Abstract Ophiolites occur widely in orogenic belts, yet their origins remain controversial. Here we present a modern example with a geodynamic model from Timor, eastern Indonesia, where Earth’s youngest supra-subduction zone (SSZ)-type ophiolitic fragments are exposed. Zircon U-Pb ages and geochemical data indicate a short timespan (~10 to 8 Ma) for the magmatic sequence with boninitic and tholeiitic arc compositions. We interpret the Timor ophiolite as part of the infant Banda arc-forearc complex, which formed with the opening of the North Banda Sea and subsequent arc-continent collision along the irregular Australian continental margin. Our study connects the occurrence of small, short-lived ocean basins in the western Pacific with orogens around the globe where ephemeral SSZ-type ophiolites occur. These orogenic ophiolites do not represent preexisting oceanic crust, but result from upper-plate processes in early orogenesis and thus mark the onset of collision zone magmatism.

In the Shourestan area, 14 kilometers west of Sarbisheh city, in South Khorasan province, volcanic rocks with pyroxene-andesite composition belonging to Eocene-Oligocene are exposed. The constituent minerals of these rocks include plagioclase and pyroxene. The composition of plagioclases have range from Ab32, An68 to Ab58, An42 and are andesine-labradorite type. Clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene have diopside-like augite and enstatite composition, respectively. The crystallization temperature for clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene were about 1175 and 1200 °C respectively and the pressure (for both types) was 2 to 5 kb. The geochemical data of whole rocks show that the andesitic lavas of Shourestan have high potassium calc-alkaline nature and the amount of Mg# in them varies from 40.97 to 60.97, which indicates the role of mantle components in their formation. These rocks show signs of differentiation including LREE/HREE ((La/Yb)N) between 9.95 to 12.42, LREE/MREE ((La/Sm)N) between 3.53 to 6.55, MREE/HREE ((Sm/Yb)N) between 1.89 to 2.99. High ratios of Zr/Nb (9.81-22.10), Th/Nb (0.68-1.79), Th/Ta (7.29-24), and Nb/Ta (9.69-15.66) along with the pattern of LIL elements, support the possibility of different degrees of crustal contamination-assimilation of magma during its ascent to the earth's surface. The studied rocks have low ratios of Ce/Y (2.44-3.48), (Tb/Yb)N (1.17-1.39), Sm/Yb (1.92-2.78), and relatively flat MREE-HREE pattern that confirms the melting of the subcontinental lithospheric mantle in the field of spinel stability and at a depth of fewer than 75 kilometers. Introduction Calc-alkaline magmas are commonly active in convergent plate margins and their petrogenesis is crucial for understanding the origin and evolution of the andesitic continental crust. The generation of calc-alkaline magmatic series in oceanic subduction zones has been primarily attributed to the partial melting of enriched mantle sources with the involvement of fluids and/or melts from the subducted oceanic lithosphere or the partial melting of metasomatized sub-continental lithospheric mantle that had been modified by previous plate subduction (Cheng et al., 2020). Andesite is the second most common volcanic rock type on earth and provides abundant information about the interaction between the mantle and crust in the subduction zones. However, the petrogenesis of subduction-related andesite is being debated, since andesite can form via different processes, such as (1) magma mixing between felsic and mafic/ultramafic melt; (2) fractional melting or assimilation fractional crystallization from basaltic composition; (3) partial melting of the hydrated mantle wedge peridotite (Li et al., 2013). Experimental investigation demonstrates that plagioclase and clinopyroxene composition can be used to estimate the P-T condition of volcanic rock crystallization. The chemical composition of pyroxene in volcanic rocks shows the nature of the host lava and is used to determine the magmatic series, tectonic environment, and origin of the igneous rock (Putirka, 2008). In the Shourestan area, 14 kilometers west of Sarbisheh city in South Khorasan province, Eocene-Oligocene volcanic rocks with pyroxene-andesite composition are exposed. Based on the results of previous studies, the Tertiary lavas in the Sarbisheh area have calc-alkaline nature and are related to active continental margins (Mohammadi and Nakhaei, 2022). In this research, the chemical composition of minerals has been used to determine the nature of magma, tectonic setting and evaluation of the temperature and pressure conditions for the crystallization of andesitic lavas. Also, by using the geochemical data of the whole rock, the geochemical characteristics, tectonic setting, and origin of these rocks have been investigated. Materials and Methods Microprobe analysis of pyroxene and plagioclase minerals was done at the institute of Earth sciences in Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan. A scanning electron microscope (JEOL SEM JSM-6360LV) was used to observe micro-scale texture. Identification of mineral phases was done by an energy dispersive spectrometer equipped with SEM, under the beam conditions of 15 kV, and 0.2 nA for the acceleration voltage, and beam current, respectively. Mineralogical investigation was carried out by an electron probe micro analyzer (JEOL EPMA JXA-8900R) equipped with four wave-length dispersive spectrometers. For geochemical investigations, 8 samples were analyzed in Acme laboratory in Canada by ICP method (for major elements) and ICP-MS (for trace and rare earth elements) and 3 samples in ZarAzma Company (Tehran, Iran) by alkaline melting method (for major elements) and ICP-MS (for trace and rare earth elements). Discussion Petrographic studies show that the volcanic rocks of the Shourestan area have pyroxene-andesite composition. After plagioclase, pyroxene is the most abundant mineral in Shourestan andesitic lavas. The values of Mg# in clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene are 72-78 and 71-77, respectively. High values of Mg# in pyroxenes indicate the role of mantle components in the magma source. Based on the chemistry of clinopyroxene, andesitic lavas of the Shourestan area have sub-alkaline nature and are located in the field of volcanic arc basalts. The anorthite content of plagioclases in andesitic lavas of Shourestan (52-66%) and Mg# of clinopyroxenes (72-78) indicate the low amount of water during the formation of these minerals from primary magma. The formation temperature of investigated clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene was about 1200 °C and the calculated pressure at the time of their crystallization was determined 2 to 5 kb. The volcanic rocks of Shourestan were located in the range of andesite with high potassium calc-alkaline nature. The amount of Mg# in these rocks varies from 40.97 to 60.97, which indicates the role of mantle components in their formation. The presence of negative Ti, Nb, and P anomalies in trace element diagrams of the studied samples, confirms the formation of these rocks in subduction zones. Relatively low values of YbN in the samples (8.42 to 10.05 ppm) indicate low amounts of garnet in the source. Geochemical characteristics of the Shourestan andesitic rocks such as K2O/P2O5 ratio >2 along with high Al2O3 and Th enrichment can be related to crustal contamination or magma formation from a heterogeneous metasomatized mantle source. In addition, Th/Ta (7.29-24), Nb/Ta (9.69-15.66) and Ta/La (0.02-0.05) ratios also indicate different degrees of the crustal contamination-assimilation of magma during the ascent to the surface of the earth. Based on various element ratios, the Shourestan andesitic lavas originated from a subcontinental lithospheric mantle that evolved during subduction. The geochemical characteristics of the investigated rocks, such as the high ratio of LILE/HFSE and LREE/HREE, as well as the different tectonic discriminant diagrams, confirm active continental margin tectonic setting.

