This paper includes a cradle-to-gate life cycle impact evaluation of gasoline blends in India. The potential environmental impacts of gasoline blends with three major components, i.e., methanol, ethanol, and n-butanol are assessed. The production of methanol from the natural gas reforming process, ethanol from hydrogenation with nitric acid, and n-butanol from the oxo process are considered in the current study. The results show that the gasoline blending with methanol has the lowest impact (11 categories) and is nearly constant from 5 to 15%. For gasoline with ethanol as an additive, the global warming potential, ozone depletion potential, and abiotic depletion potential rise with increasing ethanol addition. Meanwhile, increasing ethanol addition reduces the acidification potential and terrestric ecotoxicity potential impact of gasoline blends. Similarly, gasoline with n-butanol as an additive has higher acidification potential, eutrophication potential, human toxicity potential, terrestric ecotoxicity potential, marine aquatic ecotoxicity potential, and photochemical ozone creation potential compared to methanol and ethanol.

This study introduces a technique for decontaminating radioactive surfaces by employing a gel, herein termed as radiation decontamination gel with eutectic liquids (RADGEL), composed of a deep eutectic solvent and polyvinyl alcohol, with the goal of enabling reuse of the surface post‐decontamination. The decontamination effectiveness of RADGEL underwent thorough evaluation through trials conducted on different simulated surfaces, achieving decontamination efficiency up to 99.9% for alpha as well as gamma radionuclides. The various parameters influencing decontamination factors such as amount of complexing agent used, polymer film thickness, nature, and magnitude of radioactivity, as well as surface characteristics of substrates to be decontaminated were optimized. Additionally excellent mechanical strength of RADGEL, affirms its potential as practically efficient, cost‐effective, and safe option for surface decontamination. The Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis suggest RADGELs capability for both physical and chemical interactions with contaminants, thus highlighting its comprehensive decontamination efficacy. Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are considered a novel class of environmentally benign molecular solvents that are considered as potential solvents for nuclear fuel reprocessing, material recycling, and many other technological applications in both research and industry. However, there is a complete dearth of understanding pertaining to the behavior of metal ions in DES. Herein, we have investigated the speciation, complexation behavior, photochemistry, and redox properties and tried to obtain insight into the chemical aspects of the europium ion in DES (synthesized from heptyltriphenylphosphonium bromide and decanoic acid). The same has been probed using time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL), cyclic voltammetry (CV), synchrotron-based extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. TRPL indicated the stabilization of europium in the +3 oxidation state, favoring the potential of the Eu(III)–DES complex to emit red light under near UV excitation and the existence of inefficient energy transfer between DES and Eu3+. EXAFS analysis revealed the presence of Eu–O and Eu–Br, which represent the local surroundings of Eu3+ in the Eu(III)–DES complex. TRPL measurement has also suggested two distinct local environments of europium ions in the complex. DFT calculations supported the EXAFS findings, confirming that the Eu(III)–DES structure involves not only the oxygen atom of decanoic acid but also the oxygen atoms from the nitrate ions, contributing to the local coordination of Eu(III). Electrochemical studies demonstrated that the redox reaction of Eu(III)/Eu(II) in DES displays quasi-reversible behavior. The reaction rate was observed to increase with higher temperatures. The findings of this study can contribute to the understanding of the fundamental properties and potential applications of this luminescent and electrochemically active complex and pave the way for further studies and the development of novel materials with enhanced luminescent and electrochemical properties. Spinal cord tumors, though uncommon, pose significant challenges due to their potential for neurological disability and mortality. Intramedullary spinal cord tumors, particularly Long-level intramedullary spinal cord tumors, present challenging clinical scenarios. Contrast-enhanced Magnetic resonance imaging remains pivotal for radiological evaluation and surgical planning. Notably, aggressive resection is advocated to enhance prognosis, with meticulous attention to preserving neurological function. Advancements in spinal surgery techniques, coupled with intraoperative monitoring, offer promising avenues for improved patient outcomes. We presented three cases of long-level intramedullary tumors, emphasizing the significance of tailored management and presented details, including clinical presentations, radiological findings, and histopathological results.

