Background: The Thuss lectureship began in 1978 and is carried at both Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Stanford Medical Center. The 2-day event consists of a resident and fellow workshop and dinner with an invited keynote speaker, followed by a didactic session and research presentation the following morning. This lecture honors the career of Dr Charles J. Thuss, Sr, and acts as a memorial for Dr Thuss, Jr, and his son, Carter. Trainee presentations have been catalogued since 2019, and we sought to identify the presentations that resulted in publications., Methods: Internal records from 2019 to 2022 were referenced to catalogue presenters and project titles. PubMed searches were conducted to identify projects from these presenters with direct links to their presentations at the lectureship series., Results: The event has been held consecutively from 1978 to 2023 with 44 keynote lecturers. Between 2019 and 2023, 17 residents, fellows, and medical students from Vanderbilt University Medical Center or/and the Tennessee Society of Plastic Surgery gave 19 research presentations for the Thuss lectureship at Vanderbilt. Due to the pandemic, no resident or trainee presentations were given in 2020. Nine of 11 project presentations resulted in publications, with presenters being the resultant first author of 6 of these articles., Conclusion: The Thuss lectureship at Vanderbilt serves as an academic conduit to share research and build camaraderie among plastic surgeons across Tennessee. Introduction: Research is a critical component of academic medicine that may or may not be prioritized in centers with high clinical volumes. The benefits of research expansion go beyond notoriety and industry partnerships, expanding into resident training and preparation of the next generation of physician-scientists. Improving a division or department's research portfolio requires a commitment to reorganizing structure, personnel, resources, and a dedication to innovative funding models. To improve research productivity and quality, our group placed several initiatives into motion beginning in August 2017 that we have outlined and evaluated in the present study. Some of these initiatives included restructuring leadership, resourcing both bench and clinical outcomes research, providing initial funding directly from clinical profits and rewarding research fiscally., Methods: Reviews of hiring records, publications, grant allocations, and interviews with key personnel were used to generate a road map of initiatives. Average impact factor was calculated by averaging journal impact factors for all publications from the department each year, excluding any publications with greater than 5 times the raw average, and creating a corrected average that more accurately represented the work. Student t tests were used to compare mean number of publications and impact factors from 2010 to 2017 to those from 2018 to 2022., Results: Prior to restructuring (2010-2017), the department published an average of 9 articles annually, which increased to an average of 42 articles since that time (P < 0.01). Average impact increased from 0 in 2010 to 4.02 in 2022, with the number of publications in top 10 plastic surgery journals following a similar trajectory with 1 publication in 2010 and 31 in 2023. Background: Unlike most health care sectors, patients can select an aesthetic surgery provider without considering insurance coverage. Patients therefore must be able to make informed choices regarding provider selection. Surgeon qualifications are part of the data patients evaluate in their decision making. To characterize the provider landscape that patients face, this study compares the certification requirements of various boards within the aesthetic marketplace., Methods: Four boards were identified for analysis based on a Google search of "board of plastic surgery": the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS), the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS), and the American Board of Facial Cosmetic Surgery (ABFCS). Information on certification requirements was obtained from each board's official website., Results: ABPS requires that diplomates complete an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited plastic surgery residency, pass a written and oral examination that includes a case collection, and meet continual standards to maintain certification. ABCS and ABFCS both require an American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) cosmetic surgery fellowship and passage of a written and oral examination. Neither board has case collection or continuing certification requirements. ABFPRS requires completion of either an ACGME-accredited otolaryngology or plastic surgery residency. Its examination process includes written and oral components as well as a case log. ABFPRS has enacted continuing certification requirements for diplomates credentialed in 2001 and later. ABPS is the only board that is a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)., Conclusions: ABPS stands apart as the only board within the aesthetic marketplace with rigorous standards for precertification training, demonstrating competency through examinations and case logs, and maintaining certification. Introduction: The Plastic Surgery Integrated track remains one of the most competitive fields in the National Residency Match Program. Match trends during the COVID-19 pandemic featured a distinct rise in regional and home program matches among plastic surgery applicants. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether these trends have continued into the most recent residency match cycle in 2024., Methods: Residency match data from 2019 to 2024 was gathered through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, Electronic Residency Application Service, integrated plastic surgery program websites, and plastic surgery residency program social media accounts. Current trends were compared with match cycles before and during the pandemic., Results: After COVID, the number of students matching at their home institution decreased to rates consistent with prepandemic norms. In the 2024 cycle, 46.9% of applicants matched at integrated plastic surgery programs within the geographical region of their medical school, which is similar to pre-COVID rates. Further, the emergence of a female-predominant plastic surgery match cohort during the pandemic has continued. In 2024, 125 (58.7%) of 213 matched applicants into integrated plastic surgery programs were female, which represents a continuation of female-majority resident cohorts since 2021. Our data showed that a sizable component of matched applicants completed visiting student electives at their matched institution. Finally, a large number of matched applicants completed a research fellowship, and a historically stable number completed research fellowships at their matched institution., Conclusion: Our group reports stabilization in plastic surgery match trends in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, along with the continuation of growth in the number of female plastic surgery residents. Objective: To undertake a United Kingdom national medical student survey investigating undergraduate plastic surgery exposure and specialty perceptions., Background: Plastic surgery incorporates all anatomical regions, age groups and tissue types; clinical challenges vary from trauma and burns to congenital defects and cancer and although around 50% of the workload is trauma, it is often misperceived to revolve around cosmetic surgery., Method: Following ethical approval, a national survey was conducted across 27 included UK medical schools (31/03/23-07/07/23). Trends were analysed, with comparisons made between surgical and non-surgical aspirants., Results: Data were included from 2513 students; 29.2% had surgical career aspirations. Students perceived plastic surgery as challenging, competitive, and impacting quality of life; however, most had no formal teaching (56.3%); merely 6.2% had clinical exposure and 30.4% had an undergraduate plastic surgery placement available. Breast reconstruction was the most frequently correctly identified surgery (91.8%), with head and neck cancer surgery the least (35.9%). Surgical aspirants were less likely to overestimate private practice (p < 0.001) but demonstrated greater self-confidence in plastic surgery understanding (p < 0.001) and their future ability to make plastic surgery referrals (p < 0.001), being more likely to pursue it (p < 0.001). Surgical aspirants were 17.3% more likely to obtain non-curricular plastic surgery experience (p < 0.001), and 5.6% more self-confident dressing basic wounds (p < 0.001)., Conclusion: A