem by considering the Airy model and deform Airy correlators in the same way as in $T\overline{T}$-deformed JT gravity. We use those correlators to compute the annealed and quenched free energies for both $\lambda > 0$ and $\lambda < 0$ from an integral representation of the replica trick. At the leading order in $\lambda$ and low temperatures, we confirm that the genus-zero quenched free energy monotonically decreases as a function of temperature when perturbation theory is valid. We then study the all-genus quenched free energy at low temperatures, where we discover and discuss subtleties due to non-perturbative effects in the Airy model, as well as the contributions from the non-perturbative branch under the $T\overline{T}$ deformation., Comment: 47 Pages, 16 Figures

Superconformal field theory with $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry in four dimensional spacetime provides a prime playground to study strongly coupled phenomena in quantum field theory. Its rigid structure ensures valuable analytic control over non-perturbative effects, yet the theory is still flexible enough to incorporate a large landscape of quantum systems. Here we aim to offer a guidebook to fundamental features of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories and basic tools to construct them in string/M-/F-theory. We study worldvolume actions for D-branes coupled to the worldvolume U(1) gauge field and Ramond-Ramond (RR) potentials in nonrelativistic string theory. This theory is a self-contained corner of relativistic string theory and has a string spectrum with a Galilean-invariant dispersion relation. We therefore refer to such D-branes in nonrelativistic string theory as nonrelativistic D-branes. We focus on the bosonic fields in spacetime and also couple the D-branes to general closed string geometry, Kalb-Ramond, and dilaton background fields. We dualize nonrelativistic D-branes by performing a duality transformation on the worldvolume U(1) gauge field and uncover novel dual D-brane actions. This generalizes familiar properties, such as the SL(2,Z) duality in Type IIB superstring theory and the relation between Type IIA superstring and M-theory, to nonrelativistic string and M-theory. Moreover, we generalize the limit of string theory, in which nonrelativistic string theory arises, to include RR potentials. This stringy limit induces a codimension-two foliation structure in spacetime. This spacetime geometry is non-Riemannian and known as string Newton-Cartan geometry. In contrast, nonrelativistic M-theory that we probe by dualizing D2- and D4-branes in nonrelativistic string theory arises as a membrane limit of M-theory, and it is coupled to a membrane Newton-Cartan geometry with a codimension-three foliation structure. We study the entanglement entropy in 1+1 dimensional conformal field theories in the presence of interfaces from a holographic perspective. Compared with the well-known case of boundary conformal field theories, interfaces allow for several interesting new observables. Depending on how the interface is located within the entangling region, the entanglement entropies differ and exhibit surprising new patterns and universal relations. We formulate a version of the information paradox in de Sitter spacetime and show that it is solved by the emergence of entanglement islands in the context of the DS/dS correspondence; in particular, the entanglement entropy of a subregion obeys a time-dependent Page curve. Our construction works in general spacetime dimensions and keeps the graviton massless. We interpret the resulting behavior of the entanglement entropy using double holography. It suggests that the spatial distribution of microscopic degrees of freedom depends on descriptions, as in the case of a black hole. In the static (distant) description of de Sitter (black hole) spacetime, these degrees of freedom represent microstates associated with the Gibbons-Hawking (Bekenstein-Hawking) entropy and are localized toward the horizon. On the other hand, in a global (effective two-sided) description, which is obtained by the quantum analog of analytic continuation and is intrinsically semiclassical, they are distributed uniformly and in a unique semiclassical de Sitter (black hole) vacuum state., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; references added

We extend the holographic duality between 3d pure gravity and the 2d Ising CFT proposed in [Phys. Rev. D 85 (2012) 024032] to CFTs with boundaries. Besides the usual asymptotic boundary, the dual bulk spacetime now has a real cutoff, on which live branes with finite tension, giving Neumann boundary condition on the metric tensor. The strongly coupled bulk theory requires that we dress the well-known semiclassical AdS/BCFT answer with boundary gravitons, turning the partition function into the form of Virasoro characters. Using this duality, we relate the brane tensions to the modular S-matrix elements of the dual BCFT and derive the transformation between gravitational solutions with different brane tensions under modular S action., Comment: 16+8 pages, v3

