Abstract

The150Sm(t,a)149Pm reaction was studied using 17MeV polarized tritons from the tandem Van de Graaff accelerator at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. The alpha particles were analyzed using a Q3D magnetic spectrometer and detected with a helicalcathode position-sensitive counter. The overall resolution was ~25 keV FWHM. In the present study many of the previous spin assignments have been confirmed, and some ambiguities in earlier studies have been resolved. The important levels at 416 and 751 keV that are strongly populated in the stripping reactions are shown to be 3/2+. Also new fragments of theg7/2 andd3/2 shell model states have been located. The deduced spectroscopic factors are compared to those measured in other promethium isotopes. It was found that the total (t, a) strength of the assigned peaks is stable within 15% for the chain of promethium isotopes ranging from mass number 147 to 153.

25. Study of spin-orbit interaction of13C and15N nuclei in14C induced transfer reactions on138Ba

Abstract

Angular distributions of single nucleon transfer reactions populating single particle states in the reactions138Ba(15C,14N)137Cs and138Ba(14C,13C)139Ba have been studied. The shapes of the angular distributions show differences for different final configurations. Using the reaction asymmetry it is possible to describe these differences consistently for all transitions by a spin-orbit potential. The polarisation of the outgoing fragments is discussed and its dependence on final configurations is explained. The spin-orbit potentials deduced from the reaction asymmetry are large, as compared to predictions of folding potentials. They are, however, consistent with measurements of spin-flip probabilities. The origin of theL-S interaction is to be found in coupling effects of second order in the heavy ion reaction.

Abstract

The neutron excess of the triton makes it possible to use this projectile in transfer reactions to reach nuclei of greater neutron excess than the target nucleus. Principal examples of such reactions are the (t, alpha ), (t, p) and (t,/sup 3/He) reactions, all of which have been used to study neutron rich nuclei. The authors discuss several of these examples and reports on more definitive mass measurements and spectroscopy of the low lying levels of some of these nuclei. In particular, results of using a polarized triton beam are discussed as this study leads to many new spin assignments. (31 refs).
