Abstract

Optimal mechanical impact absorbers are reusable and exhibit high specific energy absorption. The forced intrusion of liquid water in hydrophobic nanoporous materials, such as zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), presents an attractive pathway to engineer such systems. However, to harness their full potential, it is crucial to understand the underlying water intrusion and ex-trusion mechanisms under realistic, high-rate deformation conditions. Herein, we report a critical increase of the energy absorption capacity of confined water-ZIF systems at elevated strain rates. Starting from ZIF-8 as proof-of-concept, we demonstrate that this attractive rate depend-ence is generally applicable to cage-type ZIFs but disappears for channel-containing zeolites. Molecular simulations reveal that this phenomenon originates from the intrinsic nanosecond timescale needed for critical-sized water clusters to nucleate inside the nanocages, expediting water transport through the framework. Abstract

We present the frequency-dependant (dynamic) dielectric response of a group of topical polycrystalline zeolitic imidazolate-based metal-organic framework (MOF) materials in the extended infrared spectral region. Using synchrotron-based FTIR spectroscopy in specular reflectance, in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we have revealed detailed structure-property trends linking the THz region dielectric response to framework porosity and structural density. The work demonstrates that MOFs are promising candidate materials not only for low-\k{appa} electronics applications but could also be pioneering for terahertz (THz) applications, such as next-generation broadband communications technologies., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

12. Comparison of physico-chemical characteristics of myrtle at different ripening stages

Abstract

The fruits of myrtle at different stages of development, namely green (G), colour break (C) and mature (M), were used to investigate the changes of fruit quality and anthocyanin composition during its development. Five anthocyanin components, such as delphinidin (Dp), cyanidin (Cy), pelargonidin (Pg), peonidin (Pn) and malvidin (Mv), were detected. Among them, the content of Dp glucoside was the highest (2.12 μg · g−1) and the content of Pn glucoside was the lowest (0.17 μg · g−1) at the green stage. The content of Cy glucoside was the highest (120.94 and 1,200.03 μg · g−1), and the content of Mv glucoside was the lowest (19.50 and 62.72 μg · g−1) at the colour break and mature stages. The single fruit weight, vertical diameter and transverse diameter at the mature stage were significantly higher than those at the colour break and the green stages by 0.87 g, 1.27 mm, 1.53 mm and 1.54 g, 3.4 mm, 3.55 mm, respectively. Fruit quality, the contents of soluble sugar and carotenoids, gradually increased with the development of fruit; and the contents were the highest at the mature stage (17.68% and 16.90 μg · L−1). The contents of titratable acidity, total phenol, flavonoids, chlorophyll a and total chlorophyll gradually decreased with the development of fruit, the content was the lowest at the mature stage (2.71 mmol · 100 g−1, 9.29 μg · g−1, 0.1%, 0.37 μg · L−1, 0.9 μg · L−1) and the content was the highest at the green stage (5.25 mmol · 100 g−1, 21.07 μg · g−1, 0.17%, 8.86 μg · L−1, 15.47 μg · L−1). The difference between the green period and the colour break period was significant.

Abstract

Sericin is a natural protein with high application potential, but the research on its efficacy is very limited. In this study, the anti-inflammatory mechanism of sericin protein was investigated. Firstly, the protein composition of sericin extracts was determined by Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). This was then combined with Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and Quantitative Real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), and it was confirmed that the anti-inflammation ability of sericin was positively correlated with the purity of sericin 1 protein. Finally, RNA-seq was performed to quantify the inhibitory capacity of sericin sample SS2 in LPS-stimulated macrophages. The gene functional annotation showed that SS2 suppressed almost all PRRs signaling pathways activated by lipopolysaccharides (LPS), such as the Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and NOD-like receptors (NLRs) signaling pathways. The expression level of adaptor gene MyD88 and receptor gene NOD1 was significantly down-regulated after SS2 treatment. SS2 also reduced the phosphorylation levels of NF-κB P65, P38, and JNK, thereby reducing the expressions of IL-1β, IL-6, INOS, and other inflammatory cytokines. It was confirmed that sericin inhibited LPS-induced inflammation through MyD88/NF-κB pathway. This finding provides necessary theoretical support for sericin development and application. Abstract

