El aceite de palma es rico en carotenos, tocoferoles y tocotrienoles. El proceso de refinación para consumo humano, produce algunas alteraciones de sus propiedades. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto de un aceite de palma parcialmente refinado, blanqueado y desodorizado (RBD rojo) sobre el perfil lipídico y niveles de vitamina A (retinol) y E (a tocoferol) en 3 grupos de ratas: B (alimento comercial para animales de laboratorio: ST + 5% de polvo de yema de huevo), C (ST + 5% de polvo de yema de huevo + 14 RBD rojo) ambos hiperlipidemia inducida y D (ST + 14% RBD rojo) frente a un control (A) durante 35 días. El RBD rojo indujo una disminución significativa de CT en los grupos C y D (81 ± 11 mg/dL y 77 ± 7 mg/dL, respectivamente) al compararlos con el grupo control (99 ± 11 mg/dL) para el día 35 de experimentación; así como un incremento del HDL-C en grupo C (53 ± 4 mg/dL) y D (53 ± 5 mg/dL) cuando se compararon con el grupo B (44 ± 3 mg/dL) el cual recibió sólo PH, resultando una menor relación CT/HDL (1,5 ± 0,1). Además en los grupos C y D aumentaron significativamente (p £ 0,05) las concentraciones séricas de retinol (26 ± 5 µg/dL y 58 ± 18 µg/dL) y a tocoferol (165 ± 58 µg/dL y 445 ± 65 µg/dL) respectivamente. Estos resultados permiten concluir que la suplementación con RBD rojo disminuye el CT mejorando la relación CT/HDL. La presencia de ácidos grasos monoinsaturados (oleico) y las altas concentraciones de a-tocoferol y retinol, en el aceite de palma RBD rojo utilizado, incidieron favorablemente sobre el perfil lipídico de las ratas con hiperlipidemia inducida Palm oil is rich in carotenoids, tocopherols and tocotrienols. This oil is refined for its human consumption bringing as a consequence an alteration of their properties. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the partially refined, bleached and deodorized palm oil (RBD red) on the lipid profile and levels of vitamin A (retinol) and E (a tocopherol) in 4 groups of rats: B (commercial food Protinal® for laboratory animals: ST + 5% egg yolk powder); C (ST + 5% egg yolk powder + 14 RBD red) both groups with induced hyperlipidemia; and D (ST + 14% RBD red), as compared with a control A (ST) during 35 days. The results were: the RBD red induced significative decreases of TC (total cholesterol) in groups C and D (81 ±11 mg/dL and 77 + 7 mg/dL), respectively, when compared with the control group (99 ± 11 mg/dL) for 35 days experimentation. Additionally, an increment of the HDL-C (53 ± 4 mg/dL) in the C group and in the D group (53 ± 5 mg/dL) were observed when compared with group B (44 ± 3 mg/dL), resulting in a lower ratio of TC/HDL-C (1.5 ± 0.1). In the groups C and D, there were significant increases (p < 0.05) in the serum concentrations of retinol (26 ± 5 µg/dL and 58 ± 18 µg/dL) and a tocopherol (165 ± 58 µg/dL) and 445 ± 65 µg/dL). These results allow to conclude that the supplementation with RBD red diminishes the TC, improving the ratio TC/HDL-C. The presence of a monosaturated fatty acid (oleic acid) and the high concentrations of micronutrients (á tocopherol and retinol) in RBD red palm oil, influence favorably the lipid profile of rats with induced hyperlipidemia

El propósito de este estudio fue evaluar si la administración de diltiazem (30mg/día/vía oral), disminuye la hipercolesterolemia e inhibe la aterosclerosis en 38 conejos machos hipercolesterolemicos. Control: Conejarina por doce semanas, A: dieta rica con 0,3% de colesterol(DH) por doce semanas. B: DH por doce semanas y desde la tercera semana hasta la dodécima diltiazem. Grupo C: DH por dos semanas y Conejarina + diltiazem desde la tercera semana hasta la duodécima y D: DH por dos semanas y Conejarina desde la tercera hasta la duodécima semana. Se determinaron Colesterol Total (CT), LDL-colesterol (LDLc) y Triglicéridos (Tg) por métodos enzimáticos. A la duodécima semana, se sacrificaron los conejos y el estudio histológico fue realizado por los siguientes métodos: 1. Hematoxilina Eosina evaluó la presencia de lesiones, 2. Gomori′s: evaluó la profundidad de las lesiones 3. Computarizado: midió la extensión de las lesiones. En el grupo A y B aumentaron significativamente el CT, LDLc y Tg en relación al control en todos los periodos, a excepción de los Tg a la duodécima semana. Respecto a las lesiones ateroscleróticas, los grupos A y B presentaron lesiones tipo II, III, IV y V, el porcentaje promedio de área lesionada fue: Grupo A: 47,20%, Grupo B: 57,60%. Estos resultados permiten concluir que el diltiazem ejerce un efecto hipolipidemiante cuando se administra junto con una dieta rica en 0,3% colesterol, se confirma que una dieta adecuada es una buena estrategia para prevenir las dislipidemías y que el diltiazem no previno, ni indujo regresión de las lesiones ateroscleróticas. Effects of diltiazem on seric lipids and atherosclerotics lesions in hypercholesterolemics rabbits. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the administration of dilltiazem (30mg/day/oral route) decreases hypercholesterolemia and inhibits atherosclerosis in 38 male hypercholesterolemic rabbits. Control rabbits were given a standard diet for twelve weeks; Experimental rabbits were given: Group A: 0.3% cholesterol-enriched diet (HD) for twelve weeks. Group B: HD for 12 weeks and diltiazem from week 3 until week 12. Group C: HD for two weeks and standard diet + diltiazem from week 3 until week 12. Group D: HD for two weeks and standard diet from week 3 until week 12. Biochemical assays of Total Cholesterol (TC), LDL-cholesterol (LDLc) and Triglycerides (Tg) were done by enzymatic methods. The rabbits were sacrificed at week 12 and a histological study was carried out using the following methods: 1. Hematoxylin-eosin for determined the presence of lesions. 2. Gomori´s: determined depth of lesions. 3. Computarized: determined extent of lesions. In groups A and B, TC, LDLc and Tg increased significantly in relation to control in all periods, with the exception of Tg at week 12. Regarding atherosclerotic lesions, groups A and B presented Type II, III, IV and V; average percentages of lesion extent were : Group A: 47.20% and Group B: 57.60%. These results suggest that diltiazem exerts a hypolipidic effect when administered in conjunction with a 0.3% cholesterol-enriched diet. It was confirmed that an adequate diet is a sound preventive strategy against dyslipidemia, and that diltiazem does not prevent or induces regression of atherosclerotic lesions.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the administration of Vitamin E (200mg/day) for 4 weeks could decrease hypercholesterolemia and inhibit atherosclerosis in male hypercholesterolemic New Zealand White rabbits. Plasmatic Total Cholesterol (TC) and LDL-Cholesterol (LDLc) were determined by enzymatic methods and Vitamin E was determined in plasma by HPLC at weeks 0, 4 and 8. A histopathological study was carried out at week 8 (w8), using a hematoxylin-eosin method. Forty rabbits were divided randomly into 5 groups and fed different diets. These diets included a Normal diet, a 1% Cholesterol rich diet, a Normal diet + Vitamin E and 1% Cholesterol rich diet + Vitamin E. The findings did not show a reduction of Total Cholesterol and LDLc in the groups of rabbits that received Vitamin E (III and IV) at weeks 4 and 8. At the end of the experiment, all the animals were deeply anesthetized with hydrochloride ketamina (60 mg/kg body wt) in order to carry out a histopathological study. Regarding the atherosclerotic lesions, Vitamin E did not induce inhibition of the atherosclerotic plaque development or any modification in the lesion type induced by the hypercholesterolemic diet. In conclusion, the results suggest that additional studies need to be carried out with higher doses and/or treatments for a longer period in order to clarify in detail whether Vitamin E really has a hypocholesterolemic effect and inhibits atherosclerosis. El propósito de este estudio fue determinar si la administración de Vitamina E (200mg/día) por 4 semanas podía disminuir la hipercolesterolemia e inhibir la aterosclerosis en conejos machos Nueva Zelandia. El Colesterol total plasmático (CT) y el LDL-colesterol (LDLc) fueron determinados por método enzimático y la Vitamina E en plasma por HPLC a la semana 0, 4 y 8. A la semana 8 (8s) un estudio histopatológico fue llevado a cabo usando el metodo de hematoxilina-eosina. Cuarenta conejos fueron divididos al azar en 5 grupos y alimentados con diferentes dietas. Estas dietas incluyen una dieta normal, dieta rica en 1% de Colesterol, una dieta normal + vitamina E y una dieta rica en 1% de Colesterol + vitamina E. Los hallazgos de este trabajo no muestran una reducción del CT y LDLc en los conejos que recibieron Vitamina E a las semanas 4 y 8. Al final del experimento, a fín de realizar el estudio histopatológico, todos los animales fueron profundamente anestesiados con hidrocloruro de ketamina (60 mg/Kg/peso corporal). Con respecto a las lesiones ateroscleróticas, la Vitamina E no indujo inhibición del desarrollo de la placa aterosclerótica ni modificaciones en los tipos de lesiones inducidas por la dieta hipercolesterolémica. En conclusión, los resultados sugieren que serían necesario realizar estudios adicionales con mayores dosis y/o tratamientos mas prolongados para clarificar en detalle si la Vitamina E realmente posee efecto hipocolesterolémico e inhibe la aterosclerosis.