Background Kite string injuries (manja cut injuries), particularly those caused by Chinese manja, are new culprit of emergencies especially in the month of January in Maharashtra region. These injuries commonly affect the neck, face, hands, and legs, especially among individuals traveling on two wheelers. The visibility challenge, where the kite's thread is difficult to see, further exacerbates the risk.

Anderson localization, a fundamental wave phenomenon, is a challenging problem in quasiparticle transport, exacerbated in the presence of dissipation. Of late, however, a few demonstrations of Anderson localization in non-Hermitian structures have been made. In the domain of electromagnetics of structured materials, spoof surface plasmon polaritons are a very interesting concept where structured metallic surfaces sustain bound states even at very low frequencies. The metallic non-Hermiticity, in an environment of possible disorder, makes this system an interesting case-study for mesoscopic transport, although the idea of disordered structures for spoof plasmons is not commonly encountered in literature. Here, we present experimental evidence of Anderson localization in hybrid polariton–photon states within a disordered, non-Hermitian environment. Disorder is introduced by perturbing the periodic microstructure while maintaining surface confinement. Localization enhances the plasmonic intensity by about a factor of three as compared to the conventional periodic structure. We experimentally characterize the intensity distribution, dispersion properties, and generalized conductance within the Anderson localized regime. A significant decrease in both localization length and its fluctuations is observed with increasing disorder strength. The inverse participation ratio shows the anticipated linear dependency on localization length. Our results offer experimental proof of Anderson localization in hybrid polariton–photon states, showcasing the influence of disorder in boosting plasmonic intensity. This elucidates potential applications in fields requiring controlled wave transport in disordered settings.

Background: Cervical cancer continues to be listed among the top gynecologic cancers worldwide. According to current data, it is ranked fourteenth among all cancers and fourth-ranked cancer among women worldwide. In India alone 1,30,000 new cases occur with the death toll of 70,000 per year. A “PAP’ test should be performed during the second half of the menstrual cycle (Day 14). The patient is placed in lithotomy position and the cervix is visualized by means of a speculum. The smaller end of the Ayre’s spatula is introduced through the external os and the squamocolumnar junction is scraped by rotating the spatula to 360°. Aims and Objectives: The objective of the study is to evaluate the use of the Pap smear screening method for detection of precancerous lesions. Cervical cancer accounts for 15% of all cancers in females. If treated or detected earlier, cervical cancer can be prevented. Materials and Methods: This study was done on 1000 patients during reproductive and later age groups (postmenopausal), attending Obstetric and Gynaecological Outpatient Department of Panna Dhai Hospital associated with RNTMC, Udaipur during the period of November 2012–April 2014 with history of white discharge per vagina, bleeding per vagina, pain in lower abdomen and post coital bleeding. Results: Most of the smears (90.1%) were NILM and 9.9% of smears showed cytological abnormality. Majority 834 (83.4%) of smears were inflammatory, Bacterial vaginosis was seen in 119 cases (11.9%), Candidiasis in 78 cases (7.8%), Trichomoniasis in 35 cases (3.5%), Atrophic vaginitis in 4 cases (0.4%) and Radiation changes in 4 cases (0.4%). There were 99 samples reported as having epithelial cell abnormality. Out of which 75 were LSIL, 14 were high grade squamous intraepithelial, 5 were atypical squamous cells (ASC)-US, 1 was ASC-H and 4 were squamous cell carcinoma. Conclusion: Due to high sensitivity, specificity and accuracy found in this study Pap test is proved to be highly useful to detect precancerous and cancerous lesions of cervix. From the above facts, it can be concluded that early diagnosis and prompt specific treatment of preinvasive or early stages of the disease (mainly in high risk women), reduces the prevalence of invasive carcinoma of uterine cervix.

