The article examines theoretical and legal issues related to the need to introduce the institution of the Commissioner for Environmental Rights in Ukraine. In order to clarify this issue, the legislation of Ukraine and international legal acts, the provisions of which relate to environmental human rights, are analyzed. In addition, the authors researched the foreign experience of various models of the implementation of the position of the environmental ombudsman – the USA, Great Britain, Austria and the Republic of the Philippines. Taking into account the increase in factors influencing the state of the environment, the issue of protecting violated human environmental rights is becoming increasingly important. It is especially important to ensure the protection of environmental rights in the period of martial law in connection with the mass of their violation by the aggressor state. The issue of the relationship between the environment and human rights is considered. The article proposes the introduction of the position of the Commissioner for Environmental Rights in Ukraine with the definition of his main tasks, in particular: the implementation of the state environmental policy and strategies for the sustainable development of regions in the field of environmental protection, the implementation of monitoring in order to detect violations of environmental human rights, the initiation of the investigation of committed violations in the absence of a statement from other individuals or legal entities about offenses, taking measures to prevent violations of environmental human rights, conducting educational and educational events for individuals and legal entities. Additionally, the grounds for the presence of regional representatives of the Environmental Ombudsman have been established. Attention is drawn to achieving the goal of sustainable and green economic development, taking into account climate goals, as well as protection of legal foundations, including environmental and social components. This article describes an innovative Future Work 4S project and provides comprehensive feedback on a free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) focused on environmental skills. Feedback was collected from two main target groups: educators (including university professors, teachers, and trainers) and student adult learners from Bulgaria, Greece, the Czech Republic, and Italy. The purpose of this survey is to provide an in-depth analysis of the feedback received on the Green Skills course and to highlight the main strengths identified by both educators and students. The findings reveal a high appreciation for the course's interactive and experiential learning approach by both the students and the educators. Specifically, 93% of participants agreed that the course was interesting, engaging, relevant, accessible, and developmental. The course's interactive exercises and gamification elements were particularly praised, enhancing learning and motivation. Our generation lives in an age of polycrisis. Polycrisis is a phenomenon where various single crises interact in ways that lead to an overall negative impact that is more significant than the sum of each issue. The age of polycrisis poses a considerable threat to humanity. Since the age of polycrisis results from human actions, humans are responsible for addressing it. As such, an ultimate roadmap and in-depth sustainability transformations are needed across all sectors. This raises a quest for a unified social contract that can engage everybody to promote the well-being of people and the planet locally, regionally, and globally. Our paper explores a holistic picture of a social transformation process to address the challenges of the age of polycrisis. We put together a new social contract, different actors (civic society, private sector, public sector, decision-makers), and specific focus areas of actors to implement the goals of Agenda 2030. Each societal sector has a unique role to play in this transformation. The private sector can drive innovation and investment, the public sector can provide governance and regulation, civic society can advocate for change and hold other sectors accountable, and decision-makers can provide leadership and coordination. A new social contract called "Society's Commitment to Sustainable Development" can foster societal transformation towards sustainability with the involvement of these different societal sectors. The widespread commitment of public and private sectors as well as civil society can be an effective driver when implementing Agenda 2030 goals to build a more sustainable future. We, the current generation, have power to make a difference regarding international collaboration, national decision-making, industries, households -- even down to the choices we make in our everyday lives. Exploring the trends of sustainability science research is vital for advancing our understanding of creating a more sustainable and resilient future for our planet and society. This overview article explores a segment of the sustainability science research landscape from 2006 to 2023 by examining articles published in the Sustainability Science journal. The initial step involved categorizing articles into four distinct periods, each representing a phase in the journal and field's evolution. The changing research topics and their interconnectedness were investigated by involving natural language processing, non-negative matrix factorization topic modeling, and Jaccard similarity analysis in Python. The study reveals shifting emphases over these periods: 2006–2010 focused on human–environment links; 2011–2015 shifted to practical solutions, such as climate adaptation; 2016–2020 focused on the integration of transdisciplinary knowledge, SDGs, and sustainability transitions; and 2021–2023 centered on transformative changes in sustainability. Based on the Sustainability Science journal publications, the field has evolved from foundational principles to current priorities such as transdisciplinary approaches, deep sustainability transformations, bioeconomy, and intergenerational narratives. The evolving landscape responds to environmental, societal, cultural, and technological