Abstract Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a Mediterranean herb renowned for its liver-protective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties, primarily attributed to the bioactive compound silymarin. Recent studies have also highlighted its potential efficacy against COVID-19, contributing to the growing demand for milk thistle dietary supplements, particularly for liver health and immunity support. Milk thistle seeds, rich in silymarin and unsaturated fatty acids, hold significant industrial value as both medicinal and oilseed crops. To meet the growing demand, it is essential to develop standardized seeds, cultivation practices, and extraction methods aimed at maximizing yields of silymarin and other valuable metabolites. Recent advancements in genetic and genomic research, including the development of the first reference genome of S. marianum, have played a pivotal role in elucidating the biosynthesis pathways of silymarin and optimizing phytochemical production. This review highlights recent advancements in the genetics, genomics, and biochemistry of milk thistle, with particular emphasis on the importance of diverse genetic resources and AI-driven phenomics strategies, such as hyperspectral and RGB imaging, for high-yield and chemotype breeding. Further, feasibility of developing elite cultivars through molecular approaches, such as genome editing and metabolic engineering, is also discussed as the new traits obtained this way would be key to enhancing the commercial value of milk thistle in light of mass production of phytochemicals to meet rising market demands.

Abstract Core LC42, retrieved from the Central Basin of the northwestern Ross Sea, contains three distinct sediment facies (IRD (ice-rafted debris)-poor bioturbated sandy mud, IRD-rich massive sandy mud, and laminated mud) that are interleaved with each other and deposited over the last 1 Ma. The biogenic components (biogenic opal, total organic carbon, and total nitrogen) of the laminated mud layers are consistently higher than the other two facies throughout the core. Based on the depositional succession of sediment facies and IRD-related depositional processes in the Antarctic continental margin, the laminated mud layers without IRD have been deposited during the glacial periods, but the enhanced paleoproductivity in terms of biogenic components during the mud deposition is unexpected. Backscattered electron imagery substantiates distinctly different componentry of the alternating light and dark laminae in the laminated mud. In particular, the light laminae contain scattered diatom fragments and eroded sand-sized lumps of fossil-bearing mud, whereas the dark laminae are clayey and diatomaceous. Both laminae thus are characterized by the high biogenic components, but they are interpreted to have been principally recycled from older deposits because diatom fragments are mostly reworked and old and their archives are poorly preserved. During the glacial periods, these laminated muds were deposited downward by milky plumes of meltwater discharged underneath the advancing glaciers that scoured the earlier-deposited and semi-consolidated diatom-rich sediments. Our study thus highlights that the recycling of biogenic particles should be precautious to avoid the fallacy of paleoclimatic interpretation in formulating climate-productivity models in the Antarctic continental margin.

Abstract Display has been evolving its role as a conventional optical output device into an user interactive input and output device by harnessing various sensors and taking full advantage of its user interaction friendly nature. To demonstrate this phenomenon, here we report a full organic photodiode embedded organic light-emitting diode display as multiple objects sensing platform which identifies the user’s physiological data based on the obtained photoplethysmography signal and also detects a fingerprint for an authentication concurrently in a single device. This paper introduces the technical breakthroughs to solve the complex technical challenges due to the crosstalks induced within the shared common layers during the full integration of the two conflicting devices and also the method made possible for the multiple objects sensing with the measurement results. Consequently, we believe it could prove a progression of display to a fully bidirectional innovative smart user interactive device and also could take a role as a sophisticated future display beyond organic light-emitting diode display.

Abstract The efficacy of flow diverters is influenced by the strut configuration changes resulting from size discrepancies between the stent and the parent artery. This study aimed to quantitatively analyze the impact of size discrepancies between flow diverters and parent arteries on the flow diversion effects, using computational fluid dynamics. Four silicone models with varying parent artery sizes were developed. Real flow diverters were deployed in these models to assess stent configurations at the aneurysm neck. Virtual stents were generated based on these configurations for computational fluid dynamics analysis. The changes in the reduction rate of the hemodynamic parameters were quantified to evaluate the flow diversion effect. Implanting 4.0 mm flow diverters in aneurysm models with parent artery diameters of 3.0–4.5 mm, in 0.5 mm increments, revealed that a shift from oversized to undersized flow diverters led to an increase in the reduction rates of hemodynamic parameter, accompanied by enhanced metal coverage rate and pore density. However, the flow diversion effect observed transitioning from oversizing to matching was less pronounced when moving from matching to undersizing. This emphasizes the importance of proper sizing of flow diverters, considering the benefits of undersizing and not to exceed the threshold of advantages.

