This paper presents, optimization analysis of energy detection based cooperative spectrum sensing system (CSSS) with hard-decision combining. Several system parameters are optimized to evaluate an optimal performance theoretically over noisy and generalized fading channels. In particular, wireless environments with noise plus $$\kappa -\mu $$ and $$\eta -\mu $$ fading are considered in the sensing channels. More precisely, each secondary user (SU, also called as cognitive radio user) depend on an energy detector (ED). The SU collects the signal from the primary user (PU), is given as input to the ED, and the energy of the signal is calculated for making a binary decision locally. The locally obtained decisions are combined using hard-decision combining and a final decision about position of the PU is made. In this work, the novel mathematical expressions for detection probability of a single SU is derived first, subject to noise plus fading and validated by using Monte Carlo simulations. Next, we develop theoretical frame works for optimization analysis of CSSS using derived mathematical expressions. The channel error probability is considered in both sensing and reporting channels. Further, we derive closed-form optimal expressions of number of SUs and detection threshold subject to generalized fading and optimal values are calculated. Through receiver operating characteristics (ROC), complementary ROC and total error rate, system performance is evaluated for the significant influence of channel and network parameters. Finally, the influence of the generalized fading severity parameters, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the number of SUs, the detection threshold, and the channel error probability on the performance of CSSS is also investigated.

In this paper, the analytical performance evaluation of the cooperative cognitive radio network (CCRN) with hard-decision and soft-data fusions is investigated in the presence of noisy and generalized $\kappa -\mu$ fading channel. The novel expressions to calculate detection probability of CCRN subject to $\kappa -\mu$ fading and fusion are derived. The analysis of various fusions is evaluated and compared. The performance of CCRN, considering an erroneous sensing and reporting channels, is studied. Also, an optimal threshold subject to fusion scheme is computed. The CCRN performance is evaluated through miss detection probability and total error rate, considering the significant impact of channel and network parameters. Finally, Monte Carlo simulation is performed to validate the derived expressions.

In this paper, we propose a cooperative cognitive radio network (CCRN) based on energy detection and hard-decision fusion. The performance characteristics are investigated analytically in the presence of noise plus generalized fading channels. In particular, scenarios with $$\kappa$$ – $$\mu$$ and $$\eta$$ – $$\mu$$ fading channels affecting the sensing channels are considered. More precisely, Each cognitive radio user (CRU) relies on an energy detector (ED). The signal from the primary user (PU), received by a CRU, is fed to the ED, and the energy of signal is used to make a local decision. At the fusion center (FC), the decisions received at the FC are fused, using hard-decision fusion, to obtain a final decision on the status of the PU. The performance of CCRN, through total error rate and throughput is evaluated considering the impact of relevant network parameters. Towards that, first we derive the novel mathematical expressions for probability of detection, subject to generalized fading. Also, Monte Carlo simulation is performed to validate the derived expressions. Next, the analytical frame works based on derived expression for evaluating total error rate and throughput performances for any network and channel conditions are developed. Further, the impact of an erroneous sensing (S) and reporting (R) channels on overall performance of CCRN is also investigated. Finally, the impact of the generalized fading parameters, the signal-to-noise ratio, the time-bandwidth product, the number of CRUs, the detection threshold, and the channel error probability on the total error rate and throughput performances is investigated.

In this paper, a cooperative spectrum sensing system (CSSS) based on energy detection method and hard-decision fusion is proposed. The performance through complementary receiver operating characteristics (CROC), total error rate (TER), and throughput is analytically investigated under the influence of noise and generalized κ – μ fading. More precisely, each cognitive radio (CR) senses the PU through erroneous sensing (S) channels and reports the sensing information in the form of binary-decision obtained using energy detector (ED) to fusion center (FC) through erroneous reporting (R) channels. Next, the hard-decision is performed at FC to obtain a global decision on the status (active or inactive) of the PU. Towards that, we derive a novel-analytic expression of detection probability subject to noise and κ – μ fading is derived. The analytical frame works based on derived expression for evaluating TER and throughput performance for any network and channel conditions are developed. Further, the CSSS performance for differen network parameters such as channel error probability, time bandwidth product, signal to noise ratio (SNR), number of CRs, detection threshold under various fusion rules is investigated. Finally, an optimal detection threshold, an optimal number of CRs, and maximum throughput for several network parameters subject fusion rule are also determined.