We calculate the $\mathcal{S}$-multiplets for two-dimensional Euclidean $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ and $\mathcal{N} = (2,2)$ superconformal field theories under the $T\overline{T}$ deformation at leading order of perturbation theory in the deformation coupling. Then, from these $\mathcal{N} = (0, 2)$ deformed multiplets, we calculate two- and three-point correlators. We show the $\mathcal{N} = (0,2)$ chiral ring's elements do not flow under the $T\overline{T}$ deformation. Specializing to integrable supersymmetric seed theories, such as $\mathcal{N} = (2,2)$ Landau-Ginzburg models, we use the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz to study the S-matrices and ground state energies. From both an S-matrix perspective and Melzer's folding prescription, we show that the deformed ground state energy obeys the inviscid Burgers' equation. We study the supersymmetric partition function of a 2d linear $\sigma$-model whose target space is a torus with a complex structure that varies along one worldsheet direction and a K\"ahler modulus that varies along the other. This setup is inspired by the dimensional reduction of a Janus configuration of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $U(1)$ Super-Yang-Mills theory compactified on a mapping torus ($T^2$ fibered over $S^1$) times a circle with an $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality wall inserted on $S^1$, but our setup has minimal supersymmetry. The partition function depends on two independent elements of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$, one describing the duality twist, and the other describing the geometry of the mapping torus. It is topological and can be written as a multivariate quadratic Gauss sum. By calculating the partition function in two different ways, we obtain identities relating different quadratic Gauss sums, generalizing the {\it Landsberg-Schaar} relation. These identities are a subset of a collection of identities discovered by F. Deloup. Each identity contains a phase which is an eighth root of unity, and we show how it arises as a Berry phase in the supersymmetric Janus-like configuration. We holographically calculate the partition functions of certain types of isotropic sectors of the CFTs dual to Bruhat-Tits trees and $p$-adic BTZ black holes. Along the way, we propose new spectral decompositions of the Laplacian operator other than the plane-wave basis on these two types of background, with both analytical and numerical evidence. We extract the density of states and hence entropy from the BTZ partition function via the inverse Laplace transform. Then the one-loop Witten diagram is computed in the $p$-adic BTZ black hole background, yielding constraints on the heavy-heavy-light averaged three-point coefficient of its boundary $p$-adic CFT. Finally, for general $p$-adic CFTs (not necessarily holographic), we analyze the representation theory of their global conformal group $PGL\left(2,\mathbb{Q}_p\right)$, and discuss the suitability of different representations as Hilbert spaces of $p$-adic CFT., Comment: v3: 59 pages; published version

We study 3D pure Einstein quantum gravity with negative cosmological constant, in the regime where the AdS radius $l$ is of the order of the Planck scale. Specifically, when the Brown-Henneaux central charge $c=3l/2G_N$ ($G_N$ is the 3D Newton constant) equals $c=1/2$, we establish duality between 3D gravity and 2D Ising conformal field theory by matching gravity and conformal field theory partition functions for AdS spacetimes with general asymptotic boundaries. This duality was suggested by a genus-one calculation of Castro et al. [Phys. Rev. D {\bf 85}, 024032 (2012)]. Extension beyond genus-one requires new mathematical results based on 3D Topological Quantum Field Theory; these turn out to uniquely select the $c=1/2$ theory among all those with $c<1$, extending the previous results of Castro et al.. Previous work suggests the reduction of the calculation of the gravity partition function to a problem of summation over the orbits of the mapping class group action on a "vacuum seed". But whether or not the summation is well-defined for the general case was unknown before this work. We calculate the topological entanglement entropy (TEE) in Euclidean asymptotic AdS3 spacetime using surgery. The treatment is intrinsically three-dimensional. In the BTZ black hole background, several different bipartitions are applied. For the bipartition along the horizon between two single-sided black holes, TEE is exactly the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, which supports the ER=EPR conjecture in the Euclidean case. For other bipartitions, we derive an Entangling-Thermal relation for each single-sided black hole, which is of topological origin. After summing over genus-one classical geometries, we compute TEE in the high-temperature regime. In the case where k=1, we find that TEE is the same as that for a Moonshine double state, given by the maximally-entangled superposition of 194 types of "anyons" in the 3d bulk, labeled by the irreducible representations of the Monster group. We propose this as the bulk analogue of the thermofield double state in the Euclidean spacetime. Comparing the TEE between thermal AdS3 and BTZ solutions, we discuss the implication of TEE on the Hawking-Page transition in 3d., Comment: version 2

A toy model of the fractional quantum Hall effect appears as part of the low-energy description of the Coulomb branch of the $A_1$ (2,0)-theory formulated on $(S^1\times R^2)/Z_k$, where the generator of $Z_k$ acts as a combination of translation on $S^1$ and rotation by $2\pi/k$ on $R^2$. At low energy the configuration is described in terms of a 4+1D Super-Yang-Mills theory on a cone ($R^2/Z_k$) with additional 2+1D degrees of freedom at the tip of the cone that include fractionally charged particles. These fractionally charged quasi-particles are BPS strings of the (2,0)-theory wrapped on short cycles. We analyze the large $k$ limit, where a smooth cigar-geometry provides an alternative description. In this framework a W-boson can be modeled as a bound state of $k$ quasi-particles. The W-boson becomes a Q-ball, and it can be described as a soliton solution of Bogomolnyi monopole equations on a certain auxiliary curved space. We show that axisymmetric solutions of these equations correspond to singular maps from $AdS_3$ to $AdS_2$, and we present some numerical results and an asymptotic expansion., Comment: 44 pages, 4 figures, new version includes corrections to typos and corrections to section 3

We develop an equivalence between two Hilbert spaces: (i) the space of states of $U(1)^n$ Chern-Simons theory with a certain class of tridiagonal matrices of coupling constants (with corners) on $T^2$; and (ii) the space of ground states of strings on an associated mapping torus with $T^2$ fiber. The equivalence is deduced by studying the space of ground states of $SL(2,Z)$-twisted circle compactifications of $U(1)$ gauge theory, connected with a Janus configuration, and further compactified on $T^2$. The equality of dimensions of the two Hilbert spaces (i) and (ii) is equivalent to a known identity on determinants of tridiagonal matrices with corners.
