3. Distinguishing Cause and Effect via Second Order Exponential Models

Abstract

We propose a method to infer causal structures containing both discrete and continuous variables. The idea is to select causal hypotheses for which the conditional density of every variable, given its causes, becomes smooth. We define a family of smooth densities and conditional densities by second order exponential models, i.e., by maximizing conditional entropy subject to first and second statistical moments. If some of the variables take only values in proper subsets of R^n, these conditionals can induce different families of joint distributions even for Markov-equivalent graphs. We consider the case of one binary and one real-valued variable where the method can distinguish between cause and effect. Using this example, we describe that sometimes a causal hypothesis must be rejected because P(effect|cause) and P(cause) share algorithmic information (which is untypical if they are chosen independently). This way, our method is in the same spirit as faithfulness-based causal inference because it also rejects non-generic mutual adjustments among DAG-parameters., Comment: 36 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Panicum miliaceum involved in the repair of femur bone fracture in rats. Materials and Methods: In this study, 40 Wistar rats in five groups were studied as healthy, rats with lesion induced by surgery in femur (FX), FX rats treated with P. miliaceum extract (FX +100 and 200 P. miliaceum) and FX rats treated with Osteocare syrup (FX + OC). After 40 days, the serum levels of blood calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) along with activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) enzymes, and nitric oxide (NO) level were measured. The serum level of cytokines (IL-6, C-reactive protein [CRP], IL-10, IL-1β, and tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-α]) was also measured by ELISA. The expression of OPG, RANK, RANKL, and BMP-2 genes and proteins were evaluated by real-time PCR and Western blotting techniques, respectively. Results: The results showed that P. miliaceum was able to decrease the activity of ALP enzyme in addition to increasing serum Ca and P levels and GPx, SOD, and CAT activity. P. miliaceum reduces serum IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α, and NO levels. Also, the extract of this plant could increase the expression of OPG/RANK/BMP-2 pathway genes and proteins. Conclusion: P. miliaceum can be used as a prodrug in traditional medicine to repair bone fractures and osteoporosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The current study brings natural resources, and tourism into the energy-growth, and environment nexus using the STIRPAT model for 88 BRI countries over 1995–2015. Considering the endogeneity, cross-sectional dependence, and slope homogeneity, this study employed dynamic GMM and D&K estimators for three distinct structural equations. For the CO2 equation, the empirical outcomes supported the EKC, energy lead emission, natural resource-based CO2 emissions, and tourism-led CO2 emissions, and on the other hand, renewable energy helps to curb environmental degradation. For the GDP equation, the role of energy, CO2 emissions, tourism development, and renewable energy is positive and contributes significantly to economic growth. The impact of natural resources is negative and significant, thus postulating the "resource curse phenomenon" in BRI countries. For the energy equation, CO2, GDP, and natural resources are escalating energy consumption; while, renewable energy is negatively affecting energy, which indicates that growth in renewable energy tends to discourage the consumption of fossil fuel-based energy in the BRI countries. Abstract

The so-called kernel-based tests of independence are developed for automatic causal discovery between random variables from purely observational statistical data, i.e., without intervention. Beyond the independence relations, the complexity of conditional distriubtions is used as an additional inference principle of determining the causal ordering between variables. Experiments with simulated and real-world data show that the proposed methods surpass the state-of-the-art approaches.