The Taiwan mountain belt is the result of an arc-continent collision following the total subduction of the South China Sea and subsequent closure of the Luzon forearc, a process important in the accretionary growth of continents. Due to the oblique convergence, the southern tip of Taiwan Island is experiencing incipient collision, which is key to observing the oceanic-continental subduction transition. Within the monotonous turbidite extensively exposed on the Hengchun Peninsula as an uplifted Manila Trench accretionary wedge, the Shihmen Conglomerate, as a few intercalated lenses of coarse mafic pebbles, represents a dramatic change in sediment provenance and the causal tectonic event. New zircon U-Pb and amphibole 40Ar/39Ar ages are obtained from sediments, including sands and mafic pebbles that are either gabbro or foliated amphibolite. The 22–24 Ma zircon crystallization ages confirm the South China Sea origin of the mafic clasts, while the much younger 13 ± 2 Ma amphibole 40Ar/39Ar isochron ages from foliated amphibolites suggest a later thermal-tectonic event other than seafloor metamorphism. The amphibole 40Ar/39Ar ages overlap with the biostratigraphic age (∼11–14 Ma), indicating that the mafic source rocks were exhumed and eroded in a high-relief topography immediately after metamorphism. Detrital zircon U-Pb ages from a sandy layer within the conglomerate are also mostly identical to those from the mafic pebbles. Since the paleocurrent of the Shihmen Conglomerate was similar to that of the neighboring turbidites, which were derived from major rivers draining the southeastern Chinese continent, the provenance of the mafic pebbles and sands was best explained as an isolated subaerial mountain on the Eurasian continental margin with a very limited temporal and spatial extent, as the detrital products are poorly distributed. The most likely cause of the ephemeral mountain was the obduction of the South China Sea onto the Eurasian continental margin when the latter first impinged on the Philippine Sea Plate at the Manila Trench, where the gabbroic oceanic crust was uplifted and exhumed, followed by dynamic metamorphism along the basal thrust.

