To increase density of superconductor digital and neuromorphic circuits by 10x and reach integration scale of $10^8$ Josephson junctions (JJs) per chip, we developed a new fabrication process on 200-mm wafers, using self-shunted Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb JJs and kinetic inductors. The process has a layer of JJs, a layer of resistors, and 10 fully planarized superconducting layers: 8 Nb layers and 2 layers of high kinetic inductance materials, Mo$_2$N and NbN, with sheet inductance of 8 pH/sq and 3 pH/sq, respectively. NbN films were deposited by two methods: with $T_c$=15.5 K by reactive sputtering of a Nb target in Ar+N$_2$ mixture; with $T_c$ in the range from 9 K to 13 K by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using Tris(diethylamido)(tert-butylimido)niobium(V) metalorganic precursor. PECVD of NbN was investigated to obtain conformal deposition and filling narrow trenches and vias with high depth-to-width ratios, which was not possible to achieve using sputtering and other physical vapor deposition (PVD) methods at temperatures below $200 ^oC$ required to prevent degradation of Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb junctions. Nb layers with 200 nm thickness are used in the process layer stack as ground planes to maintain a high level of interlayer shielding and low intralayer mutual coupling, for passive transmission lines with wave impedances matching impedances of JJs, typically, Comment: 12 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables, 49 references. We present measurements of the self- and mutual inductance of NbN and bilayer NbN/Nb inductors with Nb ground plane(s) fabricated in an advanced process for superconductor electronics developed at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. In this process, the signal traces of logic cell inductors are made either of a 200-nm NbN layer with $T_c$=15 K or of an in-situ deposited NbN/Nb bilayer, replacing a 200-nm Nb layer M6 in the standard SFQ5ee process with nine superconducting layers. Nb ground planes were preserved to maintain a high level of interlayer shielding and low intralayer mutual coupling. A two-step patterning of the top Nb and the bottom NbN layers of the NbN/Nb bilayer allows to create inductors in a very wide range of linear inductance values, from low values ~ 0.4 pH/$\mu$m typical for Nb geometrical inductors to ~ 35 pH/$\mu$m typical to thin-film kinetic inductors. Mutual inductance of NbN and Nb inductors, of NbN inductors, and of bilayer inductors is the same as between two Nb inductors with the same geometry and placement between the ground planes, i.e., mutual inductance does not depend on superconducting properties of the signal traces in the studied range of linewidths. We measured magnetic field penetration depth and kinetic inductance of NbN films with thickness t=200 nm to be $\lambda$ = 491+/-5 nm and 1.51 pH/sq, and 2.06 pH/sq at t=150 nm. The kinetic inductance was found to be larger than that expected for superconductors with short mean free path, indicating a reduction in the superfluid density, likely due to carrier localization effects. We analyze the effect of circuit parameter variation on the performance of Josephson traveling-wave parametric amplifiers (JTWPAs). Specifically, the JTWPA concept we investigate is using flux-biased nonhysteretic rf-SQUIDs in a transmission line configuration, which harnesses the three-wave mixing (3WM) regime. Dispersion engineering enables phasematching to achieve power gain of $\sim$20 dB, while suppressing the generation of unwanted mixing processes. Two dispersion engineering concepts using a 3WM-JTWPA circuit model, i.e., resonant phase-matching (RPM) and periodic capacitance modulation (PCM), are discussed, with results potentially also applicable to four-wave-mixing (4WM) JTWPAs. We propose suitable circuit parameter sets and evaluate amplifier performance with and without circuit parameter variance using transient circuit simulations. This approach inherently takes into account microwave reflections, unwanted mixing products, imperfect phasematching, pump depletion, etc. In the case of RPM the resonance frequency spread is critical, while PCM is much less sensitive to parameter spread. We discuss degrees of freedom to make the JTWPA circuits more tolerant to parameter spread. Finally, our analysis shows that the flux-bias point where rf-SQUIDs exhibit Kerr-free nonlinearity is close to the sweet spot regarding critical current spread., 6 pages, 3 figures

Coated conductors with magnetic substrates are thin multilayer structures; their high aspect ratio and nonlinear material properties present significant difficulties for numerical simulation. Using the high width-to-thickness ratio of coated conductors we derive an integral formulation for a model based on an infinitely thin approximation for the superconducting layer and a quasistatic thin shell approximation for the magnetic substrate. The proposed model describes electromagnetic response of a coated conductor with a magnetic substrate and is much simpler than the existing models. A single dimensionless parameter characterizes the substrate having a finite magnetic permeability and a finite thickness. An accurate and efficient Chebyshev spectral method is derived for numerical solution. The influence of a magnetic substrate on the superconducting current and AC losses is investigated. Superconducting circuits are among the most advanced quantum computing technologies, however their performance is currently limited by losses found in surface oxides and disordered materials. Here, we identify and spatially localize a near-field signature of loss centers on tantalum films using terahertz scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM). Making use of terahertz nanospectroscopy, we observe a localized excess vibrational mode around 0.5 THz and identify this resonance as the boson peak, a signature of amorphous materials. Grazing-incidence wide-angle x-ray scattering (GIWAXS) shows that oxides on freshly solvent-cleaned samples are amorphous, whereas crystalline phases emerge after aging in air. By localizing defect centers at the nanoscale, our characterization techniques and results will inform the optimization of fabrication procedures for new low-loss superconducting circuits., 15 pages including supplement. 13 figures (4 in main text, 9 in supplement)

