2. Metasurface array for single-shot spectroscopic ellipsometry

Abstract

Spectroscopic ellipsometry is a potent method that is widely adopted for the measurement of thin film thickness and refractive index. However, a conventional ellipsometer, which utilizes a mechanically rotating polarizer and grating-based spectrometer for spectropolarimetric detection, is bulky, complex, and does not allow real-time measurements. Here, we demonstrated a compact metasurface array-based spectroscopic ellipsometry system that allows single-shot spectropolarimetric detection and accurate determination of thin film properties without any mechanical movement. The silicon-based metasurface array with a highly anisotropic and diverse spectral response is combined with iterative optimization to reconstruct the full Stokes polarization spectrum of the light reflected by the thin film with high fidelity. Subsequently, the film thickness and refractive index can be determined by fitting the measurement results to a proper material model with high accuracy. Our approach opens up a new pathway towards a compact and robust spectroscopic ellipsometry system for the high throughput measurement of thin film properties.

5. A Personalized Fluid-structure Interaction Modeling Paradigm for Aorta in Human Fetuses

Abstract

Background - Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect and a leading cause of death and chronic illness in newborns, infants, and children. Prenatal screening and identification of CHD are critically important, but their availability and accuracy are limited by current fetal imaging techniques. To date, few models have been developed for fetal circulation. Considering the fetal aorta is frequently affected in CHDs, this study aims to develop and validate a novel model to assess the hemodynamics of the fetal aorta. Methods - Fetal echocardiography (FE) and Doppler were used to build a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) model that assesses the fetal aorta in 3 dimensions. An inverse approach was used to obtain the material property. An iterative method was also proposed to estimate the outflow boundaries. The FSI results have been validated against clinically measured dimensions and velocities over a cardiac cycle for aortas in 4 healthy fetuses. Results - The proposed FSI model has been implemented in 4 healthy fetal aortas representing a range of gestational age (GA = 23.5-36.0 weeks). The iterative method successfully estimated Windkessel parameters that match in vivo measured flow rates at outflow boundaries. The FSI model has been validated using in vivo velocity waveforms at the aortic isthmus. The resultant L2-norm was [12.5%, 16.4%], which is acceptable based on previous simulation studies. Also, the aortic stiffness of the fetal aorta decreased with GA, adding evidence to an existing controversy about the trend between aortic stiffness and GA. Conclusions - This study represents the first-of-its-kind endeavor of a rigorously validated personalized flow model for fetal circulation. The developed FSI model has been successfully validated for four subjects. The model was also used to obtain new evidence of fetal aortic development and growth., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures

27. COVID-19 Exposure, Pandemic-Related Appraisals, Coping Strategies, and Psychological Symptoms among the Frontline Medical Staff and Gender Differences in Coping Processes

Abstract

This study sought to explore the effects of COVID-19 exposure, pandemic-related appraisals and coping strategies on psychological symptoms among the front-line healthcare workers based on the transactional theory of stress and coping. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a Wuhan hospital designated for inpatients with COVID-19, assessing COVID-19 exposure (whether or not exposed to confirmed patients at workplace), psychological symptoms, appraisals, and coping strategies in 311 participants. Results revealed that the pandemic markedly affected healthcare workers' mental well-being through appraisal and coping, with 38.9% reporting high levels of psychological symptoms. Primary appraisal related closely with COVID-19 exposure, especially in female, while secondary appraisal was associated with problem-focused coping. Both problem-focused and emotion-focused coping had a protective effect against psychological symptoms, but also showed gender differences in its relations with other variables. These findings could potentially benefit to enrich relevant theories, and to develop psychological programs for future epidemics.

Abstract

Sepsis is still one of the important challenges of medicine in the 21st century. Dipeptide peptidase Ⅲ(DPP3)is a new biomarker associated with sepsis, which mainly degrades angiotensin Ⅱ in human body. It can not only inhibit cardiac systolic function, but also reduce vascular tension, resulting in insufficient cardiac output and low blood pressure, resulting in shock and multiple organ dysfunctions in patients with sepsis. Therefore, DPP3 may become a new target for sepsis treatment.