Abstract The evolution of the Taiwan orogen, an active arc–continent collision zone between the North Luzon Arc (NLA) and the Eurasian continent, is recorded in arc volcanic and sedimentary rocks from the Taiyuan retro‐foredeep basin of the Coastal Range, eastern Taiwan. In Tighanab area at southeast of Sarbisheh, the intrusion of quartzdioritic subvolcanic bodies into the Paleocene- Eocene limestone and sandstone led to the skarn formation. Plagioclase, hornblende (magnesiohornblende) and quartz are the main minerals in the subvolcanic rocks. Base on microprobe analyses, the composition of plagioclases with 15-45% anorthite content varies from andesine to oligoclase. The pressure during mineral crystallization of the Tighanab quartzdiorite porphyry is about 5.27kbar and its average temperature, on the basis of thermometry with coexisting hornblende and plagioclase, was obtained about788ºC. The Tighanab exo- skarn are characterized by the presence of garnet, epidote, pyroxene (diopside), calcite, chlorite, quartz, magnetite, pyrite, hematite and gypsum. The studied garnets belong to the calcic category and are of the andradite- grossular solid solution type. The composition of andradite varies slightly whereas the grossular constituents, to some extent, are uniform. The occurrence of andradite as well as its compositional changes represents high oxygen fugacity and Fe3+/Al ratio changes respectively, during the garnet crystallization. The presence of andradite, diopside- rich pyroxene and the over abundance of garnet relative to pyroxene in the studied skarn indicates oxidant conditions and correspond with the results of amphibole chemistry study in generating skarn quartz diorite porphyry. The lack of wollastonite in exo- skarn can be indication of garnet clinopyroxene crystallization at temperatures below 550 °C by metasomatizing solutions.

Ophiolite-bearing belts mark convergent plate suture zones and are central in reconstructing plate configuration and structures of mountain belts. The active Taiwan mountain belt, product of ongoing convergence between the Eurasian and Philippine Sea plates, has dismembered ophiolitic rocks exposed on both sides of the Longitudinal Valley suture: blueschist blocks in schistose Yuli Belt to the west, and the Eastern Taiwan Ophiolite (ETO) in the unmetamorphosed Lichi Mélange to the east. How these ophiolitic materials correlate with the consumed South China Sea and Luzon forearc oceanic lithospheres between the colliding Chinese continental margin and the Luzon Arc remained speculative. We present zircon U-Pb age results from both ophiolitic rocks in the Yuli Belt and the ETO to pinpoint the formation ages of respective oceanic crusts, and 40Ar/39Ar dates to unravel the tectonothermal history. The zircon U-Pb ages of ~15 Ma for all analyzed samples indicate a common South China Sea origin for ophiolitic materials across the plate suture, since oceanic crust of the Philippine Sea Plate near Taiwan is either Eocene or older. The 40Ar/39Ar ages of Yuli meta-ophiolitic rocks might suggest blueschist metamorphic overprint at ~9 Ma. The 40Ar/39Ar results are generally identical to zircon U-Pb ages for the ETO rocks, concurrent to their olistostromal origin in the forearc basin after being tectonically transported from the trench interface to the eastern retrowedge within the Hengchun accretionary prism. A working tectonic model for the Taiwan arc-continent collision is put forward with emphasis on the fate of the South China Sea during the mountain building processes.