The newly discovered kagome superconductors represent a promising platform for investigating the interplay between band topology, electronic order, and lattice geometry. Despite extensive research efforts on this system, the nature of the superconducting ground state remains elusive. In particular, consensus on the electron pairing symmetry has not been achieved so far, in part owing to the lack of a momentum-resolved measurement of the superconducting gap structure. Here we report the direct observation of a nodeless, nearly isotropic, and orbital-independent superconducting gap in the momentum space of two exemplary CsV$_3$Sb$_5$-derived kagome superconductors -- Cs(V$_{0.93}$Nb$_{0.07}$)$_3$Sb$_5$ and Cs(V$_{0.86}$Ta$_{0.14}$)$_3$Sb$_5$, using ultrahigh resolution and low-temperature angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Remarkably, such a gap structure is robust to the appearance or absence of charge order in the normal state, tuned by isovalent Nb/Ta substitutions of V. Moreover, we observe a signature of the time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking inside the superconducting state, which extends the previous observation of TRS-breaking CDW in the kagome lattice. Our comprehensive characterizations of the superconducting state provide indispensable information on the electron pairing of kagome superconductors, and advance our understanding of unconventional superconductivity and intertwined electronic orders.

In a nanowire (NW) of a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI), the quantum-confinement of topological surface states leads to a peculiar subband structure that is useful for generating Majorana bound states. Top-down fabrication of TINWs from a high-quality thin film would be a scalable technology with great design flexibility, but there has been no report on top-down-fabricated TINWs where the chemical potential can be tuned to the charge neutrality point (CNP). Here we present a top-down fabrication process for bulk-insulating TINWs etched from high-quality (Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$)$_2$Te$_3$ thin films without degradation. We show that the chemical potential can be gate-tuned to the CNP and the resistance of the NW presents characteristic oscillations as functions of the gate voltage and the parallel magnetic field, manifesting the TI-subband physics. We further demonstrate the superconducting proximity effect in these TINWs, preparing the groundwork for future devices to investigate Majorana bound states., Comment: 32 pages. 22 main text, 10 SI

Flux transformers are the necessary component of all superconductor digital integrated circuits utilizing ac power for logic cell excitation and clocking, and flux biasing, e.g., Adiabatic Quantum Flux Parametron (AQFP), Reciprocal Quantum Logic, superconducting sensor arrays, qubits, etc. We consider limitations to the integration scale (device number density) imposed by the critical current of the ac power transmission lines and cross coupling between the adjacent transformers. The former sets the minimum line width and the mutual coupling length in the transformer, whereas the latter sets the minimum spacing between the transformers. Decreasing linewidth of superconducting (Nb) wires increases kinetic inductance of the transformer's secondary, decreasing its length and mutual coupling to the primary. This limits the minimum size of transformers. As a result, there is a minimum linewidth ~100 nm which determines the maximum achievable scale of integration. Using AQFP circuits as an example, we calculate dependence of the AQFP number density on linewidth for various types of transformers and inductors available in the SFQ5ee fabrication process developed at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, and estimate the maximum circuit density as a few million AQFPs per cm^2. We propose an advanced fabrication process for a 10x increase in the density of AQFP and other ac-powered circuits. In this process, inductors are formed from a patterned bilayer of a geometrical inductance material (Nb) deposited over a layer of high kinetic inductance material (e.g., NbN). Individual pattering of the bilayer layers allows to create stripline inductors in a wide range of inductances, from the low values typical to Nb striplines to the high values typical for NbN thin films, and preserve sufficient mutual coupling in stripline transformers with extremely low crosstalk., 18 pages, 18 figures, 45 references

Majorana bound states constitute one of the simplest examples of emergent non-Abelian excitations in condensed matter physics. A toy model proposed by Kitaev shows that such states can arise on the ends of a spinless $p$-wave superconducting chain. Practical proposals for its realization require coupling neighboring quantum dots in a chain via both electron tunneling and crossed Andreev reflection. While both processes have been observed in semiconducting nanowires and carbon nanotubes, crossed-Andreev interaction was neither easily tunable nor strong enough to induce coherent hybridization of dot states. Here we demonstrate the simultaneous presence of all necessary ingredients for an artificial Kitaev chain: two spin-polarized quantum dots in an InSb nanowire strongly coupled by both elastic co-tunneling and crossed Andreev reflection. We fine-tune this system to a sweet spot where a pair of Majorana bound states is predicted to appear. At this sweet spot, the transport characteristics satisfy the theoretical predictions for such a system, including pairwise correlation, zero charge, and stability against local perturbations of the Majorana state. While the simple system presented here can be scaled to simulate a full Kitaev chain with an emergent topological order, it can also be used imminently to explore relevant physics related to non-Abelian anyons., 35 pages, 11 figures

Topological properties of systems lead to the emergence of surface states which can be observed experimentally within the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements. Recently, the topological properties of Pb$_{2}$Pd were reported. In this paper, we discuss the role of the surface termination on the realized surface states. We discuss the termination dependence of the surface state for (001) and (110) surface. We demonstrate that the Pd terminated (001) surface allow realization of the Dirac cone-like surface state. In the case (110) we observe well visible surface states with parabolic-like dispersion relation in close vicinity of the Fermi level., 6 pages, 5 figures

The kagome metal CsV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ features an unusual competition between the charge-density-wave (CDW) order and superconductivity. Evidence for time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) inside the CDW phase has been accumulating. Hence, the superconductivity in CsV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ emerges from a TRSB normal state, potentially resulting in an exotic superconducting state. To reveal the pairing symmetry, we first investigate the effect of nonmagnetic impurity. Our results show that the superconducting critical temperature is insensitive to disorder, pointing to conventional $s$-wave superconductivity. Moreover, our measurements of the self-field critical current ($I_{c,sf}$), which is related to the London penetration depth, also confirm conventional $s$-wave superconductivity with strong coupling. Finally, we measure $I_{c,sf}$ where the CDW order is removed by pressure and superconductivity emerges from the pristine normal state. Our results show that $s$-wave gap symmetry is retained, providing strong evidence for the presence of conventional $s$-wave superconductivity in CsV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ irrespective of the presence of the TRSB, Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Electrical breakdown of a dielectric nanolayer between film electrodes under the combined action of direct current and capacitor discharge current makes it possible to form Josephson bridges with a reproducible resistance exceeding 1 {\Omega}. A new feature of the formation of a bridge during electrical breakdown, which is preceded by a series of preliminary breakdowns (auto breakdowns) of a dielectric nanolayer, has been discovered. The mechanism of the process and the role of the thickness of the cathode film in the formation of the bridge are discussed., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

