Selenium modification has been proved to further enhance the chitosan bioactivities, and has been a hot topic recently.Methods: The present study aimed to investigate the potential inhibitory mechanism of selenium-modified chitosan (SMC) on HepG2 cells through MTT assays, morphological observation, annexin V–FITC/PI double staining, mitochondrial membrane potential determination, cell-cycle detection, Western blotting, and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE).Results: The results indicated that SMC can induce HepG2 cell apoptosis with the cell cycle arrested in the S and G2/M phases and gradual disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential, reduce the expression of Bcl2, and improve the expression of Bax, cytochrome C, cleaved caspase 9, and cleaved caspase 3. Also, 2-DE results showed that tubulin α1 B chain, myosin regulatory light chain 12A, calmodulin, UPF0568 protein chromosome 14 open reading frame 166, and the cytochrome C oxidase subunit 5B of HepG2 cells were downregulated in HepG2 cells after SMC treatment.Discussion: These data suggested that HepG2 cells induced apoptosis after SMC treatment via blocking the cell cycle in the S and G2/M phases, which might be mediated through the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway. Patients in both groups received routine nursing care. On the basis of routine nursing, patients in the intervention group also received EBN. Self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), self-rating depression scale (SDS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Patient Health Questionnaire-15 (PHQ-15) were used to assess patients’ anxiety, depression, sleep quality, and somatic symptoms at baseline (T0) and 6 months after intervention (T1), respectively.Results: There was no difference in SAS, SDS, PSQI, and PHQ-15 scores at T0 between the 2 groups (all P > 0.05). Comparing to the control group, the intervention group had significantly lower SAS and SDS scores at T1 (P = 0.002, P < 0.001, respectively). The SAS and SDS score changes (T1-T0) were more evident in the intervention group than in the control group (all P < 0.001). No difference of PSQI or PHQ-15 score between the 2 groups was observed at T1. However, the PSQI and PHQ-15 score changes were more evident in the intervention group than in the control group (P = 0.044 and P = 0.007, respectively).Conclusion: EBN invention significantly improved anxiety, depression, sleep quality and somatic symptoms of patients with AIS.Keywords: stroke, outcome, stroke aftercare, evidence-based nursing, post-stroke complications, somatic dysfunction, emotional distress

Methods: Flow cytometry was carried out including Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining, PI staining, Terminal dUTP nick-end labeling, CD3-FITC/CD19-PE and CD8-FITC/CD4-PE double staining. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and polymerase chain reaction were also investigated.Results: According to our experiments, we demonstrated that no signs of apoptosis in thymocytes were found in H22-bearing mice, while the proportions of CD4+ T cells and CD8+ T cells in thymuses were remarkably increased, the opposite tendency was found in peripheral bloods, and only CD3+CD8+ T cells were discovered in H22 solid tumors. We further discovered that the level of thymosin alpha 1 (Tα1) and the expression of Wnt4 in thymus of H22-bearing mice were significantly improved than control, which indicated the active proliferation and differentiation of thymocytes. Our study revealed that CD8+ T cells could not effectively eliminate H22 cells independently when CD4+ T cells were suppressed by tumors, while the body would only enhance the differentiation and maturation of T cells in thymuses and release them to solid tumor to reinforce antitumor immunocompetence, leading to a vicious cycle which finally led to thymic atrophy. Conclusion: Our data propose a novel mechanism of tumor-induced thymic atrophy regulated by abnormal immunoreaction and may provide new ideas for the immunotherapy of tumors. In the past, the fiber bundles were mostly meshed for computing the mechanical properties of the unit cell in fabric composites. Consequently, not only the degrees of freedom but also the complexities in computation are increased. To improve the efficiency in analysis, in this study, a previously developed spring model was extended to predict the effective elastic moduli of three-dimensional (four-step) braided tubes. In the meanwhile, a related compression test was conducted to validate the computational results. It is shown that the results from the computation agree well with the experimental results. In addition, the effects of fabric parameters (such as surface braid angle and fiber volume fraction in a fan-shaped unit cell) on the effective elastic moduli of three-dimensional (four-step) braided tubes were also investigated. Infertility is not a fatal disease but it really produces infertility-related stress and affects individuals' quality of life to a great extent. This study aims to investigate the relations among infertility-related stress, negative emotions and quality of life in infertile outpatients, and suppose gender difference as well as Dark Triad, which contained three dark personality traits: Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy, would moderate the relations. 105 infertile outpatients age range 20-49 completed a cross-sectional questionnaire on the Fertility Quality of Life scale, the Fertility Problem Inventory, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale a the Chinese version of Dirty Dozen. Results showed that negative emotions mediated the relations between infertility-related stress and quality of life. Dark Triad could not moderate the relations between infertility-related stress, negative emotions, and quality of life, but gender can moderate the associations between infertility-related stress and negative emotions. Specifically, the association between infertility-related stress and negative emotions was stronger in men than in women. Infertility-related stress has direct and indirect effects on infertile outpatients' quality of life. This qualitative study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of community rehabilitation programs for children with developmental delays from the perspective of early intervention service providers in Taiwan. Adopting a single-case experimental design (ABM design), this study examined the immediate and sustained effects of interventions on individualized goals during baseline, intervention, and maintenance phases. Additionally, data from interviews with parents, special education teachers, and other participants were collected to understand the challenges and improvement strategies of community rehabilitation programs. Results revealed that community rehabilitation programs for children with developmental delays exhibited both immediate and sustained effectiveness. Challenges faced by parents and professionals differed, with parents having less contact and communication with administrative systems, while professionals experienced more pronounced implementation difficulties during interventions. Moreover, strategies for improving community rehabilitation programs for children with developmental delays should vary for parents and professionals to address inconsistencies in attitudes and strategies among parents and administrative obstacles encountered by professionals.

