This study investigates the existence and stability of localized states in the discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger (DNLS) equation with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities, describing the so-called quantum droplets and bubbles. Those states exist within an interval known as the pinning region, as we vary a control parameter. Within the interval, multistable states are connected through multiple hysteresis, called homoclinic snaking. In particular, we explore its mechanism and consider two limiting cases of coupling strength: weak (anti-continuum) and strong (continuum) limits. We employ an asymptotic and a variational method for the weak and strong coupling limits, respectively, to capture the pinning region's width. The width exhibits an algebraic and an exponentially small dependence on the coupling constant for the weak and strong coupling, respectively. This finding is supported by both analytical and numerical results, which show excellent agreement. We also consider the modulational instability of spatially uniform solutions. An rf superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) consists of a superconducting ring interrupted by a Josephson junction (JJ). When driven by an alternating magnetic field, the induced supercurrents around the ring are determined by the JJ through the celebrated Josephson relations. This system exhibits rich nonlinear behavior, including chaotic effects. We study the dynamics of a pair of parametrically-driven coupled SQUIDs arranged in series. We take advantage of the weak damping that characterizes these systems to perform a multiple-scales analysis and obtain amplitude equations, describing the slow dynamics of the system. This picture allows us to expose the existence of homoclinic orbits in the dynamics of the integrable part of the slow equations of motion. Using high-dimensional Melnikov theory, we are able to obtain explicit parameter values for which these orbits persist in the full system, consisting of both Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian perturbations, to form so-called Silnikov orbits, indicating a loss of integrability and the existence of chaos., Comment: 4 pages. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1007.3939 by other authors

We consider a lattice equation modelling one-dimensional metamaterials formed by a discrete array of nonlinear resonators. We focus on periodic travelling waves due to the presence of a periodic force. The existence and uniqueness results of periodic travelling waves of the system are presented. In this work, we study a model of a one-dimensional magnetic metamaterial formed by a discrete array of nonlinear resonators. We focus on periodic and localized traveling waves of the model, in the presence of loss and an external drive. Employing a Melnikov analysis we study the existence and persistence of such traveling waves, and study their linear stability. We show that, under certain conditions, the presence of dissipation and/or driving may stabilize or destabilize the solutions. In this paper, we consider the classic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou system as a model of interacting particles connected by harmonic springs with a quadratic nonlinear term (first system) and a set of second-order ordinary differential equations with variability (second system) that resembles Hamilton's equations of motion of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou system. In the absence of variability, the second system becomes Hamilton's equations of motion of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou system (first system). Variability is introduced to Hamilton's equations of motion of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou system to take into account inherent variations (for example, due to manufacturing processes), giving rise to heterogeneity in its parameters. We demonstrate that a percentage of variability smaller than a threshold can break the well-known energy recurrence phenomenon and induce localization in the energy normal-mode space. However, percentage of variability larger than the threshold may make the trajectories of the second system blow up in finite time. Using a multiple-scale expansion, we derive analytically a two normal-mode approximation that explains the mechanism for energy localization and blow up in the second system. We also investigate the chaotic behavior of the two systems as the percentage of variability is increased, utilising the maximum Lyapunov exponent and Smaller Alignment Index. Our analysis shows that when there is almost energy localization in the second system, it is more probable to observe chaos, as the number of particles increases.

We consider the problem of reflectionless propagation of PT-symmetric solitons described by the nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger equation on a line in the framework of the concept of transparent boundary conditions for evolution equations. Transparent boundary conditions for the nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger equation are derived. The absence of backscattering at the artificial boundaries is confirmed by the numerical implementation of the transparent boundary conditions.

We consider the discrete Allen-Cahn equation with cubic and quintic nonlinearity on the Lieb lattice. We study localized nonlinear solutions of the system that have linear multistability and hysteresis in their bifurcation diagram. In this work, we investigate the system's homoclinic snaking, i.e. snaking-like structure of the bifurcation diagram, particularly the effect of the lattice type. Numerical continuation using a pseudoarclength method is used to obtain localized solutions along the bifurcation diagram. We then develop an active-cell approximation to classify the type of solution at the turning points, which gives good agreement with the numerical results when the sites are weakly coupled. We consider PT-symmetric, nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation on metric graphs. Vertex boundary conditions are derived from the conservation laws. Soliton solutions are obtained for simplest graph topologies, such as star and tree graphs. Integrability of the problem is shown by proving existence of infinite number of conservation laws.