Objectives: The development of virtual reality (VR) has exerted an enormous impact on higher education. However, the VR application in dental education is still at an early stage in China. This study explored the usability of a VR application in training the practical skills of dental students. Methods: We first utilized the "system usability scale" (SUS) to verify the validity of the VR application in this study. Next, the VR training on orthodontic bracket bonding was experienced by the participants. The subsequent survey was delivered to collect the participants' perception and evaluation of the VR system application in training the practical skills of prospective dentists. Results: The SUS score was 76.17 ± 9.89, suggesting an above‐average evaluation of the system's usability and maturity. The response from the questionnaire supplied relatively positive responses to the VR system application on "user experiences," "perceived usefulness of VR application on orthodontics," and "perceived ease of manipulation." The male students exhibited strong interest in manipulating the VR system and were more capable of manipulating the VR system than the female students. VR experience did not affect the participants' responses to the questions. Conclusions: Overall, the use of VR in dental education achieved the expected outcomes. Most students identified the VR training as an enjoyable learning process, and it could be repetitively experienced without further costs, which might have potential positive effects on long‐term learning outcomes, although there is room to further improve the effectiveness evaluation of VR. Abstract

The mechanical behavior of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) significantly influences crashworthiness and energy mitigation abilities of windshields in terms of pedestrian safety. In this article, mechanical characteristics of PVB are experimentally studied. First, tension and compression experiments on PVB specimen are carried out under various quasi-static loading rates. Fundamental mechanism of rate-dependent behavior is investigated. Besides, dynamic tension and compression experimental data are compared to investigate the mechanical behavior of PVB in a whole strain rate region and it is found that PVB behaves as a viscoelastic material under compressive loadings in both quasi-static and dynamic situations; however, intension experiments, stress-strain curves of PVB under dynamic loadings are elastoplastic while those under quasi-static loadings are viscoelastic. Considering all the unique characteristics of PVB's behavior, constitutive models are then established based on Zhu-Wang-Tang model mathematically. Further, unit volume energy absorption of every experiment in quasi-static tension and compression are calculated as well as the stress intensify factor. In addition, visco-elasticity part in the constitutive model is employed. Results may offer useful experiment data and important constitutive characteristics of PVB material to further studies of automotive crashworthiness and pedestrian protection. POLYM. ENG. Abstract

In order to adapt to the development needs of new load access to rural power grids, solve the problem of low utilization efficiency of related equipment, and take into account economy and power supply reliability, this paper proposes a distributed optimization planning method for rural transformers considering new load and low-voltage side interconnection. First, this paper establishs a load forecasting model that considers new types of loads such as electric heating; secondly, it builds a distributed distribution transformer network planning model with the goal of minimizing overall costs, and applys the Voronoi method to plan distribution transformers; finally, it combines the location of the distribution transformer and its power supply Scope, using the minimum spanning tree theory of graph theory to generate low-voltage line layout schemes. This paper is based on Matlab R2014a simulation platform to plan the distribution of typical power supply areas. The results of calculation examples verify the feasibility of this method, which can improve the economy and reliability of power supply by reducing losses.

Abstract

Fe 76 Si 9 B 10 P 5 /Zn 0.5 Ni 0.5 Fe 2 O 4 amorphous composite with micro-cellular structure and high electrical resistivity was prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 487 °C. XRD and SEM results showed that the Fe 76 Si 9 B 10 P 5 alloy powders remained the amorphous state and the composite was dense. A fusion zone at interface of Fe 76 Si 9 B 10 P 5 cell body and Zn 0.5 Ni 0.5 Fe 2 O 4 cell wall was observed by TEM, which also indicates the formation of local high temperature. The interface bonding based on the formation of local high temperature in SPS process was observed. It is believed that the tip effect of Zn 0.5 Ni 0.5 Fe 2 O 4 nanoparticles promotes the local discharging and plasmas creation in the gaps, and the discharging energy forms an instantaneous local high temperature to complete the local sintering and the densification of Zn 0.5 Ni 0.5 Fe 2 O 4 particles at a low nominal sinter temperature. Simultaneously, the local high temperature stimulates the adjacent gaps discharging, thus facilitate the continuous formation of new discharging path. Finally, sintering and densification of the amorphous composite is complete.