Although the Bacille-Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine is used to prevent tuberculosis, it also offers protection against a diverse range of non-mycobacterial infections. However, the underlying protective mechanisms in humans are not yet fully understood. Here, we surveyed at single-cell resolution the gene expression and chromatin landscape of human bone marrow, aspirated before and 90 days after BCG vaccination or placebo. We showed that BCG alters both the gene expression and epigenetic profiles of human hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). Changes in gene expression occurred primarily within uncommitted stem cells. By contrast, changes in chromatin accessibility were most prevalent within differentiated progenitor cells at sites influenced by Kruppel-like factor (KLF) and early growth response (EGR) transcription factors and were highly correlated (r > 0.8) with the interleukin (IL)-1β secretion capacity of paired peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Background: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of recombinant human endostatin (Rh-endostatin) plus programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) inhibitors and chemotherapy as first-line treatment for advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in a real-world setting., Methods: This was a retrospective study on patients with EGFR/ALK-negative, advanced or metastatic NSCLC. Patients received Rh-endostatin plus PD-1 inhibitors and chemotherapy every three weeks for 4 to 6 cycles. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS), and the secondary endpoints were objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), overall survival (OS), and safety., Results: A total of 68 patients were included in this retrospective analysis. As of data cutoff (December 13, 2022), the median follow-up of 21.4 months (interquartile range [IQR], 8.3-44.4 months). The median PFS and OS was 22.0 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 16.6-27.4) and 31.0 months (95% CI: 23.4-not evaluable [NE]), respectively. The ORR was 72.06% (95% CI: 59.85-82.27%), and DCR was 95.59% (95% CI: 87.64-99.08%). Patients with stage IIIB/IIIC NSCLC had significantly longer median PFS (23.4 vs. 13.2 months), longer median OS (not reached vs. 18.0 months), and higher ORR (89.2% vs. 51.6%) than those with stage IV NSCLC (all p ≤ 0.001). The ORR was higher in patients with high PD-L1 expression (tumor proportion score [TPS] ≥ 50%) than in those with low PD-L1 expression or positive PD-L1 expression (75% vs. 50%, p = 0.025). All patients experienced treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs), and ≥ grade 3 TRAEs occurred in 16 (23.53%) patients., Conclusions: Rh-endostatin combined with PD-1 inhibitors plus chemotherapy as first-line treatment yielded favorable effectiveness with a manageable profile in patients with advanced or metastatic NSCLC, representing a promising treatment modality., (© 2024. Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-induced myocarditis involves intensive immune/inflammation activation; however, its molecular basis is unclear. Here, we show that gasdermin-E (GSDME), a gasdermin family member, drives ICI-induced myocarditis. Pyroptosis mediated by GSDME, but not the canonical GSDMD, is activated in myocardial tissue of mice and cancer patients with ICI-induced myocarditis. Deficiency of GSDME in male mice alleviates ICI-induced cardiac infiltration of T cells, macrophages, and monocytes, as well as mitochondrial damage and inflammation. Restoration of GSDME expression specifically in cardiomyocytes, rather than myeloid cells, in GSDME-deficient mice reproduces ICI-induced myocarditis. Mechanistically, quantitative proteomics reveal that GSDME-dependent pyroptosis promotes cell death and mitochondrial DNA release, which in turn activates cGAS-STING signaling, triggering a robust interferon response and myocardial immune/inflammation activation. Pharmacological blockade of GSDME attenuates ICI-induced myocarditis and improves long-term survival in mice. Our findings may advance the understanding of ICI-induced myocarditis and suggest that targeting the GSDME-cGAS-STING-interferon axis may help prevent and manage ICI-associated myocarditis., (© 2024. Objectives: This study aimed to elucidate the influences of 1p/19q co-deletion on structural connectivity alterations in patients with dominant hemisphere insular diffuse gliomas., Methods: We incorporated 32 cases of left insular gliomas and 20 healthy controls for this study. Using diffusion MRI, we applied correlational tractography, differential tractography, and graph theoretical analysis to explore the potential connectivity associated with 1p/19q co-deletion., Results: The study revealed that the quantitative anisotropy (QA) of key deep medial fiber tracts, including the anterior thalamic radiation, superior thalamic radiation, fornix, and cingulum, had significant negative associations with 1p/19q co-deletion (FDR = 4.72 × 10 -5 ). These tracts are crucial in maintaining the integrity of brain networks. Differential analysis further supported these findings (FWER-corrected p < 0.05). The 1p/19q non-co-deletion group exhibited significantly higher clustering coefficients (FDR-corrected p < 0.05) and reduced betweenness centrality (FDR-corrected p < 0.05) in regions around the tumor compared to HC group. Graph theoretical analysis indicated that non-co-deletion patients had increased local clustering and decreased betweenness centrality in peritumoral brain regions compared to co-deletion patients and healthy controls (FDR-corrected p < 0.05). Additionally, despite not being significant through correction, patients with 1p/19q co-deletion exhibited lower trends in weighted average clustering coefficient, transitivity, small worldness, and global efficiency, while showing higher tendencies in weighted path length compared to patients without the co-deletion., Conclusion: The findings of this study underline the significant role of 1p/19q co-deletion in altering structural connectivity in insular glioma patients. To recover methane from waste activated sludge through anaerobic digestion (AD) is one promising alternative to achieve carbon neutrality for wastewater treatment plants. However, humic acids (HAs) are one of the major compositions in waste activated sludge, and their accumulation performs inhibition effects on AD. This study investigated the potentials of biochar (BC) in alleviating inhibition effects of HAs on AD. Results showed that although the accumulated HAs reduced methane yield by 9.37% compared to control, the highest methane yield, 132.6 mL CH 4 /g VSS, was obtained after adding BC, which was 45.9% higher than that in HA group. Mechanism analysis showed that BC promoted the activities of hydrolase such as protease and α-glucosidase, which were 69.7% and 29.7% higher than those in HA group, respectively. The conversion of short-chain fatty acids was accelerated. In addition, the evolutions of electroactive microorganisms like Clostridium&#95;sensu&#95;stricto&#95;13 and Methanosaeta were consistent with the activitiies of electron transfer and the contents of cytochrome c. Furthermore, parts of HAs rather than all of them were adsorbed by BC, and the remaining free HAs and BC formed synergistic effects on methanogenesis, then both CO 2 reduction and acetoclastic methanogenesis pathways were improved. The joint actions of animals in partnerships or social groups evolve under both natural selection from the wider environment and social selection imposed by other members of the pair or group. We used experimental evolution to investigate how jointly expressed actions evolve upon exposure to a new environmental challenge. Our work focused on the evolution of carrion nest preparation by pairs of burying beetles Nicrophorus vespilloides , a joint activity undertaken by the pair but typically led by the male. In previous work, we found that carrion nest preparation evolved to be faster in experimental populations without post-hatching care (No Care: NC lines) than with post-hatching care (Full Care: FC lines). Here, we investigate how this joint activity evolved. After 15 generations of experimental evolution, we created heterotypic pairs (NC females with FC males and NC males with FC females) and compared their carrion nest making with homotypic NC and FC pairs. We found that pairs with NC males prepared the nest more rapidly than pairs with FC males, regardless of the female's line of origin. We discuss how social coadaptations within pairs or groups could act as a post-mating barrier to gene flow.