This study analyzes the results of a displacement measurement of the Sungnyemun Gate’s structural members, such as column, girder, and hip rafter, carried out by the National Institute of Cultural Heritage for about 10 years from December 2013 to October 2022. Through this, we attempt to examine the behavior of wooden architectural heritage sites according to seasonal changes and infer the factors influencing structural deformation. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the structural members of the Sungnyemun Gate, including the columns, girders, and hip rafters, continued to move and that the displacement of members was accumulated, and the structure was deformed. It was also confirmed that member displacements accumulated in a specific direction. In the case of the Sungnyemun Gate, the column leaning south, the hip rafters’ endpoint sagging, and the girders’ center deflecting were continuously observed. Furthermore, the behavior of wooden architectural heritage sites, where displacement accumulates as it undergoes repeated deformation and recovery according to seasonal changes, was also revealed in detail. The deformation of the Sungnyemun Gate’s members shows a pattern that reflects the mechanical properties of wood, which repeatedly increases and decreases displacement depending on the season. However, seasonal deformation did not appear the same in all the members. Even the same member has an uneven drying speed due to differences in the amount of sunlight it receives depending on its location, which leads to uneven distribution of deformation. The significance of this study is that it examined the behavior of a wooden architectural heritage site in detail based on the quantitative results of long-term measurements and prepared primary data for the future management of wooden architectural heritage sites.

Abstract As many as 80% of critically ill patients develop delirium increasing the need for institutionalization and higher morbidity and mortality. Clinicians detect less than 40% of delirium when using a validated screening tool. EEG is the criterion standard but is resource intensive thus not feasible for widespread delirium monitoring. This study evaluated the use of limited-lead rapid-response EEG and supervised deep learning methods with vision transformer to predict delirium. This proof-of-concept study used a prospective design to evaluate use of supervised deep learning with vision transformer and a rapid-response EEG device for predicting delirium in mechanically ventilated critically ill older adults. Fifteen different models were analyzed. Using all available data, the vision transformer models provided 99.9%+ training and 97% testing accuracy across models. Vision transformer with rapid-response EEG is capable of predicting delirium. Such monitoring is feasible in critically ill older adults. Therefore, this method has strong potential for improving the accuracy of delirium detection, providing greater opportunity for individualized interventions. Such an approach may shorten hospital length of stay, increase discharge to home, decrease mortality, and reduce the financial burden associated with delirium.

Abstract Antarctica’s continental margins pose an unknown submarine landslide-generated tsunami risk to Southern Hemisphere populations and infrastructure. Understanding the factors driving slope failure is essential to assessing future geohazards. Here, we present a multidisciplinary study of a major submarine landslide complex along the eastern Ross Sea continental slope (Antarctica) that identifies preconditioning factors and failure mechanisms. Weak layers, identified beneath three submarine landslides, consist of distinct packages of interbedded Miocene- to Pliocene-age diatom oozes and glaciomarine diamicts. The observed lithological differences, which arise from glacial to interglacial variations in biological productivity, ice proximity, and ocean circulation, caused changes in sediment deposition that inherently preconditioned slope failure. These recurrent Antarctic submarine landslides were likely triggered by seismicity associated with glacioisostatic readjustment, leading to failure within the preconditioned weak layers. Ongoing climate warming and ice retreat may increase regional glacioisostatic seismicity, triggering Antarctic submarine landslides.