greater need for undergraduate plastic surgery teaching was determined. Significant heterogeneity across medical schools was identified. Objectives: Using Texas STAR (seeking transparency in application to residency), we aimed to 1) examine predictors of matching success in integrated plastic surgery residency programs and 2) assess the reliability of the tool., Design, Setting, and Participants: A retrospective analysis of self-reported nationwide data of plastic surgery residency applicants between 2021 and 2023 across 146 participating medical schools were included. A comparison analysis was performed between matched and unmatched applicants using chi-squared tests, t-tests, and logistic regression models. NRMP data and literature were referenced to determine reliability., Results: Of the 209 plastic surgery resident applications, 147 matched (70.3%) and 62 went unmatched (29.7%). Average United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 and 2 scores were 248 and 257, respectively. Between matched and unmatched cohorts, no significant differences were observed in Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) status, Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) status, mean number of research experiences/presentations, volunteer experiences, leadership positions, and programs applied. Significant predictors of matching included taking a research year (OR 2.07, CI 0.99-4.34, p= 0.052), 8+ peer-reviewed publications (OR 2.29, CI 1.22-4.30, p = 0.009), geographic connection (p = 0.02), and 13+ interviews attended (OR 2.94, CI 1.56 -5.51, p < 0.001). These findings are consistent with current literature and the NRMP. Upon analysis of the qualitative free text responses on general recommendations for prospective applicants by users, subinternships, connections, interviews, research, letter of recommendation quality, home advantage, and mentorship were prominent themes of advice provided by both matched and unmatched cohorts., Conclusions: Texas STAR is a resourceful and reliable tool. We conclude that a research year and geographic connections are strong predictors of matching in plastic surgery. However, more factors (e.g., applicants' home medical school, number of sub internships, and number of mentors) should be considered to make a well-informed decision on determining their own competitiveness, away rotations and residency programs., (Published by Elsevier Inc.)

Objective: The lack of diversity among applicants successfully matching into integrated plastic surgery residency continues to be a topic of significant discussion, yet substantial improvements in representation remain elusive. This article aims to highlight the systemic barriers contributing to the decline in diverse plastic surgery trainees., Design: This perspective summarizes current and existing challenges in improving recruitment efforts of underrepresented in medicine (URiM) trainees and those from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds., Conclusions: While acknowledging current DEI initiatives, the authors point out those underappreciated modifiable and nonmodifiable obstacles that perpetuate the lack of equity and inclusivity in the match process. Introduction: Plastic surgery residency programs leverage their websites as platforms for promoting their commitment to diversity and inclusion to potential candidates. Medical students who are seeking residency positions, including individuals from underrepresented backgrounds, place significant importance on the alignment of program culture and diversity. The authors assessed how these programs showcased diversity and inclusion efforts on their websites., Methods: The authors analyzed 89 plastic surgery integrated residency program websites for the presence of 12 elements, (1) nondiscrimination, (2) diversity and inclusion statement, (3) community resources, (4) extended resident biographies, (5) faculty biographies, (6) faculty photos, (7) resident photos, (8) additional financial resources for trainees, (9) wellness, (10) mental health resources, (11) health disparities/community engagement, and (12) presence of a diversity council. Additionally, we examined the presence of these 12 elements by geographic region (West, Midwest, South, and Northeast). Our analyzed use chi-squared, t-tests, and Mann-Whitney U; significance level was p = 0.005. The independent plastic surgery programs were excluded, considering their websites were combined with the integrated-residency programs., Results: We reviewed 89 websites from February 9, 2024 until February 24, 2024 and on average had 6.32 ± 1.1 diversity and inclusion elements. Resident photos (n = 84, 94.4%), community resources (n = 55, 61.8%), faculty photos (n = 63, 70.8%), and additional financial resources for trainees (n = 56, 62.9%) were the most common. The least common diversity and inclusion elements were diversity councils (n = 12, 13.5%), wellness resources (n = 36, 40.4%), and diversity and inclusion statements (n = 42, 47.2%). The primary analysis revealed that programs with higher number of incoming positions (3 or more) (5.2 ± 1.8) had a significantly higher diversity and inclusion scores when compared to programs with lower number of incoming positions (3.6 ± 2.1) (p = 0.002). Furthermore, based on the geographic regions from the U.S. Census, there was no significant difference between geographic regions., Conclusions: Characterizing the number of program websites and quantifying the number of diversity elements on each site provide an opportunity for more residency programs to further commit to diversity and inclusion. Background: Contemporary medical education devotes little time to plastic surgery topics. This deficiency is potentially greater at institutions without a dedicated plastic surgery training program. Lack of exposure to plastic surgery results in many medical students developing limited awareness to the full scope of the field. As a result, these future physicians may be unaware of many conditions treated by the plastic surgeon, resulting in referrals being diverted to alternative specialist and furthering scope of practice creep. This study aims to assess medical students' exposure to plastic surgery and evaluate institutional-based differences in plastic surgery education by comparing medical schools with and without a plastic surgery training program., Methods: Surveys were distributed to medical students at 2 institutions in the same United States city: 1 with a plastic surgery training program (TP) and 1 with no training program (NTP). Surveys assessed students' clinical experiences, exposure to plastic surgery, and understanding of the scope of plastic surgery., Results: The response rate was 24.3% (306 of 1261). Many students reported having "little" or "no" exposure to plastic surgery during preclinical (93.5%) and clinical (77.7%) phases. NTP students were more likely to report "no" exposure to plastic surgery during both the preclinical ( P = 0.0145) and clinical ( P = 0.045) years. Consequently, approximately half of all students felt uncomfortable knowing when to refer a patient (46.1%) or place an inpatient consult (51.1%) to a plastic surgeon.When presented with clinical scenarios, plastic surgery was selected by only 53.4% of students. Performance between institutions was similar (53.0% TP vs 53.5% NTP, P = 0.936), with greater accuracy on cosmetic vignettes compared with hand and peripheral nerve vignettes. There was a statistically significant difference in 4 subspecialty domains between students who had prior exposure to plastic surgery and those who did not (hand/peripheral nerve, P < 0.0001; craniofacial, P = 0.007; breast/cosmetic, P = 0.001; and reconstruction/burn, P < 0.0001)., Conclusions: These findings add to the growing body of literature demonstrating that medical students have limited exposure to plastic surgery. Although limited in its scope, this study suggests that home TP status does not appear to overtly impact students' understanding. Introduction: Resident performance on the Plastic Surgery In-Service Examination (PSITE) is used as a predictor of success on the American Board of Plastic Surgery Written Examination, as well as resident progression and fellowship applications. However, information specifically addressing strategies on optimal PSITE preparation is lacking in the plastic surgery literature when compared to general surgery. For this reason, we aim to understand if the topic is well-studied and denote effective study strategies and curricular interventions in both fields that can help residents and programs optimize PSITE performance., Methods: A literature search including studies from 2012 to 2022 was conducted following PRISMA guidelines