A theoretical construction of an antiferromagnetic polymer multilayered field-effect transistor with polymers stretched between the source and drain contacts was undertaken. The model employed a quantum approach to the on-chain spin-charge distribution, which was self-consistently coupled with the charge distribution controlled by the gate voltage. Contrary to standard field-effect transistors, we found that the current firstly increased superlinearly with the drain voltage, then it achieved the maximum for drain voltages notably lower than the gate voltage, and after that, it decreased with the drain voltage with no saturation. Such effects were coupled with the formation of the current spin-polarization ratio, where the on-chain mobility of respective spin-polarized charges was significantly dependent on the applied drain voltage. These effects arise from competition among the antiferromagnetic coupling, the intra-site spin-dependent Coulomb interaction, and the applied drain and gate voltages, which strongly influence the on-chain spin-charge distribution, varying from an alternating spin configuration to a spin-polarized configuration at both ends of the chain. Substantial control over the magnitude of spin-polarized currents was achieved by manipulating gate and drain voltages, showcasing the feasibility of practical applications in spintronics.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the fluctuating nurse resignation rates highlighted an understudied area in healthcare: post-pandemic challenges in clinical settings. This study, conducted from May to November 2023, employed a qualitative inquiry using focus groups to delve into these challenges. Six focus group sessions, involving 33 nurse participants recruited through snowball sampling from various hospital settings were conducted to explore their clinical experiences during and after the pandemic. Thematic analysis revealed two primary themes: the 'Invisibility of Nurses' within the healthcare system and the 'Moral Duty of Nursing Practice'. These findings illuminate a tension between the overlooked role of nurses and their ethical obligations, underscoring a critical need for policy reassessment. The study advocates for systemic changes, particularly in the undervaluation of the nursing profession and the National Health Insurance system, to address the poor working environment and mitigate long-term nursing shortages. This research deepens understanding of post-pandemic nursing workforce challenges in Taiwan, highlighting the need for policy evolution to enhance recognition and support for the nursing industry. It is suggested to provide tangible compensation to acknowledge nurses' daily care and health education for patients. Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a significant global health issue that poses high mortality and morbidity risks. One commonly observed cause of DILI is acetaminophen (APAP) overdose. GSDME is an effector protein that induces non-canonical pyroptosis. In this study, the activation of GSDME, but not GSDMD, in the liver tissue of mice and patients with APAP-DILI is reported. Knockout of GSDME, rather than GSDMD, in mice protected them from APAP-DILI. Mice with hepatocyte-specific rescue of GSDME reproduced APAP-induced liver injury. Furthermore, alterations in the immune cell pools observed in APAP-induced DILI, such as the replacement of TIM4 + resident Kupffer cells (KCs) by monocyte-derived KCs, Ly6C + monocyte infiltration, MerTk + macrophages depletion, and neutrophil increase, reappeared in mice with hepatocyte-specific rescue of GSDME. Mechanistically, APAP exposure led to a substantial loss of interferon-stimulated gene 15 (ISG15), resulting in deISGylation of carbamoyl phosphate synthetase-1 (CPS1), promoted its degradation via K48-linked ubiquitination, causing ammonia clearance dysfunction. GSDME deletion prevented these effects. Delayed administration of dimethyl-fumarate inhibited GSDME cleavage and alleviated ammonia accumulation, mitigating liver injury. This findings demonstrated a previously uncharacterized role of GSDME in APAP-DILI by promoting pyroptosis and CPS1 deISGylation, suggesting that inhibiting GSDME can be a promising therapeutic option for APAP-DILI., (© 2024 The Authors. Niche theory predicts that ecologically similar species coexist by minimizing interspecific competition through niche partitioning. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms of niche partitioning is essential for predicting interactions and coexistence between competing organisms. Here, we study two phoretic mite species, Poecilochirus carabi and Macrocheles nataliae that coexist on the same host burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides and use it to 'hitchhike' between reproductive sites. Field observations revealed clear spatial partitioning between species in distinct host body parts. Poecilochirus carabi preferred the ventral side of the thorax, whereas M. nataliae were exclusively found ventrally at the hairy base of the abdomen. Experimental manipulations of mite density showed that each species preferred these body parts, largely regardless of the density of the other mite species on the host beetle. Force measurements indicated that this spatial distribution is mediated by biomechanical adaptations, because each mite species required more force to be removed from their preferred location on the beetle. While P. carabi attached with large adhesive pads to the smooth thorax cuticle, M. nataliae gripped abdominal setae with their chelicerae. Our results show that specialist biomechanical adaptations for attachment can mediate spatial niche partitioning among species sharing the same host.