Abstract With rapid urbanization and global population growth, the amount of wasted aluminum foil is significantly increasing. Most deformed and contaminated foil is difficult to recycle; hence, it is landfilled or incinerated, causing environmental pollution. Therefore, using aluminum foil waste for electricity may be conducive to addressing environmental problems. In this regard, various literatures have explored the concept of energy generation using foil, while a crumple ball design for this purpose has not been studied. Thus, a recycled foil‐based crumpled ball triboelectric nanogenerator (RFCB‐TENG) is proposed. The crumpled ball design can minimize the effects of contamination on foil, ensuring efficient power output. Moreover, owing to novel crumpled design, the RFCB‐TENG has some outstanding characteristics to become a sustainable power source, such as ultralight weight, low noise, and high durability. By introducing the air‐breakdown model, the RFCB‐TENG achieved an output peak voltage of 648 V, a current of 8.1 mA cm3, and an optimum power of 162.7 mW cm3. The structure of the RFCB‐TENG is systemically optimized depending on the design parameters to realize the optimum output performance. Finally, the RFCB‐TENG operated 500 LEDs and 30‐W commercial lamps. This work paves the guideline for effectively fabricating the TENG using waste‐materials while exhibiting outstanding characteristics.

The analysis of sedimentary deposits influenced by bottom currents in glaciated continental margins provides crucial insights into paleo-depositional and oceanographic conditions. These reconstructions enable the assessment of interactions between advance and retreat of grounded ice sheets and past ocean circulation patterns. However, questions regarding these interactions and their specific mechanisms remain largely unanswered due to a lack of data in this remote area. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis by integrating marine geophysical data, surficial sediment cores, oceanographic measurements, and ocean circulation models. Our aim was to understand spatial and temporal variations in sedimentary and oceanographic conditions during the past glacial and interglacial periods in combination with the long-term stratigraphic evolution. By integrating and cross-referencing diverse datasets, we were able to infer how bottom-current-controlled deposits (i.e., contourites) developed along the western bathymetric high of the Central Basin in the northwestern Ross Sea margin, Antarctica. Contouritic deposits lying over and along the flanks of bathymetric highs were identified through their mound-shaped external geometry and acoustically stratified facies, characterized by reflectors pinching toward the moat. Acoustic facies and multi-beam backscatter results, in conjunction with sedimentary core data, revealed contrasting patterns. Bathymetric highs exhibited thin (10 m thick), finer-grained stratified sediments with lower backscatter. These findings indicate that seabed winnowing occurred by strong bottom current during past glacial periods as supported by sedimentological analysis. The pathways of the westward-deflected dense shelf water outflow and the westward-flowing along-slope current, as simulated by oceanographic models, explain the distinctive development of contourites influenced by bottom-current processes. Moreover, the large accumulations of sediment in the contourites, resulting from bathymetric barriers in the north of the Central Basin, may contribute to submarine slope failures.

Antarctic continental margin sediments are eroded from the shelf and transported to the slope/rise in association with changing ice sheet configuration. Understanding the dynamics of this transport pathway is important for utilizing distal deep-sea sedimentary archives to determine past changes in the Antarctic ice sheet. However, these connections are poorly understood. Here we present multi-proxy records of two sediment cores (BS17-GC01 and BS17-GC02) from the Bellingshausen Sea continental rise, to explore relationships between depositional regime and ice sheet dynamics. Two cores show depositional/sedimentological variations on glacial-interglacial scales. Biogenic sediments were deposited during MIS 1, 5, and 7 under open ocean conditions. Glacial to deglacial sediments were laminated as a result of varying intensity of bottom currents. Terrestrially derived sediments are inferred to be transported from shelf both as grounded ice advanced during glacial expansion, and as ice retreated during deglacial periods. Sediment color shifted to brown after deglacial periods with high Mn/Ti and occurrence of bioturbation, indicating increasing bottom water oxygenation in the study area. Since surface water production started to increase from deglacial periods, we infer increased bottom water oxygenation in this setting is due to ventilation (i.e., Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) formation), implying that AABW formation was increased during interglacial periods from deglacial period whereas was decreased during glacial periods. Thus, sedimentary/depositional changes in BS17-GC01 and BS17-GC02 are closely linked to ice sheet dynamics during the late Quaternary.