We study continuations of topological edge states in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with on-site cubic (Kerr) nonlinearity, which is a 1D nonlinear photonic topological insulator (TI). Based on the topology of the underlying spatial dynamical system, we establish the existence of nonlinear edge states (edge solitons) for all positive energies in the topological band gap. We discover that these edge solitons are stable at any energy when the ratio between the weak and strong couplings is below a critical value. Above the critical coupling ratio, there are energy intervals where the edge solitons experience an oscillatory instability. This is a pedagogical paper on estimating the number of people that can be infected by one infectious person during an epidemic outbreak, known as the reproduction number. Knowing the number is crucial for developing policy responses. There are generally two types of such a number, i.e., basic and effective (or instantaneous). While basic reproduction number is the average expected number of cases directly generated by one case in a population where all individuals are susceptible, effective reproduction number is the number of cases generated in the current state of a population. In this paper, we exploit the deterministic susceptible-infected-removed (SIR) model to estimate them through three different numerical approximations. We apply the methods to the pandemic COVID-19 in Italy to provide insights into the spread of the disease in the country. We see that the effect of the national lockdown in slowing down the disease exponential growth appeared about two weeks after the implementation date. We also discuss available improvements to the simple (and naive) methods that have been made by researchers in the field. We propose a new method to estimate the time-varying effective (or instantaneous) reproduction number of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The method is based on a discrete-time stochastic augmented compartmental model that describes the virus transmission. A two-stage estimation method, which combines the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to estimate the reported state variables (active and removed cases) and a low pass filter based on a rational transfer function to remove short term fluctuations of the reported cases, is used with case uncertainties that are assumed to follow a Gaussian distribution. Our method does not require information regarding serial intervals, which makes the estimation procedure simpler without reducing the quality of the estimate. We show that the proposed method is comparable to common approaches, e.g., age-structured and new cases based sequential Bayesian models. A general model for the dynamics of arrays of coupled, spin-polarised lasers is derived, which is shown to reduce to both the spin flip model in a single cavity and the coupled mode model for a pair of guides in the appropriate limit. The general model is able to deal with waveguides of any geometry with any number of supported normal modes. A unique feature of the model is that it allows for independent polarisation of the pumping in each laser. The particular geometry is shown to be introduced via `overlap factors', which are a generalisation of the optical confinement factor. These factors play an important role in determining the laser dynamics. The model is specialised to the case of a general double-guided structure, which is then analysed and simulated numerically. For this case it is found that increasing the ellipticity of the pumping tends to enhance the regions where stable solutions are predicted in the plane of pumping strength versus guide separation., Comment: 55 pages, 14 figures

We consider a damped, parametrically driven discrete nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation, that models coupled pendula and micromechanical arrays, among others. To study the equation, one usually uses a small-amplitude wave ansatz, that reduces the equation into a discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with damping and parametric drive. Here, we justify the approximation by looking for the error bound with the method of energy estimates. Furthermore, we prove the local and global existence of {solutions to the discrete nonlinear} Schr\"odinger equation. To illustrate the main results, we consider numerical simulations showing the dynamics of errors made by the discrete nonlinear equation. We present a study of time-independent solutions of the two-dimensional discrete Allen-Cahn equation with cubic and quintic nonlinearity. Three different types of lattices are considered, i.e., square, honeycomb, and triangular lattices. The equation admits uniform and localised states. We can obtain localised solutions by combining two different states of uniform solutions, which can develop a snaking structure in the bifurcation diagrams. We find that the complexity and width of the snaking diagrams depend on the number of "patch interfaces" admitted by the lattice systems. We introduce an active-cell approximation to analyse the saddle-node bifurcation and stabilities of the corresponding solutions along the snaking curves. Numerical simulations show that the active-cell approximation gives good agreement for all of the lattice types when the coupling is weak. We consider branched Josephson junction created by planar superconductors connected to each other through the Y-junction insulator. Assuming that the structure interacts with the external constant magnetic field, we study static sine-Gordon solitons in such system by modeling them in terms of the stationary sine-Gordon equation on metric graph. Exact analytical solutions of the problem are obtained and their stability is analyzed.

We consider the interactions of traveling localized wave solutions with a vertex in a star graph domain that describes multiple Josephson junctions with a common/branch point (i.e., tricrystal junctions). The system is modeled by the sine-Gordon equation. The vertex is represented by boundary conditions that are determined by the continuity of the magnetic field and vanishing total fluxes. When one considers small-amplitude breather solutions, the system can be reduced into the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation posed on a star graph. Using the equation, we show that a high-velocity incoming soliton is split into a transmitted component and a reflected one. The transmission is shown to be in good agreement with the transmission rate of plane waves in the linear Schr\"odinger equation on the same graph (i.e., a quantum graph). In the context of the sine-Gordon equation, small-amplitude breathers show similar qualitative behaviors, while large-amplitude ones produce complex dynamics., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We study static nonlinear waves in networks described by a nonlinear Schrodinger equation with point-like nonlinearities on metric graphs. Explicit solutions fulfilling vertex boundary conditions are obtained. Spontaneous symmetry breaking caused by bifurcations is found.