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the relationship between taste dysfunction and depression among patients with schizophrenia, to achieve early detection of depression in clinical practice., Methods: Following PRISMA guidance, a comprehensive literature search was conducted globally, covering papers published from 1961 to June 2023. A total of 17 manuscripts were selected through meta-analysis and sensitivity analysis after examining available materials from seven databases to determine the correlation between depression and taste dysfunction., Results: The comparison of the 17 selected manuscripts revealed that individuals with gustatory dysfunction may be more likely to experience depressive symptoms (SMD, 0.51, 95% CI, 0.08 to 0.93, p = 0.02). Depression is associated with taste dysfunction in certain aspects, as indicated by the pleasantness ratings of sucrose solutions (SMD, -0.53, 95% confidence interval [CI] -1.11 to 0.05, p = 0.08), gustatory identification ability (SMD, 0.96, 95% CI, 0.03 to 1.89, p = 0.04), and the perception threshold of sweet taste (MD, 0.80, 95% CI, 0.79 to 0.81, p < 0.00001)., Conclusions: Due to variations in the methods, designs, and selection criteria employed in the included studies, it is necessary to establish a feasible framework. Future research using detailed and targeted approaches can provide clearer and more unified conclusions on the relationship between taste dysfunction and depression. Introduction: Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (ATR) is a well-known traditional Chinese medicine that is used for treating neuropathic diseases. However, there is little information about the safety of ATR. Methods: The present study evaluated the acute and subacute oral toxicity of a water extract of ATR in Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice. In acute trials, a single administration of extract at a dose 5,000 mg/kg body weight led to no clinical signs of toxicity or mortality, indicating that the lethal dose (LD50) exceeded 5,000 mg/kg. A subacute toxicity test was done using daily doses of 1,250, 2,500, and 5,000 mg/kg of the ATR extract for 28 days, which did not show any adverse clinical symptoms or mortality. However, the male renal organ index and urea level in mice given 5,000 mg/kg was obviously abnormal, which was consistent with pathological results and suggested that this dose might cause kidney injury. Results: Doses of ATR lower than 2,500 mg/kg could be regarded as safe, although the potential cumulative effects of long-term use of high doses of ATR need to be considered. A farmland area in Zhaotong City was taken as the research object， and the method of point-to-point collaborative sampling was used to collect farmland soil and vegetables in Zhaotong and test the content of six heavy metals， namely As， Pb， Cu， Zn， Cd， and Cr. The geo-accumulation index and potential ecological risk index were used to evaluate the heavy metal pollution of soil. The health risk model was used to evaluate the risk to the human body imposed by vegetables. The results showed that Cu， Zn， Pb， Cd， and Cr pollution existed in the research area. Compared with the risk screening value of farmland， the over-standard rates were 34.35%， 6.87%， 2.29%， 80.15%， and 6.11%， respectively； Pb， Cd， and Cr were found in vegetables. Compared with the pollutant limit in food， the over-standard rates were 6.87%， 15.27%， and 36.64%， respectively. According to the soil pollution evaluation， Cd in the soil showed a strong ecological risk， and other heavy metals in the soil showed a mild ecological risk. The human health risk evaluation model showed that both non-carcinogenic risk and carcinogenic risk were out of the acceptable range and had a greater influence on children. Correlation analysis showed that As in the soil had an antagonistic effect on Cu and Zn absorption by vegetables， whereas Cr in the soil could promote Cu and Zn absorption by vegetables.

Objective: Depression is a common mental illness. Neural stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (NSC-EVs) are involved in repairing neuronal injury. We estimated the mechanism of miR-16-5p in depression rats., Methods: EVs were extracted from NSCs. The depression rat model was established by corticosterone (CORT) induction and treated with NSC-EVs. The depression behavioral/pathological changes in rats were assessed using forced swimming test, open field test, sucrose consumption test and western blotting. The neuronal apoptosis in hippocampal tissue were detected. CORT-induced PC12 cell model was established. EV uptake by PC12 cells was measured and PC12 cell apoptosis was detected. The downstream targets of miR-16-5p were predicted and verified. The expressions of miR-16-5p and MYB in rats, PC12 cells, and EVs were measured. Functional rescue experiments were conducted to verify the role of miR-16-5p and MYB in PC12 cell apoptosis., Results: CORT induction increased neuronal apoptosis in hippocampal tissue and induced depression-like behaviors in rats, while NSC-EV treatment improved depression-like behaviors and apoptosis in rats. In PC12 cells, NSC-EVs decreased CORT-induced PC12 cell apoptosis. NSC-EVs carried miR-16-5p into PC12 cells. miR-16-5p knockdown in EVs partially reversed the inhibitory effects of NSC-EVs on CORT-induced PC12 cell apoptosis. miR-16-5p targeted to inhibit MYB to repress CORT-induced PC12 cell apoptosis. In vivo experiments further verified that NSC-EVs reduced neuronal injury in CORT-induced depression rats via the miR-16-5p/MYB axis., Conclusion: NSC-EVs-mediated alleviation on neuronal injury by carrying miR-16-5p to target MYB was highly likely one of the mechanisms by which NSC-EVs mediated miR-16-5p in neuroprotection of depression rats., (Copyright © 2023 IBRO. In recent years, PM 2.5 pollution has become a most important source of air pollution. Prolonged exposure to high PM 2.5 concentrations can give rise to severe health issues. Negative air ion (NAI) is an important indicator for measuring air quality, which is collectively known as the 'air vitamin'. However, the intricate and fluctuating meteorological conditions and vegetation types result in numerous uncertainties in the correlation between PM 2.5 and NAI. In this study, we collected data on NAI, PM 2.5 , and meteorological elements through positioning observation during the period of June to September in 2019 and 2020 under the condition of relatively constant leaf area in Quercus variabilis forest, a typical forest in warm temperate zones. We investigated the spatiotemporal variation of PM 2.5 and NAI under consistent meteorological conditions, established the correlation between PM 2.5 and NAI, and explicated the impact mechanism of PM 2.5 on NAI in natural conditions. The results showed that NAI decreased exponentially with the increases in natural PM 2.5 , with a significant negative correlation ( y =1148.79 x -0.123 ). The decrease rates of NAI in PM 2.5 concentrations of 0-20, 20-40, 40-80, 80-100 and 100-120 μg·m -3 were 40.1%, 36.2%, 9.4%, 2.4%, 5.1% and 6.8%, respectively. Results of the sensitivity analysis showed that the PM 2.5 concentration range of 0-40 μg·m -3 was the sensitive range that affected NAI. Our findings could provide a scientific basis for better understanding the response mechanisms of NAI to environmental factors.