A new type of low-pass filter based on a leaky coaxial waveguide is presented. The filter has minimal insertion loss in the pass band, while at the same time high attenuation in the stop band is achieved. Thanks to its arrangement, the filter does not present parasitic leakage paths, so that, unlike conventional resonant filters, the stop band extends to very high frequencies. It is shown that a particular stop-band attenuation can be obtained by adding or removing leaking sections. Coupling between the center coaxial structure and the leaking holes is investigated. A prototype is manufactured and scattering parameters are measured up to 145 GHz. The prototype shows an insertion loss of less than 0.15 dB up to 10 GHz and an attenuation in excess of 60 dB above 70 GHz. The proposed filter is suitable for superconducting quantum computing applications where qubits are sensitive to radiation with energy high enough to break Cooper-pairs, thereby destroying superconductivity.

Compressed hydrogen-rich compounds have received extensive attention as appealing contenders for superconductors, and further challenges are maintaining the stability and superconductivity of hydrides at lower pressures. In this work, we found several novel hydrides YZrH6, YZrH8 and YZrH12 with excellent superconductivity in the Y-Zr-H ternary system. Interestingly, YZrH6 with an A15-type structure can maintain dynamic stability down to 0.01 GPa and still with a critical temperature (Tc) of 16 K. YZrH8 and YZrH12 have high Tc of 70 K and 183 K at 200 GPa and 160 GPa, respectively. The phonon modes associated with H atoms contribute significantly to the electron-phonon coupling, and the H-driven electronic density of states play an important role in superconductivity. These findings highlight relationship between the H-driven electronic density of states, electron-phonon coupling and the superconductivity in a distinct class of hydrides, opening new avenues for designing and optimizing new hydrogen-rich high temperature superconductors., 15 pages, 8 figures

We detail the effects of Cl and S functionalization on the superconducting properties of layered (bulk) and monolayer niobium carbide (Nb2C) MXene crystals, based on first-principles calculations combined with Eliashberg theory. For bulk layered Nb2CCl2, the calculated superconducting transition temperature (T-c) is in very good agreement with the recently measured value of 6 K. We show that T-c is enhanced to 10 K for monolayer Nb2CCl2, due to an increase in the density of states at the Fermi level, and the corresponding electron-phonon coupling. We further demonstrate feasible gate- and strain-induced enhancements of T-c for both bulk-layered and monolayer Nb2CCl2 crystals, resulting in T-c values of around 38 K. In the S-functionalized Nb2CCl2 crystals, our calculations reveal the importance of phonon softening in understanding their superconducting properties. Finally, we predict that Nb3C2S2 in bulk-layered and monolayer forms is also superconducting, with a T-c of around 28 K. Considering that Nb2C is not superconducting in pristine form, our findings promote functionalization as a pathway towards robust superconductivity in MXenes.

A superconducting boron doped nanocrystalline diamond (B-NCD) coplanar waveguide resonator (CPR) is presented for kinetic inductance ($L_k$) and penetration depth ($\lambda_{\rm{L}}$) measurements at microwave frequencies of 0.4 to 1.2 GHz and at temperatures below 3 K. Using a simplified effective medium CPR approach, this work demonstrates that thin granular B-NCD films ($t\approx $ 500 nm) on Si have a large penetration depth ($\lambda_{\rm{L}}\approx 4.3$ to 4.4 $\mu$m), and therefore an associated high kinetic inductance ($L_{k,\square} \approx $ 670 to 690 pH/$\square$). These values are much larger than those typically obtained for films on single crystal diamond which is likely due to the significant granularity of the nanocrystalline films. Based on the measured Q factors of the structure, the calculated surface resistance in this frequency range is found to be as low as $\approx$ 2 to 4 $\mu\Omega$ at $T, Comment: First draft

We classify the pairing symmetries of three-dimensional superconductivity in the zinc-blende structure which can support an electronic environment to host unconventional high temperature superconductivity, and calculate the pairing symmetry in the presence of strong electron-electron correlation by the slave boson mean-field approach. We find that the $d_{2z^2-x^2-y^2} \pm id_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing state, a three dimensional analogy of the $d\pm id$ pairing in a two dimensional square lattice, is ubiquitously favored near half filling upon hole doping in both single-orbital and three-orbital models. However, unlike the two dimensional counterpart, the Bogoliubov quasiparticle spectrum of the three dimensional state upholds the full $T_d$ point group symmetry and encompasses point nodes along certain high symmetric lines., 9pages,6 figures and 7 tabulations

We present a computational investigation into the effects of chemical doping with 15 different elements on phase stability and superconductivity in the LaH10 structure. Most doping elements were found to induce softening of phonon modes, enhancing electron-phonon coupling and improving critical superconducting temperature while weakening dynamical stability. Unlike these dopants, Ce was found to extend the range of dynamical stability for LaH10 by eliminating the van Hove singularity near the Fermi level. The doped compound, La0.75Ce0.25H10, maintains high-temperature superconductivity. We also demonstrate that different Ce doping configurations in the LaH10 structure have a minimal effect on energetic stability and electron-phonon coupling strength. Our findings suggest that Ce is a promising dopant to stabilize LaH10 at lower pressures while preserving its high-temperature superconductivity.

