15. Mechanism of Early Stage Corrosion for Boric-sulfuric Acid Anodized 2A97 Al-Cu-Li Alloy Under Tropical Marine Atmosphere

Abstract

Optical microscopy(OM), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), EDX and EIS combined with ultramicrotomy were employed to investigate the micro morphology, chemical composition and electrochemical properties of anodized 2A97 Al-Cu-Li alloy before and after atmospheric corrosion. The results show that when electrolytes containing combinations of tartaric-sulfuric or boric-sulfuric acid are used to grow the films at different temperatures, boric acid addition and higher temperature allow for higher current density that speeds up the film growth. The pore geometry and structure is similar for different electrolytes. Dispersive dark rusty spots composed of O, Al, Cl, Cu are present on the boric-sulfuric acid anodized specimen after exposure in tropical marine atmosphere for 1 month. Deposition of white corrosion product is found on the specimen surface as well. Severe pitting occurs and develops deeply into the alloy substrate after elongated outdoor exposure. Corrosion propagation is associated with θ-phase particles.

Abstract

We study the structures of Ag adatom clusters supported on the metal Ag(111) surface using the genetic algorithm (GA). The atomic interactions are modelled by the surface-embedded-atom method. The lowest-energy structures of adatom clusters with sizes n = 3–20 are obtained, in which n = 7, 10, 12, 14, 16, 19 are the magic numbers. Furthermore, we give a series of structures with energies close to the lowest energy (the lower-energy isomers), and the structure features are studied in detail. Except for some magic clusters and small clusters, every configuration of adatom clusters generally has two distinct adsorption ways, so the isomers always appear in pairs.

Abstract

The kinetic characteristics of hydroxamate-based inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-12 were explored using an SPR biosensor-based assay and enzyme inhibition analysis. These high-affinity inhibitors were shown to dissociate very slowly from the enzyme-inhibitor complex while a carboxylate analogue had a much faster dissociation rate, verifying the importance of the hydroxamate group for the slow dissociation. Progress curve enzyme inhibition analysis confirmed that the hydroxamate compounds but not the carboxylate compound acted as time-dependent inhibitors. The slow dissociation excluded steady-state estimation of IC50-values and K-i values but also made K-i values from progress curve analysis unreliable. Although a full characterization of the inhibitors using biosensor analysis was limited by slow dissociation, it provided kinetic and mechanistic information of relevance for MMP drug discovery and avoided some pitfalls of conventional enzyme inhibition assays.
