Abstract

The Visible and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIR) on board NASA's Dawn spacecraft (10) has been used in a global search for olivine on the Vestan surface (Supplementary Information). VIR revealed [...], Olivine is a major component of the mantle of differentiated bodies, including Earth. Howardite, eucrite and diogenite (HED) meteorites represent regolith, basaltic-crust, lower-crust and possibly ultramafic-mantle samples of asteroid Vesta, which is the lone surviving, large, differentiated, basaltic rocky protoplanet in the Solar System (1). Only a few of these meteorites, the orthopyroxene-rich diogenites, contain olivine, typically with a concentration of less than 25 per cent by volume (2). Olivine was tentatively identified on Vesta (3,4), on the basis of spectral and colour data, but other observations did not confirm its presence (5). Here we report that olivine is indeed present locally on Vesta's surface but that, unexpectedly, it has not been found within the deep, south-pole basins, which are thought to be excavated mantle rocks (6-8). Instead, it occurs as near-surface materials in the northern hemisphere. Unlike the meteorites, the olivine-rich (more than 50 per cent by volume) material is not associated with diogenite but seems to be mixed with howardite, the most common (7,9) surface material. Olivine is exposed in crater walls and in ejecta scattered diffusely over a broad area. The size of the olivine exposures and the absence of associated diogenite favour a mantle source, but the exposures are located far from the deep impact basins. The amount and distribution of observed olivine-rich material suggest a complex evolutionary history for Vesta.

Farnham Keywords: Comets; Comet Tempel-1; Comets; coma; Spectroscopy; Infrared observations Abstract: Prior to the impact event, Deep Impact monitored the ambient inner coma of Comet 9P/Tempel 1 at high spatial resolution in July 2005. Gaseous H.sub.2O and CO.sub.2 are unambiguously detected in the infrared spectra collected with the HRI-IR spectrometer aboard Deep Impact. Detailed distribution maps of these volatiles in the inner coma, within 60 km from the nucleus, are produced from the integrated emission bands of H.sub.2O (2.66 [mu]m) and CO.sub.2 (4.26 [mu]m). Uncorrelated asymmetries are determined in the spatial distribution of both species indicating chemical heterogeneities within the nucleus. Although present at some abundance surrounding the entire nucleus, H.sub.2O has a pronounced enhancement in abundance in the sunward direction rotational phases, evidence that the dominant process of subliming water ice from the nucleus is solar heating. In contrast, CO.sub.2 is enhanced in the regions near the negative rotational pole of the nucleus, suggesting localized outgassing there. Both species show an increase in radiance above the limb of the nucleus toward Ecliptic North. The distribution maps also suggest that the process of dust removal from the nucleus is strongly connected to the outgassing of volatiles. Detailed study of these coma asymmetries gives insight to the relative abundances of the dominant molecular components of the inner coma, source regions of the native volatiles, anisotropic outgassing of the nucleus, and the formation and evolution of the nucleus. A quiescent water production rate for Tempel 1 on July 4, 2005, is estimated to be 4.6x10.sup.27 moleculess.sup.-1. Abstract

Our knowledge of the interior structure of comets, particularly of the evolution of the outer layers at successive perihelion passages, is almost unconstrained by data and relies instead primarily on [...], Deep Impact collided with comet Tempel 1, excavating a crater controlled by gravity. The comet's outer layer is composed of 1- to 100-micrometer fine particles with negligible strength (1000 kelvins). A large increase in organic material occurred during and after the event, with smaller changes in carbon dioxide relative to water. On approach, the spacecraft observed frequent natural outbursts, a mean radius of 3.0 ± 0.1 kilometers, smooth and rough terrain, scarps, and impact craters. A thermal map indicates a surface in equilibrium with sunlight.

Abstract

Regolith, the fragmental debris layer formed from impact events of all sizes, covers the surface of all asteroids imaged by spacecraft to date. Here we use Framing Camera (FC) images [1] acquired by the Dawn spacecraft [2] from its low-altitude mapping orbit (LAMO) of 210 km (pixel scales of ~20 m) to characterize regolith depth, variability, and mobility on Vesta, and to locate areas of especially thin regolith and exposures of competent material. These results will help to evaluate how the surface of this differentiated asteroid has evolved over time, and provide key contextual information for understanding the origin and degree of mixing of the surficial materials for which compositions are estimated [3,4] and the causes of the relative spectral immaturity of the surface [5]. Vestan regolith samples, in the form of howardite meteorites, can be studied in the laboratory to provide complementary constraints on the regolith process [6].

Abstract

Before Dawn arrived at 4 Vesta only very low spatial resolution (~50 km) albedo and color maps were available from HST data. Also ground-based color and spectroscopic data were utilized as a first attempt to map Vesta’s mineralogical diversity [1-4]. The VIR spectrometer [5] onboard Dawn has ac-quired hyperspectral data while the FC camera [6] ob-tained multi-color data of the Vestan surface at very high spatial resolutions, allowing us to map complex geologic, morphologic units and features. We here re-port about the results obtained from a preliminary global mineralogical map of Vesta, based on data from the Survey orbit. This map is part of an iterative map-ping effort; the map is refined with each improvement in resolution.

The FC cameras onboard the Dawn spacecraft are expected to map the asteroid 4 Vesta in seven different colors from Survey Orbit in August 2011. We will present the first immediate results of the spectral mapping of the visible surface from FC images along with their association with surface compositional units. The first medium resolution observations of Vesta have been performed in July 2011

Abstract

The NASA Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission performed a kinetic impact on asteroid Dimorphos, the satellite of the binary asteroid (65803) Didymos, at 23:14 UTC on September 26, 2022 as a planetary defense test. DART was the first hypervelocity impact experiment on an asteroid at size and velocity scales relevant to planetary defense, intended to validate kinetic impact as a means of asteroid deflection. Here we report the first determination of the momentum transferred to an asteroid by kinetic impact. Based on the change in the binary orbit period, we find an instantaneous reduction in Dimorphos's along-track orbital velocity component of 2.70 +/- 0.10 mm/s, indicating enhanced momentum transfer due to recoil from ejecta streams produced by the impact. For a Dimorphos bulk density range of 1,500 to 3,300 kg/m$^3$, we find that the expected value of the momentum enhancement factor, $\beta$, ranges between 2.2 and 4.9, depending on the mass of Dimorphos. If Dimorphos and Didymos are assumed to have equal densities of 2,400 kg/m$^3$, $\beta$= 3.61 +0.19/-0.25 (1 $\sigma$). These $\beta$ values indicate that significantly more momentum was transferred to Dimorphos from the escaping impact ejecta than was incident with DART.