The microscopic mechanism of Cooper pairing in a superconductor leaves its fingerprint on the symmetry of the order parameter. UTe$_2$ has been inferred to have a multi-component order parameter that entails exotic effects like time reversal symmetry breaking. However, recent experimental observations in newer-generation samples have raised questions about this interpretation, pointing to the need for a direct experimental probe of the order parameter symmetry. Here, we use pulse echo ultrasound to measure the elastic moduli of samples of UTe$_2$ that exhibit both one and two superconducting transitions. We demonstrate the absence of thermodynamic discontinuities in the shear elastic moduli of both single- and double-transition samples, providing direct evidence that UTe$_2$ has a single-component superconducting order parameter. We further show that the superconductivity is highly sensitive to compression strain along the $a$ and $c$ axes, but insensitive to strain along the $b$ axis. This leads us to suggest a single-component, odd-parity order parameter$-$specifically the B$_{2u}$ order parameter$-$as the most likely order parameter in UTe$_2$., 19 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables

Our measurements of $^{125}$Te NMR relaxations reveal an enhancement of electronic spin fluctuations above $\mu_0H^*\sim15$ T, leading to their divergence in the vicinity of the metamagnetic transition at $\mu_0H_m\approx35$ T, below which field-reinforced superconductivity appears when a magnetic field ($H$) is applied along the crystallographic $b$ axis. The NMR data evidence that these fluctuations are dominantly longitudinal, providing a key to understanding the peculiar superconducting phase diagram in $H\|b$, where such fluctuations enhance the pairing interactions., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The temperature dependence of the two superconducting gaps in pressurised H3S at 155 GPa with a critical temperature of 203 K has been determined by data analysis of the experimental curve of the upper critical magnetic field as a function of temperature in the framework of the two bands s wave Eliashberg theory, with two different phonon mediated intra-band Cooper pairing channels in a regime of moderate strong couplings with the key role of the pair exchange interaction between the two gaps giving the two non-diagonal terms of the coupling tensor which are missing in the single band s wave Eliashberg theory. The results provide the prediction of the different temperature dependence of the small and large gaps as a function of temperature which provide evidence of multi-gap superconductivity in H3S, 11 pages, 3 figures

Theoretical studies suggest that Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-like electron-phonon ($e$-ph) interactions can mediate high-temperature bipolaronic superconductivity that is robust against repulsive electron-electron interactions. Here we present a comparative analysis of the pairing and competing charge/bond correlations in the two-dimensional Holstein and optical Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) models using numerically exact determinant quantum Monte Carlo. We find that the SSH interactions support light bipolarons and strong superconducting correlations out to relatively large values of the $e$-ph coupling $\lambda$ and densities near half-filling, while the Holstein interaction does not due to the formation of heavy bipolarons and competing charge-density-wave order. We further find that the Holstein and SSH models have comparable pairing correlations in the weak coupling limit for carrier concentrations $\langle n \rangle \ll 1$, where competing orders and polaronic effects are absent. These results support the proposal that SSH (bi)polarons can support superconductivity to larger values of $\lambda$ in comparison to the Holstein polaron, but that the resulting $T_\mathrm{c}$ gains are small in the weak coupling limit. We also find that the SSH model's pairing correlations are suppressed after including a weak on-site Hubbard repulsion. Lattice strains of appropriate symmetry have served as an excellent tool to explore the interaction of superconductivity in the iron-based superconductors with nematic and stripe spin-density wave (SSDW) order, which are both closely tied to an orthorhombic distortion. In this work, we contribute to a broader understanding of the coupling of strain to superconductivity and competing normal-state orders by studying CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ under large, in-plane strains of $B_{1g}$ and $B_{2g}$ symmetry. In contrast to the majority of iron-based superconductors, pure CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ exhibits superconductivity with relatively high transition temperature of $T_c\,\sim\,$35 K in proximity of a non-collinear, tetragonal, hedgehog spin-vortex crystal (SVC) order. Through experiments, we demonstrate an anisotropic in-plane strain response of $T_c$, which is reminiscent of the behavior of other pnictides with nematicity. However, our calculations suggest that in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$, this anisotropic response correlates with the one of the SVC fluctuations, highlighting the close interrelation of magnetism and high-$T_c$ superconductivity. By suggesting moderate $B_{2g}$ strains as an effective parameter to change the stability of SVC and SSDW, we outline a pathway to a unified phase diagram of iron-based superconductivity., 5 pages, 4 figures + references and supplemental information

We perform a large scale study of conventional superconducting materials using a machine-learning accelerated high-throughput workflow. We start by creating a comprehensive dataset of around 7000 electron-phonon calculations performed with reasonable convergence parameters. This dataset is then used to train a robust machine learning model capable of predicting the electron-phonon and superconducting properties based on structural, compositional, and electronic ground-state properties. Using this machine, we evaluate the transition temperature (Tc ) of approximately 200000 metallic compounds, all of which on the convex hull of thermodynamic stability (or close to it) to maximize the probability of synthesizability. Compounds predicted to have Tc values exceeding 5 K are further validated using density-functional perturbation theory. As a result, we identify 545 compounds with Tc values surpassing 10 K, encompassing a variety of crystal structures and chemical compositions. This work is complemented with a detailed examination of several interesting materials, including nitrides, hydrides, and intermetallic compounds. Particularly noteworthy is LiMoN2 , which we predict to be superconducting in the stoichiometric trigonal phase, with a Tc exceeding 38 K. LiMoN2 has been previously synthesized in this phase, further heightening its potential for practical applications.