in PubMed and EMBASE to identify articles on strategies to improve in-service exam scores for general surgery and plastic surgery. Only studies that reported measurable outcomes in raw score, percentile score, or percent correct were included., Results: Qualitative analysis of 30 articles revealed 2 categories of interventions: individual study habits and institutional curricular interventions. In general surgery literature, 27 articles examined interventions positively impacting resident ABSITE scores, with 21 studies classified as institutional curricular interventions and 6 articles addressing individual study habits. Themes associated with improved ABSITE performance included mandatory remediation programs, dedicated study time, and problem-based learning interventions. In contrast, only 3 articles in plastic surgery literature discussed interventions associated with improved PSITE scores, all falling under curricular interventions., Conclusion: Unfortunately, the plastic surgery literature lacks concrete evidence on how residents can improve performance. Future research in plastic surgery should replicate successful strategies from general surgery and further investigate optimal preparation strategies for the PSITE. Abstract: Absenteeism among clinical patients is a significant source of inefficiency in the modern American health care system. Routine absenteeism limits access to care for indigent patients, thus providing additional strain on the health care system and timely administration of care.This quality improvement project set out to quantify, understand, and potentially reduce patient absenteeism in our weekly plastic and reconstructive surgery resident indigent care clinic. One year prior to our study was retrospectively reviewed to determine a baseline rate of absenteeism (no shows). The daily and monthly no-show percentages were calculated. Then, three consecutive 2-month Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) cycles were performed and data were recorded.The initial year analysis demonstrated an average no-show rate of 25%. The first PDSA cycle attempted to ascertain factors contributing to absenteeism and to get patients rescheduled. The rate of clinical absenteeism was 27% over this period compared with a rate of 18% in the control period. During this period, we discovered a limitation of our institution's electronic medical record (EMR). Rescheduled patients were removed from the original schedule and were not counted as a missed appointment even though the opportunity for care was missed. The second PDSA cycle attempted to collect raw data while trying to understand the EMR error and rescheduling process. During this period, there was a 33% no-show rate compared with 27% in the control period. The third PDSA cycle attempted again to establish factors contributing to clinical absenteeism with a better understanding of the limitations of our EMR. A 33% no-show rate during this cycle was recorded compared with 22% in the control period. After three PDSA cycles were completed, our clinic had an average no-show rate of 31% compared with 25% during the same months in the previous year.This project brought to realization that our data were initially skewed by our ignorance of an EMR flaw that did not track patients who either canceled or rescheduled their appointments. Abstract: No specialty has such close relationship with art as plastic surgery among medicine. Both are intensely creative processes that combine technology with utmost dexterity and now are undervalued in the medical education. Art is a reservoir that provides a surgeon with creativity and improved dexterity. It is beneficial for the surgeons to practice drawing, for it can bring passion and inspiration, enhance observation and imagination, improve dexterity and accuracy, and help keep a good relation with patients. Background: Increasing the diversity of plastic surgery trainees is an important step in providing optimal care for our increasingly diverse patient populations. Given that information presented on residency programs' websites can strongly influence applicants' decisions to apply to or rank a program, demonstrating a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) on program websites may aid in recruiting applicants with URM background., Methods: Using 8 DEI-related criteria, we evaluated the websites of 103 plastic surgery residency programs for the presence of DEI-related content during the month of June 2022. Each program was evaluated by 2 individual graders. We analyzed the data with confirmatory factor analysis in R using the Lavaan package., Results: On average, programs fulfilled 2.1 ± 1.6 of the metrics with a range of 0-7 fulfilled per program. Our model revealed that the criteria were a high-quality (P < 0.0001) measure of DEI-related metrics. There was a significant association between program size and presence of DEI-related criteria (linear 0.039; quadratic -0.005; both P < 0.01), such that mid-sized programs (16-18 residents) had the highest quality of DEI advertising compared to both small and large programs. Programs associated with a USNWR Top 20 Hospital were less likely to achieve high level of DEI-related criteria than other programs (P < 0.0001)., Conclusion: Mid-sized programs had greater DEI quality on their websites, while smaller and larger programs similarly had poorer assessed quality. Importance: The lack of underrepresented in medicine physicians in academic plastic surgery has been a topic of interest for many years, and accordingly outreach has been undertaken to address the pipeline from medical school to residency and beyond., Objective: This study aims to assess and identify the characteristics associated with plastic surgery match success for underrepresented in medicine applicants., Design: Residency application data for first time, US allopathic medical school seniors from the 2017-2018 to 2021-2022 applicant cycles were abstracted from Electronic Residency Application Service applications, and match results were determined using the National Residency Matching Program database and online public sources. Data included self-reported race, and multiple application characteristics. Multivariable logistic regression of application characteristics were used to assess the relationship between underrepresented in medicine status and successfully matching. Binary logistic regression was used in subgroup analyses of each application characteristic, and interactions regression was used to evaluate the relative weight of each characteristic on successfully matching., Results: Underrepresented in medicine applicants were 57% less likely to match than non-underrepresented in medicine applicants (OR 0.43, p = 0.001), though they were 60% less likely to match (OR adj 0.4, p = 0.216) when adjusted. Subgroup analysis revealed that odds of matching as an underrepresented in medicine applicant were significantly increased if the applicant had a home program, took a research year, and had an increased number of published research and presentations (ORs 0.43-0.48, all p < 0.05). Odds of matching as an underrepresented in medicine applicant were significantly decreased if the applicant went to a medical school ranked in the highest or lowest third (ORs 0.41-0.42, all p < 0.01); however, on interaction regression the odds of matching from a highly ranked medical school was increased (OR 3.5, 95% CI 0.98-12.55, p = 0.05)., Conclusions: The likelihood of matching as an underrepresented in medicine applicant is lower than the rest of the applicant population, and there are no individual applicant characteristics that can increase these odds to equal that of the general applicant population., (Copyright © 2024 Association of Program Directors in Surgery. Introduction: The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into cosmetic medicine promises to revolutionize the field by enhancing diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient care., Objective: This manuscript explores the current adoption and perceptions of AI among professionals in the realm of cosmetic dermatology and plastic surgery, utilizing insights from the IMCAS Congress 2024 attendees., Methods: A survey employing a digital questionnaire with 14 questions was distributed among attendees of the IMCAS Congress 2024 to evaluate their familiarity with AI, usage in clinical practice, perceived advantages, and concerns regarding data privacy and security., Results: The survey revealed that a majority of respondents are familiar with AI's potential in cosmetic medicine, yet there is a notable discrepancy between awareness and actual application in practice. Concerns over data privacy and a pronounced need for further