changes. While the Sustainability Science journal has played an essential role, there remains potential to further concentrate on emerging topics and transformative methodologies. The area enclosed within the old wall is approximately 5.4 square kilometres and contains nearly 15,700 buildings. The city's old core contains significant heritage buildings that belong to the Abbasid Empire (762–1258) and the Ottoman Period (1638–1917). This paper assesses Baghdad's historical centre and urban heritage. It addresses how the urban fabric has faced irreparable damage, a weak definition of demands, and an ambiguous formulation of what to preserve. The research examines Old Rusafa's dense irregular fabric, significant old souqs, heritage mosques, historical buildings, and traditional Baghdadi courtyard houses. The research implements various research strategies at different levels to evaluate the current condition of the built heritage in the city centre. It adopts a mixed methodological research approach that brings information from both qualitative and quantitative methods to address the research problems. The paper argues that achieving sustainable urban heritage requires considering efficient and sustainable strategies that drive urban evolution and encourage historic centre revitalisation towards sustainable heritage conservation. Industrial applications of hydrogen are key to the transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon economy. Hydrogen has the potential to decarbonize industrial sectors that currently rely heavily on fossil fuels. Hydrogen, with its unique and versatile properties, has several in-industrial applications that are fundamental for sustainability and energy efficiency, such as the following: (i) chemical industry; (ii) metallurgical sector; (iii) transport; (iv) energy sector; and (v) agrifood sector. The development of a bibliometric analysis of industrial hydrogen applications in Europe is crucial to understand and guide developments in this emerging field. Such an analysis can identify research trends, collaborations between institutions and countries, and the areas of greatest impact and growth. By examining the scientific literature and comparing it with final hydrogen consumption in different regions of Europe, the main actors and technologies that are driving innovation in industrial hydrogen use on the continent can be identified. The results obtained allow for an assessment of the knowledge gaps and technological challenges that need to be addressed to accelerate the uptake of hydrogen in various industrial sectors. Pharmaceutical waste management represents a global issue. There is a significant gap in consumers' education regarding the proper disposal of pharmaceutical waste. A significant amount of pharmaceutical waste is generated in health care facilities, including expired medicines, unused doses, and contaminated materials. Inadequate disposal of pharmaceutical waste can have effects on human health and on the environment. Managing pharmaceutical waste requires coordinated efforts from policymakers, health care providers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, waste management companies, and consumers. The purpose of this paper is to examine the current state of activities that may impact the efficiency of Romanian pharmacists in collecting and disposing of pharmaceutical waste, as well as the intentions of pharmacists/technicians to recycle this type of waste. Furthermore, this paper aims to identify institutional and behavioral barriers that affect effective waste management. This research was conducted using quantitative and qualitative research methods. An exploratory factor analysis was used to identify the elements of satisfaction and their attribution levels in the pharmaceutical industry. The statistical significance of the differences across different occupations regarding satisfaction with pharmacists' activities to reduce waste at each stage was tested using an analysis of variance. Cross-tabulation and a Pearson's chi-square test were used to analyze the relationship between occupational segments and intention regarding recycling and reusing pharma waste. This research was augmented using qualitative analysis based on the Delphi technique, focused on the barriers to waste management in the pharmaceutical sector. This study presents a general perspective on the current situation of pharmaceutical waste in Romania. The results indicate that the selection of appropriate pharmaceutical waste practices is primarily determined by the attitude of individuals and organizations, followed by regulatory, economic, and technical criteria. In developing sustainable pharmaceutical waste policies, this research provides practical implications for governments, organizations, and citizens. A comprehensive approach to overcoming barriers in pharmaceutical waste management was developed by combining institutional strategies that focus on organizational policies and infrastructure with behavioral strategies that target individuals and communities. Big Brother Naija, Nigeria’s localization of the international Big Brother Franchise, is the most subscribed reality show among the Nigerian youth. This is due to its explicit eroticism and lucrative rewards. The show is controversial as the libertine population believes in it while spiritual devotees and culture moralists see the show as social corruption. This study therefore explores the social implications of open eroticism and profligacy on the impressionable youth as this concerns Nigeria’s future sustainability. The research is guided by qualitative research principles and Diana Leat’s conception of Social Change Theory emphasizing culture as pivotal in progressive societal changes. The researcher relied on native intuition for research assertions and digital platforms for accessing videos and commentaries on the reality show. The paper opines that Nigerian youth’s repudiation of due process is injurious to the country’s future. This paper delves into the role of life skills in shaping a sustainable future, informed by a systematic review of pertinent studies. It underscores the importance of integrating economic, environmental, and social