The origin of nematicity in FeSe remains a critical outstanding question towards understanding unconventional superconductivity in proximity to nematic order. To understand what drives the nematicity, it is essential to determine which electronic degree of freedom admits a spontaneous order parameter independent from the structural distortion. Here, we use X-ray linear dichroism at the Fe K pre-edge to measure the anisotropy of the 3d orbital occupation as a function of in situ applied stress and temperature across the nematic transition. Along with X-ray diffraction to precisely quantify the strain state, we reveal a lattice-independent, spontaneously-ordered orbital polarization within the nematic phase, as well as an orbital polarizability that diverges as the transition is approached from above. These results provide strong evidence that spontaneous orbital polarization serves as the primary order parameter of the nematic phase., Main: 22 pages, 4 figures. Supp: 32 pages, 18 figures

We investigate the dynamical onset of superconductivity in the exactly solvable Yukawa-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. It hosts an unconventional superconducting phase that emerges out of a non-Fermi liquid normal state, providing a toy model for superconductivity in a strongly correlated system. Analyzing dynamical protocols motivated by theoretical mechanisms proposed for light-induced superconductivity, that is light-induced cooling and the dressing of Hamiltonian parameters, we investigate the exact relaxation resulting out of undercooling and interaction quenches. While, in contrast to BCS theory, it is not possible for superconductivity to emerge following interaction quenches across the superconducting phase transition, we find that the dynamical relaxation of undercooled states universally leads to superconductivity. A recent experiment on the bulk compound 4Hb-TaS$_2$ reveals an unusual time-reversal symmetry-breaking superconducting state that possesses a magnetic memory not manifest in the normal state. Here we provide one mechanism for this observation by studying the magnetic and electronic properties of 4Hb-TaS$_2$. We discuss the criterion for a small magnetization in the normal state in terms of spin and orbital magnetization. Based on an analysis of lattice symmetry and Fermi surface structure, we propose that 4Hb-TaS$_2$ realizes superconductivity in the interlayer, equal-spin channel with a gap function whose phase winds along the Fermi surface by an integer multiple of $6\pi$. The enhancement of the magnetization in the superconducting state compared to the normal state can be explained if the state with a gap winding of $6\pi$ is realized, accounting for the observed magnetic memory. Recently, the bilayer perovskite nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ has been reported to show evidence of high-temperature superconductivity (SC) under a mild pressure of about 14 GP. To investigate the superconducting mechanism and pairing symmetry of the material, we perform a random-phase-approximation (RPA) based study on a bilayer two-orbital model, on both the perfect crystal and that with apical-oxygen deficiencies. Our results on the perfect crystal suggest that the leading pairing symmetry is the $s^\pm$-wave pairing with dominant $d_{3z^2-r^2}$-orbital content. The emergence of the $\gamma$- pocket centering around the Brillouin zone corner under pressure is crucial for this pairing. Then we focus on the role of the apical-oxygen deficiencies on the SC, based on a real-space RPA calculation. Our results reveal that local antiferromagnetic moment emerges in the region with rich apical-oxygen deficiencies due to lowering of the magnetic critical interaction strength, which is harmful for the formation of SC. We investigate superconducting transport in the DC field induced Wannier-Stark flat bands in the presence of interactions. Flat bands offer the possibility of unconventional high temperature superconductivity, where the superfluid weight, $D_s$, is enhanced by the density overlap of the localized states. However, construction of flat bands typically requires very precise tuning of Hamiltonian parameters. To overcome this difficulty, we propose a feasible alternative to realize flat bands by applying a DC field in a commensurate lattice direction. We systematically characterize the superconducting behavior on these flat bands by studying the effect of the DC field and attractive Hubbard interaction strengths on the wavefunction, correlation length, pairing order parameter and the superfluid weight $D_s$. Our main result is that the superfluid weight is dramatically enhanced at an optimal value of the interaction strength and weak DC fields.

Strange metals arise in a variety of platforms for strongly correlated electrons, ranging from the cuprates, heavy fermions to flat band systems. Motivated by recent experiments in kagome metals, we study a Hubbard model on a kagome lattice whose noninteracting limit contains flat bands. A Kondo lattice description is constructed, in which the degrees of freedom are exponentially localized molecular orbitals. We identify an orbital-selective Mott transition through an extended dynamical mean field theory of the effective model. The transition describes a quantum critical point at which quasiparticles are expected to be lost and strange metallicity emerges. Our theoretical work opens up a new route for realizing beyond-Landau quantum criticality and emergent quantum phases that it nucleates., 30 pages, 8 figures

We have demonstrated a possibility to perform a successful moderate-temperature (mid-T) heat treatment of a superconducting cavity directly in a cryostat. This method significantly reduces the number of operations required for Mid-T baking effect research. The data obtained indicate the possibility of baking the cavity directly in the cryomodule, allowing full use of the Mid-T baking effect in a real accelerator., 4 pages, 5 figures

We prove that the motion of a single hole induces $SU(N)$ flavor-singlets in the $U=\infty$ $SU(N)$ (Fermi) Hubbard model on a Husimi-like tree graph. The result is also generalized to certain $t$-$J$ models with antiferromagnetic interactions and singlet hopping terms typically neglected in the literature. This is an $SU(N)$ generalization of the "counter-Nagaoka theorem" introduced in [Phys. Rev. B 107, L140401 (2023)]. Our results suggest the existence of antiferromagnetic or resonating-valence-bond (RVB)-like polarons in the $t$-$J$ models on a more realistic non-bipartite lattice. Such antiferromagnetic/RVB polarons may be relevant for a novel strong-coupling mechanism of superconductivity or other exotic fractionalized phases of matter., 5 + 1 pages, 2 + 1 figures

