The first international symposium on the subject'The Physics and Chemistry of Si02 and the Si-Si02 Interface,'organized in association with the Electrochemical Society, Inc., was held in Atlanta, Georgia on May 15- 20, 1988. This symposium contained sixty papers and was so successful that the sponsoring divisions decided to schedule it on a regular basis every four years. Thus, the second symposium on'The Physics and Chemistry of Si02 and the Si02 Interface was held May 18-21, 1992 in St. Louis, Missouri, again sponsored by the Electronics and Dielectrics Science and Technology Divisions of The Electrochemical Society. This volume contains manuscripts of most of the fifty nine papers presented at the 1992 symposium, and is divided into eight chapters - approximating the organization of the symposium. Each chapter is preceded with an introduction by the session organizers. It is appropriate to provide a general assessment of the current status and understanding of the physics and chemistry of Si02 and the Si02 interface before proceeding with a brief overview of the individual chapters. Semiconductor devices have continued to scale down in both horizontal and vertical dimensions. This has resulted in thinner gate and field oxides as well as much closer spacing of individual device features. As a result, surface condition, native oxide composition, and cleaning and impurity effects now provide a much more significant contribution to the properties of oxides and their interfaces.

The II. International Conference on Ion Beam Surface Layer Analysis was held on September 15-19, 1975 at the Nuclear Research Center, Karlsruhe, Germany. The date fell between two related con­ ferences:'Application of Ion-Beams to Materials'at Warwick, Eng­ land and'Atomic Collisions in Solids'at Amsterdam, the Nether­ lands. The first conference on Ion Beam Surface Layer Analysis was held at Yorktown Heights, New York, 1973. The major topic of that and the present conference was the material analysis with ion beams including backscattering and channeling, nuclear reactions and ion induced X-rays with emphasis on technical problems and no­ vel applications. The increasing interest in this field was docu­ mented by 7 invited papers and 85 contributions which were presen­ ted at the meeting in Karlsruhe to about 150 participants from 21 countries. The oral presentations were followed by parallel ses­ sions on'Fundamental Aspects','Analytical Problems'and'Appli­ cations'encouraging detailed discussions on the topics of most current interest. Summaries of these sessions were presented by the discussion leaders to the whole conference. All invited and contributed papers are included in these proceedings; summaries of the discussion sessions will appear in a separate booklet and are availble from the editors. The application of ion beams to material analysis is now well established.

Integral geometry deals with the problem of determining functions by their integrals over given families of sets. These integrals de?ne the corresponding integraltransformandoneofthemainquestionsinintegralgeometryaskswhen this transform is injective. On the other hand, when we work with complex measures or forms, operators appear whose kernels are non-trivial but which describe important classes of functions. Most of the questions arising here relate, in one way or another, to the convolution equations. Some of the well known publications in this?eld include the works by J. Radon, F. John, J. Delsarte, L. Zalcman, C. A. Berenstein, M. L. Agranovsky and recent monographs by L. H¨ ormander and S. Helgason. Until recently research in this area was carried out mostly using the technique of the Fourier transform and corresponding methods of complex analysis. In recent years the present author has worked out an essentially di?erent methodology based on the description of various function spaces in terms of - pansions in special functions, which has enabled him to establish best possible results in several well known problems.

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium on Surface Effects in the Mechanics of Nanomaterials and Heterostructures, held in Beijing, 8-12 August, 2010. The symposium brought together the most active scientists working in this area from the fields of solid mechanics, composites, physics, and materials science and summarized the state-of-the-art research results with a view to advancing the frontiers of mechanics and materials physics. Nanomaterials and heterostructures have a large fraction of their atoms at surfaces and interfaces. These atoms see a different environment to those in the interior and can have a substantial effect on the overall mechanical and physical behaviour of a material. The last decade has witnessed a growing interest in the study of surfaces and how the surface behaviour couples with that of the bulk to determine the overall system response. The papers in this proceedings cover: extension of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics to the nano-scale; multiscale simulations; surface effects in monolithic nano-scale elements and nanostructures; mechanical and physical properties of nanomaterials and heterostructures; self-assembly, etc. The surface stress effect is inherently a multidisciplinary and fertile field; the Symposium truly reflects these features. This IUTAM Symposium was also dedicated to Professor Bhushan L Karihaloo of Cardiff University on his impending retirement, in recognition of his contributions to the fields of solid mechanics and nanomechanics, and to IUTAM activities in general.