factors into decisionmaking for enduring economic and environmental stability. Given that human actions profoundly impact all systems, including the economy, environment, and society, the focus on life skills becomes pivotal in achieving sustainability. Life skills bridge the gap between capabilities and essential functioning, enhancing individuals’ capacity to meet contemporary societal expectations and address social, economic, and environmental issues. This essay explains that periodic examination of the goals of education is essential for educational institutions to ensure they are adequately preparing students to address the challenges of the present and build a better future. It argues that education is an ethical enterprise, and that clear and shared goals provide education institutions with direction and coherence. Rapid societal changes challenge educational institutions to revisit whether their goals are supporting teaching students so they can develop the necessary knowledge, skills and dispositions to address them. The article discusses three accelerating existential challenges––challenges to human rights, democratic decline, and climate change––and argues that they require schools, universities, and systems to educate students to understand and be able and committed to address them. These three challenges also influence educational institutions, and the development of institutional strategies can help create synergies among functions and processes in schools and universities to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions that can help understand and mitigate climate change and declines in human rights and democracy. Our study presents a systematic literature review on the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic on the different types of sharing economy platforms and the sharing economy phenomenon in its entirety. Our literature review helps understand how the characteristics of different services of the sharing economy combine with contingent factors, such as government-mandated lockdowns, changed consumer behaviors, and people's fear of contagion, to determine the magnitude of the impact of COVID-19 on the sharing economy both in the short run and in the long run. By examining these factors, we distinguish between sharing economy services/platforms that were (and possibly will be) negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic (referred to as "symptomatic" platforms) and those that were not (and possibly will not be) impacted at all or even benefit (referred to as "asymptomatic" platforms). We then propose a new framework that combines traditional dimensions of sharing economy with a dimension resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, i.e., the level of physical interaction required to deliver the sharing economy service. Building upon the extant literature, the framework helps better understand how the sharing economy will evolve after the pandemic. Abstract The rapidly growing global need for environmentally friendly energy solutions has inspired extensive research and development efforts aimed at harnessing the potential of hydrogen energy. Hydrogen, with its diverse applications and relatively straightforward acquisition, is viewed as a promising energy carrier capable of tackling pressing issues, such as carbon emissions reduction and energy storage. This study conducts a preliminary investigation into effective hydrogen generation and storage systems, encompassing methods like water electrolysis, biomass reforming, and solar‐driven processes. Specifically, the study focuses on assessing the potential of nanostructured catalysts and innovative materials to enhance the productivity and versatility of hydrogen energy systems. Additionally, the utilization of novel materials not only improves hydrogen storage capacity and safety but also opens up possibilities for inventive applications, including on‐demand release and efficient transportation. Furthermore, critical factors such as catalyst design, material engineering, system integration, and technoeconomic viability are examined to identify challenges and chart paths for future advancements. The research emphasizes the importance of fostering interdisciplinary collaborations to advance hydrogen energy technologies and contribute to a sustainable energy future.

Child labor is a pressing social issue with significant implications for sustainability, particularly in Egypt. This study aims to identify the social and economic factors associated with the prevalence of child labor in Egyptian society. Using a descriptive analysis approach, we conducted interviews, administered questionnaires, and made observations among a representative sample of 478 working children from various areas in Cairo Governorate (Maadi, Helwan, and Al-Maasara) and Giza Governorate (Faisal, Al-Haram, and Dokki). Our findings reveal key factors contributing to child labor in Egypt. Firstly, the study highlights the substantial impact of low monthly income, rated as a high contributing factor (weighted relative weight of 89.21 %). Additionally, migration from rural to urban areas was found to have a moderate contribution (weighted relative weight of 76.33 %). Moreover, social traditions and customs within families encouraging child labor were rated as a moderate factor (weighted relative weight of 77.60 %). The study also identifies high school dropout rates (weighted relative weight of 87.94 %) and family disintegration (weighted relative weight of 88.29 %) as significant contributors to child labor. Lastly, through interviews with the working children, we identified several negative consequences of their early employment, including exposure to stress, fatigue, injuries, anemia, low morale due to verbal abuse and humiliation by employers, inclination towards smoking, violence, and loitering at night without purpose, deprivation of education and playtime, drug and alcohol addiction, and vulnerability to sexual harassment. These findings underscore the serious challenges that child labor poses to achieving sustainable development goals. Implementing comprehensive strategies is necessary to address this issue and ensure a sustainable future for Egypt.