training were also highlighted., Conclusion: Despite recognizing AI's benefits in cosmetic medicine, significant barriers such as data privacy concerns and the need for more comprehensive training resources must be addressed. Background: Video-assisted debriefing (VAD) combined with the advocacy and inquiry (A&I) technique is a tool that allows video playback of selected segments of a simulation, thereby helping the debriefers structure the session. However, no consensus exists on how to optimally perform a team debriefing. The authors demonstrate and describe the methodology of A&I debriefing in an instructional simulated blast scenario and assess the impact of VAD on residents' technical and nontechnical skills., Methods: After institutional review board approval, the authors performed a study with 50 residents who were randomly assigned to 2 groups. Group 1 (control, or no VAD; n = 25) consisted of residents who received oral debriefing by 1 independent faculty member without the recorded video of the simulation. Group 2 (intervention, or VAD; n = 25) consisted of residents who received VAD from the second independent faculty member. These residents repeated the same simulation scenario 1 week after their debrief. Introduction: Becoming a craniofacial/pediatric plastic surgeon depends on completing a plastic surgery (PS) residency. As medical school curricula for PS exposure are highly inconsistent, the authors investigated whether there was an association between the presence of PS elective rotations and/or home programs in medical schools with the proportion of students matriculating into integrated PS residency., Methods: A list of 198 medical schools was compiled from the Association for American Medical Colleges and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine. Plastic surgery residency programs were identified by the American Society of Plastic Surgery and the American Council of Educators in Plastic Surgery. Plastic surgery elective rotation offerings and recent matches (2021-2022) were obtained from school websites. Mean proportions of students matriculating into PS between schools that did versus did not have PS elective rotations and/or home PS residency programs were compared., Results: One hundred fifty-nine medical schools were included. Seventy-seven of 159 (48%) had both PS elective rotations and home program(s), 63/159 (40%) offered PS elective rotations only, and 19/159 (12%) had neither. Background: Despite growing demand for gender-affirming surgery (GAS), there are few formal GAS fellowships in the United States. Paucity of online information about GAS fellowships may discourage potential applicants and decrease the visibility of the field. Thus, it is important to analyze the existing online information about GAS fellowships to improve fellow recruitment and patient outcomes., Objective: To identify the number of GAS fellowship websites (GASFWs) and evaluate their robustness. Second, to report the social media presence of GAS fellowships., Methods: To identify GASFWs, existing databases sponsored by plastic surgery associations and Google query were used between April and May 2023. Thirty-five independent variables based on previously published data were evaluated for presence in a bivariate fashion on GASFWs. Accounts on popular social media websites were also identified by Google query. Website and social media analysis were also done for GAS fellowships that were offered by departments/specialties other than plastic surgery., Results: In total, only 6 GASFWs associated with plastic surgery departments were identified and analyzed. Eight nonplastic surgery GASFWs were included for analysis. Overall, both categories of GASFWs were not robust; key information such as previous fellow listing and selection criteria was often missing. Furthermore, important topics specifically related to GAS such as community engagement and programmatic building are often not found on GASFWs either. In addition, none of the fellowships had any independent Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter., Conclusions: To ensure patient safety and quality outcomes, it is important to promote GAS by recruiting more applicants for specialized training beyond residency. In the 1960s, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand embarked on an endeavor to improve and standardize the educational experience in hand surgery. By the 1980s, numerous programs existed across the country with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education formally recognizing orthopedic surgery-based fellowships in 1985 and plastic surgery-based fellowships in 1986. In order to sit for what was then termed the Certificate of Additional Qualification examination, applicants had to demonstrate performance of a specific number of procedures while in practice. Borrowing from this theme, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education began to analyze programs according to the relative proportion of cases done by fellows at individual institutions compared to national trends. Beginning in 2019 and working collaboratively with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the Hand Fellowship Director's Association has since modified the methods by which programs are evaluated, pivoting away from comparative percentages to the establishment of case minimums. Introduction: Surgery represents a major source of carbon emissions, with numerous initiatives promoting more sustainable practices. Healthcare innovation and the development of a digitally capable workforce are fundamental in leveraging technologies to tackle challenges, including sustainability in surgery., Methods: A surgical hackathon was organised with three major themes: (1) how to make surgery greener, (2) the future of plastic surgery in 10 years, and (3) improving healthcare outcomes using machine learning. Lectures were given on sustainability and innovation using the problem, innovation, market size, strategy and team (PIMST) framework to support their presentations, as well as technological support to translate ideas into simulations or minimum viable products. Pre- and post-event questionnaires were circulated to participants., Results: Most attendees were medical students (65%), although doctors and engineers were also present. There was a significant increase in delegates' confidence in approaching innovation in surgery (+20%, p < 0.001). Reducing waste packaging (70%), promoting recyclable material usage (56%) and the social media dimension of public perceptions towards plastic surgery (40%) were reported as the most important issues arising from the hackathon. The top three prizes went to initiatives promoting an artificial intelligence-enhanced operative pathway, instrument sterilisation and an educational platform to teach students research and innovation skills., Conclusions: Surgical hackathons can result in significant improvements in confidence in approaching innovation, as well as raising awareness of important healthcare challenges. Future innovation events may build on this to continue to empower the future workforce to leverage technologies to tackle healthcare challenges such as sustainability.

Background:  Microsurgery requires complex skill development with a steep learning curve for plastic surgery trainees. Flap dissection courses and simulation exercises are useful to acquire these skills. This study aims to assess plastic surgery training programs' access to and interest in microsurgical courses., Methods:  A survey was distributed to plastic surgery residency and microsurgery fellowship program directors (PDs). The survey collected program demographics and attendance of trainees at structured microsurgical skills or flap dissection courses. We assessed if PDs thought trainees would benefit from instructional courses., Results:  There were 44 residency PD responses (44/105, 41.9%, 36 integrated, 8 independent), and 16 fellowship PD responses (16/42, 38.1%). For residency PDs, 54.5% (24/44) sent residents to flap courses, and 95% (19/20) of remaining PDs felt residents would benefit from attending. In addition, 59.1% of programs (26/44) sent residents to microsurgical skills courses, and 83.3% (15/18) of remaining PDs felt residents would benefit from attending. When examining fellowship PDs, 31.2% of programs (5/16) sent fellows to flap dissection courses and 10/11 of remaining PDs felt fellows would benefit from attending a course (90.1%). Half of programs (8/16) sent fellows to microsurgical skills courses, and 7/8 remaining PDs felt fellows would benefit from attending (87.5%)., Conclusion:  Only half of the plastic surgery trainees have access to microsurgical skills and flap dissection