The iron-based pnictide LaFe2As2 is not superconducting as-synthesized, but it becomes such below Tc around 12 K upon annealing, as a consequence of a structural transition from a phase with collapsed tetragonal crystal structure to an uncollapsed phase. In this work, we carry out specific heat, Raman spectroscopy and normal state electric and thermoelectric transport measurements in the collapsed and uncollapsed LaFe2As2 phases to gain insight into the electron interactions and their possible role in the superconducting pairing mechanism. Despite clear features of strong electron-phonon coupling observed in both phases, neither the low energy phonon spectra nor the electron-phonon coupling show significant differences between the two phases. Conversely, the Sommerfield constants are significantly different in the two phases, pointing to much higher electron correlation in the superconducting uncollapsed phase and confirming theoretical studies., In press on Physical Review B

We theoretically investigate the superfluid phase transition of helium-3 under nanoscale confinement of one spatial dimension realized in recent experiments. Instead of the 3x3 complex matrix order parameter found in the three-dimensional system, the quasi two-dimensional superfluid is described by a reduced 3x2 complex matrix. It features a nodal quasiparticle spectrum, regardless of the value of the order parameter. The origin of the 3x2 order parameter is first illustrated via the two-particle Cooper problem, where Cooper pairs in the $p_x$ and $p_y$ orbitals are shown to have a lower bound state energy than those in $p_z$ orbitals, hinting at their energetically favorable role at the phase transition. We then compute the Landau free energy under confinement within the mean-field approximation and show that the critical temperature for condensation of the 3x2 order parameter is larger than for other competing phases. Through exact minimization of the mean-field free energy, we show that mean-field theory predicts precisely two energetically degenerate superfluid orders to emerge at the transition that are not related by symmetry: the A-phase and the planar phase. Beyond the mean-field approximation, we show that strong-coupling corrections favor the A-phase observed in experiment, whereas weak-coupling perturbative renormalization group predicts the planar phase to be stable., 21 pages, 7 figures

In the nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride (Lu-H-N) system, the presence of Lu-N chemical bonds plays a key role in the emergence of possible room-temperature superconductivity at near ambient pressure. However, due to the synthesis of single-crystalline LuN being a big challenge, the understanding of LuN is insufficient thus far. Here, we report on the epitaxial growth of single-crystalline LuN films. The crystal structures of LuN films were characterized by high-resolution X-ray diffraction. The measurement of low-temperature electrical transport indicates the LuN film is semiconducting from 300 to 2 K, yielding an activation gap of $\sim$ 0.02 eV. Interestingly, negative magnetoresistances can be observed below 12 K, which can result from the defects and magnetic impurities in LuN films. Our results uncover the electronic and magnetic properties of single-crystalline LuN films.

Inducing Cooper pairing in a thin ferromagnetic topological insulator in the quantum anomalous Hall state (called quantum anomalous Hall insulator, QAHI) is a promising way to realize topological superconductivity with associated chiral Majorana edge states. However, finding evidence of superconducting proximity effect in a QAHI has proven to be a considerable challenge due to inherent experimental difficulties. Here we report the observation of crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) across a narrow superconducting Nb electrode contacting the chiral edge state of a QAHI, evinced by a negative nonlocal voltage measured downstream from the grounded Nb electrode. This is an unambiguous signature of induced superconducting pair correlation in the chiral edge state. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that CAR processes of the chiral edge are not strongly dependent on the nature of the superconductivity that mediates them. Nevertheless, the characteristic length of the CAR process is found to be much longer than the superconducting correlation length in Nb, which suggests that the CAR is in fact mediated by superconductivity induced on the QAHI surface. We investigate the switching current distributions of ferromagnetic anomalous Josephson junctions subjected to a linearly increasing bias current. Our study uncovers a significant correlation between the position of the switching current distributions and crucial system parameters, such as the strength of the spin-orbit coupling and the Gilbert damping parameter. This indicates that these parameters can be directly determined through experimental measurements. By conducting a comprehensive analysis of the interplay among noise, magnetization, phase dynamics, and the statistical properties of the switching current distribution, we deepen our understanding of these intriguing cryogenic spintronics devices. We present a detailed theoretical investigation of the linear and non-linear optical response in a model system for a disordered d-wave superconductor, showing that for both quantities the gap symmetry considerably changes the paradigm of the optical response based on the conventional s-wave case. For what concerns the linear response our findings agree with previous work showing that in strongly-disordered d-wave superconductors a large fraction of uncondensed spectral weight survives below Tc, making the optical absorption around the gap-frequency scale almost unchanged with respect to the normal state. Our numerical results are in excellent quantitative agreement with experiments in overdoped cuprates. In the non-linear regime we focus on the third-harmonic generation (THG), finding that, as already established for the s-wave case, in general a large THG is triggered by disorder-activated paramagnetic processes. However, in the d-wave case the BCS response is monotonously increasing in frequency, loosing any signature of THG enhancement when the THz pump frequency $\omega$ matches the gap maximum $\Delta$, a hallmark of previous experiments in conventional s-wave superconductors. Our findings, along with the mild polarization dependence of the response, provides an explanation for recent THG measurements in cuprates, setting the framework for the theoretical understanding of non-linear effects in unconventional cuprates., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

We study the conditions to realize an excitonic condensed phase in an electron-hole bilayer system with local Hubbard-like interactions at half-filling, where we can address the interplay with Mott localization. Using Dynamical Mean-Field Theory, we find that an excitonic state is stable in a sizeable region of a phase diagram spanned by the intra-layer (U) and inter-layer (V) interactions. The latter term is expected to favour the excitonic phase which is indeed found in a slice of the phase diagram with V > U . Remarkably, we find that when U is large enough, the excitonic region extends also for U > V in contrast with naive expectations. The extended stability of the excitonic phase can be linked to in-layer Mott localization and inter-layer spin correlations. Using a mapping to a model with attractive inter-layer coupling, we fully characterize the condensate phase in terms of its superconducting counterpart, thereby addressing its coherence and correlation length., 9 pages, 4 figures

Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under high pressure, we explore its potential charge and spin instabilities through combined model analysis and first-principles calculations. Taking into account the negative charge-transfer nature of high valence nickel, a fully correlated two-cluster model identifies a lattice-coupled rocksalt-type charge instability characterized by substantial fluctuations of oxygen holes. This instability is corroborated by density-functional-theory plus $U$ calculations that also reveal a strong tendency towards concurrent antiferromagnetic ordering. The charge, spin, and associated lattice instabilities are significantly suppressed with increasing external pressure, contributing to the emergence of superconductivity in pressurized La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$. Carrier doping is found to effectively suppress these instabilities, suggesting a viable strategy to stabilize a superconducting phase under ambient pressure.

Properties of superconducting devices depend sensitively on the parity (even or odd) of the quasiparticles they contain. Encoding quantum information in the parity degree of freedom is central in several emerging solid-state qubit architectures. Yet, accurate, non-destructive, and time-resolved parity measurement is a challenging and long-standing issue. Here we report on control and real-time parity measurement in a superconducting island embedded in a superconducting loop and realized in a hybrid two-dimensional heterostructure using a microwave resonator. Device and readout resonator are located on separate chips, connected via flip-chip bonding, and couple inductively through vacuum. The superconducting resonator detects the parity-dependent circuit inductance, allowing for fast and non-destructive parity readout. We resolved even and odd parity states with signal-to-noise ratio SNR $\approx3$ with an integration time of $20~\mu$s and detection fidelity exceeding 98%. Real-time parity measurement showed state lifetime extending into millisecond range. Our approach will lead to better understanding of coherence-limiting mechanisms in superconducting quantum hardware and provide novel readout schemes for hybrid qubits.

We report strongly correlated electronic band structure calculations of the recently discovered double-layer high-temperature superconductor La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure. Our calculations reveal dual nature of Ni-$d$ electrons with almost localized $d_{z^2}$ orbitals due to onsite Coulomb repulsion and very flat hybridization bands of Ni-$d_{x^2-y^2}$ and Ni-$d_{z^2}$ quasiparticles near the Fermi energy. We find that the quasiparticle effective mass are greatly enhanced by the Hund's rule coupling and their lifetimes are inversely proportional to the temperature, which explains the experimentally observed strange metal behavior in the normal state. We also find strong antiferromagnetic spin correlations of Ni-$d$ electrons, which may provide the pairing force of quasiparticles for the high-temperature superconductivity. These give a potential explanation of two key observations in experiment and connect the superconducting La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ with cuprate high-temperature superconductors. The presence of flat bands and the interplay of orbital-selective Mott, Hund, and Kondo physics make La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ a unique platform for exploring rich emergent quantum many-body phenomena in the future., 6 pages, 4 figures

Biasing a three-terminal Josephson junction (TTJ) with symmetrical voltages $0,V,-V$ leads to new kinds of DC currents, namely quartet Josephson currents and phase-dependent multiple Andreev reflection (MAR) currents. We study these currents in a system where a normal diffusive metallic node $N$ is connected to three terminals $S_{0,1,2}$ by barriers of arbitrary transparency. We use the quantum circuit theory to calculate the current in each terminal, including decoherence. In addition to the stationary combination $\varphi_Q=\varphi_1+\varphi_2-2\varphi_0$ of the terminal phases $\varphi_i$, the bias voltage $V$ appears as a new and unusual control variable for a DC Josephson current. A general feature is the sign changes of the current-phase characteristics, manifesting in minima of the quartet ``critical current". Those sign changes can be triggered by the voltage, by the junction transparency or by decoherence. We study the possible separation of quartet currents from MAR currents in different regimes of parameters, including an "funnel" regime with very asymmetric couplings to $S_{0,1,2}$. In the regime of low transparency and asymetric couplings, we provide an analytic perturbative expression for the currents which shows an excellent agreement with the full numerical results.

Harnessing spin and parity degrees of freedom is of fundamental importance for the realization of emergent quantum devices. Nanostructures embedded in superconductor--semiconductor hybrid materials offer novel and yet unexplored routes for addressing and manipulating fermionic modes. Here we spectroscopically probe the two-dimensional band structure of Andreev bound states in a phase-controlled hybrid three-terminal Josephson junction. Andreev bands reveal spin-degeneracy breaking, with level splitting in excess of 9 GHz, and zero-energy crossings associated to ground state fermion parity transitions, in agreement with theoretical predictions. Both effects occur without the need of external magnetic fields or sizable charging energies and are tuned locally by controlling superconducting phase differences. Our results highlight the potential of multiterminal hybrid devices for engineering quantum states.