Background: Insular low-grade gliomas (LGGs) are surgically challenging due to their proximity to critical structures like the corticospinal tract (CST)., Purpose: This study aims to determine if preoperative CST shape metrics correlate with postoperative motor complications in insular LGG patients., Study Type: Retrospective., Population: 42 patients (mean age 40.26 ± 10.21 years, 25 male) with insular LGGs., Field Strength/sequence: Imaging was performed using 3.0 Tesla MRI, incorporating T1-weighted magnetization-prepared rapid gradient-echo, T2-weighted space dark-fluid with spin echo (SE), and diffusional kurtosis imaging (DKI) with gradient echo sequences, all integrated with echo planar imaging., Assessment: Shape metrics of the CST, including span, irregularity, radius, and irregularity of end regions (RER and IER, respectively), were compared between the affected and healthy hemispheres. Total end region radius (TRER) was determined as the sum of RER 1 and RER 2. The relationships between shape metrics and postoperative short-term (4 weeks) and long-term (>8 weeks) motor disturbances assessing by British Medical Research Council grading system, was analyzed using multivariable regression models., Statistical Testing: Paired t-tests compared CST metrics between hemispheres. Logistic regression identified associations between these metrics and motor disturbances. The models were developed using all available data and there was no independent validation dataset. Significance was set at P < 0.05., Results: Short-term motor disturbance risk was significantly related to TRER (OR = 199.57). Long-term risk significantly correlated with IER 1 (OR = 59.84), confirmed as a significant marker with an AUC of 0.78. Single crystals of GaKCu(PO 4 ) 2 were synthesized using the hydrothermal method, and subsequent measurements of specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and high-field magnetization were performed. A broad peak is observed in the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat curves, with the maximum values appearing at about 11.5 K and 5.29 K, respectively. The highest maximum peak value of susceptibility is observed when the magnetic field is applied along the c -axis, followed by the a -axis, b- axis, and polycrystalline samples. These indicate that the system exhibits one-dimensional magnetism and the magnetic easy axis is the c axis. The magnetization at 2 K reveals the occurrence of a field-induced Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) phase within the magnetic field range of approximately 8-12 T. High-field magnetization up to 40 T indicates that the compound reaches magnetization saturation as the field exceeds H s = 12 T. Through systematic measurements, a field-temperature ( H - T ) phase diagram was constructed, and dome-like phase boundaries were observed. Reciprocal selection between symbiotic organisms and their hosts can generate variations in local adaptation between them. Symbionts often form species complexes with lineages partially adapted to various hosts. However, it is unclear how interactions among these lineages influences geographic variation in the extent of host-symbiont local adaptation. We addressed this shortcoming with experiments on burying beetles Nicrophorus vespilloides and their specialist phoretic mite Poecilochirus carabi in two adjacent woodlands. Burying beetles transport these mites to vertebrate carrion upon which they both reproduce. P. carabi appears to be a species complex, with distinct lineages that specialise on breeding alongside different Nicrophorus species. We found that in one wood (Gamlingay Woods), N. vespilloides carries a mixture of mite lineages, with each lineage corresponding to one of the four Nicrophorus species that inhabits this wood. However, two burying beetle species coexist in neighbouring Waresley Woods and here N. vespilloides predominantly carries the mite lineage that favours N. vespilloides . Mite lineage mixing alters the degree of local adaptation for both N. vespilloides and the P. carabi mites, affecting reproductive success variably across different woodlands. In Gamlingay, mite lineage mixing reduced N. vespilloides reproductive success, while experimentally purifying mites lineage enhanced it. The near pure lineage of vespilloides mites negligibly affected Waresley N. vespilloides . Mite reproductive success varied with host specificity: Gamlingay mites had greatest reproductive success on Gamlingay beetles, and performed less well with Waresley beetles. By contrast, Waresley mites had consistent reproductive success, regardless of beetle's woodland of origin. We conclude that there is some evidence that N. vespilloides and its specific mite lineage have coadapted. However, neither N. vespilloides nor its mite lineage adapted to breed alongside other mite lineages. This study aimed to explore the moderating role of socioeconomic status (SES) in the association between multimorbidity and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among cancer patients in Anhui China. A total of 560 cancer patients were recruited for the cross-section study. Socio-demographic and clinical characteristics were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Tobit regression analysis was employed to investigate the relationship between multimorbidity and HRQOL as well as to assess the moderating effect of SES. The research findings indicated that 76.61% of cancer patients experienced multimorbidity, with psychological multimorbidity being the most prevalent (45.54%), followed by physical-psychological multimorbidity (20.89%). Moreover, physical-psychological multimorbidity had the most substantial adverse effect on HRQOL ( P < .001). The presence of multimorbidity was correlated with a significant decline in HRQOL, with a 17.5% ( P < .001) decrease in HRQOL for each additional multimorbidity. Additionally, SES played a significant role in moderating the impact of multimorbidity on HRQOL in cancer patients. (Marginal effect = -0.022, P < .01). The high SES group exhibited a higher overall HRQOL than the low SES group (Marginal effect = 0.068, P < .001). And with the increase of multimorbidity, HRQOL in the higher SES showed a more pronounced downward trend, compared with the lower SES ( β = -.270 vs β = -.201, P < .001). Our findings underscore the importance of preventing and managing multimorbidity in cancer patients, particularly those with low SES. Furthermore, it is essential to consider the impact of the rapid decline in HRQOL as the number of multimorbidity increases in individuals with higher SES. Objectives: This study aims to explore the relationship between the methylation levels of the O-6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter and the structural connectivity in insular gliomas across hemispheres., Methods: We analyzed 32 left and 29 right insular glioma cases and 50 healthy controls, using differential tractography, correlational tractography, and graph theoretical analysis to investigate the correlation between structural connectivity and the methylation level., Results: The differential tractography results revealed that in left insular glioma, the volume of affected inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF, p = 0.019) significantly correlated with methylation levels. Correlational tractography results showed that the quantitative anisotropy (QA) value of