The shade avoidance syndrome (SAS) is a collective adaptive response of plants under shade highlighted by characteristic phenotypes such as hypocotyl elongation, which is largely mediated by concerted actions of auxin and GA. We identified ATHB2, a homeodomain-leucine zipper (HD-Zip) domain transcription factor known to be rapidly induced under shade condition, as a positive regulator of GA biosynthesis necessary for the SAS by transactivating the expression of GA20ox2, a key gene in the GA biosynthesis pathway. Based on promoter deletion analysis, EMSA and ChIP assay, ATHB2 appears to regulate the GA20ox2 expression as a direct binding target. We also found that the GA20ox2 expression is under negative control by TCP13, the effect of which can be suppressed by presence of ATHB2. Considering a rapid induction kinetics of ATHB2, this relationship between ATHB2 and TCP13 may allow ATHB2 to play a shade-specific activator for GA20ox by derepressing a pre-existing activity of TCP13.

Abstract Background The development of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is linked with higher mortality and poor neurological recovery. Previous studies have investigated the effect of the amount and distribution of the initial IVH on the prognosis of aSAH. However, no studies have assessed the relationship between the changes in IVH over time and the prognosis of aSAH. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the clearance rate of IVH, which can be represented by the IVH clot clearance rate (CCR), on the outcomes of aSAH. Methods The IVH CCR was calculated based on the difference between the initial and follow-up modified Graeb scores (mGS), which were assessed by initial and 7-day follow-up brain computed tomography, respectively. Poor functional outcome was defined as a modified Rankin Scale score of 3-6. Univariate and multivariable analyses were performed to assess the relationships between IVH CCR and other risk factors and the prognosis of patients. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to identify cut-off values of IVH CCR for predicting poor functional outcome. Results In total, 196 consecutive patients were diagnosed with aSAH between January 2014 and March 2018. Abstract To utilize thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) technology for future displays, it is necessary to develop host materials which harness the full potential of blue TADF emitters. However, no publication has reported such hosts yet. Although the most popular host for blue TADF, bis[2‐(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether oxide (DPEPO) guarantees high‐maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) TADF devices, they exhibit very short operational lifetimes. In contrast, long‐lifespan blue TADF devices employing stable hosts such as 3′,5‐di(9H‐carbazol‐9‐yl)‐[1,1′‐biphenyl]‐3‐carbonitrile (mCBP‐CN) exhibit much lower EQEmax than the DPEPO‐employed devices. Here, an elaborative approach for designing host molecules is suggested to achieve simultaneously stable and efficient blue TADF devices. The approach is based on engineering the molecular geometry, ground‐ and excited‐state dipole moments of host molecules. The engineered hosts significantly enhance delayed fluorescence quantum yields of TADF emitters, as stabilizing the charge‐transfer excited states of the TADF emitters and suppressing exciton quenching, and improve the charge balance. Moreover, they exhibit both photochemical and electrochemical stabilities. The best device employing one of the engineered hosts exhibits 79% increase in EQEmax compared to the mCBP‐CN‐employed device, together with 140% and 92‐fold increases in operational lifetime compared to the respective mCBP‐CN‐ and the DPEPO‐based devices.

Abstract Understanding mechanical behaviors influenced by electric potential and tribological contacts is important for verifying the robustness and reliability of applications based on metallic porous nanostructures in electrical stimulations. In this work, nickel-based metallic porous nanostructures were studied to characterize their mechanical properties and morphologically dependent contact areas during application of an electric potential using a nanoindenter. We observed that the indentation moduli of nickel-based metallic porous nanostructures were altered by pore size and application of electric potential. In addition, the structural aspects of the surface morphology of nickel-based porous nanostructures had a critical effect on the determination of contact area. We suggest that the relation between electric potential and the mechanical behaviors of metallic porous nanostructures can be crucial for building mechanically robust functional devices, which are influenced by electric potential. The morphological shape characteristics of metallic porous nanostructures can be alternative decisive factors for manipulation of tribological performance through regulation of contact area.