This comprehensive review addresses the vital environmental concerns posed by conventional petroleum-based plastics, particularly in the context of the packaging industry's extensive reliance on these materials. As nearly 99% of plastics originate from non-renewable petrochemical sources and their non-biodegradable nature leads to widespread waste accumulation and harmful emissions upon disposal, the need for sustainable alternatives has become paramount. This paper explores the escalating environmental and health repercussions linked to traditional plastics, underscored by global initiatives, including restrictions on single-use plastics, aimed at mitigating these challenges. In response, the paper highlights the growing interest in environmental friendly biopolymers, which can be sourced from renewable biological materials or synthesized from biopolymers such as starch, casein etc. The classification of biopolymers into three primary categories; natural biopolymers, microbial fermentation-derived biopolymers, and polymerized monomers from biomass is comprehensively examined. Furthermore, the paper emphasizes the pivotal role of biopolymer properties, such as barrier characteristics, mechanical strength, heat resistance, biodegradability, flexibility, food contact safety, and cost-effectiveness, in determining their suitability for packaging applications. It also stresses the importance of conducting life cycle assessment (LCA) to holistically evaluate the environmental sustainability of biopolymers. This review highlights the potential of integrating biopolymers into packaging materials as a promising avenue to reduce the adverse environmental impact of traditional plastic production. These biodegradable materials, with their diverse properties and renewability, offer a sustainable approach to mitigating plastic waste and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. However, further research, development, and collaborative efforts are essential to optimize biopolymer performance, reduce production costs, and facilitate broader adoption. This study investigates the transition to a sustainable shipping industry within the framework of the IMO's 2050 carbon neutrality objective, focusing on sociotechnical systems analysis. This research delves into the sustainable paradigm shift towards alternative marine fuels, such as LNG, methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen, from a sociotechnical transition perspective, analyzing the multilevel perspective challenges and opportunities. Specifically, it scrutinizes the implications of adopting these alternative fuels for global shipping, identifying technical uncertainties, financial constraints, and infrastructure needs. Through a comprehensive review of the existing literature on ship emissions and alternative fuels, coupled with sociotechnical transition theory, this study addresses the multifaceted challenges and opportunities in meeting the IMO's environmental objectives. It emphasizes the necessity of collaborative governance, innovative niche strategies, and a holistic approach to leverage the current window of opportunity in facilitating the maritime industry's transition to sustainable fuel options. There is a growing scholarship that shows how myths, mysteries, common sayings and beliefs aid the advancement of a sustainable future for human and nonhuman species. This article takes one such example, the Yorùbá concepts of Ìgbàgbọ́ and Ìmọ̀, and explores their relevance for contemporary global discourses on sustainability that extend beyond the context of one local community. The article argues that the myths, mysteries, proverbs, common sayings and beliefs circulated about human and nonhuman species within Yorùbá communities (classified as Ìgbàgbọ́) reinforce the relevance of the global agenda for a sustainable future for all. The article shows that the encoded ideas in the Yorùbá myths, mysteries, proverbs and other narrative forms on human and nonhuman species complement the extant philosophical and ecological thoughts in global scholarship. This complementarity speaks to the importance of collaborative efforts for the mitigation of an undesirable future for human and nonhuman species and thus is of relevance for the agenda of a sustainable future grounded in a non-discriminatory global partnership. The age of polycrisis poses a considerable threat to humanity. Since the age of polycrisis results from human actions, humans are responsible for addressing it. As such, an ultimate roadmap and in-depth sustainability transformations are needed across all sectors. This raises a quest for a unified social contract that can engage everybody to promote the well-being of people and the planet locally, regionally, and globally. Our paper explores a holistic picture of a social transformation process to address the challenges of the age of polycrisis. We put together a new social contract, different actors (civic society, private sector, public sector, decision-makers), and specific focus areas of actors to implement the goals of Agenda 2030. Each societal sector has a unique role to play in this transformation. The private sector can drive innovation and investment, the public sector can provide governance and regulation, civic society can advocate for change and hold other sectors accountable, and decision-makers can provide leadership and coordination. A new social contract called “Society’s Commitment to Sustainable Development” can foster societal transformation towards sustainability with the involvement of these different societal sectors. The widespread commitment of public and private sectors as well as civil society can be an effective driver when implementing Agenda 2030 goals to build a more sustainable future. We, the current generation, have power to make a difference regarding international collaboration, national decision-making, industries, households – even down to the choices we make in our everyday lives. The future is shaped by the decisions we make today.

Industrialization in Newly industrialized countries may be a potential retarding factor for sustainable future. This study examines that transitions towards green alternatives may be driven by technological innovation, urbanization, and industrialization using panel-corrected standard errors regression and quantile regression on data from 1985 to 2020. The empirical results suggest that technological innovation accelerates renewable energy and decelerates non-renewable energy. Conversely, urbanization and trade liberalization reduce renewable energy but increase non-renewable energy while increase in output positively impacts both renewable and non-renewable energy. The findings imply prioritizing technological innovation, sustainable urban planning and development and aligning policies for a successful and sustainable energy transition.