courses. Introduction: COVID-19 generated a system-wide shock causing an unbalanced equilibrium between producing adequately trained physicians and meeting extraordinary operational needs. Previous studies report the experience of surgical residents during COVID-19 at a regional level. This study measures the learning losses related with the redeployment of highly specialized medical professionals to the care of COVID-19 patients, while we systematically investigate proposed remedial strategies., Methods: We administered an online cross-sectional survey in 67 countries capturing training inputs (i.e., surgeries and seminars residents participated in) before and during the pandemic and retrieved residents' expected learning outputs, career prospects and recommended remedial measures for learning losses. We compared responses of residents working in (treatment group) and out (control group) of hospitals with COVID-19 patients., Results: The analysis included 432 plastic surgery residents who were in training during the pandemic. Most of the learning losses were found in COVID-19 hospitals with 37% and 16% loss of surgeries and seminars, respectively, per week. Moreover, 74%, 44%, and 55% of residents expected their surgical skill, scientific knowledge, and overall competence, respectively, to be lower than those of residents who graduated before COVID. Residents in COVID-19 hospitals reported participating in significantly (P < 0.001) fewer surgeries and having significantly (P < 0.001) lower surgical skill relative to those not in COVID-19 hospitals., Conclusions: The perceived lower competence and the fall-off in surgical skill and scientific knowledge among future surgeons suggest that health-care systems globally may have limited capacity to perform specialized and costly procedures in the future., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Inc. Introduction: On most online platforms, just about anyone can disseminate plastic surgery (PS) content regardless of their educational or professional background. This study examines the general public's perceptions of the accuracy of online PS content and the factors that contribute to the discernment of credible information., Methods: The Amazon Mechanical Turk crowdsourcing platform was used to survey adults in the United States. The survey assessed respondent demographics, health literacy (HL), and perceptions of online PS content accuracy. T-tests, Chi-square tests, and post hoc analyses with Bonferroni corrections assessed differences between HL groups. Multivariate linear regressions assessed associations between sociodemographic variables and perceptions of online content., Results: In total, 428 (92.0%) of 465 complete responses were analyzed. The median age of respondents was 32 y (interquartile range: 29-40). Online sources were predominantly perceived to have a high degree of accuracy, with mean scores of various platforms ranging from 3.8 to 4.5 (1 = not accurate at all; 5 = extremely accurate). The low HL group perceived social media sites and review sites to be more accurate than the high HL respondents, particularly for Reddit (P = 0.004), Pinterest (P = 0.040), and Snapchat (P = 0.002)., Conclusions: There is a concerning relationship between low HL and the perceptions of the accuracy of online PS sources. This study underscores the need for education campaigns, the development of trustworthy online resources, and initiatives to improve HL. Background:  Recent advancements in supermicrosurgery and promising preliminary outcomes have led to a surge in physiologic lymphedema surgery. This study is the first to evaluate lymphedema surgical education among U.S. plastic surgery residency programs, along with the background and experience of plastic surgeons subspecializing in the field., Methods:  Cross-sectional evaluation of 103 accredited U.S. plastic surgery residency programs was performed in January 2023. Web-based searches of program curricula, faculty profiles, and main institutional pages indicated whether a program provided nonclinical or clinical exposure to lymphedema surgery. Review of online faculty profiles, surname searches, Doximity, and Scopus determined the perceived demographics, academic productivity, and procedures performed by lymphedema surgeons., Results:  Compared with the 11 programs that incorporated lymphedema surgery into their online curriculum, 67 programs had a rotation site with a surgeon performing lymphedema procedures. Of the 33 programs without evidence of clinical exposure, 76% ( n = 25 ) did not provide or specify providing elective time. Faculty perceived to be female or a race underrepresented in plastic surgery had significantly more assistant professor titles ( p  < 0.0214) and significantly fewer years of experience ( p  < 0.0293) than their counterparts., Conclusion:  Great variation in lymphedema surgical education exists among U.S. plastic surgery residency programs. Background: Medical students who attend institutions without plastic surgery residency programs are at a disadvantage in the plastic surgery match. We developed an educational program for medical students without home programs called Explore Plastic Surgery to provide an overview of the steps toward a career in plastic surgery. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact, utility, and success of the novel program., Methods: Pre- and postevent surveys were distributed to participants. Survey data were analyzed including participant demographics, perceptions of barriers unique to those without home programs, and the overall event utility., Results: Two hundred seventeen students registered for the program. Ninety-five participants completed the pre-event survey (44%), and of those, 57 participants completed the post-event survey (60%). There was an increase in understanding of the steps toward a career in plastic surgery ( P < 0.001), confidence in overcoming barriers ( P = 0.005), and level of comfort in reaching out to faculty for opportunities ( P = 0.01). There was a decrease in the perceived negative impact that attending medical schools without a home program will have on their abilities to pursue careers in plastic surgery ( P = 0.006)., Conclusions: After the event, participants demonstrated an increase in their confidence in overcoming barriers and a decrease in their perceptions that attending an institution without a home program would negatively impact their ability to pursue plastic surgery. Introduction: Integrated plastic surgery residency is one of the most competitive medical specialties. Although previous studies have surveyed integrated plastic surgery residency program directors regarding desired applicant characteristics, there is a paucity of literature assessing detailed application characteristics and reported match outcomes from applicants in recent application cycles. This study examines application characteristics associated with matching into integrated plastic surgery residency from 2017 to 2023., Methods: The authors accessed the Texas Seeking Transparency in Application to Residency database, which contains survey information from graduating medical students nationwide regarding residency application characteristics and specialties/programs to which applications were submitted. Characteristics of matched versus unmatched applicants between 2017 and 2023 were compared using χ 2 and 2-sided, independent t tests. Univariate logistic regression models were used to assess predictors of a successful match., Results: A total of 381 integrated plastic surgery residency applicants responded to the Texas Seeking Transparency in Application to Residency survey from 2017 to 2023. Mean United States Medical Licensing Exam Step 2 CK scores; the number of away rotations, interview offers, and honored clerkships; and Alpha Omega Alpha membership rate were significantly associated with and predictive of matching. Preference signaling of programs was associated with an increased interview offer rate., Conclusions: Higher board examination scores, increasing numbers of honored clerkships, away rotations, and Alpha Omega Alpha membership were identified as statistically significant predictors of matching into integrated plastic surgery residency. Background:  Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR)-termed mixed reality-have shown promise in the care of operative patients. Currently, AR and VR have well-known applications for craniofacial surgery, specifically in preoperative planning. However, the application of AR/VR technology to other reconstructive challenges has not been widely adopted. Thus, the purpose of this investigation is to outline the current applications of AR and VR in the operative setting., Methods:  