peritumoral fiber tracts also exhibited a significant correlation with methylation levels (FDR < 0.05). On the other hand, in right insular glioma, anterior internal part of the reticular tract, IFOF, and thalamic radiation showed a significant correlation with methylation levels but at a different correlation direction from the left side (FDR < 0.05). The graph theoretical analysis showed that in the left insular gliomas, only the radius of graph was significantly lower in methylated MGMT group than unmethylated group (p = 0.047). No significant correlations between global properties and methylation levels were observed in insular gliomas on both sides., Conclusion: Our findings highlight a significant, hemisphere-specific correlation between MGMT promoter methylation and structural connectivity in insular gliomas. Gliomas are one of the most common primary malignant tumours of the central nervous system (CNS), of which glioblastomas (GBMs) are the most common and destructive type. The glioma tumour microenvironment (TME) has unique characteristics, such as hypoxia, the blood-brain barrier (BBB), reactive oxygen species (ROS) and tumour neovascularization. Therefore, the traditional treatment effect is limited. As cellular oxidative metabolites, ROS not only promote the occurrence and development of gliomas but also affect immune cells in the immune microenvironment. In contrast, either too high or too low ROS levels are detrimental to the survival of glioma cells, which indicates the threshold of ROS. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of the mechanisms of ROS production and scavenging, the threshold of ROS, and the role of ROS in the glioma TME can provide new methods and strategies for glioma treatment. Current methods to increase ROS include photodynamic therapy (PDT), sonodynamic therapy (SDT), and chemodynamic therapy (CDT), etc., and methods to eliminate ROS include the ingestion of antioxidants. Papillary renal cell carcinoma (PRCC) is a highly heterogeneous cancer, and PRCC patients with advanced/metastatic subgroup showed obviously shorter survival compared to other kinds of renal cell carcinomas. However, the molecular mechanism and prognostic predictors of PRCC remain unclear and are worth deep studying. The aim of this study is to identify novel molecular classification and construct a reliable prognostic model for PRCC. The expression data were retrieved from TCGA, GEO, GTEx and TARGET databases. CRISPR data was obtained from Depmap database. The key genes were selected by the intersection of CRISPR-Cas9 screening genes, differentially expressed genes, and genes with prognostic capacity in PRCC. The molecular classification was identified based on the key genes. Drug sensitivity, tumor microenvironment, somatic mutation, and survival were compared among the novel classification. A prognostic model utilizing multiple machine learning algorithms based on the key genes was developed and tested by independent external validation set. Our study identified three clusters (C1, C2 and C3) in PRCC based on 41 key genes. C2 had obviously higher expression of the key genes and lower survival than C1 and C3. Significant differences in drug sensitivity, tumor microenvironment, and mutation landscape have been observed among the three clusters. By utilizing 21 combinations of 9 machine learning algorithms, 9 out of 41 genes were chosen to construct a robust prognostic signature, which exhibited good prognostic ability. SERPINH1 was identified as a critical gene for its strong prognostic ability in PRCC by univariate and multiple Cox regression analyses. Quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot demonstrated that SERPINH1 mRNA and protein were highly expressed in PRCC cells compared with normal human renal cells. Objective: To explore the effects of comprehensive nursing intervention on in vitro fertilization (IVF) and pregnancy outcomes in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)., Method: A total of 130 patients with PCOS admitted to our hospital from April 2021 to March 2023 were selected as the research subjects. They were evenly divided according to a random number table method. The control group received routine care for the patients, while the study group received comprehensive care for the patients. The IVF, pregnancy outcomes, negative emotional changes, serum and follicular fluid (FF) amyloid-related protein and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels of the 2 groups of patients were compared., Result: The data on IVF rate and pregnancy rate in the study group were significantly better than those in the control group (P < .05). The SAS and SDS scores of the study group patients after intervention were significantly lower than those of the control group (P < .05). We investigated tree growth in Robinia pseudoacacia plantations at Ansai in Shaanxi Province and at Ji-xian in Shanxi Province by comparing the tree-ring width, basal area increase (BAI), δ 13 C value, intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE), and stomatal regulation. We quantified the responses of tree growth and iWUE to climatic factors at each site. The tree-ring width at Ansai and Jixian decreased with stand age, whereas the BAI at Ansai increased, and that at Jixian decreased after the BAI peaked. The δ 13 C value and iWUE of trees at Jixian were higher than those at Ansai. The iWUE of trees at both sites was similar to the constant intercellular CO 2 concentration/atmospheric CO 2 concentration ( C i / C a ) scenario, indicating that the C i of trees was elevated with increasing C a , while the stomata remained open. The BAI at Ansai was significantly positively correlated with highest temperature in May, relative humidity in June, precipitation in August, relative humidity in September, and standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) in September and October of current year, but negatively correlated with temperature in June. The BAI at Jixian was significantly positively correlated with SPEI in June and July, and lowest temperature in October of current year. The iWUE of trees at Ansai was significantly positively correlated with relative humidity and precipitation in June of the current year, but negatively correlated with minimum temperature in May, relative humidity in June, and temperature and maximum temperature in July of current year. A significant positive correlation between iWUE of trees at Jixian and lowest temperature in June of current year was detected. At the annual scale, the BAI of trees at Ansai was positively correlated with precipitation and SPEI, but no significant relationship was observed for trees at Jixian. However, the iWUE of trees at both sites was significantly affected by precipitation. Path analysis showed that SPEI and minimum temperature had a direct effect on BAI and iWUE of trees at Ansai, whereas precipitation and average temperature indirectly affected BAI and iWUE through SPEI. The highest temperature had a direct effect on tree growth at Jixian, whereas precipitation, minimum temperature, and average temperature had direct effects on iWUE. These results suggested that SPEI was the main climatic factor that affected the growth of R. pseudoacacia , while C i was an important physiological factor. Our results could provide reference for the protection and management of R. pseudoacacia plantations under climate change.