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education has gained popularity as an interdisciplinary approach that combines these subjects into a single curriculum. STEM concepts align with the competencies the contemporary workforce requires, making it a desirable education model to foster twenty-first-century skills. The dynamism of the metacognitive awareness of science teachers in STEM has not been the subject of serious research. This study explores the metacognitive awareness level of science teachers in STEM, and the results are average. A gap exists between the living culture and the learning culture of students in this digital era. STEM is a new way of learning and comprehending in terms of a sustainable future. India is facing a significant energy crisis due to its rapidly growing population, which is not being met by an equivalent increase in energy supply. According to the US Energy Information Administration, India's electricity consumption is projected to grow by 3.3% annually until 2035. Biogas technology, which converts waste into clean energy, offers a promising solution to this problem and accounts for 9% of global energy consumption. Despite being introduced in 1981, biogas technology's potential in India remains largely untapped, with only 7.34 MWe of off-grid projects generated by 2020. However, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have significant potential for biogas generation. The National Biogas and Manure Management Program (NBMMP) have installed 5,056,139 biogas plants between 1981-82 and 2020-21, with Maharashtra being the top performer. India's agrarian economy provides ample raw materials for biogas generation, making it a crucial renewable resource for the country's energy crisis. Given the pressing need to address global warming, greenhouse effects, depleting fossil fuels, and pollution, biogas technology is essential for a cleaner, more sustainable future. Focusing on biogas technology can help India meet its increasing energy demands and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future. This study aims to analyze the journalism and digital media practice that resulted in the digital fetishism trend in Indonesian millennial journalists before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research adopts the qualitative approach by a case study with in-depth interviews with eight journalists from reputable print and online media and participatory observations which focus on eight journalists' social media accounts. This research finds that digital media has become a part that cannot be separated from millennial journalists. Dependence on digital media forms a digital fetishism. This research shows that millennial journalists remain disadvantaged and tend to be exploited. Journalists also have the status of digital labor. Digital fetishism has become an ideology and identity which shackles millennial journalists. This study suggests that many opportunities can still be developed by gaining a sustainable future by prioritizing innovation, professionalism, independence, and inclusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In spite of the efforts of the footwear and textile industries to understand their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and develop reduction strategies, knowledge on the subject is still incipient. Given this scenario, this paper aims to identify, quantify, and present the main sources of GHG in this economic sector, followed by proposing solutions aimed at more efficient management. A qualitative and quantitative study was conducted with four companies in southern Brazil to achieve this purpose. Among the main sources of emissions are fuel and energy consumption. The main reduction alternatives include searching for alternative fuels and considering energy generation through clean sources. It is clear that implementing initiatives aimed at reducing emissions is not a simple task. However, the research highlighted the technical feasibility of new forms of production with a reduced environmental impact.

Rabbit (RM) has become a valuable source of nutrients since the 1970s, helping to transform the European food industry into the largest RM producer in the world. However, the RM industry is experiencing a critical period of ethical imbalance. This trend, described as feed conversion ratio, impacts the environmental and financial performance of RM farms, which could lead to an increase production of industrial waste. In addition, the loss of corporate ethical responsibility and sustainable development by RM-oriented companies has further exacerbated the situation. Our objective was to summarize current trends in the RM industry and markets, highlighting possible strengths and weaknesses. This review shows current approaches in sustainable techniques in RM production processes, ethical issue, environmental and processing responsibility of RM producers, as well as social responsibilities and ethical practices of slaughterhouses and RM producers, sustainable environmental practices of slaughterhouses, technological aspects and safety of RM and social drivers in RM market. The analysis of reviewed literature revealed the potential strategies for sustainable RM production.

Industrial applications of hydrogen are key to the transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon economy. Hydrogen has the potential to decarbonize industrial sectors that currently rely heavily on fossil fuels. Hydrogen, with its unique and versatile properties, has several in-industrial applications that are fundamental for sustainability and energy efficiency, such as the following: (i) chemical industry; (ii) metallurgical sector; (iii) transport; (iv) energy sector; and (v) agrifood sector. The development of a bibliometric analysis of industrial hydrogen applications in Europe is crucial to understand and guide developments in this emerging field. Such an analysis can identify research trends, collaborations between institutions and countries, and the areas of greatest impact and growth. By examining the scientific literature and comparing it with final hydrogen consumption in different regions of Europe, the main actors and technologies that are driving innovation in industrial hydrogen use on the continent can be identified. The results obtained allow for an assessment of the knowledge gaps and technological challenges that need to be addressed to accelerate the uptake of hydrogen in various industrial sectors. This is essential to guide future investments and public policies towards strategic areas that maximize the economic and environmental impact of industrial hydrogen applications in Europe.