Purpose: The flow diversion effect of an intracranial stent is closely related to its metal coverage rate (MCR). In this study, the flow diversion effects of Enterprise and low-profile visualized intraluminal support (LVIS) stents are compared with those of a Pipeline flow diverter, focusing on the MCR change. Moreover, the changes in the flow diversion effect caused by the additional manipulations of overlapping and compaction are verified using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis.Methods: CFD analysis was performed using virtually generated stents mounted in an idealized aneurysm model. First, the flow diversion effects of single Enterprise, LVIS, and Pipeline devices were analyzed. The Enterprise and LVIS were sequentially overlapped and compared with a Pipeline, to evaluate the effect of stent overlapping. The effect of compacting a stent was evaluated by comparing the flow diversion effects of a single and two compacted LVIS with those of two overlapped, uncompacted LVIS and uncompacted and compacted Pipeline. Quantitative analysis was performed to evaluate the hemodynamic parameters of energy loss, average velocity, and inflow rate.Results: Statistically significant correlations were observed between the reduction rates of the hemodynamic parameters and MCR. The single LVIS without compaction induced a reduction in all the hemodynamic parameters comparable to those of the three overlapped Enterprise. Moreover, the two overlapped, uncompacted LVIS showed a flow diversion effect as large as that induced by the single uncompacted Pipeline. Compacted stents induced a better flow diversion effect than uncompacted stents. The single compacted LVIS induced a flow diversion effect similar to that induced by the two uncompacted LVIS or single uncompacted Pipeline.Conclusions: The MCR of a stent correlates with its flow diversion effect. Overlapping and compaction can increase the MCR of an intracranial stent and achieve a flow diversion effect as large as that observed with a flow diverter.

Lesion mimic mutants (LMMs) commonly exhibit spontaneous cell death similar to the hypersensitive defense response that occurs in plants in response to pathogen infection. Several lesion mimic mutants have been isolated and characterized, but their molecular mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, a spotted leaf sheath (sles) mutant derived from japonica cultivar Koshihikari is described. The sles phenotype differed from that of other LMMs in that lesion mimic spots were observed on the leaf sheath rather than on leaves. The sles mutant displayed early senescence, as shown, by color loss in the mesophyll cells, a decrease in chlorophyll content, and upregulation of chlorophyll degradation-related and senescence-associated genes. ROS content was also elevated, corresponding to increased expression of genes encoding ROS-generating enzymes. Pathogenesis-related genes were also activated and showed improved resistance to pathogen infection on the leaf sheath. Genetic analysis revealed that the mutant phenotype was controlled by a single recessive nuclear gene. Genetic mapping and sequence analysis showed that a single nucleotide substitution in the sixth exon of LOC_Os07g25680 was responsible for the sles mutant phenotype and this was confirmed by T-DNA insertion line. Taken together, our results revealed that SLES was associated with the formation of lesion mimic spots on the leaf sheath resulting early senescence and defense responses. Further examination of SLES will facilitate a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in ROS homeostasis and may also provide opportunities to improve pathogen resistance in rice.

Widespread diagenesis of clay minerals occurs in deeply buried marine sediments under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. For example, the smectite-to-illite (S-I) transformation has been often observed in sediments at in situ temperatures above ~60°C. However, it remains largely unknown whether such diagenetic processes naturally occur in relatively shallow and low-temperature sediments and, if so, what the consequences are of any related chemical reactions to the geochemical characteristics in the deep biosphere. We evaluated the possibility of naturally occurring S-I transformation at temperatures below 40°C in continental slope sediments of the Bering Sea by examining porewater chemistry, clay mineralogy, and chemical composition of clay minerals measured to ~800 m beneath the seafloor (mbsf) in core samples acquired during Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 323. In porewater from these cores, chloride concentrations decreased with increasing depth from 560 mM near the seafloor to 500 mM at ~800 mbsf; δ18O increased from 0 to 1.5‰; and δD decreased from −1 to −9‰. These trends are consistent with the addition of water derived from S-I transformation. The discrete low Cl− spikes observed between ~200 and ~450 mbsf could be attributed to the dissociation of methane hydrate. X-ray diffraction analysis of the clay-size fraction (