The Paleoproterozoic basement of the northeastern part of the Leo-Man craton is intruded by generally NW-trending dikes. These regional scale dikes extend over 1000 km in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. We present chemical and Sr-Nd isotope compositions, as well as 40Ar/39Ar ages of these dikes with the following strikes N98°–N112°, and N114°–N124° in NE Burkina Faso. Field relationships show that the dikes are posterior to all other rock types dated between 2.26 Ga and 2.0 Ga. Chemical data indicate that the dikes are continental flood basalts and composed of low-Ti (TiO2 ≤ 2 wt.%) sub-alkaline basalts and andesites. They exhibit a minor negative Europium anomaly (0.86–0.99) and slightly fractionated REE patterns ((La/Yb)N = 2.5–9.1; YbN = 9.5–19.9). The ratios of Th/Ta (1.3–11.4) and Ce/Pb (5.2–58.5) suggest a varying crustal assimilation of the dike magmas during ascent in the continental crust for all studied samples. Calculated P-T conditions indicate that the magma reached temperatures of 1285 °C (calculated from olivine compositions) and pressures of 6.9 kbar (calculated for pyroxene minerals). Calculated initial 87Sr/86Sr (0.70040–0.70260) and ɛNd(t) = +2.1 to −3.5 at 1575 Ma, also point to a crustal contamination with the most primitive samples showing TDM values of 1946 Ma and 2154 Ma. The origin and geodynamic setting of the Maden Complex, which is situated in the Bitlis-Zagros Suture Zone in the Southeast Anatolian Orogenic Belt, is still controversial due to lack of systematic geological and geochemical data. Here we present new whole rock major-trace-rare earth element and Sr–Nd isotope data from the Middle Eocene volcanic rocks exposed in Maden Complex and discuss their origin in the light of new and old data. The volcanic lithologies are represented mainly by basalt and andesite, and minor dacite that vary from low-K tholeiitic, calc-alkaline, high-K calc-alkaline, and shoshonitic in composition. They exhibit enrichments in large ion lithophile and light rare earth elements, with depletions in high field strength elements. Basaltic rocks have uniform Sr and Nd isotope ratios with high εNd(t) values varying from +5.5 to +6.7, in contrast to, andesitic rocks are characterized by low εNd(t) values ranging from −1.6 to −10. These geochemical and isotopic characteristics indicate that two end-members, a subduction-related mantle source and a continental crust, were involved in the magma genesis. Considering all geological and geochemical data, we suggest that the Eocene Maden magmatism occurred as a post-collisional product by asthenospheric upwelling owing to convective removal of the lithosphere during an extensional collapse of the Southeast Anatolian ranges. The complete volcanic sequences restored in the Coastal Range of Taiwan are key archives for better understanding the magmatic and tectonic evolution of the Northern Luzon Arc. This paper reports (1) new zircon U-Pb ages and Hf isotopic data of fourteen volcanic samples from different sequences of four major volcanoes in the Coastal Range, (2) Hf isotopic data of dated magmatic and detrital zircons from two offshore volcanic islands, Lutao and Lanyu. These data indicate that the arc magmatism in the Coastal Range started at ~15 Ma, most active at ~9 Ma, and ceased at ~4.2 Ma. Magmatic zircons from the arc rocks show a significant variation in Hf isotopic composition, with εHf(T) values varying from +24.9 to +4.8. As pointed out by our previous studies, old continental zircons that show Cathaysian-type ages and Hf isotope features are common in samples from the Yuemei, Chimei, and Lanyu volcanoes, supporting the notion for the influence of the existence of an accreted micro-continent or continental fragment plays a role in the petrogenesis. Such inherited zircons are not observed in the Chengkuang’ao and Tuluanshan volcanoes and uncommon in Lutao, implying the discontinuity or a limited extent of the accreted continental fragment. The εHf(T) values are high and positive from ~15 - 8 Ma (+25 to +15; ±5ε-unit variation), and became lower from ~6 to 4.2 Ma (+20 to +8; ±6ε units) and the lowest from ~1.3 Ma (+19 to +5; ±7ε units). Such a temporal variation in zircon Hf isotopic ratios can be also identified in whole-rock Hf and Nd isotopic compositions, which decrease from ~6 Ma when the Northern Luzon Arc may have started colliding with the Eurasian continental margin.