Localized or propagating Majorana boundary modes are the key feature of topological superconductors. While being a rarity in natural compounds, the tailored manipulation of quantum matter offers novel opportunities for their realization. Specifically, lattices of Shiba bound states that arise when magnetic adatoms are placed on the surface of a conventional superconductor can be used to create topological minibands within the superconducting gap of the substrate. Here, we exploit the possibilities of scanning tunneling microscopy to create and probe adatom lattices with single atom precision to create topological crystalline superconductors. Their topological character and boundary modes are protected by the spatial symmetries of the adatom lattice. We combine scanning probe spectroscopy, spin-sensitive measurements, first principle calculations, and theoretical modeling to to reveal signatures consistent with the realization of two types of mirror-symmetry protected topological superconductors: (i) with full bulk gap and topological edge as well as higher-order corner states and (ii) with symmetry-protected bulk nodal points. A hallmark of many unconventional superconductors is the presence of many-body interactions which give rise to broken symmetry states intertwined with superconductivity. Recent resonant soft x-ray scattering experiments report commensurate $3a_0$ charge density wave order in the infinite layer nickelates, which has important implications regarding the universal interplay between charge order and superconductivity in both the cuprates and nickelates. Here, we present x-ray scattering and spectroscopy measurements on a series of NdNiO$_{2+x}$ samples which reveal that the signatures of charge density wave order are absent in fully reduced, single-phase NdNiO$_2$. The $3a_0$ superlattice peak instead originates from a partially reduced impurity phase where excess apical oxygens form ordered rows with 3 unit cell periodicity. The absence of any observable charge density wave order in NdNiO$_2$ highlights a crucial difference between the phase diagrams of the cuprate and nickelate superconductors., Main Text: 8 pages, 4 figures. Applying a magnetic field to a solid changes its thermal-transport properties. Although such magneto-thermal-transport phenomena are usually small effects, giant magneto-thermal resistance has recently been observed in spintronic materials1,2 and superconductors3,4, opening up new possibilities in thermal management technologies. However, the thermal conductivity conventionally changes only when a magnetic field is applied due to the absence of nonvolatility, which limits potential applications of thermal switching devices5,6. Here, we report the observation of nonvolatile thermal switching that changes the thermal conductivity when a magnetic field is applied and retains the value even when the field is turned off. This unconventional magneto-thermal switching, surprisingly, arises in commercial Sn-Pb solders and is realized by phase-separated superconducting states and resultant nonuniform magnetic flux distributions. We examine the dynamical magnetic response in a two-component resonating-valence-bond (RVB) description of the doped Mott insulator. The half-filled antiferromagnetic phase described by the Schwinger-boson mean-field theory will evolve into a bosonic-RVB state in the superconducting phase upon doping, where the doped holes introduce another fermionic itinerant spinon which forms a BCS-like RVB order. The spin excitations are thus composed of a resonance-like mode from the former and a weak dispersive mode from the itinerant component at the mean-field level. These two-component spinons are shown to give rise to an hourglass-like spin excitation at the RPA level via an antiferromagnetic coupling between the two modes, which provides an unconventional explanation of the experimental observations in the cuprate. In particular, we also discuss an instability towards an incommensurate magnetic order in this theoretical framework., 14 pages, 9 figures

Isotope $^{121,123}$Sb nuclei with large electric quadrupole moments are applied to investigate the dynamics of orbital degrees of freedom in Sb-substituted iron(Fe)-based compounds. In the parent compound LaFe(As$_{0.6}$Sb$_{0.4}$)O, the nuclear spin relaxation rate $^{121,123}(T_{1}^{-1})$ at $^{121,123}$Sb sites was enhanced at structural transition temperature ($T_{s}\sim$ 135 K), which is higher than N\'eel temperature ($T_{\rm N}\sim$125 K). The isotope ratio $^{123}(T_{1}^{-1})/^{121}(T_{1}^{-1})$ indicates that the electric quadrupole relaxation due to the dynamical electric field gradient at Sb site increases significantly toward $T_{s}$. It is attributed to the critically enhanced nematic fluctuations of stripe-type arrangement of Fe-$3d_{xz}$ (or $3d_{yz}$) orbitals. In the lightly electron-doped superconducting (SC) compound LaFe(As$_{0.7}$Sb$_{0.3}$)(O$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$), the nematic fluctuations are largely suppressed in comparison with the case of the parent compound, however, it remains a small enhancement below 80 K down to the $T_c$($\sim$ 20 K). The results indicate that the fluctuations from both the spin and orbital degrees of freedom on the $3d_{xz}$(or $3d_{yz}$) orbitals can be seen in lightly electron-doped SC state of LaFeAsO-based compounds. We emphasize that isotope $^{121,123}$Sb quadrupole moments are sensitive local probe to identify the dynamics of orbital degrees of freedom in Fe-pnictides, which provides with a new opportunity to discuss the microscopic correlation between the superconductivity and both nematic and spin fluctuations simultaneously even in the polycrystalline samples., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures and 1 supplemental file

Recently, high-Tc superconductivity is reported in the bulk nickelate $\mathrm{La_3Ni_2O_7}$ at pressures above 14 GPa. Here, we study an eleven-band Hubbard model with hopping parameters derived from \textit{ab initio} calculations of $\mathrm{La_3Ni_2O_7}$, by employing large scale determinant quantum Monte Carlo and cellular dynamical mean-field theory methods. Our result suggests that the superexchange couplings in this system are comparable to that of cuprates. The superexchange couplings between the intra-layer $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals are comparable to its cuprates counterpart, and that between the inter-layer $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals are substantially stronger than the former. The system is a charge transfer insulator as hole concentration becomes four per site at large Hubbard $U$. Upon hole doping, two low-energy spin-singlet bands emerge in the system exhibiting distinct correlation properties: while the one composed of the out-of-plane Ni-$d_{3z^2-r^2}$ and O-$p_z$ orbitals demonstrates strong antiferromagnetic correlations and narrow effective bandwidth, the in-plane singlet band consisting of the Ni-$d_{x^2-y^2}$ and O-$p_x / p_y$ orbitals is in general more itinerant. Over a broad range of hole doping, the doped holes occupy primarily the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $p_x / p_y$ orbitals, as the $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ and $p_z$ orbitals retain underdoped. We propose an effective $ t-J$ model to capture the relevant physics and discuss the implications of our result for comprehending the $\mathrm{La_3Ni_2O_7}$ superconductivity.