Plant height is an important agronomic trait that affects grain yield. Previously, we reported a novel semi-dominant dwarf mutant, HD1, derived from chemical mutagenesis using N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) on a japonica rice cultivar, Hwacheong. In this study, we cloned the gene responsible for the dwarf mutant using a map-based approach. Fine mapping revealed that the mutant gene was located on the short arm of chromosome 1 in a 48 kb region. Sequencing of the candidate genes and rapid amplification of cDNA ends-polymerase chain reaction (RACE-PCR) analysis identified the gene, d-h, which encodes a protein of unknown function but whose sequence is conserved in other cereal crops. Real-time (RT)-PCR analysis and promoter activity assays showed that the d-h gene was primarily expressed in the nodes and the panicle. In the HD1 plant, the d-h gene was found to carry a 63-bp deletion in the ORF region that was subsequently confirmed by transgenic experiments to be directly responsible for the gain-of-function phenotype observed in the mutant. Since the mutant plants exhibit a defect in GA response, but not in the GA synthetic pathway, it appears that the d-h gene may be involved in a GA signaling pathway.

Several groups have proposed the state-space approach to tracking time-varying frequencies of multiharmonic quasiperiodic signals. The extended Kalman filter/smoother (EKF/EKS) is one of the common frequency tracking approaches seen in the literature. We introduce a multiharmonic frequency tracker based on the forward-backward statistical linearized Sigma-Point Kalman smoother (FBSL-SPKS) and compare its performance to that of the extended Kalman smoother (EKS). In all cases the FBSL-SPKS tracker outperformed the EKS tracker over a wide range of signal-to-noise (SNR) ratios. We also demonstrate its superior performance on real signals.

The orbital-scale variations in biogenic CaCO3 and opal abundance in two piston cores collected in the central equatorial Pacific (core PC5101 from a southern site at _ and core PC5103 from a northern site at _ were compared to assess latitudinal differences. The correlation between the oxygen isotope stratigraphy of planktonic foraminifera (Globigerinoides sacculifer) of PC5103 with the LR04 stacks provides the age of PC5103 to be approximately 950 ka. The age of PC5103 was further refined by correlating the CaCO3 content with the well-dated core RC11-210. The age of PC5101 was also constrained by the same CaCO3 chronostratigraphic correlation with RC11-210, resulting in an age of approximately 650 ka. Distinct orbital-scale series of CaCO3 and opal variations appear to be parallel between the two cores during the past 600 ka, which are controlled mainly by eccentricity with an approximate periodicity of 100 ka. It is worth noting that the biogenic CaCO3 and opal deposition patterns in the two cores differ between interglacial and glacial periods. During interglacial periods the biogenic opal content is higher in the southern core than in the northern core, which corresponds with the present-day condition. In contrast the CaCO3 content is higher in the northern core, which is contradictory to the present-day northward decreasing CaCO3 deposition pattern from the Equator. The collection site of PC5101 is approximately 350 m deeper than that of PC5103, which significantly promotes CaCO3 dissolution and causes unexpectedly high CaCO3 content at the northern site in contrast to the biogenic opal content.

Understanding the effects of electrical potential on nanoscale contacts is critically needed for design and development of nanodevices. In the present letter, we characterize the metallic nanopore structure of nickel using an atomic force microscope. The morphology, phase distribution, and tribological behavior were studied under an applied electrical potential. It was found that the increase in electrical potential resulted in reduction of friction and pull-off force (adhesion), which is attributed to the real contact area change. Results indicated that the nanoporous structured Ni enables the control of friction and adhesion, which is beneficial for the design of nanoelectromechanical systems.

This study aimed to examine the feasibility of using time-to-contact measures during the perturbation protocol in people with diabetes mellitus. Three-dimension motion capture and force data were collected during 0.5-s perturbations in four directions (forward, backward, right, and left) and at two accelerations (20 and 40 cm/s2) to compute the time-to-contact. Time-to-contact analysis was divided into three phases: perturbation, initial recovery, and final recovery.