The literature pertaining to the use of AR/VR technology in the operative setting was examined. Emphasis was placed on the use of mixed reality technology in surgical subspecialities, including plastic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, colorectal surgery, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, and orthopaedic surgery., Results:  Presently, mixed reality is widely used in the care of patients requiring complex reconstruction of the craniomaxillofacial skeleton for pre- and intraoperative planning. For upper extremity amputees, there is evidence that VR may be efficacious in the treatment of phantom limb pain. Furthermore, VR has untapped potential as a cost-effective tool for microsurgical education and for training residents on techniques in surgical and nonsurgical aesthetic treatment. There is utility for mixed reality in breast reconstruction for preoperative planning, mapping perforators, and decreasing operative time. VR has well- documented applications in the planning of deep inferior epigastric perforator flaps by creating three-dimensional immersive simulations based on a patient's preoperative computed tomography angiogram., Conclusion:  The benefits of AR and VR are numerous for both patients and surgeons. VR has been shown to increase surgical precision and decrease operative time. Furthermore, it is effective for patient-specific rehearsal which uses the patient's exact anatomical data to rehearse the procedure before performing it on the actual patient. Plastic surgery residency programs are offering increasing opportunities for international rotations, recognizing the importance of early exposure and the need to promote better capacity building in host countries. While a greater number of residency programs are offering international opportunities, it is not clear whether applicants are aware of these opportunities based on program websites. The purpose of this study was to determine the availability and ease of access to international rotation information on plastic surgery residency websites. All 101 integrated and independent program websites were visited and assessed for information on international rotations. Programs were noted for any information about rotations and ease of access was determined based on the location of information on the website (homepage, 1 or 2 clicks from homepage, and greater than 2 clicks). Approximately 33% of programs offered any information on international rotations on their program websites. Thirty-six percent of these program websites displayed information on their homepage ("Easy"); 30% of these programs displayed their information 1 or 2 clicks away from the homepage ("Moderate"); and 33% of these programs displayed their information greater than 2 clicks away from the homepage ("Difficult"). Previous studies have established that international rotations are widely available to plastic surgery residents, but this study revealed that only a minority of residency programs are advertising this opportunity on their websites. Background:  While the number of female plastic surgeons has continued to increase over time, plastic surgery has historically been a male-dominated profession with only 15% of practicing plastic surgeons being female. Microsurgery, as a subspecialty, has been long perceived as an even more male-centric career path. The objective of this study was to determine the representation of females in the subspecialty field of microsurgery and the impact of microsurgical fellowship training., Methods:  A review of all microsurgery fellowship programs participating in the microsurgery fellowship match from 2010 to 2019 were analyzed. Fellows were identified through fellowship Web site pages or direct contact with fellowship program coordinators and directors. The current type of practice and performance of microsurgery were also identified through a Web search and direct contact with fellowship program coordinators and directors., Results:  A total of 21 programs and 317 fellows over a 10-year period were analyzed. Over this 10-year period, there was a total of 100 (31.5%) female microsurgery fellows and 217 (68.5%) male microsurgery fellows. There was a small, statistically insignificant increase in the yearly percentage of female microsurgery fellows over this 10-year period with an average yearly increase of 2.7% ( p  = 0.60; 95% confidence interval: -6.9 to 13.2%). There were significantly fewer females who continued to practice microsurgery compared to males (75 [75.0%] vs. 186 [85.7%], p  = 0.02). There was no significant difference in the current practice types (academic, private, and nonacademic hospital) between females and males ( p  = 0.29)., Conclusion:  Women are underrepresented in the field of microsurgery to a similar extent as they are underrepresented in overall plastic surgery. There is a need for a specialist pathway or progression in esthetic medicine for esthetic physicians. A structured program for specialized training in nonsurgical facial esthetics to empower physicians is the need of the hour. The pharmaceutical companies currently provide training sessions, taking considerable initiatives to train esthetic professionals. "Leaders of the future" is a global thought leadership program by the Allergan Aesthetics. The program was designed to support and nurture the next generation of leaders by focusing on science and evidence. It aimed to help practitioners grow, evolve, learn, share, and connect with leading international experts. The sessions were focused on the importance of science and sensibility in esthetic medicine, as well as critical thinking and leadership skills. Mentorship is one of the most effective approaches for transforming the lives of young esthetic practitioners and, in turn, future patients. In addition, the importance of in-depth knowledge of injection anatomy for safe practice was emphasized. As esthetic surgeons and physicians, we must commit to incorporating evidence-based medicine into our life-long practice. Objectives: Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are emerging technologies with wide potential applications in health care. We performed a scoping review of the current literature on the application of augmented and VR in the field of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery (FPRS)., Data Sources: PubMed and Web of Science., Review Methods: According to PRISMA guidelines, PubMed and Web of Science were used to perform a scoping review of literature regarding the utilization of AR and/or VR relevant to FPRS., Results: Fifty-eight articles spanning 1997-2023 met the criteria for review. Five overarching categories of AR and/or VR applications were identified across the articles: preoperative, intraoperative, training/education, feasibility, and technical. The following clinical areas were identified: burn, craniomaxillofacial surgery (CMF), face transplant, face lift, facial analysis, facial palsy, free flaps, head and neck surgery, injectables, locoregional flaps, mandible reconstruction, mandibuloplasty, microtia, skin cancer, oculoplastic surgery, rhinology, rhinoplasty, and trauma., Conclusion: AR and VR have broad applications in FPRS. AR for surgical navigation may have the most emerging potential in CMF surgery and free flap harvest. VR is useful as distraction analgesia for patients and as an immersive training tool for surgeons. Federal government research grants provide limited funding to plastic surgeon-scientists, with reconstructive research taking precedence over aesthetic research. The Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF) is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization that seeks to support innovative, diverse research endeavors within aesthetic surgery. A total of 130 ASERF-funded studies and 32 non-funded applications from 1992 to 2022 were reviewed. Kruskal Wallis, Fisher's exact, and chi-squared tests were utilized to assess the potential relationship between self-identified gender, practice setting, geographical location, and study type with individual grant amounts and grant funding decision. Although significant differences were observed between male and female grant recipient h-indices (P < .05), there were no differences in the amount of funding they received (P > .05). Grant amounts were also consistent between study types as well as principal investigator practice settings and geographical locations (P > .05). The subanalysis revealed that the practice setting of the primary investigator (PI) was the only variable to exhibit a significant association with the decision to award funding (P < .05). Further, of the 61 applicants between 2017 and 2022, only 2 PIs self-identified