Vallombrosa Center was host during the week September 7-12, 1985 to about 40 mathematicians, physical scientists, and engineers, who share a common interest in free surface phenomena. This volume includes a selection of contributions by participants and also a few papers by interested scientists who were unable to attend in person. Although a proceedings volume cannot recapture entirely the stimulus of personal interaction that ultimately is the best justification for such a gathering, we do offer what we hope is a representative sampling of the contributions, indicating something of the varied and interrelated ways with which these classical but largely unsettled questions are currently being attacked. For the participants, and also for other specialists, the 23 papers that follow should help to establish and to maintain the new ideas and insights that were presented, as active working tools. Much of the material will certainly be of interest also for a broader audience, as it impinges and overlaps with varying directions of scientific development. On behalf of the organizing committee, we thank the speakers for excellent, well-prepared lectures. Additionally, the many lively informal discussions did much to contribute to the success of the conference.

An understanding of the processes involved in the basic and applied physics and chemistry of the interaction of plasmas with materials is vital to the evolution of technologies such as those relevant to microelectronics, fusion and space. The subjects dealt with in the book include: the physics and chemistry of plasmas, plasma diagnostics, physical sputtering and chemical etching, plasma assisted deposition of thin films, ion and electron bombardment, and plasma processing of inorganic and polymeric materials. The book represents a concentration of a substantial amount of knowledge acquired in this area - knowledge which was hitherto widely scattered throughout the literature - and thus establishes a baseline reference work for both established and tyro research workers.

Interface characterization and control are critical in the design and manufacture of high quality advanced materials, particularly, for nanomaterials. This proceedings features papers on interface science and technology that provide a unique and state-of-the art perspective on interface characterization and control. The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center in coop­ eration with the Materials Science Group of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science of Syracuse University has been conducting the Annual Sagamore Army Materials Research Conference since 1954. The specific purpose of these conferences has been to bring together over 150 scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Department of Defense, the Army and the scientific community. These proceedings, entitled SURFACE TREATMENTS FOR IM­ PROVED PERFORMANCE AND PROPERTIES, address the Physical and Chemical Characteristics of Surfaces, Emerging Surface Modi­ fication Techniques, Surface Structure and Mechanical Proper­ ties, and Relationships between Properties and Processing for Non-metric Materials. This book represents the proceedings of the second inter­ disciplinary conference on materials characterization held from July 30 through August 3, 1984 at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. The conference was the 20th in the University Series on Ceramic Science, instituted in 1964 by Alfred University, the University of California at Berkeley, North Carolina State University and Notre Dame University. Volume I of the proceedings of the first conference using this interdisciplinary approach to materials characterization was published as'Advances in Materials Characterization', edited by D. R. Rossington, R. A. Condrate and R. L. Snyder, and was listed as volume 15 of the Materials Science Research series of Plenum Press (New York, 1983). The purpose of bringing together scientists from a wide range of disciplines to present and discuss the latest developments in their fields is to promote cross fertilization. The first conference of this type and its resulting volume of proceedings stimulated a significant dialogue between disciplines concerning the characterization of materials, therefore indicating a need for a continuing series of such conferences. Characterization lies at the core of materials science.