The northern South China Sea (SCS) continental margin was proposed to be an active margin during the Mesozoic. However, only a few papers discussed the Mesozoic structural evolution in this region. Here, we provide information based on the seismic profile interpretations with age control from biostratigraphic studies and detrital zircon U-Pb dates of well MZ-1-1 in the western Dongsha-Penghu Uplift of the northern SCS continental margin. The industrial seismic profiles reveal evidence for structural inversion as represented by folds and high-angle reverse faults, formed by reactivation of pre-existing normal faults. The inversion event likely started after the Early Cretaceous, and developed in Late Cretaceous, but ceased before the Cenozoic. The areal extent of the structural inversion was restricted in the western Dongsha-Penghu Uplift and was approximately 100 km in width. Based on the paleogeographic reconstruction of SCS, the structural inversion was likely formed by a collision between the seamount (volcanic islands) swarm of the current North Palawan block (mainly the Calamian Islands) and the northern SCS continental margin around Late Cretaceous.

The role of the low velocity-high conductivity zones (LV–HCZs) in developing the Tibetan Plateau has remained controversial. Here, Wang et al.present new geochemical and petrological data that show the LV–HCZs are sources of partial melt thus giving insight into the development of the Tibetan Plateau.

A sequence of gabbros showing isotropic, layered and fine-grained textures is exposed in the Nalaqing mine at the southern tip of the ∼260 Ma Panzhihua intrusion, SW China. The field relations, structure, texture and mineralogy of the rocks indicate that the sequence represents the transition between the Lower zone and Middle zone of the intrusion. Isotropic gabbros characteristic of the Lower zone pass upward to layered gabbros of the Middle zone through a ∼5 m-thick microgabbro sheet, within and close to which small-scaled, concordant Fe-Ti oxide ore horizons are identified. Strong fractionation between HFSE and REE in a subset of samples is ascribed to cumulus titanomagnetite into which HFSE are preferentially incorporated over REE, as reflected in the parallel relations between Nb/La, Hf/Sm and Ti/Ti*. Both the isotropic and layered gabbros display cumulate textures and have similar mineral compositions (Mg# of clinopyroxene = ∼76–79 and An59–61), isotopic compositions [(87Sr/86Sr)i = 0.7044–0.7045 and εNd(t) = +2.4 to +3.9] and trapped liquid contents inferred from Zr abundance (∼17–34 ppm). However, there are substantial variations in elemental abundances (V, Cr and PGE) and ratios (Ti/V, La/Yb, Ba/Y and Cu/Pd) between the two types of gabbros, features that cannot be explained by cumulate formation from a common magma in a closed system. The microgabbros generally resemble high-Ti Emeishan basalts in major element compositions, but their low trace element abundances indicate some lost of residual liquid is inevitable despite rapid nucleation and cooling. Combined with available data and observations, we propose a model involving in-situ crystallization, followed by magma recharge and closed-system fractionation to explain the formation of texturally distinctive gabbros at Nalaqing and the evolution of the lower part of the Panzhihua intrusion.

The key to defining the termination of accretion in an accretionary orogen is to recognize the initial magmatic processes that are generated at the time of ocean closure. We present new age, geochemical and isotopic data for magmatic rocks related to terminal collision along the Solonker-Xar Moron suture zone in the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) that record such processes following closure of the PaleoAsian Ocean (Figure).

continental crust but the spatial and temporal distribution of crust generation within individual orogens remains poorly constrained. Paleozoic (~540–270 Ma) granitic rocks from the Alati, Junggar and Chinese Tianshan segments of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) have markedly bimodal age frequency distributions with peaks of ages at ~400 Ma and 280 Ma for the Altai segment, and ~430 Ma and 300 Ma for the Junggar and Chinese Tianshan segments. Most of the magma was generated in short time intervals (~20–40 Ma), and variations in magma volumes and in Nd–Hf isotope ratios are taken to reflect variable rates of new crust generation within a long-lived convergent plate setting.