as female. ASERF serves as an excellent funding source for global aesthetic surgery. Background: Studies suggest an increasing trend of plastic surgeons choosing private practice after training, with up to 90% pursuing private practice without future fellowships.1 Previous data showed that 66.7% of graduates from plastic surgery residency programs chose to pursue private practice without future fellowship, while more recent studies estimate this statistic has risen close to 90%.1,2 The literature has yet to characterize the current plastic surgery workforce and changes in its composition over time. This study aims to analyze the characteristics and training of plastic surgeons in California through a comparative study with general surgeons., Methods: Surgeon demographics were extracted from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services open database. Urban/rural classification and academic affiliation were crosslinked from the Inpatient Prospective System database and sole proprietorship status was cross-linked from the NPI Registry. Summary statistics and logistic regressions with chi-squared analysis were analyzed using STATA/MP17., Results: Our analysis consisted of 3871 plastic and general surgeons in California. Compared to general surgeons, plastic surgeons were less likely to be females (P < 0.000), and more likely to be sole proprietors (P < 0.000), and affiliated with a teaching hospital (P < 0.005). There was no statistically significant difference in the percentage of rural-practicing plastic and general surgeons (P = 0.590). More recent plastic surgery graduates were more likely to be affiliated with an academic hospital (P < 0.0000). The composition of females significantly increased from the older graduated cohort to the most recent one. There was no significant difference in sole proprietorship and rural practice status between the oldest and youngest graduating cohorts., Conclusions: Although the California plastic surgery workforce is gaining female plastic surgeons and shifting to academic institutions, significant progress in serving rural communities is yet to be made. Our study suggests that there may be a shift in the trend of plastic surgeons opting for private practice, possibly driven by a desire for more stable positions in academia. Backgrounds: The rapid advancement of generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems, such as Midjourney, has paved the way for their use in medical training, producing computer-generated images. However, despite clear disclosures stating that these images are not intended for medical consultations, their accuracy and realism are yet to be thoroughly examined., Methods: A series of requests were addressed to the Midjourney AI tool, a renowned generative artificial intelligence application, with a focus on depicting appropriate systemic anatomy and representing aesthetic surgery operations. Subsequently, a blinded panel of four experts, with years of experience in anatomy and aesthetic surgery, assessed the images based on three parameters: accuracy, anatomical correctness, and visual impact. Each parameter was scored on a scale of 1-5., Results: All of images produced by Midjourney exhibited significant inaccuracies and lacked correct anatomical representation. While they displayed high visual impact, their unsuitability for medical training and scientific publications became evident., Conclusions: The implications of these findings are multifaceted. Primarily, the images' inaccuracies render them ineffective for training, leading to potential misconceptions. Additionally, their lack of anatomical correctness limits their applicability in scientific articles. Although the study focuses on a single AI tool, it underscores the need for collaboration between AI developers and medical professionals. Background:  Microsurgery is essential in modern reconstructive surgery and plastic surgery training. Surgeon's proficiency and experience are crucial for effective microsurgical interventions. Despite anecdotal evidence of varying quality of microsurgery training globally, no empirical studies have investigated this. We conducted a global survey to investigate microsurgical training and clinical case exposure among plastic surgery trainees worldwide., Methods:  An online survey was conducted using a secure platform to gather information on microsurgical case exposure and training among plastic surgery trainees between August 2020 and April 2021. Participants provided consent and completed a 37-question survey across four themes: clinical caseload, surgical exposure to microsurgery, microsurgical simulation training exposure, and barriers and opportunities., Results:  A total of 202 responses were received, with most respondents in formal training programs (86.7%). The data highlighted regional variation in microsurgery case indications and flap types, with North America and Europe exhibiting the highest activity levels in microsurgery. Trainees in Asia have the highest cumulative practical exposure in microsurgery, followed by Australia and Oceania, and North America. Only 39.6% of respondents reported formal microsurgical simulation training, and almost one-third (29.7%) received no simulation training. Trainee access to practical experience is limited by several factors, including insufficient time and procedure complexity. Notably, practical experience was most commonly denied without reason being given., Conclusion:  Our study highlights significant disparities in microsurgical training and exposure among plastic surgery trainees globally. Background: Plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) is recognized as a highly competitive specialty. Since the first assessment of resident selection criteria in 2007, PRS residency programs have adopted holistic review processes and adapted to changes such as a decline in medical schools participating in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society as well as the recent transition to pass/fail grading for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) step 1 examination (Schultz et al. Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open . 2020;8:e2892; Tadisina et al. Plast Reconstr Surg . 2017;139:330e-331e). This study was devised to evaluate current PRS residency criteria in light of these changes., Methods: An anonymous, 12-item, electronic survey was generated and distributed using Alchemer. An email was sent to 171 program directors (PDs) and associate program directors (APDs) of PRS residency programs. Survey questions were developed to collect data regarding respondent demographics and their desired criteria when assessing residency applicants. Complete responses were collected and analyzed with summary statistics and multivariate logistic regression using RStudio (version 1.3.109)., Results: In total, 44 (25.7% response rate) of the 171 PDs and APDs completed the survey. Of the 16 programs (36.4%) with a USMLE cutoff score, 7 (43.8%) reported a range of 230 to 239 and 6 (37.5%) reported a range of 240 to 249. Without a score for step 1, the majority (48.8%) of respondents believe that step 2 scores will replace step 1 scores in terms of assessment criteria, and the content of recommendation letters was selected as the criterion with the greatest increase in weight (66.7%). In addition, 27.3% of programs require a step 2 score at the time of interview. The top 3 academic criteria in order of decreasing importance were the content of recommendation letters, clinical grades, and letter writers, whereas the top 3 nonacademic criteria were subinternship performance, maturity, and interview performance., Conclusions: Plastic and reconstructive surgery remains a highly competitive specialty for residency applicants. Our findings suggest that Alpha Omega Alpha membership remains diminished in importance, whereas USMLE cutoff scores have increased. Background: The integrated plastic surgery residency match continues to be highly competitive. Every year, some candidates are former NCAA athletes. While it is challenging to balance academic and athletic responsibilities, participation in NCAA sports may be predictive of continued success., Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of participation in collegiate athletics on applicant anticipated rank and academic success., Methods: All applications received from 2017 to 2020 at a single institution were reviewed for participation in NCAA athletics (Division I-III). Our primary outcome of interest was applicant anticipated rank by letter of reference writers. Applications were also examined for demographic information, membership in AOA, number of research publications, and USMLE board certification