Hypothesis: Unlike noble metals, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) behavior on Ti is more complicated due to its spontaneously formed oxide film. This film results in sluggish ORR kinetics and tends to be reduced within ORR potential region, causing the weak and multi-reaction coupled current. Though Ti is being used in chemical and biological fields, its ORR research is still underexplored., Experiments: We innovatively employed the modified reactive tip generation-substrate collection (RTG/SC) mode of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) with high efficiency of 97.2 % to quantitatively study the effects of film characteristics, solution environment (pH, anion, dissolved oxygen), and applied potential on the ORR activity and selectivity of Ti. Then, density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) analyses were employed to elucidate its ORR behavior., Findings: On highly reduced Ti, film properties dominate ORR behavior with promoted 4e - selectivity. Rapid film regeneration in alkaline/O 2 -saturated conditions inhibits ORR activity. Besides, ORR is sensitive to anion species in neutral solutions while showing enhanced 4e - reduction in alkaline media. All the improved 4e - selectivities originate from the hydrogen bond/electrostatic stabilization effect, while the decayed ORR activity by Cl - arises from the suppressed O 2 adsorption. The purposes of this study were to describe the learning outcomes of students with disabilities in senior high school, to establish a model to explain the effects of personal, family, and school experience factors on the learning outcomes of students with disabilities, and to determine the relationship between post-school and in-school outcomes. There were 496 participants selected in the 2011 and 2012 academic year from the database of Special Needs Education Longitudinal Study. The survey data obtained from questionnaires for teachers, parents, and students were used to conduct secondary analysis. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages, a PLS structural equation model, and multiple regression were used in this study. The results of this study were as follows: (1) Students with disabilities had the best learning performances in school, and most parents were satisfied with their students' education in school; however, employment performance was the weakest upon leaving school. (2) School experience factors had the greatest influence on the school learning outcomes model, followed by student factors and family factors. (3) In-school outcomes effectively predicted postsecondary education, employment, social adaptation, and satisfaction after leaving school. In conclusion, the results of this study found that personal, family, and school factors have a significant impact on the learning outcomes of students with disabilities, and in-school outcomes can effectively predict postsecondary education, social adaptation, and satisfaction after leaving school.

To explore the groundwater recharge rate and soybean growth dynamics under different groundwater depths, we conducted a field experiment with four groundwater depth treatments (1 m, D 1 ; 2 m, D 2 ; 3 m, D 3 ; 4 m, D 4 ) through the groundwater simulation system in 2021 and 2022 and explored the relationships between groundwater depth and groundwater recharge, irrigation, growth dynamics of soybean plants, and yield. We used the Logistic regression model to simulate the dynamics of soybean growth indices, including plant height, leaf area index, and dry matter accumulation. The results showed that compared with D 1 treatment, the amount of groundwater recharge under D 2 , D 3 , and D 4 treatments decreased by 81.1%, 96.8%, 97.5% and 80.7%, 96.7%, 97.3% in the two years, respectively. The groundwater in D 1 treatment could meet water needs of soybean throughout the whole growth period, except that irrigation was needed in the sowing stage. The amount of irrigation under D 1 treatment was decreased by 91.7%, 93.0%, 94.2%, and 90.9%, 92.9%, 94.0% in the two years, respectively, compared with D 2 , D 3 , D 4 treatments. Among the four treatments, D 1 treatment took the shortest time for entering the rapid growth stage and reach the maximum growth rate, which had the highest maximum growth rate. At the mature stage of soybean, the dry matter distribution ratio of stem in D 1 treatment was the highest. D 1 treatment promoted the translocation of post-flowering assimilates in soybean, and its post-flowering assimilate contribution to seeds increased by 15.5%, 16.2%, 32.6% and 45.5%, 48.7%, 63.3% in the two years, respectively, compared with D 2 , D 3 , D 4 treatments. D 1 treatment had the highest plant height, leaf area index, and dry matter accumulation, follo-wed by D 4 treatment, while D 3 treatment had the lowest. Soybean yield, number of pods per plant, number of grains per plant, and 100-grain weight all decreased and then increased with increasing groundwater depth, following an order of D 1 >D 4 >D 2 >D 3 . Soybean yield was significantly positively correlated with groundwater recharge, which was positively correlated with plant height, leaf area index, and dry matter accumulation. Our results indicated that the D 1 treatment with adequate groundwater recharge increased plant height, leaf area index, and dry matter accumulation, coordinated the distribution and translocation of dry matter among all plant parts in the late soybean growth period, and ultimately achieved the highest yield. When groundwater depth was deep (D 4 ), groundwater recharge was small. In such case, the growth and development status and yield of soybean could also reach a high level if there was sufficient water supply.

