Abstract

Torrefaction process is one of the solutions to produce solid fuel from a cocoa pod shell (CPS). Fuel characteristics of CPS changed after torrefaction. Effects of torrefaction temperature and holding time on physical, thermal, and chemical properties of CPS were investigated in this study. The experiments were conducted in a tubular torrefaction reactor. Three different torrefaction temperatures of 200, 250, and 300 °C and four holding times of 0, 30, 60, and 90 min were considered in this investigation. It was found that the color of CPS changed from light brown to black due to the increasing content of fixed carbon and depend on the torrefaction temperature and the holding time. The decrease in the grayscale value of the torrefied CPS represented an increase in HHV. Fixed carbon content and - higher heating value (HHV) of the torrefied CPS increased up to 17.5% and 41.3% compared to the raw CPS, while the volatile matter decreased up to 19.4%. The O/C and H/C atomic ratio decreased from 0.79 and 1.68 to 0.37 and 1.01, respectively, which corresponded to the increase of carbon content and decrease of oxygen and hydrogen contents. The properties of severe torrefaction CPS resembled between lignite and peat. The grindability and hydrophobicity of CPS was improved. The CPS based biochar should be used as a substitute for solid fuel that has the same characteristic to reduce the unfavorable effects of its potassium content. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Indonesia is the biggest producer country of crude palm oil in the world so that the utilization of palm oil industry waste as a solid fuel via dry torrefaction is a very promising method to produce not only green energy sources but also resolve the waste problems. This study aims to investigate the effect of temperature and holding time on the torrefaction of palm oil residue waste. The feedstocks used in these experiments were palm kernel and palm kernel shell. The feedstocks collected contained high moisture fraction which was then sun-dried for three days in order to reduce the water content. The results show that the temperature of 250°C produced a highest solid product which is more than 80% yield for palm kernel shell. The increase of torrefaction temperature and holding time resulted in decreasing the solid yield for both feedstocks. The palm kernel torrefaction produced less solid fraction than those of palm kernel shell at 250°C. In contrast condition at the higher temperature, palm kernel torrefaction produced less solid fraction than palm kernel shell. The heating value of solid product increased as the increase of temperature and holding time, while the energy yield decreased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

8. Peningkatan Kualitas Pembakaran Biomassa Limbah Tongkol Jagung sebagai Bahan Bakar Alternatif dengan Proses Karbonisasi dan Pembriketan

Abstract

Tongkol jagung merupakan limbah pertanian yang banyak dijumpai di Indonesia yang dapat diolah menjadi salah satu bahan bakar padat alternatif. Karbonisasi (pirolisis) yang diikuti dengan pembriketan merupakan salah satu cara yang dapat digunakan untuk mengolah biomasa menjadi bahan bakar padat. Penelitian ini mempelajari pengaruh suhu selama proses karbonisasi dan tekanan pada saat pembriketan terhadap sifat pembakaran briket dari tongkol jagung. Pada penelitian ini, proses karbonisasi dilakukan pada suhu 220ºC, 300ºC dan 380ºC sementara proses pembriketan dilakukan pada tekanan 24,4 MPa, 48,8 MPa, 73,2 MPa, dan 97,6 MPa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa proses karbonisasi yang dilakukan dapat meningkatkan kandungan karbon dan nilai kalor briket dari tongkol jagung. Kondisi operasi karbonisasi terbaik diperoleh pada suhu 380°C, sementara untuk pembriketan dilakukan pada 97,6 MPa yang dapat menaikkan kadar karbon sampai 67% dan nilai kalor sampai 65%. Proses karbonisasi yang dilakukan dapat mengurangi emisi CO dan laju pembakaran. Hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa penekanan yang tinggi selama pembriketan juga dapat mengurangi emisi CO dan laju pembakaran. Carbonization (pyrolysis) followed by briquetting is one of the methods that can be applied to process biomass into solid fuels. This work investigated the influence of carbonization temperature and briquetting pressure on combustion characteristic of corn cobs biomass. In this work, carbonization was carried out at three different temperatures, i.e. 220ºC, 300ºC and 380ºC, while briquetting process was prepared using four pressure variations, i.e. 24.4 MPa, 48.8 MPa , 73.2 MPa and 97.6 MPa. The results showed that carbonization process of corn cobs increased the fixed carbon content and the heating value. The best operating condition for carbonization and briquetting process were obtained at temperature of 380ºC and pressure of 97.6 Mpa that could increase the fixed carbon content and the heating value up to 67% and 65% respectively. Carbonization process could reduce CO emission and combustion rate. It was found that a high briquetting pressure resulted in low combustion rate and CO emission. Abstract

The article presents a study which describes the effect of pellet diameter and air flow rates on combustion temperature of the Jatropha curcas solid waste, such as cake seeds. The study uses densification process to form pellet and to mix the homogenous material of cake seeds, which is collected from local biodiesel factory. Result shows that pellet diameter has no significant influence on the temperature in the combustion chamber and an increase of the airflow rates decreases the reaction time.
