Honeybee venom has recently been considered an anti-neurodegenerative agent, primarily due to its anti-inflammatory effects. The natural accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) in the brain is reported to be the natural cause of aging neural ability downfall, and oxidative stress is the main route by which Aβ ignites its neural toxicity. Anti-neural oxidative stress is considered an effective approach for neurodegenerative therapy. To date, it is unclear how bee venom ameliorates neuronal cells in oxidative stress induced by Aβ. Here, we evaluated the neuroprotective effect of bee venom on Aβ-induced neural oxidative stress in both HT22 cells and an animal model. Our results indicate that bee venom protected HT22 cells against apoptosis induced by Aβ1–42. This protective effect was explained by the increased nuclear translocation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-like 2 (Nrf2), consequently upregulating the production of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), a critical cellular instinct antioxidant enzyme that neutralizes excessive oxidative stress. Furthermore, bee venom treatment activated the tropomyosin-related kinase receptor B (TrkB)/cAMP response element-binding (CREB)/brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is closely related to the promotion of cellular antioxidant defense and neuronal functions. A mouse model with cognitive deficits induced by Aβ1–42 intracerebroventricular (ICV) injections was also used. Bee venom enhanced animal cognitive ability and enhanced neural cell genesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus region in a dose-dependent manner. Further analysis of animal brain tissue and serum confirmed that bee venom reduced oxidative stress, cholinergic system activity, and intercellular neurotrophic factor regulation, which were all adversely affected by Aβ1–42. Our study demonstrates that bee venom exerts antioxidant and neuroprotective actions against neural oxidative stress caused by Aβ1–42, thereby promoting its use as a therapeutic agent for neurodegenerative disorders.

The adsorption and energetic heterogeneity properties of cesium ion on ion exchange resin were investigated. The adsorption equilibrium isotherm of cesium ion on ion exchange resin could be represented by the Lamgmuir equation. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that adsorption of cesium ion on ion exchange resin was spontaneous and endothermic. Adsorption heterogeneity for the adsorption system of cesium ions on Amberlite IR 120 increased with increasing temperature and decreasing pH. A model based on linear driving force approximation was used for simulating the adsorption behavior of cesium ions in a fixed bed adsorber.

There have been various techniques to detect and control document leakage; however, most techniques concentrate on document leakage by outsiders. There are rare techniques to detect and monitor document leakage by insiders. In this study, we observe user`s document reading behavior to detect and control document leakage by insiders. We make each user`s document reading patterns from attributes gathered by a logger program running on Microsoft Word, and then we apply the proposed system to help determine whether a current user who is reading a document matches the true user. We expect that our system based on document reading behavior can effectively prevent document leakage.

The photocatalytic degradation of Salmonella choleraesuis subsp. and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in water by TiO2 catalysts was investigated in a batch reactor. After 30 min of irradiation with UV light in the presence of 1 mg/ml of TiO2, death ratio of S. choleraesuis subsp. and V. parahaemolyticus was 60% and 83%, respectively. And complete killing of the cells was achieved after 3 h of illumination in the presence of TiO2. We established the response surface methodology to investigate the effect of principal parameters on the pathogenic bacteria sterilization such as TiO2 concentration, pH and temperature. By applying response surface analysis to the bactericidal effect of S. almonella choleraesuis subsp. and V. parahaemolyticus, we found that the cell death ratio was influenced significantly by the first order term of TiO2 concentration.

The adsorption equilibrium and kinetics of single and binary component copper ions and phenol onto powdered activated carbon (PAC), alginate beads and alginate-activated carbon beads (AAC) were studied. Adsorption equilibrium data for single component copper ions and phenol onto the adsorbents could be represented by the Langmuir equation. Multicomponent equilibrium data were correlated by the extended Langmuir and ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST). The IAST gave the best fit to our data. The amount of copper ions adsorbed onto the AAC beads in the binary component was greater than that of phenol. The internal diffusion coefficients were determined by comparing the experimental concentration curves with those predicted from surface diffusion and pore diffusion model.

Among them the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) gave the best fit to our data. And the adsorption amount of Cu2+ onto AAC bead was greater than that of phenol in the binary components.

V. parahaemolyticus is an important pathogen of humans and aquacultured animals. We established the response surface methodology (Box-Behnken Design) to investigate the effect of principal parameters on the cell sterilization such as TiO2 concentration, UV illumination time, temperature, and pH. The sterilization rate reached maximum value at the TiO2 concentration of 1.0 mg/ml. During irradiation under the time of 30 min with UV light with the 1g-TiO2/l, the sterilization rate was greater than 85%, and 99% or more cell lost their viability with 3 hours of irradiation. Sterilization rate of the cell increased with decrease in the pH and temperature.

A sulfonated styrene-(ethylene-butylene)-sulfonated styrene (SEBSS) is a highly sulfonated random block polymer. This material has several characteristics including high proton conductivity, good mechanical properties, and relatively low cost, but the chemical and temperature stability is lower than that of perfluorinated polymers such as Nafion® due to lower C–H bond association enthalpies of the hydrocarbon framework in polymer. In this paper, we developed the chemical and temperature stability of sulfonated styrene polymer membrane by impregnating silica in these polymers in order to overcome the humidification constraints in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). We modified a composite membrane by including a small amount of silica with the aim of retaining the electrochemically produced water inside the cell. A composite sulfonated SEBSS membrane was synthesized by the blending of inorganic materials such as tetraethylorthosilicate. Membrane cast from this material was investigated in relation to methanol permeability in the range of methanol concentration from 2 to 4 M at 30°C. SEM Photograph revealed a brittle, surface-attached silica layer with silicon oxide contents. The thermal decomposition of a composite membrane was investigated by TG-DSC thermograms. The I–V characteristics of DMFC using a composite membrane as electrolyte was studied with a single cell test equipment at the temperature of 30–90°C. The highest current densities are 74, 229, and 442 mA / cm 2 at temperatures 30, 60, and 90°C at a potential of 0.3 V , when small amounts of silica of 0.014 mol was added to SEBSS polymer.

The adsorption characteristics of 2,4-dinitrophenol from water onto a granular activated carbon, F-400, were studied at pH 4.3, 7 and 10. Adsorption equilibria of 2,4-dinitrophenol on GAC could be represented by Sips equation. Equilibrium capacity increased with decreasing pH. The differences in the rates of adsorption are primarily attributable to the differences in the equilibrium at the various pHs. Intraparticle diffusion was explained by surface diffusion mechanism. An adsorption model based on the linear driving force approximation (LDFA) was used for simulating the adsorption behavior of 2,4-dinitrophenol in a fixed bed adsorber.

Online signature verification is used widely for user authentication in many applications. In existing systems, one confidential level is usually used as the threshold for signature verifications. This causes high false rejection ratio (FRR) to systems in which signature verification is less important, and on the other hand, high false acceptance ratio (FAR) to systems in which signature verification is more critical. Thus, applying multi-confidential levels to the signature verification is crucial to solve this problem. Also, data mining techniques can be used to appropriately define multi-confidential levels. This paper proposes a hybrid online signature verification system supporting multi-confidential levels defined by data mining techniques.