The characterization of materials and phenomena has historically been the principal limitation to the development in each area of science. Once what we are observing is well defined, a theoretical analysis rapidly follows. Modern theories of chemical bonding did not evolve until the methods of analytical chemistry had progressed to a point where the bulk stoichiometry of chemical compounds was firmly established. The great progress made during this century in understanding chemistry has followed directly from the development of an analytical chemistry based on the Dalton assumption of multiple proportions. It has only become apparent in recent years that the extension of our understanding of materials hinges on their non-stoichiometric nature. The world of non-Daltonian chemistry is very poorly understood at present because of our lack of ability to precisely characterize it. The emergence of materials science has only just occurred with our recognition of effects, which have been thought previously to be minor variations from ideality, as the principal phenomena controlling properties. The next step in the historical evolution of materials science must be the development of tools to characterize the often subtle phenomena which determine properties of materials. The various discussions of instrumental techniques presented in this book are excellent summaries for the state-of-the-art of materials characterization at this rather critical stage of materials science. The application of the tools described here, and those yet to be developed, holds the key to the development of this infant into a mature science.

Over the last few years there has been increasing need for systematic and straregically designed experiments of surface morphology evolution resulting form ion bombardment induced sputtering. Although there is an impressive number of investi­ gations {1} concerned with semiconductor materials as a result of immediate applications, the most systematic investigations have been conducted with fcc metals with particular interest on single crystal Cu {2,3}. Evidence now exists that within certain para­ meters (i. e ion species (Ar+), ion energy (20-44 KeV), substrate 2 temperature (80-550° K), dose rate (100-500 gA cm-), residual x 5 9 pressure (5 10- to 5x10- mm Hg) and polar and azimuthal angle of ion incidence {4} reproducible surface morphology (etch pits and pyramids) is achieved on the (11 3 1) specific crystallographic orientation. The temporal development of individual surface features was alsoobserved in this laterstudy {4}, by employing an in situ ion source in the scanning electron microscope at Salford, a technique also empolyed in studies of the influence of polar angle of ion incidence {5} and surface contaminants {6} on the topographyof Ar+ bombarded Si. Studies have also been made on the variation of incident ion species with the (11 3 1) Cu surface and it was fully recognized {7} that residual surface contaminants when present could playa major role in dictating the morhological evolution.

Over 160 scientists and engineers from academia and industry from 18 different countries attended ICCCI2009 to see and discuss 140 invited and contributed presentations and posters on the state-of-the-art of interface characterization and control for particulate materials, joining, and nanotechnology.

Surface Engineering', by definition, is the “synergistic combination of bulk and surface materials to yield a system with properties that neither is capable of providing on its own”. In the modern industrial world, this approach is being increasingly adopted to achieve increased reliability and enhanced performance of degradation-prone industrial components. It encompasses coating and surface treatment processes, capable of altering surface properties to provide improved resistance against deterioration due to mechanisms such as corrosion, oxidation, wear or failure under an excessive heat load. The wide spectrum of surface technologies accessible to design engineers today include electro-deposition, diffusion coatings, thermal spraying, physical and chemical vapour deposition, sol-gel coatings, plasma and laser assisted surface modification etc. Advances in the field of coatings technology in recent years have made it possible to realize the immense potential of surface engineering in diverse industry segments. Although surface engineering is of growing industrial relevance globally, the industry in the developing countries is yet to exploit the state-of-the-art surface modification technologies to their full potential and ongoing R&D efforts in this area are also far short of what this important field demands. The present publication is a follow up of an 8-day International Training Course - cum - Business Opportunities Workshop jointly organised by the NAM S&T Centre and the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI) at Hyderabad, India during 19-26 July 2005. It comprises papers presented during this event and includes articles authored by some eminent scientists actively working in this field. The publication establishes a distinct relation of surface engineering advancement with industrial development and resultant economic gains and prosperity of the masses, and the information present herein is expected to catalyze the awareness on this subject in the minds of policy makers, technology managers and industries in the developing countries.

The combination of surface treatment and contact mechanics is an important one. The surface of a component is usually the most important engineering factor.