One major concern related to climate change is that elevated temperatures will drive increases in parasite outbreaks. Increasing temperature is known to alter host traits and host-parasite interactions, but we know relatively little about how these are connected mechanistically-that is, about how warmer temperatures impact the relationship between epidemiologically relevant host traits and infection outcomes. Here, we used a zooplankton-fungus ( Daphnia dentifera-Metschnikowia bicuspidata ) disease system to experimentally investigate how temperature impacted physical barriers to infection and cellular immune responses. We found that Daphnia reared at warmer temperatures had more robust physical barriers to infection but decreased cellular immune responses during the initial infection process. Infected hosts at warmer temperatures also suffered greater reductions in fecundity and lifespan. Furthermore, the relationship between a key trait-gut epithelium thickness, a physical barrier-and the likelihood of terminal infection reversed at warmer temperatures. Together, our results highlight the complex ways that temperatures can modulate host-parasite interactions and show that different defense components can have qualitatively different responses to warmer temperatures, highlighting the importance of considering key host traits when predicting disease dynamics in a warmer world. Organisms are increasingly facing multiple stressors, which can simultaneously interact to cause unpredictable impacts compared with a single stressor alone. Recent evidence suggests that phenotypic plasticity can allow for rapid responses to altered environments, including biotic and abiotic stressors, both within a generation and across generations (transgenerational plasticity). Parents can potentially "prime" their offspring to better cope with similar stressors or, alternatively, might produce offspring that are less fit because of energetic constraints. At present, it remains unclear exactly how biotic and abiotic stressors jointly mediate the responses of transgenerational plasticity and whether this plasticity is adaptive. Here, we test the effects of biotic and abiotic environmental changes on within- and transgenerational plasticity using a Daphnia - Metschnikowia zooplankton-fungal parasite system. By exposing parents and their offspring consecutively to the single and combined effects of elevated temperature and parasite infection, we showed that transgenerational plasticity induced by temperature and parasite stress influenced host fecundity and lifespan; offsprings of mothers who were exposed to one of the stressors were better able to tolerate elevated temperature, compared with the offspring of mothers who were exposed to neither or both stressors. Yet, the negative effects caused by parasite infection were much stronger, and this greater reduction in host fitness was not mitigated by transgenerational plasticity. We also showed that elevated temperature led to a lower average immune response, and that the relationship between immune response and lifetime fecundity reversed under elevated temperature: the daughters of exposed mothers showed decreased fecundity with increased hemocyte production at ambient temperature but the opposite relationship at elevated temperature. Clinical observation indicates that exercise capacity, an important determinant of survival in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD), is most decreased in children with reduced pulmonary blood flow (RPF). However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, we obtained human RPF lung samples from children with tetralogy of Fallot as well as piglet and rat RPF lung samples from animals with pulmonary artery banding surgery. We observed impaired alveolarization and vascularization, the main characteristics of pulmonary dysplasia, in the lungs of RPF infants, piglets, and rats. RPF caused smaller lungs, cyanosis, and body weight loss in neonatal rats and reduced the number of alveolar type 2 cells. RNA sequencing demonstrated that RPF induced the downregulation of metabolism and migration, a key biological process of late alveolar development, and the upregulation of immune response, which was confirmed by flow cytometry and cytokine detection. In addition, the immunosuppressant cyclosporine A rescued pulmonary dysplasia and increased the expression of the Wnt signaling pathway, which is the driver of postnatal lung development. We concluded that RPF results in pulmonary dysplasia, which may account for the reduced exercise capacity of patients with CHD with RPF. The underlying mechanism is associated with immune response activation, and immunosuppressants have a therapeutic effect in CHD-associated pulmonary dysplasia.

Objective: Our study aimed to investigate the shape and diffusion properties of the corticospinal tract (CST) in patients with insular incidental and symptomatic low-grade gliomas (LGGs), especially those in the incidental group, and evaluate their association with post-surgical motor function., Methods: We performed automatic fiber tracking on 41 LGG patients, comparing macroscopic shape and microscopic diffusion properties of CST between ipsilateral and contralateral tracts in both incidental and symptomatic groups. A correlation analysis was conducted between properties of CST and post-operative motor strength grades., Results: In the incidental group, no significant differences in mean diffusion properties were found between bilateral CST. While decreased anisotropy of the CST around the superior limiting sulcus and increased axial diffusivity of the CST near the midbrain level were noted, there was no significant correlation between pre-operative diffusion metrics and post-operative motor strength. In comparison, we found significant correlations between the elongation of the affected CST in the preoperative scans and post-operative motor strength in short-term and long-term follow ups (p = 1.810 × 10 -4 and p = 9.560 × 10 -4 , respectively)., Conclusions: We found a significant correlation between CST shape measures and post-operative motor function outcomes in patients with incidental insular LGGs. TET2 (ten-eleven-translocation) protein is a Fe(II)- and α-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase that catalyzes DNA demethylation to regulate gene expression. While TET2 gene is frequently mutated in hematological cancer, its enzymatic activity is also compromised in various solid tumors. Whether TET2 deficiency creates vulnerability for cancer cells has not been studied. Here we reported that TET2 deficiency is associated with the change of lipid metabolism processes in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patient. We demonstrate that statins, the inhibitors of β-Hydroxy β-methylglutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase and commonly used cholesterol-lowering medicines, significantly sensitize TET2 deficient tumor cells to apoptosis. TET2 directly regulates the expression of HMG-CoA synthase (HMGCS1) by catalyzing demethylation on its promoter region, and conversely TET2 deficiency leads to significant down-regulation of HMGCS1 expression and the mevalonate pathway. Consistently, overexpression of HMGCS1 in TET2-deficient cells rescues statin-induced apoptosis. We further reveal that decrease of geranylgeranyl diphosphate (GGPP), an intermediate metabolite in the mevalonate pathway, is responsible for statin-induced apoptosis. GGPP shortage abolishes normal membrane localization and function of multiple small GTPases, leading to cell dysfunction. We have theoretically investigated the feasibility of constructing a spintronic field-effect transistor with the active channel made of a polymer chain with the antiferromagnetic coupling oriented in the source-to-drain direction. We found two different device function regimes controlling the on-chain spin-charge carrier density by tuning the gate voltage. At higher charge carrier densities, the source-drain current linearly increases with decreasing charge carrier densities. In this regime, no polymer spin-polarized current is observed. Upon reaching a critical gate voltage, the current decreases with decreasing charge densities. It is accompanied by the formation of spin-polarized current, generated by an on-chain process, which can be related to spin-charge spatial distribution symmetry breaking caused either by an application of the source-to-drain voltage (higher spin polarization near the drain), or the breakdown of the Peierls dimerization near chain ends. Numerical simulation of the transistor characteristics suggests that the design of a polymer spintronic field-effect transistor is in principle feasible.