The eastern Pontides orogenic belt provides a window into continental arc magmatism in the Alpine–Himalayan belt. The late Mesozoic–Cenozoic geodynamic evolution of this belt remains controversial. Here we focus on the nature of the transition from the adakitic to non-adakitic magmatism in the Kale area of Gumushane region in NE Turkey where this transition is best preserved. The adakitic lithologies comprise porphyries and hyaloclastites. The porphyries are represented by biotite-rich andesites, hornblende-rich andesite and dacite. The hayaloclastites represent the final stage of adakitic activity and they were generated by eruption/intrusion of adakitic andesitic magma into soft carbonate mud. The non-adakitic lithologies include basaltic-andesitic volcanic and associated pyroclastic rocks. Both rock groups are cutting by basaltic dikes representing the final stage of the Cenozoic magmatism in the study area. We report zircon U-Pb ages of 48.71 ± 0.74 Ma for the adakitic rocks, and 44.68 ± 0.84 Ma for the non-adakitic type, suggesting that there is no significant time gap during the transition from adakitic to non-adakitic magmatism. We evaluate the origin, magma processes and tectonic setting of the magmatism in the southern part of the eastern Pontides orogenic belt. Our results have important bearing on the late Mesozoic–Cenozoic geodynamic evolution of the eastern Mediterranean region.

Bibi Maryam granitoid body with about 5 Km2 has intruded into ophiolite mélange complex in sistan suture zone, in east of Iran. Thermal effects of this body on the host rocks show that this activity occurred after emplacement of ophiolite mélange. This intrusive body with general northwest – southeast trend is mainly tonalite-quartz diorite but there is a minor unit as dykes of granodiorite in the northwest side. Main texture in tonalite - quartz diorite is granular and in granodiorite part, granular, myrmekitic and graphic are popular. Quartz, plagioclase (oligoclase-andesin) and biotite are the main minerals and the minors are amphibol, apatite, zircon and opaque in the main body. Quartz, sodium plagioclase and alkali feldspar are the main minerals and the minors are garnet, apatite and opaque minerals in granodiorite unit. Bibi Maryam granitoid is magmatic arc type and has plotted in calc-alkaline, metaluminous to peraluminous field. High ratio of LREE / HREE, Sr/Y (average is 38.7), and SiO2 amount (average is 69.48) with absent of Eu negative anomaly show these rocks are very similar to high SiO2 adakites. High ratio of Sr/Y can be interpreted of high depth melting in plagioclase unstability and garnet stability field. The source of this magma can be an eclogite or garnet amphibolites which derived of subducted metamorphosed oceanic plate in east of Iran. Dating on zircon grains in the main body (tonalite-quartzdiorite) with zircon uranium – lead shows this magmatic event has occurred at 71.5 ± 0.6 Ma (maestrichtian). Based on this dating, the emplacement of host ophiolite mélange should occurred before maestrichtian.

This paper reports for the first time zircon U-Pb ages of volcanic rocks and sands from Lutao and Lanyu, two islets off SE Taiwan in the north Luzon arc. The samples include (1) seven andesites from four volcanic units and three river/beach sands from Lutao and (2) five basaltic andesites from four volcanic units and two river/beach sands from Lanyu. The Lutao andesites contain abundant magmatic zircons, aging from ~1.54 to ~1.24 Ma for individual sample, which yielded an overall mean 206Pb/238U age of 1.31 ± 0.03 Ma (n = 190, MSWD = 2.6). This is slightly older than, or broadly coincident with, a mean 206Pb/238U age of 1.23 ± 0.03 Ma (n = 103, MSWD = 1.9) given by detrital zircons from the three sands. The Lanyu volcanics appear to have less abundant magmatic zircons, aging from ~2.72 to ~2.35 Ma for individual sample, which yielded an overall mean 206Pb/238U age of 2.61 ± 0.13 Ma (n = 11, MSWD = 1.8). This accords with a mean 206Pb/238U age of 2.69 ± 0.11 Ma (n = 34, MSWD = 4.7) obtained by detrital zircons from the two sands. The age data suggest that in Lutao and Lanyu the major volcanic eruptions occurred at ~1.3 and ~2.6 Ma, respectively. Moreover, volcanic samples from both islets contain various amounts of older inherited zircons, ~11% in Lutao and up to ~82% in Lanyu, which together with detrital zircons from the sands show main age peaks at ~150 Ma and ~1.9 and ~2.5 Ga, consistent with the notion for a "hidden" continental crust involved in the genesis of the northern Luzon magmatic arc.

