14. Unlocking the Catalytic Potential of Platinum Single Atoms for Industry‐Level Current Density Chlorine Tolerance Hydrogen Generation.

Abstract

Immobilizing platinum (Pt) single atoms on appropriate supports with optimized coordination environments and electronic structures is a promising strategy to address the problem of chlorine corrosion during seawater electrolysis. Herein, Pt single atoms on nickel‐vanadium layered double hydroxides (Pt‐SA/NiV‐LDH) matrix are fabricated for chlorine tolerance hydrogen generation. Due to the strong synergetic electronic interaction between atomically dispersed Pt and the ultrathin NiV LDH matrix, the adsorption/dissociation feature of *H2O, *OH, and *H are optimized as evidenced theoretically. The as‐fabricated Pt‐SA/NiV‐LDH electrode exhibits an exceptional mass activity (i.e., 30.98 times higher) compared to the commercial Pt/C, along with an ultra‐high turnover frequency (TOF) value of 9.90 s−1 in alkaline media. Impressively, only 207 mV overpotential is required to yield a current density of 2000 mA cm‒2 in an electrolyte solution containing 1 m KOH and 2 M NaCl, indicating its robust resistance to chlorine. Moreover, this kind of material demonstrates remarkably low overpotentials of 130 and 215 mV to attain the industrial‐scale current densities of 1000 and 2000 mA cm−2 in alkaline seawater, accompanied by exceptional stability for 500 h working at 500 mA cm−2. 42. Atomic Metal–Support Interaction Enables Reconstruction-Free Dual-Site Electrocatalyst

Abstract

Real bifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction have to be the ones that exhibit a steady configuration during/after reaction without irreversible structural transformation or surface reconstruction. Otherwise, they can be termed as “precatalysts” rather than real catalysts. Herein, through a strongly atomic metal–support interaction, single-atom dispersed catalysts decorating atomically dispersed Ru onto a nickel–vanadium layered double hydroxide (LDH) scaffold can exhibit excellent HER and OER activities. Both in situX-ray absorption spectroscopy and operando Raman spectroscopic investigation clarify that the presence of atomic Ru on the surface of nickel–vanadium LDH is playing an imperative role in stabilizing the dangling bond-rich surface and further leads to a reconstruction-free surface. Through strong metal–support interaction provided by nickel–vanadium LDH, the significant interplay can stabilize the reactive atomic Ru site to reach a small fluctuation in oxidation state toward cathodic HER without reconstruction, while the atomic Ru site can stabilize the Ni site to have a greater structural tolerance toward both the bond constriction and structural distortion caused by oxidizing the Ni site during anodic OER and boost the oxidation state increase in the Ni site that contributes to its superior OER performance. Unlike numerous bifunctional catalysts that have suffered from the structural reconstruction/transformation for adapting the HER/OER cycles, the proposed Ru/Ni3V-LDH is characteristic of steady dual reactive sites with the presence of a strong metal–support interaction (i.e., Ru and Ni sites) for individual catalysis in water splitting and is revealed to be termed as a real bifunctional electrocatalyst.

47. Template-Directed Bifunctional Dodecahedral CoP/CN@MoS2Electrocatalyst for High Efficient Water Splitting

Abstract

Designing high efficient and noble metal-free bifunctional electrocatalysts for both hydrogen and oxygen generation is still critical and challenged. In this study, hierarchical dodecahedral-structured CoP/CN@MoS2is prepared through a two-step calcination treatment and a solvothermal approach. The metal–organic framework of ZIF-67 is chosen to serve as the template and for providing Co sources, in which ZIF-67 is first transformed to Co nanoparticles embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon polyhedrons and then transformed to CoP/CN. MoS2nanosheets are further grown on the surface of dodecahedral-structured CoP/CN with a solvothermal method. Benefiting from the synergistic coupling effect of CoP and MoS2and the nitrogen-doped carbon matrix, advanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) both in acid and alkaline solution as well as splendid oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in alkaline aqueous were achieved. Moreover, the coupling effect of CoP/CN and MoS2is disclosed theoretically by density functional theory calculations to validate the increased HER activity. The as-prepared hybrid CoP/CN@MoS2not only exhibits decent HER activity in acidic (η10= 144 mV) and alkaline solutions (η10= 149 mV), but also exhibits splendid OER activity (η10= 289 mV) in 1.0 M KOH. This work represents a solid step toward boosting the electrocatalytic kinetics of nonprecious catalysts.

Abstract

Engineering oxygen vacancies (Vo) in metal–organic framework (MOF) is considered as an effective strategy to improve the hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) performance. However, the role of Vo and the metal sites for HzOR is still not fully understood. Herein, this study reports the synthesis of a well‐defined bimetallic VO‐rich benzene dicarboxylic acid‐based MOF (NiIr0.03‐BDC) as a model to clarify the intricate catalytic mechanism. Operando characterizations demonstrate that the Vo‐rich environment favors the adsorption of OH− on the catalyst surface during the HzOR process, leading to the formation of Ni(OH)x active species. Theoretical calculations reveal that the introduced Ir at metal nodes not only boosts the HzOR activity of the Ni sites by tuning their electronic structure but also serves as the active sites for hydrogen evolution. As a result, the two‐electrode electrolyzer with NiIr0.03‐BDC || NiIr0.03‐BDC configuration achieved 10 mA cm−2 at an ultralow cell voltage of 0.046 V. This work provides new insights into oxygen vacancy defect engineering of MOFs and paves a solid step for low‐energy consumption hydrogen production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