High-dimensional entangled states have now been identified as excellent candidates towards the enhancement of the bandwidth of quantum systems. A variety of methods exist that aim to certify and set the bounds to entanglement. However, rapid and accurate approaches for precise quantification of the dimensions remain a challenge. Here, we report a facile, rapid and robust approach that quantifies a wide range of the spatial dimensions of high-dimensional entangled states using an interferometric technique using only two images. Our process works for a class of pure two-photon states, regardless of its separability and provides a fast and easy way to accurately measure the spatial Schmidt number which is a quantitative measure of dimensionality of entanglement. We apply our method to two-photon states generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) and show that our results are in excellent agreement with numerical estimates. Since such estimates only exist for collinear phase matching in SPDC crystals, we also derive a noncollinear phase-matching condition applicable for type-2 crystals. In these nonlinear crystals, the commonly applied assumption of degenerate daughter photons no longer holds, leading to deviations from earlier theoretical predictions. Our interferometric technique provides excellent results for both type-0 and type-2 collinear phase-matching conditions, endorsing its wide applicability in quantum photonics.

Background: Obesity is an important public health concern, one of the main lifestyle illnesses leading to chronic diseases like metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, depression, and stroke. Hence diagnosis and management of obesity as early as possible are essential to prevent the development of these diseases. The present paper reviews some of the key indicators useful in the assessment of obesity. Methods: We collected and reviewed different articles on obesity. Conclusion: Obesity is a serious non-communicable disease associated with multiple risk factors leading to multiple chronic diseases. Early identification for management is essential to reduce the risk factors of the disease. Proper diet and adequate physical activity should be followed regularly to combat the condition. For diet, eating on time, eating healthy fruits and vegetables, and avoiding junk and processed foods would be healthy and Physical activity of 30 min a day is recommended for all individuals to prevent obesity in the future.

Obesity is associated with increased gut permeability, and microbial products that are leaked from the gut may contribute towards obesity-associated inflammation. Here the authors show that the leakage of gut extracellular vesicles containing microbial DNA leads to bacterial DNA accumulation in pancreatic β-cells, promoting obesity-associated islet inflammation.

ProblemThe two waves of COVID-19 severely affected the healthcare system in India. The government responded to the first wave with a strict nationwide lockdown which disrupted primary care, including the management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The second wave overwhelmed healthcare facilities leading to inadequate access to hospital services. Collectively, these issues required urgent responses, including the adaptation of primary care.ApproachThe Low-Cost Effective Care Unit (LCECU) of Christian Medical College, Vellore (CMC) has a network of community volunteers, community health workers, an outreach nurse, social workers and doctors who operate clinics in six poorer areas of Vellore. The network adapted quickly, responding to the lockdown during the first wave and ensuring ongoing primary care for patients with non-communicable diseases. During the second wave, the team developed a system in collaboration with other CMC departments to provide home-based care for patients with COVID-19.Local settingThe LCECU is a 48-bed unit of the Department of Family Medicine, part of the 3,000-bed CMC. It originated in 1982, aiming to care for the poor populations of Vellore town. It has been actively working among urban communities since 2002, with a focus on delivering Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC), for six poor urban communities since 2016.Relevant changesDuring the first wave of COVID the LCECU team ensured patients with NCDs had uninterrupted primary care and medications by visiting them in their homes. The team also addressed food insecurity by organizing a daily lunch service for 600 people for over 2 months. In the second wave, the team responded to community needs by organizing and delivering home-based care to monitor patients affected by COVID-19.Lessons learnedThe COVID-19 pandemic raises many questions about the preparedness of health systems for disasters that disproportionately affect marginalized populations globally. COVID-19 is only one of the many potential disasters, including non-communicable diseases, mental health problems, pollution, climate change, and lifestyle illness. There is an urgent need to study models of care that support vulnerable communities in an accessible, cost-effective, and patient-oriented way, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This paper outlines lessons on how the LCECU team addressed disaster management:1. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of primary care-based rapid response interventions in disaster management.2. The LCECU model demonstrated the effectiveness of a primary care intervention based on pre-existing networks and familiarity between primary care teams and the community.3. Establishing community-based health care via interdisciplinary teams, including community health workers, community volunteers, outreach nurses, and doctors, is key.4. Addressing other social determinants of health, such as food insecurity, is an important component of care delivery.