This study reports age and geochemical analyses of basaltic rocks dredged from volcanic seamounts offshore SW Taiwan. 40Ar/39Ar dating results of these rocks show them to be of the early Miocene age of ~22 - 21 Ma. They are evolved alkali basalts that show OIB-type geochemical features similar to post-spreading seamount basalts (14 - 3.5 Ma) in the South China Sea (SCS) and Miocene intraplate basalts on the Penghu Islands (16 - 8 Ma) and NW Taiwan (23 - 9 Ma). Their Sr-Nd-Pb isotope data plot within the range of the SCS seamount basalts that show an EM2-like component in the mantle source. The age and overall geochemical characteristics of the dredged basalts are comparable to those of the Kungkuan basalts, NW Taiwan and Baolai basalts, SW Taiwan, suggesting an extensive alkali basaltic volcanism along the southeastern Eurasian continental margin during the early Miocene that resulted from regional lithospheric extension in association with seafloor spreading in the South China Sea.

Situated in the heart of the Indonesian archipelago, Sulawesi records well-developed Cenozoic magmatism, yet its Cretaceous magmatic evolution remains enigmatic. Here, we report new U-Pb-Hf isotopic data of detrital zircons from West Sulawesi, Indonesia to constrain its Cretaceous to Eocene magmatic tempo. Detrital zircons aged at ca. 105-80 Ma and ca. 70-45 Ma occur as the most dominant age populations and show high positive εHf(t) values, indicating derivation from juvenile sources with limited continental crustal contamination. Our new data, combined with available results, support the existence of an Andean-type continental margin in West Sulawesi during mid-Cretaceous to early Eocene times. Importantly, the magmatic tempo of West Sulawesi is also consistent with those of southern Lhasa (Tibet) and Sumatra (Indonesia), but contrasts with those of Paleo-Pacific subduction-related arcs in SE China, SE Vietnam, East Malaysia, and NW Borneo. Therefore, we put forward that West Sulawesi may be the southeasternmost component of the Neo-Tethyan arc system that spreads over 7500 km, from southern Tibet to SE Sundaland. Such a huge arc system with concurrent magmatic flare-ups and lulls in South Asia may have played a significant role in global-scale plate reorganization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The termination of the Paleo-Asian Ocean, including duration and architecture, is controversial and has led to different reconstructions of the Central Asian orogenic belt. Deep-marine turbidites are of great significance in constraining the evolution of the oceanic basin. The youngest marine turbidites in the Beishan orogen in the central part of the southern Central Asian orogenic belt are separated by the Liuyuan mélange into two sections, the South turbidites and North turbidites. Detrital zircon grains from South turbidites yielded a maximum depositional age of 255 Ma. Those from North turbidites yielded a maximum depositional age of 254 Ma. Most of the Precambrian zircons of South turbidites have concentrated εHf(t) values (-6 to -2.6), whereas those of North turbidites range from -12.6 to +10.4, indicating different provenances. The North turbidites also have more positive whole-rock εNd(t) values (-0.5 to +1.1) than the South turbidites (-4.2 to -2.4), suggesting more juvenile or less evolved crustal components in the source. Detailed comparison of the detrital zircon ages and Hf-Nd isotopic characteristics with igneous and metamorphic rocks in the south Beishan area distinguishes two sources. These findings constrain the Liuyuan suture as the latest suture in the Beishan region, occurring no earlier than 254 Ma. The youngest peak age of detrital zircons of the youngest marine sedimentary rocks in the southern Central Asian orogenic belt becomes younger eastward from 288 Ma to 247 Ma, characterizing the closure duration of the Paleo-Asian Ocean from west to east in ~40 m.y. This study finds that the youngest turbidites in the Beishan orogen not only record sedimentary processes in response to the final episode of orogenic evolution in the southern Central Asian orogenic belt, but they also constrain how and when an archipelago-type accretionary orogen terminated.