In this work, we consider a semi-infinite discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with saturable nonlinearity driven at one edge by a driving force. The equation models the dynamics of coupled photorefractive waveguide arrays. It has been reported that when the frequency of the driving force is in the forbidden band, energy can be transmitted along the lattices provided that the driving amplitude is above a critical value. This nonlinear tunneling is called supratransmission. Here, we explain the source of supratransmission using geometric illustrations. We study quantum particle dynamics in a box and driven by PT-symmetric, delta-kicking complex potential. Such dynamical characteristics as the average kinetic energy as function of time and quasi-energy at different values of the kicking parameters. Breaking of the PT-symmetry at certain values of the non-Hermitian kicking parameter is shown. Experimental realization of the model is also discussed.

We consider an array of dual-core waveguides, which represent an optical realization of a chain of dimers, with an active (gain-loss) coupling between the cores, opposite signs of discrete diffraction in the parallel arrays, and a phase-velocity mismatch between them (which is necessary for the stability of the system). The array provides an optical emulation of the charge-parity ($\mathcal{CP}$) symmetry. The addition of the intracore cubic nonlinearity gives rise to several species of fundamental discrete solitons, which exist in continuous families, although the system is non-Hermitian. The existence and stability of the soliton families are explored by means of analytical and numerical methods. An asymptotic analysis is presented for the case of weak intersite coupling (i.e., near the anticontinuum limit), as well as weak coupling between cores in each dimer. Several families of fundamental discrete solitons are found in the semi-infinite gap of the system's spectrum, that have no counterparts in the continuum limit, as well as a branch which belongs to the finite band gap and carries over into a family of stable gap solitons in that limit. One branch develops an oscillatory instability above a critical strength of the intersite coupling, others being stable in their entire existence regions. Unlike solitons in conservative lattices, which are controlled solely by the strength of the intersite coupling, here fundamental-soliton families have several control parameters, one of which, viz., the coefficient of the intercore coupling in the active host medium, may be readily adjusted in the experiment by varying the gain applied to the medium., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

We consider linearly coupled discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations with gain and loss terms and with a cubic-quintic nonlinearity. The system models a parity-time ($\cal{PT}$)-symmetric coupler composed by a chain of dimers. Particularly we study site-centered and bond-centered spatially-localized solutions and present that each solution has a symmetric and antisymmetric configuration between the arms. When a parameter is varied, the resulting bifurcation diagrams for the existence of standing localized solutions have a snaking behaviour. The critical gain/loss coefficient above which the $\cal{PT}-$symmetry is broken corresponds to the condition when bifurcation diagrams of symmetric and antisymmetric states merge. Past the symmetry breaking, the system no longer has time-independent states. Nevertheless, equilibrium solutions can be analytically continued by defining a dual equation that leads to so-called ghost states associated with growth or decay, that are also identified and examined here. We show that ghost localized states also exhibit snaking bifurcation diagrams. In this work we investigate a one-dimensional parity-time (PT)-symmetric magnetic metamaterial consisting of split-ring dimers having gain or loss. Employing a Melnikov analysis we study the existence of localized travelling waves, i.e. homoclinic or heteroclinic solutions. We find conditions under which the homoclinic or heteroclinic orbits persist. Our analytical results are found to be in good agreement with direct numerical computations. For the particular nonlinearity admitting travelling kinks, numerically we observe homoclinic snaking in the bifurcation diagram. In this paper, we revisit the chaotic number of iterations needed by Newton's method to converge to a root. Here, we consider a simple modified Newton method depending on a parameter. It is demonstrated using polynomiography that even in the simple algorithm the presence and the position of the convergent regions, i.e. regions where the method converges nicely to a root, can be complicatedly a function of the parameter., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

An array of a finite number waveguides, driven laterally by injecting light at the outer waveguides, is considered. The array is modeled by a discrete nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation. It has been shown [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 243902 (2005)] that, when the injected light is in the proximity of a bifurcation point, such a system can be sensitive to small disturbances, making it possible to act as a light detector. We consider the stationary sine-Gordon equation on metric graphs with simple topologies. The vertex boundary conditions are provided by flux conservation and matching of derivatives at the star graph vertex. Exact analytical solutions are obtained. It is shown that the method can be extended for tree and other simple graph topologies. Applications of the obtained results to branched planar Josephson junctions and Josephson junctions with tricrystal boundaries are discussed.