examination scores., Results: After reviewing 885 applications, 61 applicants (6.89%) were former NCAA athletes. Former NCAA involvement was associated with the highest effect on anticipated ranking (- 0.22, p=0.001). Former NCAA involvement demonstrated the highest odds of receiving an anticipated ranking in the top 5 (OR 1.83, p=0.025). We found no significant difference in research productivity between the two groups, including first authorships or USMLE Step 1 board certification exam scores. A significant difference was seen in race distribution, with forty-five (80.4%) of athlete applicants identifying as Caucasian, while 430 (56.5%) of non-athletes identified as Caucasian (p=0.012)., Conclusion: Former athletes applying to become integrated plastic surgery residents overcome the challenges of balancing athletic and academic pursuits with a higher anticipated rank in the integrated plastic surgery match while having comparable academic achievement. Former collegiate athletes have demonstrated greater success in and after residency. Former NCAA participation demonstrated the highest odds of receiving a top-5 rank. Background: Absence of published literature on facial plastic and reconstructive surgery (FPRS) fellows' pursuit of academic careers hampers informed decision making for those interested in the specialty, fellowship program directors, and leaders in the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Objective: To examine career choices among FPRS fellows from 2000 to 2019 and identify factors linked to academic or private practice employment after fellowship. Methods: Data from 796 fellows were analyzed, including gender, medical school, residency program, fellowship program, fellowship year, and degrees, to categorize them based on academic or nonacademic career placement. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to explore the association between demographic factors and academic career placement. Results: Forty-three percent ( n  = 345) obtained academic positions, with significant associations found between academic placement and additional advanced degrees, completion of fellowship training in the northeast, and residency training at an institution offering FPRS fellowship. Conclusion: Although fellows in FPRS predominantly pursue private practice, the decision to pursue academia is influenced by complex and multifactorial factors among graduates in the field.

Objective: Rooted in economics market strategies, preference signaling was introduced to the Plastic Surgery Common Application (PSCA) in 2022 for integrated plastic surgery residency applicants. This study surveyed program and applicant experience with preference signaling and assessed how preference signals influenced likelihood of interview invitations., Design: Two online surveys were designed and distributed to all program directors and 2022-2023 applicants to integrated plastic surgery. Opinions regarding the utility of preference signaling were solicited, and the influence of preference signals on likelihood of interview offers was assessed., Setting: All integrated plastic surgery programs., Participants: All 88 program directors and 2022-2023 applicants to integrated plastic surgery., Results: A total of 45 programs and 99 applicants completed the survey (response rates, 54.2% and 34.2%, respectively). Overall, 79.6% of applicants and 68.9% of programs reported that preference signals were a useful addition to the application cycle. Programs reported that 41.4% of students who sent preference signals received interview offers, compared to 84.6% of home students, 64.8% of away rotators, and 7.1% of other applicants; overall, students who signaled were 5.8 times more likely to receive an interview offer compared to students who were not home students and did not rotate or signal. After multivariable adjustment, programs with higher Doximity rankings, numbers of away rotators, and numbers of integrated residents per year received more preference signals (all p < 0.05)., Conclusions: Applicants and programs report that preference signaling was a useful addition to the integrated plastic surgery application cycle. Sending preference signals resulted in a higher likelihood of interview offers among nonrotators. Background: The field of aesthetic medicine has expanded substantially in the past decade, with significant practitioner diversification and departure from core-specialty supervision. The increased autonomy of nonphysician practitioners in a rapidly evolving field has raised accentuated the importance of scientific literacy and practice-based learning standards in the delivery of aesthetic medical care., Objective: To assess the degree of scientific literacy among aesthetic medicine practitioners of different educational and training backgrounds in the United States and abroad., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 52 national and international aesthetic medicine practitioners employing a validated, 28-item, scientific literacy tool., Results: The average score for all participants was 76% (SD = 18%, range = 43%-100%). Physician practitioners scored higher in all competencies compared non-physicians (86% vs 68%, p < 0.001), with a greater discrepancy among US practitioners (95% vs 71%, p < 0.001). Competencies relating to identification of bias/confounding variables, graphical data representation, and statistical inference/correlation showed the lowest proficiency. Practitioners with a doctorate or equivalent degree were significantly more likely to report frequent engagement with medical literature than non-physicians ( p = 0.02)., Conclusion: There exists a significant disparity in scientific literacy between physician and nonphysician aesthetic medicine practitioners. Background: Impostor phenomenon occurs when high-achieving individuals have persistent self-doubt despite objective measures of competence and success, and has been associated with professional burnout and attenuated career advancement in medical specialties. This study aimed to define the incidence and severity of the impostor phenomenon in academic plastic surgery., Methods: A cross-sectional survey containing the Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale (range, 0 to 100; higher scores indicate greater severity of impostor phenomenon) was distributed to residents and faculty from 12 academic plastic surgery institutions across the United States. Generalized linear regression was used to assess demographic and academic predictors of impostor scores., Results: From a total of 136 resident and faculty respondents (response rate, 37.5%), the mean impostor score was 64 (SD 14), indicating frequent impostor phenomenon characteristics. On univariate analysis, mean impostor scores varied by gender (67.3 for women versus 62.0 for men; P = 0.03) and academic position (66.5 for residents versus 61.6 for attendings; P = 0.03), but did not vary by race or ethnicity; postgraduate year of training among residents; or academic rank, years in practice, or fellowship training among faculty (all P > 0.05). After multivariable adjustment, female gender was the only factor associated with higher impostor scores among plastic surgery residents and faculty (estimate 2.3; 95% CI, 0.03 to 4.6; P = 0.049)., Conclusions: The prevalence of the impostor phenomenon may be high among residents and faculty in academic plastic surgery. Impostor characteristics appear to be tied more to intrinsic characteristics, including gender, rather than years in residency or practice. Objective: To identify specific areas for improvement in cleft lip repair teaching., Design: Secondary analysis of prospectively-collected, blinded data., Setting: Three residency programs rotating at a single academic children's hospital., Participants: Plastic surgery residents, and craniofacial/pediatric plastic surgery fellows., Main Outcome Measures: Mean scores for each skill in an 18-item Unilateral Cleft Lip Repair competency assessment tool (UCLR) (1-3 scale for each item) were rank ordered. Correlation between level of training (PGY) and performance on steps of the procedure was examined using Pearson R., Results: Simulation participants (n = 26) scored highest on skills in the "Marking" subscale (2.38-2.63 mean score). Procedural steps that scored lowest were: closing the nasal floor (2.00), repairing oral mucosa (2.15) and avoiding over/under-dissection (2.19). Interestingly, none of these skills correlated with PGY, suggesting they do not improve with training., Conclusions: These results suggest that marking cleft lip repair is taught well in our current teaching environment, while steps like closing the nasal floor and repairing the oral mucosa are taught less well.