The spin-flip model describing optically pumped spin-polarized vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers is considered. The steady-state solutions of the model for elliptically-polarised fields are studied. Asymptotic analysis for the existence and stability of the steady-state solutions is developed, particularly in the presence of pump polarisation ellipticity. The expansion is with respect to small parameters representing the ellipticity and the difference between the total pump power and the lasing threshold. The analytical results are then confirmed numerically, where it is obtained that generally one of the steady-state solutions is stable while the other is not. We investigate the flow of a one-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger model with periodic boundary conditions past an obstacle, motivated by recent experiments with Bose--Einstein condensates in ring traps. Above certain rotation velocities, localized solutions with a nontrivial phase profile appear. In striking difference from the infinite domain, in this case there are many critical velocities. At each critical velocity, the steady flow solutions disappear in a saddle-center bifurcation. These interconnected branches of the bifurcation diagram lead to additions of circulation quanta to the phase of the associated solution. This, in turn, relates to the manifestation of persistent current in numerous recent experimental and theoretical works, the connections to which we touch upon. A Parity-Time (PT)-symmetric system with periodically varying-in-time gain and loss modeled by two coupled Schrodinger equations (dimer) is studied. It is shown that the problem can be reduced to a perturbed pendulum-like equation. This is done by finding two constants of motion. Firstly, a generalized problem using Melnikov type analysis and topological degree arguments is studied for showing the existence of periodic (libration), shift periodic (rotation), and chaotic solutions. Then these general results are applied to the PT-symmetric dimer. It is interestingly shown that if a sufficient condition is satisfied, then rotation modes, which do not exist in the dimer with constant gain-loss, will persist. An approximate threshold for PT-broken phase corresponding to the disappearance of bounded solutions is also presented. We study collisions of moving nonlinear-Schr\"{o}dinger solitons with a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric dipole embedded into the one-dimensional self-focusing or defocusing medium. Accurate analytical results are produced for bright solitons, and, in a more qualitative form, for dark ones. In the former case, an essential aspect of the approximation is that it must take into regard the intrinsic chirp of the soliton, thus going beyond the framework of the simplest quasi-particle description of the soliton's dynamics. Critical velocities separating reflection and transmission of the incident bright solitons are found by means of numerical simulations, and in the approximate semi-analytical form. The coupled discrete linear and Kerr nonlinear Schrodinger equations with gain and loss describing transport on dimers with parity-time PT symmetric potentials are considered. The model is relevant among others to experiments in optical couplers and proposals on Bose-Einstein condensates in PT symmetric double-well potentials. It is known that the models are integrable. Here, the integrability is exploited further to construct the phase-portraits of the system. A pendulum equation with a linear potential and a constant force for the phase-difference between the fields is obtained, which explains the presence of unbounded solutions above a critical threshold parameter. The behaviour of all solutions of the system, including changes in the topological structure of the phase-plane, is then discussed., Comment: To appear in Physical Review A

Two effectively one-dimensional parallel coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of external potentials are studied. The system is modelled by linearly coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. In particular, the interactions of grey-soliton-like solutions representing analogues of superconducting Josephson fluxons as well as coupled dark solitons are discussed. A theoretical approximation based on variational formulations to calculate the oscillation frequency of the grey-soliton-like solution is derived and a qualitatively good agreement is obtained., Comment: 26 pages, 17 figures. We consider propagating, spatially localised waves in a class of equations that contain variational and non-variational terms. The dynamics of the waves is analysed through a collective coordinate approach. Motivated by the variational approximation, we show that there is a natural choice of projection onto collective variables for reducing the governing (nonlinear) partial differential equation (PDE) to coupled ordinary differential equations (ODEs). This projection produces ODEs whose solutions are exactly the stationary states of the effective Lagrangian that would be considered from applying the variational approximation method. We illustrate our approach by applying it to a modified Fisher equation for a travelling front, containing a non-constant-coefficient nonlinear term. We present numerical results that show that our proposed projection captures both the equilibria and the dynamics of the PDE much more closely than previously proposed projections., Comment: To appear in PRE (2013)

We study numerically a parametrically driven discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation modelling periodically curved waveguide arrays. We show that discrete surface solitons persist, but their threshold power is altered by the drive. There are critical drives at which the threshold values vanish. We also show that parametric drives can create resonance with a phonon making a new barrier for discrete solitons. By calculating the corresponding Floquet multipliers, we find that the stability of symmetric and antisymmetric off-side discrete surface solitons switches approximately at the critical drives for thresholdless solitons.

We investigate numerically parametrically driven coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations modelling the dynamics of coupled wavefields in a periodically oscillating double-well potential. The equations describe among other things two coupled periodically-curved optical waveguides with Kerr nonlinearity or horizontally shaken Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well magnetic trap. In particular, we study the persistence of equilibrium states of the undriven system due to the presence of the parametric drive. Using numerical continuations of periodic orbits and calculating the corresponding Floquet multipliers, we find that the drive can (de)stabilize a continuation of an equilibrium state indicated by the change of the (in)stability of the orbit. Hence, we show that parametric drives can provide a powerful control to nonlinear (optical or matter wave) field tunneling. Analytical approximations based on an averaging method are presented. Using perturbation theory the influence of the drive on the symmetry breaking bifurcation point is discussed.
